Hi, Here is the second of two logo contests I am kicking off. Again, I am not coming to the table with a lot of ideas about how it should look - I am open to the designers' ideas and I will try to be prompt about answering questions and providing feedback. -- Scott

CONTEST: Business Entity/Unit Logo
PRIZE: $100
DEADLINE: 12/1/03

NAME: HealthEdge Software (note: "edge" means "advantage" in this context)

INDUSTRY: Producer of diet, nutrition and exercise related software for end-users in North America, the U.K. and Australia.

MARKET: Current or potential business associates, e.g. banks, service providers, channel partners.

KEY IDEAS/PSYCHOLOGY:
- Professional, but not conservative
- Modern and Flexible, but not "hipster"

USAGE: Letterhead, Business Cards, MS Office documents, WWW site branding

DESIGN GUIDELINES: Limit to 2 or 3 standard PMS colors plus white and be aware of precision registration requirements to keep printing costs reasonable. The predominate use of this logo will be for business documents, so a vector format is preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFO: The "LowCarb Edge" product described in another contest is an example of one of our products.

A couple of very impressive entries, Bill and Anthony! My feedback below:

Bill: I love the the way the two colors and negative space are used. It forms a good tight impression. I think I prefer the design on the top, because it flows cleanly from left to right. The movement is not bound, if that makes any sense. The image in the bottom design has a certain something, but kind of partitions the space. There is no path for the eye to follow from left to right or top to bottom. One of the differences I see between the two is how much image-to-background and/or negative space-to-color there is. The bottom design resolves into a figure much more easily than does the design on the top. Maybe you should play with this ratio. I like the way the two colors are used in the business unit name. The fonts seem good for now, professional with a hint of femininity.

Anthony: I like the font you used here, a lot of movement and energy. I don't think we're "barking up the right tree" here, though, on the design. There are two things: the design and the gestalt. The gestalt first ... the figure says more like "Fitness" to me than "Health". With the design, there are two things: the colors and the combination of elements. The colors should be richer. More importantly, the combination of elements is disturbing and I'll try to explain why (forgive me if I don't make sense). You have two bounding elements, a rectangle and a circle. Each of these and certainly both of them together bind the space so that the eye cannot travel through the design. The use of the name "health edge" that breaks through these bounding elements does take the eye from left to right, however, the running figure is perpendicular and blocks that movement. I hope that helps, not being a designer, it's hard to know what will help.

Thank you both very much! I look forward to evolutions of these designs, as well as fresh ideas that explore other approaches. -- Scott

Thanks Just_G!

A couple of things that I really like about your design are the colors and the evocative shape. However, we need to add "Software" in there somehow, combine the words to "HealthEdge" and lose the ® as the trademark is not registered. Can you try moving the shape to the left of the combined word HealthEdge and placing "Software" beneath? Kind of like the attached? -- Scott

Very cool, guys! B)

Jon: the seal-like graphic image with the body-builders is a great idea, very edgy. I like the style. The figures used are a little "busy" though, besides being "fitness" rather than "health". The mix of serif and sans-serif fonts and colors aren't working.

Stephen: I love the balance in this design - particularly the text elements. Very nice. I'm not relating to the graphic, though. From one perspective, it looks like a person leaping. From another perspective is looks like Arabic language. Also, I don't think the third color is really adding much. If you have time, I urge you to try an evolution of this design with a different graphic element to balance the text.

Mark: Very clean, very elegant. Just what we asked for: professional, but not stuffy; modern, but not hip. The favorite so far of both myself and my partner. A lot of potential for stylization with the "mouse cord" element. If you like, I urge you to play with that aspect a little.

Just_G: I am looking forward to an evolution of your design. Tightened up a little, it could be just the ticket.

Bill: I think we will be going with something more along the lines of submissions by Stephen, Mark and Just_G. Please do me a favor and push your submissions to this contest over to my other contest for a logo for a web application. I really like them and think that they would fit better in that use.

Thanks so much to everyone! Please take a look at my other logo contest and let me know if I can provide any better information to get you started on that one.

Thanks for you comments. Below is a revision with different colors. I won't explain the mark since I want to see if it speaks to you what I was trying to convey.

Awaiting your input..........

Hi all,

My (proverbial) hat is off to each and every one of you. The work you are doing is wonderful. Would it be appropriate for me to call the contest early and declare a winner? I don't believe we will find a design that suits better than Mark's initial submission (attached).

On the other hand, the submissions for my other logo contest - for the LowCarb Edge web site/application - still have a ways to go. And the time is half over! I will be posting feedback in that thread shortly.

Thanks so much for all your efforts! -- Scott

If it is permissible to call the contest early and doesn't break any conventions, then yes, I am. -- Scott

Well seeing that Anthony has just posted a new one, some of the other designers might have some more ideas coming. Let's give them 24 hours and then you make the call. Does that sound fair?

That can start to be really interesting. But the only think I know is that mark had a geniusly insight. ;) That would be tough...

Again, thanks to everyone! This was my first experience working with designers in this kind of venue and I've got to say, not only was it a helluva lot of fun, you folks deliver great work!

Mark takes the prize on this one with his initial entry (attached below). His design expresses just the feeling of professionalism and sophistication that I was hoping for. Thank you!
