Design Outpost Creative Brief Worksheet

Project Summary:

- What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
MMW Creative Group, Inc.

- What type of product or service do you offer?

My business is an umbrella group of creative services, for the following entertainment industries: publishing (writing, songwriting), music (performance, songwriting, production), and acting (voiceover, print modeling, etc.)

- How long have you been in business?

Incorporated May 2008. Otherwise, since 2002.

- What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

I am a small business owner trying to create a professional brand mainly for awareness and networking purposes, eventually for business and creative collaboration.

- What are your long term goals?

I intend over time to branch out and create subsidiary businesses within this main creative grouping, and once I've secured the business names, will seek separate logos and branding for each of these businesses.

The overarching business brand will be me - my name. Think Trump, Oprah, etc. They dabble in various projects, but their name represent them as people, as business owners, as creative project managers, as a brand. In this case my surname is shared by too many people so I chose my initials for the name. But I want the initials to be powerful, very recognizable, over the coming years.

Although I am a small personal business now I am going for a powerful brand that I can grow and make a major impact with.

- When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

Dec 9, 2008

Audience Profile:

- Please describe your existing audience

None, I'm waiting until I build the brand base properly (website, logo, etc.)

- Who would you like to add to your audience?

Venture capitalists, angel investors, creative talent I can partner with or hire for projects (producers, musicians, stylists), and editors/agents for publishing companies and publications.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:

- What type of logo would you like?

Bold, text based, simple, clean, powerful without being too conservative or old. See logo links at the bottom. I would like a logo that isn't too long, so I'm particularly interested in a stacked logo with the initials above the "creative group, inc."

Also, "inc." can be much smaller or otherwise "minimized" compared to the "mmw creative group" portion. "mmw" can also be much larger/emphasized over "creative group."

For background, I ended up with this business name because shorter variations of my initials and variations like "MW Group" were taken by other businesses. I couldn't use just my surname (Wynn) because the surname is common and Steve Wynn has pretty much taken it over with the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas.

So, the initials are most important here for defining me, my name. I want them to be remembered like JFK, Oprah, JD, AIG, etc.

- Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

Probably black and white. This is me as a corporate brand - official, I mean business. I am open to other color suggestions, but this is my initial inclination. It's clean, stark, direct, bold, simple, honest, direct.

- Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

None really. I would like to see you play with a callout box, like the initials in white on a black square above "creative group, inc." I want to keep it simple so I don't have to worry about color printing or fancy graphics, and it's easy to reproduce and recognize.

Communication Strategy:

- What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

See above. I am serious, dynamic, a go-getter, bold, serious, honest, smart, straight, direct, clear, deliberate, inspired. Classy. Youthful in spirit but adult in wisdom. This logo must reflect that.

- What is your tagline or slogan?

none

- What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

I am a credible, "together" business that is successful, desirable, professional, skilled. I'm going to be around for a long time. I am worth remembering. I'm impressive. Accomplished. Accredited. Clever. Formidable.

- Where will your new logo be used?

I will use this logo on my business website, business cards, stationery, and might end up using it for things like pens - corporate branding and promotional situations. (For example, sponsoring an event or venture, my logo would be included with the sponsors, etc.)

Competitive Positioning:

- Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

n/a

What sets you apart from your competitors?

I am professional, resourceful, dedicated, thorough. I am extremely talented, skilled in business, discerning, and (rare) - honest. I do not manipulate or play games, I believe in honest, fair business relationships that get mutually beneficial results. I am not a drama queen, scattered, or afraid of hard work - I am persistent and determined to get results no matter what it takes.

Targeted Message:

- State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

dynamic and visionary

ADDENDUM

- I'd like to see both caps and lowercase versions
- avoid italics and heavy bolding (a firm line is ok, a fat line is not)
- I'm female. Although this is going to be a corporate brand, I also don't want to overcompensate with too much testosterone ... "powerful" does not have to mean a big BOOM it can mean a simple, clear, crisp statement. Comparison - a bulldozer vs. a hammer, I'm looking for something more like a hammer. Elegantly simple. :)
- The "youthful" aspect is important - I want to appear forward thinking, innovative, clever. So not "stuck in my ways" or "entrenched." Nimble. Open-minded. (See the icon logo for an idea of what I mean by innovative, open-minded.)

Thanks!

Here is an initial idea based of your examples. :)

Thanks, Tyler! A little too "heavy" and the italics are too much. Also there is no need to repeat the "MMW" in two places, one should be enough. I do like the colors, and the contrast, you're starting off in the right direction!

In general for all designers, I should clarify a couple things:

- I'd like to see both caps and lowercase versions
- avoid italics and heavy bolding
- I'm female. Although this is going to be a corporate brand, I also don't want to overcompensate ... "powerful" does not have to mean a big BOOM it can mean a simple, clear, crisp statement. Comparison - a bulldozer vs. a hammer, I'm looking for something more like a hammer. Elegantly simple.

Thanks!

Tyler, LutFi, Schnickerdoodle, giant, OffbeatDesign, Rongen:

Oh my gosh I am getting so excited seeing your wonderful designs! These are really moving in the direction I am going for, and I can really see my brand stirring to life!

A little bit of feedback for you all:

- Abstracts: I do like the clever play on my initials, and in fact this is something I encourage. However, please be careful to avoid being too abstract or complex with the "play" and geometry.

A person still has to be able to see the sign on a huge billboard from far away and up close on a document and be able to recognize what the initials spell. In several cases I like the overall shape but there are either too many details or too abstract a shape. This leads to you seeing only the MW, or seeing an M with weird shapes, or there is so much going on there's nowhere for the eye to settle.

So, reminders of the theme: simple and elegant.

Clever and hip is encouraged, but simple and elegant should outweigh those. It is more important for people to read M - M - W than to see an interesting shape.

This was a tendency I noticed in at least one of each of your designs, so that's why this is group feedback.

- Fonts: Let's avoid overly "round-bellied" fonts. A font that is too wide/round makes the brand look too friendly, too jolly.

- Number of Designs: For those who've submitted at least 3 ideas already, I don't want to make you slave away so please be assured I'm pleased with EVERYTHING I'm seeing so far, and want to be sure I give others a chance to put in an idea or two if they're willing. (I'd totally love to see more but please feel no obligation to make tweaks to the ones you've submitted already if you've submitted more than 3.)

Thanks so much guys, these are looking wonderful!

All, I've been asked to actually post feedback on each and every design, so here we go :)

Tyler, this is my favorite of yours. i like that the central M stands out, I like the play of contrast black/white, the ball (implies global domination, which is my master plan), and I like the curve of the remaining text beneath the ball.

Very clever!

LutFi - V.1

I like the clean simplicity, and the creative use of the shared lines of each initial. I like the stacking.

I do not like the fonts, for either the initials or the "Creative Group, Inc." Particularly the second set of text, it is too round and friendly.

The fonts here seem a little too friendly, and do not infer "cleverness" or "intelligence."

***

LutFi - V.2

Celver use of stacking the initials. However when you step back and look at the overall shape I see an interesting "dna" kind of shape, or interesting pattern, but I don't really see the initials. It is important to recognize the initials as part of the brand rather than create an interesting graphic that defines the brand and happens to be made of initials if you look really really closely.

Font - same feedback as V.1.

***

LutFi - V. 3

Like the cutout within the blackbox, and the contrast in colors. Same problem with the overall shape being interesting and dynamic but not actually calling out the initials.

Font - same feedback as V.1.

***

LutFi - V. 4

Really like the shading and sharpness of the inner triangles, it reminds of tuxedos. However I think this is too masculine and blocky, and a little too sharp. I guess I don't necessarily want to be associated with triangles. :)

I do like the font of the "Creative Group, Inc."

***

LutFi - V. 5

I like the lettering on "Creative Group, Inc" here more than #4.

Don't like the "wave" shape, I'm not sure what you'd call that, for the initials.

***

LutFi - V. 6

REALLY like the compact nature of this logo. Very clean, bold, clever, to the point, and quirky. However, it really looks like just a single "m" with a lot of shadows, and the "w" is completely lost. That's the trade-off, though, with making it so compact. So this one would need work to better define the "m m w" as distinct letters while remaining compact.

Also like the "Creative Group, Inc" font, here, seems vaguely tech, in a good way.

***

shnickerdoodle studios - V. 1

I really like this, bold, simple, edgy. Particularly like the "Creative Group Inc" font and spacing, balances well with the initials up top. Don't like the corner tabs, this implies this is going to get stitched onto something, which may have been intentional but is a little too edgy in this case. So's the computer-like font for the "mmw."

***

LutFi - V. 7

I like the creative handwriting of the "mmw". However this is too "H&M" brand-like.

I like the box above the "Creative Group, Inc". I sort of like the "Creative Group Inc" font, but not as much as other fonts you've used.

***

giant - V. 1

I keep coming back to this one. I like it, but I think not for my case.

I think my concern is that again, I like the creative use of my initials to make another shape, but I do not want the shape to dominate the initials, I want it to be the other way around. So, I don't necessarily want a star to be the recognized symbol for my brand. But it is a very clever usage, and I like that cleverness.

I realize you emphasize the creative use of the initials by bolding the same initials to clarify, but in the end this is using the initials twice, and uses the logo to actually explain what you are seeing. It's really too much work for a viewer to instantly recognize the symbol actually is made of letters that spell "MMW."

The font of "Creative Group, Inc." is a little too rounded/bold, and the fact the MMW has to be bold makes the image uneven/unbalanced for me.

***

giant - V. 2

I like the clever use of space for a smaller logo, but all the above feedback applies. Too abstract, initial are lost, you have to think too hard to see the "MMW" in the image above.

(more to come!)

giant V. 3
Similar comments to V.2 - I like the vaguely tuxedo shape.

But the graphic to the left is too abstract, and has to be explained above the "Creative Grou, Inc."

Font is ok, slightly too round.

MMW is too bold/large.

Stacking/balance of the graphic/MMW/Creative Group, Inc. is not working for me - left-aligned, top bottom, a lot going on, the image doesn't feel "balanced."

giant v. 4
I like the balance of a block shape on top of the "Creative Group, Inc."

However, graphic is too heavy/corporate/masculine (very fat block for MMW), letters too thick. I like the forward shape/suggestion of dynamic movement.

LutFi v. 8

Fun, crisp, clear letters - I like that. Also really like the "Creative Group, Inc" font.

But overall too bohemian/independent record company in feel. Also don't really feel the elongation of the M and W legs for the box shape.

OffbeatDesign v. 1
Crisp, clever, interesting, dynamic. Like the clear, crisp, slender lines of the "Creative Group Inc" font. Balance of the box above the "MMW Creative Group Inc" - way overpowering, too much.

"mmw" box is too abstract, you have to work to see the "mmw" and clarify it with the "MMW" next to "Creative Group Inc."

Also too heavy of a difference between the text "MMW" and the "Creative Group Inc" standing next to each other.

Also, the comma before "Inc" has been dropped and should be included.

OffbeatDesign v. 2

Same comments re: the font for V. 1

Graphic A and B are interesting, fun, definitely intriguing. However far too abstract and the main lettering you'll see is "MW" not "MMW." Kind of busy, and also a sense of imbalance. Distracts and does not complement the text of the logo. They work against each other.

"A" the bottom of the graphic is very heavy, "B" the top is too heavy.

Overall logo is too long, left to right.

OffbeatDesign v. 3

My favorite of your designs so far! I like the stacking idea. I definitely like B better, the separation of the boxes is precise, classy, light.

The overall logo from left to right is still too long, and the difference in height of the capitals (CGI) vs. the lowercase in the font is too large. I do like the crispness of the font, though, particularly the MMW lettering.

The comma has been dropped before "inc."

OffbeatDesign V. 4

Definitely bold, with an interesting graphic.

The left-hand font (MMW) is too old-fashioned, and large. The right-hand font (Creative Group, Inc) has no comma, is italics, and too noticeably small/different from the MMW. THe graphic is too abtract and "MW" can be seen if you look closely enough, losing an initial.

I like the mirroring/balance idea. The location of the graphic, balanced overall with the text, feels overly large.

OffbeatDesign v. 5

I like the looping/interlocking of the MMW, however it reads "MWM" because of this. I like the stacking of the box evenly, balanced on top of the "Creative Group Inc."

The "Creative Group Inc" is overly round-bellied but I like the slender, bold presentation of the lines.

The ""MWM" font is also too round. While I like the linking idea, this is too jolly/less professional looking.

Rongen v. 1

Very fun and clever Rongen! You're right, we can definitely have fun. I think, however, for the audience and market I'm going for, fun should lean toward "witty" and less toward "carefree." There's a loss of professionalism when you cross that line.

This logo loses the identification of the actual business, and relies on "MMW" alone as represented through a creative collection of symbols. Definitely interesting, clever, and fun, but a lot happening to parse, very busy, and many images placed together on top of one another with no clear statement of or about the business. I basically see a girl with a lot of fun interests who's initials are MMW. That does not actually convey a business or a brand.

I hope you'll use it in future for a lucky client, but this one isn't suitable for the age or industry of my audience or the image I'd like to present. This is probably more suitable for a younger, creative/artist/community audience, rather than a professional corporate demographic.

Thanks for breaking out of the box though!

Lutfi v. 9

Very interesting. I keep waffling on this one. My first instinct - I like it. Crisp, clean, dynamic, sharp, clever. I love the clean lines, of the graphic MMW and the "Creative Group, Inc." The balance feels just right.

I'm concerned that the MMW will look a little architectural, like a skyline, or mountains, particularly the W portion, it looks like the roof of a house with a tall chimney. I'm again concerned that I dont' want a particular symbol or shape to define my brand, but the initials themselves.

So I guess - it's OK to play with the initials but we have to be careful of playing too much.

OffbeatDesign v. 6

I really like the shape of this box and the slight imbalance with the "MMW" typeface look. I like the lowercase.

There is an imbalance of the box vs. the "Creative Group Inc."

The comma is dropped again, and the font for this string is too similar to the "mmw" and a bit old-fashioned. I think the lowercase use of the old-fashioned "mmw" font is a quirky use of an old-fashioned font, but the "Creative Group Inc" doesn't have that counterplay to balance this out.

OffbeatDesign v.7

Really like the "Creative Group Inc" font, clean lines, nice and modern, sleek, a balance that offsets the roundness of the lettering.

MMW is way too big in comparison. I like the layering of the MW, but it doesn't work as well with the MM.

The shading across each letter is a little much. There's a lot going on with the MMW, and between the thickness, height, font, shading, width, overlapping, it's just too much.

LutFi V. 10

I like the sensation of MMW cutting into the black rectangle. Very simple, clean, direct, crisp, chic, modern. Like the font of "Creative Group, Inc."

Stacking is well balanced. I like the sharpness of the MMW points.

Curious about whether this would still look good if the MMW portion were shrunk a little against the text string beneath. I do want the MMW to be more prominent, but this could be played with some.

glyphica v. 1

I like the idea of playing with gray, black, and white. I am not sure the colors are used in their best capacity for the graphic.

I like the implication that the initials are wrapping around a globe.

Really like the font of "Creative Group Inc." I like that you played with stacking and broke out "Creative" - you're the only one to do that. :)

While I like that, the ball stacked on top makes things too vertical. So balance has to be played with here, I don't want the logo to be too vertical. I'd rather it be more horizontal than vertical.

glyphica v. 2

Really like the square box to the left, the line, the text to the right. However, the spacing is too spread out - this could definitely be tighter.

Repetition of "MMW" on the right is a bit much.

MMW on the left - don't really like this font.

Again, like the overall play with black, gray, white, but am not sure it is used in the best way here.

Really like the font of "MMW Creative Group, Inc" on the right. Crisp, lean, modern, looks savvy and stylish.

Due to how you stacked things, there's a loss of the comma, which is not grammatically correct. (I'm a writer, grammatically correct is important and publishing will be a division of the company. ;)

giant v. 5

I like the bold, simple design. I like the stacking, I like the bars on top/bottom. But too masculine, feels like it's overcompensating.

Rongen v. 2

Interesting swishes on the lest MW, and I like the font for "Creative Group, Inc." Still very heavy/masculine with the initials.

BlueCherryGraphics v. 1

Very fun, chic, stylish, hip, clean. I like the stacking, and the font for "Creative Group Inc". Comma is missing. While I like the handwritten playfulness of the MMW, and actually think this is a great logo as is, the mood is a little too "casual" - it even implies a sort of sloppiness. This is like someone in a suit jacket with worn jeans that have holes in them. I'd like to go more for a sleek skirt suit with sexy heels. ;)

BlueCherryGraphics v. 2

I stared at this one for quite a while. I think there's a message here I'm just not getting, and I'm feeling a little dumb! why is the W italicized? why the choice of this color, and is this a proofreading mark? a comma? a swish to signify movement? I'm not sure.

The MMW has that typewriter font that is definitely interesting. i like the stacking. I think the initials are way too big in relation to the "creative group, inc." The "Creative Group Inc" font is also a bit stuffy.

I like the clean lines, the shape of the letters, the sense of impact. But I don't think this is a good fit for the brand.

Giant v. 6

I like the playfulness with the "m" forming a 3 point box. However you have to tilt your head to see the "w" and the letters actually all look like E's, rather than Ms and Ws. I like the trio stacking effect - shape, initials, then "creative group, inc." The font here is kind of old-fashioned. Initials feel overemphasized.

Giant v. 7

Very interesting vertical shape! Same comments for the initials and font as v. 6.

For the graphc - a bit too busy again. You see an interesting shape instead of the "MMW" - I really don't want to have to have the "MMW" explained or repeated in order to clarify the shape of the logo, it's just overkill, takes up more space, etc. This particular shape implies paper going through a shredder. It would also probably best be suited to a technology company or a manufacturing/electrical engineering company (National Semiconductor and the like).

Giant v. 8

Very fun! I can definitely see the record company/music production slant here. the M in the middle is neat. The connection between each tail end of the M is neet. I like the stacking of the MMW/Creative Group, Inc. Again, the font's a bit old fashioned there.

This is a slightly skater/punk/edgy kind of thing. I can see this logo on a skull tshirt or spray painted on a sidewalk or on the side of a sneaker, if you know what I mean. The graphic at least, not the text. Which is probably not very suited to my company/brand image as a whole. But this is cool!

Lutfi v. 9b

Thanks for the edit! I like the previous version better. Thanks for humoring me, but I'd rather keep smooth clean lines and this looks less clean with the thickness of the line and the way things are curved.

There might be other ways to play with it, but you know what I mean. I hope. :)

LutFi v. 9c

Better than 9b. Still a little weird, it just really stands out next to the first two Ms and not in a good way.

LutFi v. 10B

I like! Good balance, all the good things from the previous v. 10, could play around with space and stacking a bit, but yeah, looks good.

LutFi v. 10C

An interesting twist! Probably a little too much.

Offbeat v. 8 a

Me Like, well balanced on the left between letters text string. Still kind of long, though.

Offbeat v. 8 b

The mixing of vertical and horizontal reading is going a little too far, but I do like the vertical stacking of the MMW. I see where you're going though.

Offbeat v. 8 C

Really like this. I think honestly it is my favorite formation of this comp. I prefer the all caps to the "Creative Group, Inc" than the initial caps. Like the clean lines, the balance of the blocks.

Offbeat v. 9a

Fonts here clash with one another but I do adore that font for "Creative Group, Inc." Very art deco and delicious.

Offbeat v. 9b

This is a better balance of font. Alas, while I do adore V. 9 as a logo, I think it is too publishing/New York Publishing Company and just leans the brand too far in one direction. But it's an awesome logo and whoever gets it in the future - lucky!

LutFi V. 11

I like the creative play with space, the moving of "Creative Group, Inc" in close to nestle and stack with the MMW. I thin the MMW themselves, especially with this W is just not working out, but thanks for trying this.

In this logo, I really love the balance and merging of MMW/text and am just not feeling what's going on with the W.

LutFi V. 12

Same as v. 11. Thanks for trying to improve upon the W! :)

LutFi V. 12b

This starts moving us into the abstract I feel, moving stuff around and breaking it down too much. The MW at the end are starting to run together and be less distinct, the "Creative Group, Inc" is hanging off a cliff, it's not working, but again, I like that you are playing with space.

glyphica v. 3

As I step back and look at this, the ideas are great, but I think the balance between the objects is still in need of tweaking. Like the globe, like the fonts, like the line, like the left/right, like the stacking, like the "Creative Group Inc" font and yet ... things are feeling very large, spread out, sort of top heavy ...

Al the elements are definitely here, though, this is definitely a great foundation.

glyphica v. 4

The same for me as v. 3, just an imbalance in things that is not working, but definitely a great starting point. I see the tweaks you made but I think it's just spatial balance and relative size for all the pieces that needs to be worked out.

giant v. 9

Heheh, this one made me laugh, I don't know why. Makes me think of mardis gras beads, or barbells, it's definitely fun. I like that you played with shape, and that the MMW curves over the "Creative Group."

Fonts are still kind of old-fashioned and heavy for me.

OKAY EVERYONE!

I am going to take some time to absorb what we've got, but I think I've seen pretty much all there is to see! So thank you for your revisions and hard work!

I plan to take some time to go through my top 3 and settle on a graphic and a designer, and I will announce it by Monday, probably sooner, but I just want to set expectations.

NO need to submit further revisions or new logos! I think I've definitely got some great leads in these two pages already.

Thanks again!

Hello all,

Thank you so much for your awesome work and prompt revisions! Much appreciated.

I have chosen the following design:

Offbeat Design, Logo Version 8C

I also will be posting another design request for other logos in the project forums shortly!

Best,

So for this graphic, overall feedback:

PROS

- Adore the font, the W in particular and the font for the second line of text was a main reason I chose this. Feels very Art Deco, very chic, very edgy and stylish. It gives a sophisticated flair to the "professional" image I am going for.

I have seen in the project guidelines that we may have to purchase fonts, is this required for a logo?

- Really like that you broke up the three boxes to give them each their own space above the second line of text.

- Really like the sleekness, modernity, and almost art deco feel of the second line of text.

ABSOLUTE IMPROVEMENTS

- Please add a period to the end of "INC."

ROOM FOR PLAY

Do you have any other ideas for things you'd like to do with this version? I am definitely open!

I'd also be open to some variations:

- Shrinking the black box space around the MMW, increasing the overall size of the MMW bigger (not thicker, I like the slenderness of the lettering), and increasing the overall size of the "CREATIVE GROUP INC" (again, not making it thicker, since I like the slenderness). Basically my concern is that the MMW blocks are slightly overcompensating against the second line of text, but only slightly.

- Another option is just to make the second line of text bold, so it stands out well beneath the MMW blocks.

- Just to see, could I see the same formation for 8C with the "mmw" lowercase in the same font?

Again, open to other ideas!

thanks offbeat!

ok, so the lowercase looks too casual, so we'll stick with caps.

is version 8 C the same as 10 A but without the period after the INC?

i'm trying to tell the difference. regardless I like it better when the MMW stacks evenly with the second line of text like it does here.

can you confirm there's no difference between the two other than the period? or am i missing something?

if there's no difference other than the period then the final version is 10 A!

but, please confirm.

also, if another of your ideas in this thread is one i'd like to maybe use for something else, what are the rules for pursuing that with you?

thanks,
