Please describe your existing audience
Small business owners, real estate owners, professionals (e.g. doctors, attorneys, engineers)
Who would you like to add to your audience?
Middle-to-High Income taxpayers
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
Instantly recognizable. For example, H&R Block (www.hrblock.com) has a simple green block to represent their firm. Genius idea and easily identifiable.
Clean and simple lines. Logo will be printed on paper on our black and white printer. The logo should be carvable or manufacturable as it will be mounted on the lobby wall.
Respected tax and accounting firm. Clients need to trust their intimate financial secrets to our firm so the logo should be of a serious and professional nature; it doesn't have to be boring though.
The following items would NOT be a good fit:
Cartoons, country-like, whimsical, funny, cute
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Forest Green to Grassy Green. Most of the time, the logo will be printed in Black & White for our letterhead.

Knowledgeable, Professional, Efficient
Where will your new logo be used?
Business cards, Letterhead, Lobby Raised Letter Signage, Building Signage
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
H&R Block - Love it. Instantly recognizable (1st favorite)
KPMG Peat Marwick - Professional. Clean lines. Nice use of boxes behind name. (2nd Favorite)
PricewaterhouseCoopers - Professional use of initials in name (3rd Favorite)
RSM McGladrey - The M in RSM breaks the eye movement. Logo is too long.
Jackson Hewitt - Luke warm. Nothing special
Liberty Tax - Clever incorporation of Statue of Liberty
Ernst & Young - Cluttered
Deloitte & Touche - Boring. No real logo
BDO Seidman - Clean lines. Conveys firm name well

What sets you apart from your competitors?
Tax expertise and experience in structuring business transactions, forming business entity entities, defense of audits, and reducing taxes for smaller business clients (generally revenue $100k to $5 million), real estate owners (apartments, commercial, 1031 exchanges), and professionals. Mid-Tier and International firms focus on Fortune 500.
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Best in Business

Like the concept of combing the L&T. Some may interpret the T as an upside down L. Maybe we could explore this concept more with different variations.
I checked your linked website and liked the following logos: Fresh Green, Tango, and 2 Moms Talk. All of them show give you a direct link into their product or service via a picture logo. Any ideas you can give for a really fun topic like taxes and finances. ;)

Hello!:)
Love Post #4. Simple and powerful. Would look good on letterhead. Any variations that might not look as heavy on a business card? Also, is there a way to emphasize Legend more than Tax?

Like the idea of the lighthouse. I take it that your concept is that our firm a beacon for lost ships to right the path. I like the message as this is what we do. Maybe we could find another way to give this feel as the lighthouse seems a bit too complicated. Plus, someone may think that the business has something to do with boats, water, navigation, or at least something other than taxes and finance. Keep the concepts coming!!

Hi! Thanks for the feedback! As requested, here's a refined version of concept 1.:)
The hollow box seems interesting. I might like the solid box more. Maybe we could try up/down or diagonal boxes. Is there a way to emphasize Legend rather than Tax?
Any other concepts would be appreciated. The entries so far are a good start, but I would like to see more ideas, if possible.

This is my favorite version from you so far. For the words portion, I especially like the Big Legend with the underline leading into Tax. That's a keeper!!
The colored moving boxes are pretty good. The black and white version of the graphic doesn't have the same oomf though. How about some gray tones? Can you also come up with a couple other variations of this theme with different moving squares? Maybe also try circles and/or triangles? Not sure if the new shapes would work but might be interesting.

How about taking out the letter "L" from the word Legend and just use the Logo as part of the word Legend?
Can you give some alternate versions of the "L?" This version has Roman columns which is nice. It might lead someone to think that it is a attorney's firm.

Creative logo using the hand and calculator. The idea is unique so keep them coming.
Our firm focuses on building tax structures and wealth for clients over time. Perhaps, a calculator might insinuate that we are focused only on the numbers and not on the persons financial well-being. I think that I am leaning away from the calculator idea for now.

Actually, I like this calculator by itself logo more than the hand and calculator. Some logo that communicates lower taxes and/or more wealth would be good.

This is much improved over the version 1 and 2. More artistic involvement. I am looking more for a logo rather than letters but this version does combine the art with letters. Maybe find a way to inject some sense of movement to give this version some pizazze. Needs something interesting too jazz up the design.

Like this version a lot. Nice optical illusion. Simple lines. If you look at the logo from the bottom left to the top right, you can see a rose. Same problem as version 1 where you might see a flower. I like this logo so maybe you could tweak to keep this feeling but less like a flower.

i like the use of white space to create an illusion. The new shapes are pretty cool. I prefer the versions 1 - 4 as they have a "movement." Version 5 might also be interpreted as a flower
Both font patterns are great. I still like the Big Legend with the little Tax the most. The word portion are definitely keepers. How about a version with circles or maybe use the square boxes in a circular pattern?

I didn't see the T in the negative space, but now I do. Very cool! Is there a way to have a similar design but not look like a flower if you didn't see the L and T? Also, I have seen some of your other designs for photography companies. Go wild and throw out some design logos that don't use letters. Let's see what hits the wall and sticks. :)

I really like these versions...more version 4 than version 3. The black and white version doesn't have the same impact as it doesn't have the color variation that comes with dark green and light green. Any way to give the black and white version more impact? I would also like to see more variations of version 4. This logo is going in the right direction. Clean flowing design with easy to recognize logo.

This is your best submission to date. The logo has great impact and the 3D is really eye catching. I like this version a lot. Only problem is that I don't think that I can use this as a lobby signage. Maybe you can use modify this version to make it more friendly for being able to carve the logo and hang on the wall?

I should probably clarify that I liked the Black and White version of Version 4 as this really caught my eye. I suggested that you redesign version 4 to make it carvable but now version 5 doesn't have the same effect. We might be going backwards here towards version 1 - 3. Version 4 is definitely heading in the right direction in terms of uniqueness, eye catching, and simplicity. Only problem was not being able to make it into signage. How about some more variations towards Version 4 even if it can't be used as a lobby signage. I might try to find another solution for that problem.

Offbeat Design Versions 1 - 5
Welcome to the forum and thanks for the five submissions. I will go through each version and just give impressions one by one.
Version 1 - Feels a bit like ITT Tech.
Version 2 - Same as version 1
Version 3 - More in line for which I am looking. The B/W version is better than the colored version. Maybe jazz this design up from it's simple box. Moving boxes? Interlocking boxes? Circles?
Version 4 - Probably too simple for me. Need some eye catching elements or something interesting to look at.
Version 5 - Too simple.

All Designers!! Great submissions so far. Thank you so much for your efforts. I like some of the concepts submitted so far and probably could go with a number of the submissions. I would like to see some "left field" submissions that do NOT use the letters L and T just to get a different flavor. Even if the logos are more complicated is fine but it must like it would belongs to a professional firm. Maybe something that denotes "Legendary" or "Best in Class." I would even consider logos with the word Legend though I generally prefer a picture concept rather than a word concept.

Thanks for the quick replies. Out of Versions 1 to 5, I like Version 2 the most from your concepts. I like the design factor in version 2 with the non-straight lines. It uses a box (thinking inside the box) with a non-boxy negative space (thinking outside the box). Can you design something that doesn't use the letter L and T or maybe something with the word Legend?

Thought the concept was ingenious with the rotating L and the negative space T. However, it might be too much of a flower for me. This version is less like a flower but also may be detracting for the original design as well. Of the version 1.0 and 1.1, I prefer 1.0 . However, I don't think 1.0 would work for me at this point. Thanks for the variation.

Can you give me a version where the Black and White version also pops like your color version? :D Most of the time, the logo will be printed using a black and white printer so the logo should look good without color. There can be variations with grey that would work. Maybe slightly wider spacing to give more negative space as well.

Variation from previous design. I like the concept but not the overall shape. The final logo has aa catepiller feel. Need to retool so the overall outer edge of design has a less caterpiller-like feel.

Can you give me different light effects for this diamond shape? Also, can you line up the points so that the points hit the cardinal directions?
Also, a separate request to see what a different version with one or two more parallelagrams would look like? Would this turn the shape from a square to a circle on the inside?

I like your original version 9 the best as the color really made feel like this was an artistic impression of the globe. The B/W version doesn't carry as well maybe due to the negative space being white and not contrasting as much withh grey scale.

Version 11 is meant to compliment the previous color version, not replace it, so you would be able to receive both sets of files (color, grayscale, and black and white) with the selected logo. Thanks.

I like version 9 better. With this version, the long horizontal bars take away from the effect and draw your attention, but it leads nowhere.

Hi,
Can you clarify this so DJ can revise; his icon essentially has the points in the cardinal directions...was this feedback intended for him or Alvin? I see you asked Alvin (Skyvee) for a similar revision.
Just trying to get some clarification.

I mean make each point of the diamond point at North, East, South and West. If you draw an imaginary line, then that line goes north-south or east-west. The current version has the North and South points that do not line up in one straight imaginary line.
I don't know what three parallelagrams instead of two would like like. Maybe a star. Just wanted to see the effect.
Additionally, are there any different lighting effects you can do?

Revision #3
The lighted versions are not printing well. Let's just try two solid green tones like your Giant's Version 4. Also, change the Legend Tax to look like Skyvee's Version 4 on page 1. Skyvee had a Big "Legend" with an underline leading to a small "Tax."
Any last suggestions besides using two solid green tones?

Can you make "TAX" spread evenly under the N and D of the word LEGEND? Also, is there a similar font that has more even thickness througout the letters? For example, the L has a thick vertical stem and a thinner vertical stem. Skyvee's version 4 is a good example.

2) Move underline underneath "Legend" to line up to 33% of the height of the of "Tax. See Alvin Version 4 for example.
3) Can you give me a couple other font variations that are similar to the one presented in Version 6.9
4) Color variation: PMS378U (Legend) and PMS377U (Tax). See Alvin Version 4 for example.
5) Color variation: PMS2748 (Legend) and PMS377U (Tax)

2) Can you give me a couple other font variations that are similar to the one presented in Version 6.9
3) Color variation for Version 6.10(c): Flip logo colors
4) Color variation for Version 6.11(a): Forest Green Legend and Black Tax. Put Forest Green on logo with right and left arrows and Black on top/bottom arrows.

I like the proportions used in Skyvee's version for Legend Tax. The "Tax" seems to be slightly fatter, the "a" is a little bit more left so that it is not exactly centered under the ND of Legend, and the Tax is a smidge higher/closer to Legend.
Is Tax using the same font as Legend? Let's go with the Giant Version 6.12(c) font for now and make the above proportion modificatins. If it can look like Skyvee's Legend Tax font/proportion, then I would be satisfied. Thanks.

Revision 6.13(c) is almost there. :) I like the one color and black variation.
1) Can you give me version 6.13(c) with PMS377U in place of PMS2748?
2) Another version of 6.13(c) with a shade of blue between PMS2748 and regular blue. Basically, I would like to see a slightly lighter shade.
3) A version of 6.13(c) with a darker shade of green than PMS377U.

2) Can you move the underline so that it is in the middle of the T in Tax just to see what this looks like?

Revision:
Actually, I think I didn't make myself clear. I am looking to see different solid colors with different shades of blue. In other words, I want to version 6.16(a) with a solid regular blue, version 6.16(a) with solid darker blue, and version 6.16(a) with a solid navy blue. These versions 6.16 have different gradations within the same logo.

The Version 6.17 (b) is about right. It's classic blue. Can you give me some lighter blues for comparison, PMS286 and PMS287, i'm guessing.
Also, the top of the letters seem lighter than the bottom. Can you just make it one solid color?

1) Can you move the T in Tax so that the vertical portion of the T lines up underneath and in the middle of the left part of the N in Legend? Currently, the outside left portion of the T lines up with the N. In other words, move it about 1mm to the left and adjust the remaining A and X according to scale.
2) Also, can you remove the lighting effects on the logo portion?
3) After changes #1 and #2, present the logos with PMS286/Black and another version with PMS377U/Black.
4) I assume the current versions are just rough drafts until we finalize the versions. Then you will clean up the art such as smoother lines to prevent jagged edges during printing, right?

Giant. Thanks for the great work. The files are great!! I do have some follow-up requests. Can you send the following:
1) On B&W version, can you make the Tax and the upper/lower arrows grey? The current version only has Black so you don't get any color gradation when you print on a B&W printer.
2) Tif files - Business card makers seem to like this format
3) Logo separate from words. There may be times where I only want the logo itself or the words in a different location than the current spacing.
Also, what program do I use to open the EPS and AI formats? Pardon the ignorance. :)

Hi Giant,
Can you email LEGEND TAX in AI format in the style of the business card using one font? I sent an email with a proposed business card. Currently, the LEGEND and TAX appear to be different fonts with TAX seemingly much thicker.
You had designed my Legend Tax logo. We are trying to finalize a business card today and tried to use the fonts that were provided on the design. Due to design constraints, we had to move Tax in line with Legend. When we enlarged the TAX from your design, the TAX font seems to be a lot thicker than the LEGEND which makes the LEGEND TAX seems mismatched. Is this correct? Any other font options?
I know we finalized the logo design so I hate to come back now. :(
