Contest: Logo for http://www.wiredcollector.com
Deadline: November 15, 2003
Prize: $100

Hello Everybody,

This is my first contest and I’m looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

I need a logo designed for a website I’m currently working on. The website will be completely redesigned around the new logo, so don’t base your design on the sites current look.

Also, the logo will be the only image used on the website and it will appear at the top of every page (probably centered), so it needs to be wider than it is tall, kind of like a masthead.

I’m so graphically challenged, that I need a logo that can function as a masthead and I can just put it on the top of every page and then just concentrate on the content of the site.

I’m open to letting you use your creativity, but you do need to keep the file size down as to allow fast loading. I tend to like simple and timeless designs using limited colors or several shades of the same color. Any graphics need to be subtle with the main emphasis on the name.

I need the words "Wired Collector" and the tagline "Your online connection to everything collectible" incorporated into the logo. The words "Wired Collector" can be one or two words and all of the text can be in upper case, lower case or a combination.

Winner to supply web optimized images upon selection. Thanks and good luck in the contest.

You guys are really fast! I didn't think I would see anything for at least a couple of days. Anyway, I'll try to leave feedback on a daily basis, including the weekends. I'll try to be as direct as I can on the feedback, so you don't waste your time going in the wrong direction. Please don't take this directness negatively.

Here's the feedback for this batch in order of post…

Coredesign - Really don't care for the font. Overall image size is a little too tall. Red and black is fine, but maybe a little darker red. Lime green and black is fine, but maybe more intense on the lime green.

DisturbRealty - Overall size needs to be wider, but not quite as tall. Don't like the drop shadow, color or font.

AutomatikStudios - Overall size seems to be just about right. Like the 2 different thick nesses of the fonts but don't like the font itself. The green color would be fine, if it was more intense, but I don't care for the blue color. The wired connection between the letter D and C is interesting, but doesn't quite make it for me.

Pennyln - Your first one needs to be wider and not quite as tall. The height on the second and third image is fine, but both need to be wider. Don't really care for any of the color combinations and I don't like the WC, the dingbat or the decorative line. Also need the tag line in the logo. You can find it in my original post.

AutomatikStudios - Again the size is just about right. The orange and black colors are fine. Don't care for the font and the spacing is too close between some of the letters. The image would look better on the left, but I don't like this particular image. The tagline is just a little too close to the text above.

KelliShaver - Kind of interesting, but not what I'm going for, took me a few minutes to figure out that the image was a computer tower with wires coming out. Overall image height is fine, but width needs to be wider. Don't really care for the colors, would like to see some bolder, more unusual colors as well as some nice pastels. I do like the way you separated Wired and Collector with the image. Also, in the tagline, the word collectable should be spelled collectible. Don't really care for the font and all text needs to be taller.

KelliShaver - Another interesting take, but still not there. I do like the separation between the word Wired and Collection (which should be Collector), but I don't like that you had to separate the tag line. Overall image height is fine, but again needs to be wider. Still don't care for the colors. Also, the word collectable in the tagline should be collectible.

MuteDesign - What can I say, nice start, but just not my style. Don't like the color combinations at all, they look too dated to me. Don't like the drop shadows, images or fonts. Image one and two is fine on the height, but both need to be wider. Image three is just a little too tall and also needs to be wider. Don't want anything with jaggies, like the electric plug has, and the plug is just too cutesy for me. I also don't want any splashes like the large red one behind the text on image three. Also don't care for the tagline when it crosses the red splash, it looks like the text is outlined in white.

KelliShaver - This image is not showing up, so I can't comment on it.

Well gang, I guess that's it for now. Nice start from everybody, but nothing so far has really spoken to me. Keep those designs coming. Thanks

Here's the feedback for this batch in order of post…

DisturbRealty - Your second image is pretty close to the size I envisioned. The colors are fine, but they really don't grab me that much, was hoping for something else. Really don't care for the graphics in these particular images. Don't like the font in the first image. The font in the second image is fine, but was hoping for something more distinctive.

DynaGirl - Thanks for entering the contest. The overall size of the image is fine, maybe just a little to tall. Don't really care for the key image, looking for something different and more unusual. Would really prefer more than one color in the image. The word "Guide" in the tagline should be "Connection".

GraphxGuy - Thanks for entering also. Overall width seems just about right. The height could be just a tad taller. Colors are fine, but really looking for something different. Don't care for the font. The tagline needs to be taller, it's hard to read and not very clear. Also, the word "Guide" should be "Connection". Don't really like the graphics.

KelliShaver - Thanks for posting the new image. I like the font a little better, but still not what I'm looking for. Still don't care for the colors. Overall image height is just about right, could be a tad taller, but still needs to be wider. Don't care for the W and the C in the circles.

Thanks again everybody

Thanks for all the new postings and to the new contestants who entered the contest. Please keep the ideas coming. I know just the right logo is out there somewhere.

Here's the feedback for this latest batch of postings...

Raja - I like the logo with the orange background better than the one with the white background. I really had not thought of going with a background color other than white, but it has possibilities. Needs a different font for the text and the tagline is a little hard to read. Take a look at my attached image with a different layout of my website and your logo design for additional ideas. Please keep other new ideas coming though.

DisturbRealty - Don't care for the colors or the image on the first logo. The second logo is not bad, but it still doesn't grab me. Let's see some new ideas.

Pennyln - It's getting more interesting. I like the graphic in the second logo best, but I like the font with the 2-tone treatment of the letter "I" in the first logo, although the tagline is a little blurry. The colors still don't grab me.

DynaGirl - These are interesting also. The graphic on the left and the tagline below the website name is what I had pictured in my head. Not crazy about the colors or the fonts though. Also an interesting take on one of the letters might also be interesting.

Gilles Le Bon - These are unusual. Overall image would need to be wider though. Don't really care for any of the fonts and some different colors might help.

Thanks for all the new postings and to the new contestants who entered the contest. Please keep the ideas coming. I have expanded my choices for a logo, which should allow for greater flexibility in your designs. Therefore, you can try designs with or without the tagline and with a colored background, as well as a smaller logo size to be used in a colored header which would be centered at the top of the page. Take a look at the image in my previous post to get an idea of what I'm thinking.

Here's the feedback for this latest batch of postings...

DisturbRealty - Thanks for the new entries. Your first logo is nice, but I don't care for the pink color of the starburst. On the second logo, I don't care for the graphic or the colors.

DynaGirl - It's looking better, but still does not grab me at this point. Keep those ideas coming. Take a look at my expanded guidelines above.

Raja - I like the background on this one, but I liked the graphic you had on your previous design better. Still don't care for the font though.

Alex Kogan - Welcome to the contest Alex. Thanks for the hard work, but these particular designs are just too funky for my taste. Keep your ideas coming though, you just never know when something will strike my fancy.

Hheine - Thanks for the hand. I really like the image in your second design. This is very close to what I had in mind for just a little something extra to go with the text. Not to flashy or cartoon like, but just subtle enough to add some pizzazz. Save a copy of the second image, but let's try some changes to a copy of it. Try using some different fonts for the text, maybe on a colored background, maybe the overall logo height and width can be made smaller, maybe the words "Wired Collector" could be made one word and on one line, maybe try it without the tagline, maybe some different complimentary colors to the graphic for the text. You get the idea; I really like the image, but not quite there on the text.

Raja - Thanks again for your new entry. However, the image is just to cartoon like for my taste. Let's keep trying something different. Take a look at my expanded design guidelines above for some additional ideas.

SideFX - Welcome to the contest and thanks for your first entry. Overall size is just a little to big if I decide to use my original design guidelines (of kind of like a masthead to be centered at the top of the page). Take a look at the expanded guidelines above for greater flexibility. I like the dark gray color you have, but the green would not be my choice for a complimentary color to the gray.

Thanks everybody for the latest designs. This contest is still wide open and does not end till November 15, 2003, but you can take a look at my feedback for "Hheine" to see the type of style I'm finding attractive.

Here's the feedback for this latest batch of postings...

DisturbRealty - Hi Jon, thanks for the post. Not seeing anything in this group that I care for. Keep trying though.

Hheine - I like the color combination of the graphic in design number two of your first post the best so far. Let's take that image and resize it to the size of the image in design number five in your second post. Don't use a bevel; leave it like it is except for the size. Use the text in the number five post of your second post, drop the period on the tagline, and reposition the tagline as needed. Save a copy of that as our baseline design. I would then like to see this design with the above changes, as well as the same design with the W and the C of the name capitalized. Please add any "new ideas" you have as well as the above design with some additional font choices also.

Alex Kogan - Hi Alex, thanks for the post. These latest designs are interesting, but still not calling out to me. Let's see some more.

Over the next few days, I will start to narrow down my design choice, but there’s still plenty of time to come up with the winning design. But as of this moment, I am most drawn to the overall design by “Hheine”. His graphic seems to reflect someone using a keyboard without being too cartoon like. The keyboard reflects the word “Wired” and the hand reflects the word “Collector”. But let’s keep trying, you never know when your next design will change my mind. Thanks!

Here’s my feedback for the latest posts…

DiturbRealty – Thanks for the two new designs. The graphics still do not have the meaning I’m looking for. They seem too general for what I was looking for. You see lots of logos with a shooting star and they really don’t say anything about the company or website.

Hheine – Thanks for the two new designs, but I like some of your others better. So far, I like your graphic with the hand the best. It reflects someone using a keyboard without being too cartoon like. The keyboard reflects the word “Wired” and the hand reflects the word “Collector”.

So far, I like your overall concept the best, so let’s start making some minor adjustments. From your post of Nov 4 2003, 07:40 AM, use design number_5 and make the following adjustments. Keep the same size of all elements but center the hand horizontally on the keyboard and then group together and center horizontally on the green box. That way we have the same amount of spacing around the hand and keyboard. Also, drop the period at the end of the tagline and reposition accordingly. I’m still not sure on the font for the word “wiredcollector”. The way the font is designed, it gives the illusion that there is a lot more spacing between the letters “r” and “e” in “wired” than it does between the other letters. I want to use the same orange and green colors with the white line going through the center and the slight drop shadow you have on the text, so I think it still needs to be a thick font, but if you look at the font you used in design number_4, the spacing appears much better. See what you can come up with as far as the font is concerned.

Alex Kogan – Thanks for the four new designs, but these are not quite what I’m looking for. The graphic does not have quite the meaning I’m looking for. Also, I really don’t care for the colors or font selections in these designs.

Gilles Le Bon – These latest designs are too big. Looking for something with fewer colors and less busy. Can I see something with just the word “WiredCollector” and maybe a play on one or more of the letters?

Raja – This is nice. Can you try it with the name to the right of the image and maybe with a different font for the name? You might also try some different colors and maybe without the bevel on the graphic. Let’s also see any other ideas you have.

Hi Wolf. Designers have their proper vocabulary. I´m really trying to reach your spectations. We are really trying that. Big is not a objective property for us. We can try to use cm, pixels, points, picas.

What do you want ? Palmer, can you give some help here ?

Hello :) ,

Here are a few ideas. I changed the colors, made the design simple, trying to get rid of the busy aspect you were telling me about (in no.#1 I left just a single zeros and ones circle). The logos have only three colors right now and I tried something different this time. I attached them to the website so you can have an image of how they look, to check if the size is correct..Don't worry about the size though, it can be very easily changed to fit your exact needs.

Best regards,
Gilles. :D

Thanks for all the latest entries everybody. There’s still plenty of time for any new design ideas. I want be making my decision until around 7:00 PM Pacific Standard Time (United States) on Saturday. So feel free to submit any new entries, you never know what I will like.

Here’s the feedback for the latest posts…

Hheine – Hi Henrique, I’m sorry for any misunderstanding. I thought my previous post about using the size of your design “number_five” was pretty clear. If you still have this particular version of the design (number_five, from your post of Nov 4 2003, 07:40 AM), then all you would need to do is center the hand horizontally on the keyboard and then group the hand and keyboard together and center horizontally on the green box. Leave everything else as it is. With this done, this will be one of the top three designs I will make my selection from on Saturday.

If you no longer have this particular version of the design, then you can use the size information I provided below. Review your design “number_five” from the post of Nov 4 2003, 07:40 AM for the style and placement of the text.

The overall image size is about 568 pixels wide x 129 pixels tall which includes about 20 pixels of white space around all four sides. The graphic with the hand is about 108 pixels wide x 108 pixels tall. The two lines of text combined are about 433 pixels wide x 78 pixels tall. If you combine the graphic and the text, but without any white space around all four sides, the size is about 548 pixels wide x 109 pixels tall with about 7 pixels of horizontal spacing between the graphic and the text.

I really hope I was clear in my wishes this time. Thanks for all your hard work.

Taldo – Thanks for entering the contest. I like your entry, its clean, simple, but with a little something extra with the graphic. It just goes to show that a last minute entry can be competitive. Your design is now one of the top three I will make my selection from on Saturday. Care to enter some additional designs?

Gilles Le Bon – Hi Gilles, thanks for the new entries. Still to big, for what I had in mind. I will be re-designing the website around the new logo, so I’m not really set in stone on the size. It can be large or small, as long as it strikes my fancy. However, these particular designs would probably look best about the size I tried to describe in the feedback for “Hheine”. Please read that feedback for more details.

I’m still not crazy about the graphics and I really don’t know what I will like until I see it. So throw any and all ideas you have at me. We still got time. You can also try smaller versions of a logo, logos without a graphic, or maybe just a play on the letters or words. This contest is still wide open, and anybody can take the prize at the last minute.

Raja – Sorry, I know I’m not much help on the fonts. I know what I like when I see it but I just don’t have any specific examples. I really don’t care for the standard fonts such as Arial, Times Roman, Futura and those types of fonts. I tend to like more unusual fonts that have classic good looks and timeless appeal, although that probably doesn’t help you at all. Whatever font is used, the letter “W” needs to be smooth looking. The “W” in most fonts always appears jagged.

Alex Kogan – Very nice. It’s simple and clean while still being interesting. It might be a little hard for someone to read the words, but I’m not sure at this point. I will take some additional looks at in the next 24 hours. But nice job overall. Don’t be shy about throwing some additional designs out there though.

One man's trash is another man's... collectible.

Sure it was ! We missed the point... Designers are not concerned about the size. Proportion is a better word, because size is something you can change at your own will without any effort. Incidentally I posted a logo with exactly the size you were looking for. I even realized that at that time !

Sure I have. Oh, those are pretty much the size of it. Very good ! :D

Well this contest has officially come to an end. I would like to thank everybody who entered and for all your hard work. The last minute entries made it even harder to choose a design, but in the end I chose the design from "hheine".

Congratulations Henrique
