View Full Version : Student Ministry logo - $100
(Admin code added by Palmer - 655031)
We're very excited about what you all can come up with, it's clear you have lots of experience in working with church groups.
The name of our group is Light Force Student Ministries. You can get a feel for what we are about and what I'm after by checking out the Light Force homepage (http://fbcromeo.org/LightForce_home.htm). The name "Light Force" comes from Matthew 5:16 "let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Our group is all about being into the word of God and being active in our community.
Here's what I'm looking for. We are looking to really "brand" our youth group in the community. The logo will be used for our website, t-shirts, powerpoint type presentations and possibly newspaper ads. I'd also like to be able to get a black/white/grey version that looks OK printed on our laser printer for letters, that kind of thing. It should be no more than 3 colors. One idea we've tossed around would be for it to be based off of an old retro looking flashlight with Light Force printed on it like it's the brand of the flashlight... (see below) but we don't want to limit your creativity. (Except going with a space theme... that is lame.) I want something that isn't dorky and isn't so edgey that no one can figure out what it's all about.

Hello. I plan on trying a design later on today with a flashlight sort of thing but I figured I'd do this real quick:
<img src='http://www.automatikstudios.com/designoutpost/lightforce01.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Thanks for the early submission. Like I said before, I'm open to things that aren't tied into the flashlight idea.
As a note: I don't really want the "Student Ministries" part. The idea is to brand the words "Light Force."

(Hello All!)
Here is my first submission and first post:
[admin edit- Only members of the Design Team are permitted to enter contests, please follow the site guidelines (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=35&s=). Thanks :)]
Here's an idea with the flashlight...
Here's some feedback...
AutomatikStudios: I like the clean lines of the second submission... but it seems a little too bland for high schoolers. I'm not launching a website but I'm also not going seseme street. I want it to be something you'd see on MTV.
pennyln: I'm feeling the retro flashlight. Can you run with the "hip campster" thing? Maybe a "That 70's Show" feel? Our newly redone room is going for kind of a coffeehouse/indian sarri (sp) feel. Lots of deep reds, shades of browns, white candles, black iron.
You guys are awesome... just oozing with creativity. Keep it coming!

Here's my idea.

Hi,
here are a few ideas
Thanks
- Ed
Hey gang, I've been travelling all day. So, sorry for anyone who was looking for immediate feedback.
pennyln: I'm liking he retro feel... is there any way we can make the flashlight the focal point and put the letters on the flashlight? Now that I've seen a few flashlights I'm starting to think my original idea wasn't very good. Maybe it's too kiddie?
wwwzone: Thanks for your entry. It's not jumping out at me yet.
ejlain: I really like the colors you picked for the 2nd once from the top. It makes me think that you looked at my webpage! Can you use the same colors to come up with something a little more abstract. The "rays" are way too close to the exisitng logo. (Which is basically a sun with ray shooting out.)
I'd love to see something else pop up that is really from left field.... somthing totally new altogether. Again, please look around at our website and see if anything there inspires you. Also, please post any questions you have about us and I'd be happy to help out in that way.

Thanks, Palmer.
I have to say the talent here has really forced me to step up my designs a notch.
Greetings, sorry again for my "web silence," I'm back from my weekend trip now. Let me just comment on the last two entries.
ejlain: I'm very impressed with your last set. I especailly like the one that is second from the top. I showed it to a couple of my upperclassmen... they loved it, with the exception that they felt the colors were a little too fem. We need something that both male and females will like color wise too. (Sorry, I hadn't really thought that guys wouldn't wear baby blue, who knew?)
graphxguy: I agree with Palmer. This is a good entry. I like the abstract nature of how you used the sun... it really does relate to our verse. Thank you for that. If you'll scroll up a little higher to a comment made before you'll see that I want to shy away from rays since it's too close to our existing logo.
These are two solid entries. But I'm still looking for the "singing to me" factor.

A little Grunge....
-Anthony
Geez, having a hard time keeping up with the pace now! That's a great thing.
Disturb Reality: Thank you for your entry. Is it too blunt to just say I don't like it? It just says Batman to me. I'll put lightning on the list of things that isn't speaking to me. Our students (and the students we are trying to reach) are very marketing savvy. Less flash and more sophisticated.
Mute design: I want to shy away from using the sun and rays unless they are more abstract. I don't like the "grunge" version at all. Don't know if it's the colors, the font or what?
Thanks to all who are thinking and brainstorming. Hint hint... by far the logos that have drawn the most looks and positive comments from my students have been ejlain's (2nd from the top) and graphxguy's. At the same time I'm still waiting to see something that really pops.
Pastor Adam
Here's my submission.... :)
<!--QuoteBegin-disturbReality+Nov 2 2003, 05:30 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td>QUOTE (disturbReality @ Nov 2 2003, 05:30 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> it seems to me that you have asked for several conflicting styles and then shoot the styles down when you see them. [/b][/quote]
DisturbReality, you make a really good point. You are right on. I've never done anything like this so my biggest problem is that I'm so green at visual arts.
I have ideas, but sometimes when I see them as a mock-up I don't like them at all. (Like the flashlight thing.)
At this point I'm looking for something with one of these 3 variations.
1. An abstract sun with "light force" incorporated (e.g. What graphxguy and markbeaudry have come up with.)
2. Something retro and hip. Somewhere between what MUTE DESIGN came up with in his first set and the In-N-Out logo/signs. (For you CA/NV people this is a local icon... but for everyone else go to In-n-out homepage (http://www.in-n-out.com/))
3. What I call "the internet company" logo. Most of my students who have checked out this site like what dynagirl came up with for SitePop or all the cool variations you guys are doing for WiredCollector.com.
So... I hope this helps all you frustrated designers. Please understand that this is a process that is out of my comfort zone. But I am learning a lot too!
Pastor Adam
markbeaudry: This is a great entry. Can you please make a couple of variations? I'd like to see it with the same colors, but I'd like to see the logo shrunk down and between "Light" and "Force". Also, could you experiment with a couple of different fonts? I like the informal look but at the same time I'd like to see some variations. One other thing... I don't need the verse on the bottom. Thanks!
Pastor Adam
Here's some alternatives for you. :D

Here is attempt #2.
The concept is an abstract crown of thorns that also resembles light rays shining
out.....not sun rays, but light rays.
I stayed with the same colors and font since you didn't say anything about them in my last version. But if you'd like to see more colors or different fonts, I am happy to oblige.
Looking forward to your comments.
Lots of cool stuff happened today in here!
markbeaudry: these are all very good revision. I think I miscommunicated with you though. I was hoping to see these with more of a horizontal look rather than vertical with the sun thing in the middle. The colors are really great... want to keep this concept in that family of color. One word of caution as I tested it out with some people today... the logo thing may be so abstract that it could look like a flower or a sun. Guys in Michigan don't wear flowers... especially this close to huntin' season!
ejlain: love the color revisions. The LF thing is just begging for someone to throw that into a flash animation! As a sidenote... I don't like the new additions.
Raja: I like the creativity and the powerful feel... but what the heck is that thing? Also, the font is a little to difficult to read. Maybe something a little softer?
graphxguy: I like the simplicity of the design. But I liked the density of the first image too. Maybe it's the same color but the first colors popped out a bit more. I wouldn't want a really cool logo to get lost on a t-shirt. You know?
Well, I'm looking forward to this process continuing. Hope to see some revisions soon.

ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL CONTEST PARTICIPANTS!
I will be narrowing the field down to 3 finalist at 9:00 AM forum board time on Wednesday November 5th. (OK, maybe 4 finalists if there's a really good 4th one!)
Decisions will be based on the concept presented. Revisions to that concept will be requested of the finalists as needed. Once the revisions are in a final decision will be made. Yes, your making $100 largely depends on whether or not snot-nosed 17 year olds like your design... but since they are huge in the global economy, you are probably used to that!
So if you've been sitting on the sidelines or just getting back from your "procrastinators annonymous" meeting... you now have a deadline.
that is all... :D

Here's my idea about what a Light Force could be.
[thanks again, Mark ;) ]
Just as an update: I'll judge all concepts and announce finalists in about 16 hours. It is still wide open in my eyes. (I'd still love to see something in that "internet company logo" category.)
markbeaudry: Thanks for rocking the boat. I like the first design much better. They were very fun though...
MUTE DESIGN: Really like the In-n-out attempt. Can you change the wording to "Connect. Grow. Challenge" on top and "Matthew 5:16" on the botto? Also, along these design lines... can you get a lot closer to the in-n-out logo without copying it exactly? I'm not sure where that line is drawn. (Believe it or not, churches copy stuff mercilessly! The phrase is... if it's a good idea, it's worth stealing.)
graphxguy: with concept #1 I still like the original better. Can we keep the color density somehow while just lessoning the number of lines... maybe try one with no lines? The #2 concept looks cool. The crown thing is growing on me. Can you show me what it looks like with the "dish" behind the crown removed? Also, I don't care too much for the lines above and below "Light Force." Another thing worth looking at if you have time may be to give the crown a more thorny look? Maybe still distorted... I dunno. My brain can't comprehend such things.
Alex_Kogan: Thanks, but I'm just not in love with your concept.
I'll check in later tonight as needed!

Let me explain quickly: :D
Yellow, green and blue are symbolizing youth, because green is the symbol of life, yellow is the sun(energy) and blue is the water.
As in the Newton´s disc (the red was placed as green, red has nothing to do with life), if you rotate it you are going to generate the white light. The white is not a colour. It´s just the combination of three colours in a dynamic way (force is represented) !
The globe is the way to represent the humanity and love. The geodesical frame binds the circle in such a way that riminds force. (oh vitrals are nice)
The faith is simbolized in the centre.

hheine: thanks for your design. Now I know what it feels like when I start explaining intricacies of new testement theology and sub-themes to my students. I didn't get all that stuff that you explained but I do know that I'm intruiged by the design.
Can you make a revision for me? I'd like to see the logo thing between the "t" and "f" in light force and make the "l" in Light Force small caps. Also, we don't need the verse.
Thanks!

Phew! This has been harder than I thought. Getting this down to 4 finalists was not easy. There have been many, many good submissions. Thank you to all who have participated thus far.
Here are the finalist. (In alphabetical order and everything.)
eljain: loved your submission #3 (technically the forth one down with the grey and navy blue) As much as I liked the last set you sent in, the girls didn't like the football helmet feel. There's nothing you really need to change on this entry. If you wanted to I wouldn't mind seeing it in some more different colors.
graphxguy: The last submisssion is what I want to advance. Please see the notes I made yesterday about revisions.
hheine: I love the last minute submission. The last ones you submitted were great. Can you please revise with slightly darker lettering. I'm worried that "light force" will get lost on a t-shirt or in powerpoint presentations or in the newspaper. I'd like to see the lettering with a darker grey and also in the 3 bringht colors you chose that all mean something.
markbeaudry: I like the last submission, on the bottom. Can you please keep things the same, with only the original distrorted sun in the middle?
Again, thanks to everyone else who submitted entries. This will definitely not be our last contest.
As soon as we get the final entries from everyone I'll need about 24 hours to get opinions from my students. Then I'll announce a winner.

We are all together to bring the best of us to this great people that we even know nothing about ! We are together to grow...
I think that this place is the best idea that someone clould ever dream in this area. A gigantic virtual agency with no owners or rules, were people can express themselves in a freely way. This is reality. This is FREEDOM, Stephen. A clean and a fast way to create something, people will need for their existence and business, to generate richness for their families and friends.
Here, we are all winners. ;)
Palmer,
This thing is over. ejlain is the winner!
I'm sad to see this contest end. It has been great fun.
All of the people I had look at the finalists designs were very impressed. High schoolers, parents, volunteers and even a graphic designer from the church thought the final submissions were fantastic, yet the vast majority selected the same logo. You all did a great job and I wish there was a way I could pick all of the designs... but I only need one.
ejlain: We'd really like to receive files for the navy/grey and the red/yellow logos. Also, if I could get a file that has them in black/white that would be great for newpaper ads.
Again. Super job. I couldn't be happier with the results. I will be back as soon as I find another project.
