Project Summary:<o:p></o:p>
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
1st Priority: Oasis
<o:p> </o:p>
2nd Priority: Oasis Student Ministries (depending on readability and scalability)
<o:p> </o:p>
What type of product or service do you offer?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
We are a high school student ministry that targets students ages 13-18.
<o:p> </o:p>
How long have you been in business?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Oasis Student Ministries is part of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Grace</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Bible</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Church</st1:placetype></st1:place> which has been around for more than fifty years. I have personally been involved as youth pastor for the past 4 years.
<o:p> </o:p>
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.<!--[endif]-->Bring greater awareness of our ministry, events, and activities to a greater number of students in the local schools and community.<o:p></o:p>
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.<!--[endif]-->Build excitement and a healthy group image for our ministry among those currently involved.<o:p></o:p>
<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.<!--[endif]-->Lastly, we are moving into a new high school meeting space soon and would like to reflect this new logo and identity prominently in the room (on wall, etc) and moving forward on all future promotional materials (digital, web, print).<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
What are your long term goals?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
To use our new logo/group identity to help fulfill our vision as a ministry: to enable students to meet Jesus, know Jesus, and serve like Jesus (Matthew 28:19-20).
<o:p> </o:p>
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Dec. 19.
<o:p> </o:p>
Audience Profile:<o:p></o:p>
Please describe your existing audience<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
High school students, ages 13-18. Many from a non-church background. Culturally savvy, tech-savvy, and relationally tight.
<o:p> </o:p>
However, a secondary audience would include parents of students and existing (and future) church members (range between 20-70+).
<o:p> </o:p>
Who would you like to add to your audience?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Additional high school students.
<o:p> </o:p>
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:<o:p></o:p>
What type of logo would you like?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
A logo that communicates our vision (see above). One that is also relevant, contemporary, expresses life, but is clear and simple enough to be transferred and used in the various means we hope to (print, electronic, digital).
<o:p> </o:p>
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
No specific colors at this time. We would like the logo to be designed in such a was so that we could have a more embellished logo (for the web, etc.) as well as a flatter logo (perhaps 2 color – PMS colors) for letterhead/envelopes as well as T-shirts. We would like to keep it simple and easy to transfer to different media/promotional formats.
<o:p> </o:p>
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
I would like to have a number of variations of our logo -
<o:p> </o:p>
--image only (no words or text)
--image w/text
--text only
<o:p> </o:p>
I’m envisioning that based on the usage, one of the above 3 variations would be used, but the identity would still be understood, regardless of which variation is used. (think “MSNBC” logo or “NIKE” logo - each have image and text elements present, but also stand alone on their own merit to identify their brand and image)
<o:p> </o:p>
I like the idea of incorporating the theme of a beach/tree/water theme, but flexible on how that is played out in the actual logo.
<o:p> </o:p>
Examples:
<o:p> </o:p>
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/ (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/) “Vulture” logo - like the curvature and dynamic feeling, also the forward shadow effect - communicates growth, life, getting bigger
<o:p> </o:p>
http://www.crosscurrent.cc (http://www.crosscurrent.cc/)/ “CrossCurrent” logo (on opening flash screen) - like: fluid/rounded, simple color,
<o:p> </o:p>
http://www.oasisoo.com (http://www.oasisoo.com/)/ “Oasis Online Outreach” logo - like: cool font, the letter “O” with palm tree in middle. Also like the footer on front webpage - sunset/trees
<o:p> </o:p>
More variations/examples of this “Oasis” logo:
<o:p> </o:p>
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=197935332&albumId=477562
<o:p> </o:p>
--what I like: Good use of letter “O” with text on top, colors used, fonts used
<o:p> </o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Communication Strategy:<o:p></o:p>
What is your tagline or slogan?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Enabling students to meet Jesus, know Jesus, and serve like Jesus.
<o:p> </o:p>
Where will your new logo be used?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Various promotional materials - including a large wall mural in room, print (primarily letterhead/envelopes – not business cards), web, electronic
<o:p> </o:p>
Competitive Positioning:<o:p></o:p>
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
No real competitors<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>

Giant -

Thanks for the posting and initial feedback. Here are my current thoughts:

Like your "first" Version 1 design over the "second" Version 1. I'm not a big fan of the "boxy" feel that the 2nd one conveys - the clear/transparent background helps it feel more open and fluid. Would like to go more in that direction for the feel but also for end use purposes, no "box" or sharp edges may work better.

I like how you created the arcs/water ripples in the first version design...but wonder what a more wavy/water-like appearance would make it? Also with the addition of a palm tree in middle or side? (something similar to the tree shown in http://www.oasisoo.com/)

What would a second color add to the mix? Looking for a bit more "punch" to the eye when it is seen - a bright accent color or trim?

Thanks for the initial feedback...look forward to seeing how some of these adjustments and enhancements of your own may look -

Hi Giant -

Thanks for the revised designs (and sorry for the delay in responding).

A few thoughts -

--like where you are going with versions 5 and 6...let's keep heading in that direction. The brighter and variety of colors are good. Not sure if I like that combination exactly, but we can keep trying different options.

--like how you inter-jected the water/wave idea in both of these designs, but am concerned about the white lines/spacing between the waves - especially with scalability of logo on smaller documents and promo pieces. Am concerned the waves would 'bleed' together and would appear as one large black (or blue) splotch.

What other variations of the water/wave idea would provide for better scalability? (to follow this thought, the smaller palm trees would provide a similar issue. Maybe stick with just one palm tree?)

--like the oval shaped "O" in version 5 over the circle in version 6. Could you combine the "O" of version 5 into version 6 (with the yellow coloring) and modify how the water/waves are?

Could you also explore a few different font ideas for the word "Oasis"? Will also explore some on my own and suggest some.

To answer your question earlier, the website I referenced is not affiliated with our company/church...just another visual way "oasis" has been represented by another group.

Hi Giant -

Thanks for the great revisions and new ideas. We're making progress, and also giving me some new ideas to explore.

Like the unique style and look of Version 13 - simpler, sleek, fluid, good blend of the letter O into the tree. But the way the "O" swirl currently is, it gives me the connotation of a rattlesnake poising to launch on its prey. Maybe adjust that idea slightly? Like the approach you took on the tree branches in this design as well.

A couple of other thoughts - could you try something like:

Version 8 PMS colors (the wine/burgendy and blue colors) with the design of Version 11, but go a bit 'softer' on the Version 11 waves - may be a bit too pronounced (but I like how they 'flow' over the "O"). Also use the tree and branch design from v13?

Could we also experiment with a few other fonts to see how they would look within the design? Going through my (Mac) font list, a few I like: Cracked, Papyrus, Handwriting - Dakota, or other similar ones.

On a related note, how would these designs look if they were a bit more "weathered"? Don't know how to say that exactly, but not quite as polished or clean as they currently are. The font ideas I mentioned highlight what I am thinking about (cracked, papyrus specifically), but don't know how these would translate to the design and reproducibility of the logo in the future. Could you take a shot at it and see how it goes?

Thanks....appreciate your ideas and design work!

Hi Giant -

Thanks for these revisions. I am planning to meet with a few others on my team tomorrow to review some of these ideas and try to narrow down our options a bit more.

Before I do, could you stretch out the main "O" image in v.14, 15 to be more narrow - like the design in v.17? Also, I like the different font types - any chance the main image could also reflect the look of the font being used? (ie. Papyrus text, Papyrus-like image?) Likewise, in v.15, can the image also convey the 'forward slant' feel that the text font brings out? Don't care too much for the wave pattern in v.15....like the smoother waves shown in v.16, v.18.

Lastly, still not sure about color combinations. Any chance you could draft a few designs of "desert-like" color combinations, as well as trying out a few different shades/hues of what we have already.

Would also like to see other designers/ideas out there that have suggestions and want to submit ideas - please submit!

hi,
in my ver. 19, I already used the look of papyrus on the palm tree, is that what you mean?
Do you want to apply that style into all of the image elements?
Also, I already used the colors of desert in some of my previous designs, which are yellows for dessert,, green for the leaf, and blue

Hi Giant -

sorry for the confusion -

I was curious what a Papyrus-like look through all the image elements would look like, not just the tree. Prefer it be a subtle look, not too strong. I like the changes you reflected in v.20!

Thanks also for the clarification on your color choices!

thanks, Giant - I'm not convinced I like the Papyrus look throughout the full image graphic either.

On v.20 - can you bring out the text color a bit more (more bold/larger) and verify the blue color is the same used in the wave. It has the appearance of being a bit lighter than the wave, but maybe just because the text is thinner. Can you make it larger/more bold?

I'm also hopeful to have a few other options from some other designers before I make my final decision. Please post if you have some. Thanks.

Thanks for these revisions, Giant and verifying the same color for the text as is in the wave. Appreciate it much! The boldness of the text definitely helps for visibility of the letters! A much improved look to this design!

To all -

Before my team and I make a final decision on a design to go with, we would like to preview other ideas and suggestions first. I have extended the project deadline until Jan. 2, 2009, to allow for more entries and a decision to be made.

Although I will not be able to respond as frequently the next 3-4 days (will be in areas with limited internet connections), I will respond to any posts made once I return. Thanks!

thanks for your post, Abby -

A few additional thoughts and ideas:

For Giant:

Wanted to say thanks again for all the effort and thought you've put into the current designs so far. Was wondering if you could experiment with a few other completely different ideas/designs for our name/group? As I meet with my team to evaluate, we'd love to have a few unique designs to choose from to help us compare/contrast them before selecting one. Have found a few other graphical ways Oasis has been represented (see below for links), but please feel free to share any other ideas of your own.

In addition - could you make a few revisions on v.20.2:
--could you move the text from below the graphic to the sides? (2 versions - one on left, one on right) Goal: to see what a more horizontal logo would look like. LOVE the font choice (Papyrus).
--related, what would the logo look like if the O graphic was part of the text? "<O graphic>asis"
--could you also try a few designs with the text not in all caps ("Oasis")?
--could we explore some more color options? Would like to consider the letter "O" as a sandy brown-like color, and have a softer, complementary blue/sea foam color for the waves, and a yellow/orange color for the tree/branches (like you did in v.20.2). Text in the sandy brown color? Goal: to explore some other complimentary color schemes within the design and text.

Thank you very much for all the effort and time you've spent incorporating all these ideas into the designs!

To all:

A few other ideas and design thoughts to spur some additional entries to be considered -

http://www.braintango.net/images/oasis/oasis-logo.jpg
--like how the "i" morphs into the tree/branches - with this idea, could also consider including "Student Ministry" below the main text.

http://oasislocations.com/location_photos/oasis_logo.jpg
--another related idea to the one above...not a big fan of the "fat/bold" lettering....a bit strong and bold, but the creativity with the "i" could be good.

http://www.davebastian.com/files/gimgs/25_oasis.png
--another take on the same idea as above, but with the graphic inside the letter "O". Again, leaves the idea of having "Student Ministry" below the main text.

Thanks all - look forward to seeing your thoughts and ideas -

Hi BlueCherry -

Thanks for the design ideas. Like your approach and thought you took. Specifically, I like the "cracked" feel you bring out with the text and graphics, and also like the font choices you used.

A few revisions and suggestions - could you incorporate the different colored "i" in V.2 (like you did in V.1)? Also, how would v.2 look if it was just a 2 colored logo instead of 3 - maybe the text and tree branches could just be different tones/shades of the same color? Also not a big fan on the "fuzzy hair" coming out of the branches and text in v.2.

What are your thoughts about having "Student Ministry" added below the main text? Too many letters to fit?

On a different note, I ran across this logo a few days ago and liked some of the elements it contains. http://lufkinfirst.com/oasis_logo.jpg Am glad to see some of them incorporated in your ideas!

Thanks -

Hi Jennifer -

Thanks for these revisions. I showed these newest ideas to some of my team today and received some favorable feedback and responses from them.

As an alternative to what you've posted, could you show us a version (similar to v.3 and v.5) without the sun image included?

Also, from a visual standpoint, the "i" and second "s" appear to be larger than the other letters. True or just perceived? I like how you've staggered the lettering and size of them, but could you reduce the size of the "i" and "s" down a bit so it blends better with the other text? Or maybe it's just my perception of how those 2 letters look beside the others?

What other font options could we consider for the "student ministry" text? Is there one that would be similar to the font used for "oasis" (but without the cracked/scratch mark feel?)

Thanks - I'm excited to see how these changes look!

Jennifer -

re: v.6 - like your revisions and choice of font for "Student Ministry". Could you resize the branches a bit so they are more relative to the size of the text (specifically to the "i" that they are coming "out" of). Could they also have a bit smoother edging to more closely align with the text font? Really like your color choices and placement of "Student Ministry" at the bottom.

Tini1 - like your concept (image + text in a horizontal idea), but not sure if the font and/or color schemes are working for me yet. Can you give me some other options to look at?

Paula23 - v1&2: text and graphics look a bit too "chunky" to me.... could you thin them out or stretch them a bit? I like the palm tree branches and how you have it all "framed" in the "O" (v1). any chance we could keep v1 to 2 colors?

Paula23 - like version 3 much better than v.1 or 2. Thanks for making those adjustments. could you post an option with the "Student Ministry" (or "Student Ministries") text at/near the bottom to see what that would look like? Don't know if directly below the "Oasis" or below the "O" frame would look better?

Jennifer - like how you smoothed out the leaves in v.7 and 8, but they still feel too big and over-powering on the whole logo. Out of curiosity, what would a different style palm branch look like over the "i"? (something similar to Paula23's design?)

Also, like the solid color look of the "Student Ministry" text of v.6 over the 'scratched' look in v.7 - the latter becomes a bit unclear and hard to read, especially since it is a smaller size. The cross addition in v.8 doesn't appeal to me too well.

To all: I've appreciated your ideas and designs....I really like what you have shown me recently and will show these to my team today/tomorrow and let you know my final choice tomorrow. Thanks!

Paula23 - thanks for the quick reply. Like your text placement and font in both versions, but not a fan of the colors in v5. Looking for more soft and warm tones (similar to previous designs and ideas) - greens, blues, etc. Also would like to stay with the length of "i" from v3, not how you extended it in v5.

Hi Jennifer -

Awesome....am excited to finalize this design and see it used in our group.

A few revisions I and my team would be interested in seeing:

1. Change the text from "Student Ministry" to "Student Ministries"

2. Incorporate some light scratching into the "Student Ministries" text, similar to what you did in v.8 but not as much as in v.7. I want to make that text visible and clear, but have the scratching feel consistent throughout the entire logo, like you've done in the tree branches and oasis text.

3. Could we soften the green color a bit? Maybe make it a bit more pastel-like?

4. Want to still play around with the look of the palm trees. They still seem a bit too big and overbearing. Could we try a different look to the leaves - something similar to what Paula23 had on her proposed designs? If that doesn't work, maybe scaling the current leaves down would help a bit.

Thanks for these changes!

Hello,

I missed your requests.

I have some other revisions to do tonight as well, so I will post yours then.

I can't copy another designer's elements, but I can certainly come up with something similar to that style for you to take a look at.

Thanks!

Thanks, Jennifer! I realize you're doing a lot of other work as well, so am grateful for the time you can spend on ours. Regarding the branches/leaves, anything similar for us to take a look at would be great -

Thanks again!

Hi,

Just wanted to know if you need further revisions. Not sure if you saw the latest one I posted on the 13th.

Hi Jennifer -

Thanks for the revisions post. Sorry for the delay in responding.
Like the revisions to the wording, "scratching", and specifically to the palm leaves. Have shown this to part of my team and they are in agreement, but will be meeting with the rest of my team on Sunday to get their feedback and will let you know the final outcome.
