Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?SPECTONE
What type of product or service do you offer?
We offer remanufactured and new compatible laser printer toner cartridges, inkjet cartridges, copier toner cartridges and thermal ribbons. We will not carry OEM/Original product.
How long have you been in business?
SPECTONE is a new B2C start-up, our group of companies has been in the aftermarket toner supplies business since 1991.
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
Create an online brand that consumers and businesses recognize and trust to deliver quality imaging supplies quickly and consistently.
What are your long term goals?
(1) Repeat business (2) High volume sales (3) Brand equity (4) High level of consumer comfort when ordering our product
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
December 31, 2008
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience.
Home consumers with very little to zero product knowledge, SOHO consumers that know what they’re looking for, small to mid size businesses that buy larger quantities, basically anyone shopping for toner on the web that’s looking for a good value.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
Everyone
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
Clean, pleasing to look at, memorable, and does all three on the web, on boxes and letterhead.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black (CMYK) because we have a strong line of color laser toner cartridges and we sell multicolor inkjet cartridges… I have no preference for text color, and the use of CMYK or RBG is not 100% necessary, just an idea. I’m open to many designs. Attached is the general theme/look and feel that we are working with. I am not attached to the logo in place.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
All industry related images and icons that I’m aware of are over used, but I would like an image or icon to be used and I would like it to be unique, possibly centered around or incorporated to some degree into the text… surprise me.
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Professional, precise, consistent, reliable, knowledgeable
What is your tagline or slogan?
Don’t have one yet
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
We are the best value for printer supplies
Where will your new logo be used?
Website, packaging, letterhead
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
OEM/Original suppliers, various web suppliers. OEM logos such as HP, Brother, Samsung, Canon, Xerox, etc… their logos are the best because consumers consider their quality to be the best. Most web suppliers that sell non-OEM supplies sell it as generic, no brand name, just a web logo.
List competitive URLs if possible:
www.4inkjets.com (http://www.4inkjets.com/)
www.inkjetsuperstore.com (http://www.inkjetsuperstore.com)
www.123inkjets.com (http://www.123inkjets.com)
www.priceless-inkjet.com (http://www.priceless-inkjet.com)
www.asapinkjets.com (http://www.asapinkjets.com)
You have an inkjet or laser printer at home/office? Google search your supply – there are our competitors and our primary sales channel. We will also do some direct marketing later.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Price, Quality and Availability. Plus we have an actual brand name that we are willing to put on the product and we stand behind that. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Let me see some logos first :D

Here is the current site theme which has been created for Spectone.com, I would like the logo designs to jive with it.

Tyler, thank you for being the first to post, I'm very excited.
1. I like the symmetry and the circular shape of the logo. Can you make it a bit more thick and/or a bit smaller? I'm not so attached to the sickle shape.
2. Is there any way to make the yellow stand out more? I mean, it stands out because it is yellow, I just don't want it to look washed out. Could the colors be placed on black somehow?
3. Can you play around with the text?
4. I would like both the logo and text to be recognizable on a box from a distance, as if it were on a store shelf.
What about splitting CMY into thirds (maybe in bocks) and placing SPECTONE on the colors? That may be too much, just throwing an idea out there.
Surprise me!
Cheers - David

I think it's worth noting that I just spent the past 30 minutes (at least) commenting in detail to every post made so far... I hit the tab button to go 5 spaces, then I hit backspace... bye bye, logged out, all gone. My apologies.
I will, again, respond at length in the morning. Cheers - David

Hello all designers, thanks for the great posts, we're on the right track.
Regarding the CMYK color scheme, I know these colors are not easy to use together. If someone can pull it off that would be fantastic, but again I must say it is not necessary. That being said, please take another look at the 2nd post I made which is the site theme/layout for Spectone.com. Take that into consideration and show me some logos that work well with this theme that may or may not make use of the CMY color scheme. I'm wide open to good design and not fixed on colors.
Xpressions v.1: I like how you have incorporated a logo into the text, and I like what you did with the yellow, it's easier to see. I'm not too fond of the bullseye, in my opinion it doesn't look clean and precise which is what we're looking to portray, but it is memorable and that is something we are looking for. Please show me something new when you have time.
Glyphica v.1: I like this one and it is our web designers favorite due to it's print clarity, symmetry and cleanliness. The yellow still gets a bit lost, I don't know how to get away from that other than by surrounding it with another color. Please show me some variations in the logo design and the text.
Glyphica v.2: I like it because it is unique and simple, and I like how you treated CMY by making them represent a letter, great idea, but I have been instructed by the powers that be that placing everything on/within black is not a good idea for print, and that the E may be hard for some people to make out.
Glyphica v.3: The S in black is bit redundant. The size of the black area is a good size for the logo to be, eventually.
Deanna v.1: Great first offering, but I need to stay away from the large black area containing everything. The SPECTONE text needs to be alone. Please let me see some of your ideas for a separate logo that works with the site look and feel.
Ron v.1: Ron, this was my personal favorite. GREAT idea to control and define the colors, especially yellow, and very unique, simple, modern and fun with the droplet... we do sell inkjets. Can you play around with the shape? Our web designer prefers it to be symmetrical and I do understand why. Also, can you lose the shadow and play around with the text? I would really like to see another design from you.
LutFi v.1-2: Nice firsts posts, especially v.2, very creative with the S. I like the sizes you chose for both the logo and text. I need to stay away from a letter in the logo, please send me something new when you have time.
Tyler v.2: Nice to see one from you. This one has potential... can you reduce the amount of black and change the shape and direction of the colors? I'm not too keen on the piece of paper in the middle, I know what it is but some people may not. The text should be larger in comparison to the logo. Please keep going, v.2 is quite different that v.1, I can tell you put a lot of thought into it.
All designers, I will post another image next, it's the international symbol for toner. It's not necessary for you to use it, just a symbol that generally represents a category of items that we sell, just take from it what you can.
I will continue to search for logos and designs that I like and post them for you to see.
Again, thank you all for the great work and I look forward to seeing some new posts up here over the weekend. If you are traveling next week, have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving Holiday.
David

CMYK is not design to be shown together but are used to together to give us the beauty of color.
This in mind here's a unique prospective of the international toner symbol as a ink logomark.

Designers, thanks for the new posts.
Fabian, thank you for joining the thread. You're first post is interesting, can you offer some variation on it, possibly with less going on inside the drop shape?
Dewa Jaya, we like V5 an V6 the most. V5 shows the yellow better, and it's a clean, compact mark. We are looking for something simple and unique, you are working in the right direction.
