Project Summary:

What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

Vici Project

It's important that the part "Vici" should be usable for inclusion in derived logos, because there wil be a lot of "spinoff" sub-projects that will have "Vici" in the name.

What type of product or service do you offer?

The "Vici Project" is an open source software development project consisting of several sub-projects, which will all have a name starting with "vici".

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

No hard deadline, but December 15th would be nice.

Audience Profile:

Please describe your existing audience

Software development companies and individuals

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:

What type of logo would you like?

"Vici" means "I conquered" in Latin. Although not a requirment, it would be nice if there was some reference to the word or the era where it came from (the Romans). The logo should not be too fancy (no detailed drawings). The audience should be kept in mind (software developers)

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

Not really, but the logo should be usable on dark and light backgrounds (although its primary use will be on a light backgground). The number of colors is unlimited, because it will mostly be used for web display (which also implies that gradients or other tricks are allowed)

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

Not really.

Communication Strategy:

What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

Quality and innovation

Where will your new logo be used?

Mainly website

Competitive Positioning:

Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

The "Castle Project" is a similar project: http://www.castleproject.org. Their logo is not that bad, but it sends a message of not being "up-to-date".

Two designs look promising: graphxguy and tini1 (v2).

I would like to see some variations on them.

For the logo from graphxguy, I would like to see some variations in the text/font. The icon itself is neat.

Concerning tini1's second design: please provide some different colors, and maybe do something about the font, because the "v" in vici looks like a "u".

Thanks for the great first efforts.

@tini1: Although the "v" now looks like a "v", I liked the original font better. The only problem with that font was that the "v" looked like a "u". Isn't there a font that looks similar to the original one, but without the "v"-"u" ambiguity?

Regarding color: I really like the green one, although the contrast between the green and the dark grey is not very good.

:)I will post some variiations tomorrow(I can recreate the 'v')...here is the orig. font, w/green:)

@bogglins: that's not really what I'm looking for. Way too much detail in the logo.

@giant: your last designs are interesting, but somehow there's something wrong with it, although I don't know what. Maybe the text part?

@tini1: don't worry about the "v" for now. It's pretty easy to fix that later. Can you go back to your V2 design and create some color variations? I really like the 2 color shades you've used in V2 (as opposed to the grey/black you introduced in V3B and V4). Can you create orange and green versions of V2?

What I really like about tini1's design is the simplicity and the recognizable "V" in the logo. It also represent the project very well, because "the vici project" will be a collection of sub-projects (building blocks).

One question though: this logo seems familiar to me, as if I've seen it before. (or maybe that's the effect you get when you see a great logo for the first time :) )

simple

:)here are the color variations.....
(the logo is based on a square shape/button, elements(rectangles) used to form a shape....which is a common way to build a logo, but the arrangement to for the 'v' is unique....maybe that is why it seems familiar?:))

Time to switch to the final shortlist:

- tini1
- graphxguy

tini1

Design 5B looks best so far, although there's still something missing, but I don't know what.

graphxguy

I like the "V" logo, but the text still looks like it doesn't fit. Can you work on that?

To all the others: thanks for your submissions. Better luck next time (there will be more opportunities, because there's more to come from me)

One more font try.....looking back at the original specs, I thought a type face with a more "Roman" feel might work.....

Thanks.

You are both making it very hard for me to decide. Let me think about it for a bit.

Feel free to post more variations if you feel the urge :)

After a lot of thought and discussion with other people involved in the project, I finally decided...

And the winner is... graphxguy. I will need some small changes though (based on version 4 of the logo).

Thanks to all the other designers for their time and effort. There's another logo project coming up, so watch this space!

grapxguy,

Can you make the font a little "fatter" (bold)? Maybe change the color of the word "Vici" or "Project", so the color of the two words differ.

Could you also add a little more "depth" to the graphical part of the logo?

-Philippe

Yes, I will work on those revisions tonight.

Thanks.

Here are the requested revisions.

As for the text color, I have a concern that adding color to the text takes away from the impact of the icon. With the orange, the eye could have a tendency to notice the color in the text more than the icon. Additionally, the all black text against the orange hues of the icon create a nice contrasting relationship, with both elements carrying the same weight, giving a balanced feel to the whole logo.

Thanks.

Stephen

You have a point about the font colors, although I think the grey/black doesn't look too bad.

I like what you did with the icon. This is pretty much what I expected, so we can finish this project here. Thanks a lot for your great work!

Can you send me the files?

Do you want the font in all black?

It doesn't matter. I have the tools needed to change small things like that myself. So, all black is fine.
