It's good to be back!
Three years ago Sarah James designed a wonderful logo for me, but now I need it updated.
I don't have a deadline, but puppy season usually starts 12/26! Oops!
As soon as this is done, I will also need a new trifold (mainly for vets, groomers and shelters) and business cards.
My website is SmartDawgs.com (http://www.smartdawgs.com); I'm a dog trainer in the L.A. area that's been in business for 8 years.
To get started, I’ve sent a great picture of a dog waving and my current logo. Just to be clear, the only changes to the dog are the paws (below). Please do not change that adorable face!
Here's a list of the changes I'd like to see:
Drop the .com
Heavier font (maybe with Smart Dawgs on two lines/levels?) in a med to dark red
Font s/b simple and feminine, but not overly so. I like letters that match – m’s, w’s, and a’s, should be from the same family.
Dog s/b behind the text, one paw on the text (or on the ground), the other waving rather than dangling the mortar board. I don’t think it matters which paw is doing what.
I would love for the dog to be in a spotlight. I’ll send some of my current stuff so you can see what I’ve been using (and why I need you’re help!) I’m clearly a dog trainer; not an artist! :P
Thanks everybody - my last experience was wonderful and I'm sure this one will be too!

Do you have the EPS or AI file of your logo?

Sorry, this is all I have. I was originally sent several different files but this was the only one I could open.

Hi, Could you try to upload any other file you have with extension .ai or .eps Thanks.

Hi, Could you try to upload any other file you have with extension .ai or .eps Thanks.
Since I wasn't able to view any other files, I copied everything onto a disk and when to a printer - he wasn't able to use any of the formats since none of them were vector files (I didn't even know what that meant at the time). This is all I have.

Jennifer –
Thanks for the entry! The top half looks great, but I would like to see the whole dog with his paw raised and resting on the letters. This is why I thought about two lines for Smart Dawgs – so the dog doesn’t overpower the name. For the font, I’m looking for something bold but not heavy that has continuity – Century Gothic is what I’ve been using but it’s too plain and thin. Not sure if it will reproduce here, but notice the M, W and A are all the same: SMART DAWGS That’s the general idea.
I love the intensity of your outline – he was always a little too weak and looked like he was stuck in as an afterthought.
The words private in-home dog training shouldn’t be there; my mistake - I add them for certain things but not everything.
I’d also like to see that spotlight….

Hello -
Here is a design from me. :)

Orangemonkey:
Thanks for joining in! I love the paw but now I think it might look better as a right paw with the left elbow leaning on a letter as it originally was.
I also like the words split, but can I see them off-set a little without the .com
This font is a little heavy and still boring, but thank you for finding one with matching letters! I don’t know why that’s important to me, but it is.
The color for the font s/b medium to dark red, as on my web site, and the dog needs to be much more real-dog tan.
And don’t forget the spotlight…maybe it won’t work, but I would love to see what a few creative minds can come up with!

Thank you for all your feedback.
Here is a different design with the left paw raised, red type, a more tan color on the dogs spots and some rays in the background. :)

Oops, I said he would look better with his right paw raised because of the way his whole body is leaning. Turning him this way means the left paw s/b raised! And he's still not leaning on the letters.
The colors are much better, but the font is still heavy and "standard."
The rays and stars are interesting, but not what I'm looking for.

Thanks Deanna; you're on the right track!
I love the spotlight. You're the first one to try and you've nailed it - but now I realize that it needs to be in white on a colored background. Sorry
I'm very happy with this font and your red. Not sure if the words s/b in two colors and I'd like the word Dawgs to be larger - he can be behind it and it can share the spotlight.
Your dog is great from the waist up - and his elbow fits perfectly on the "S" - but the lower half just doesn't work.
Now I'm getting excited!
Project Update: The project deadline has been extended to Jan 26th.
Designers Please get your new and revised concepts in with in the next 24 hrs, Thank you.

To simplify things, here are some dog pics that might help fill in the areas missing once a paw is raised.
Forget the spotlight...
I just want to see the dog resting on the words the same way he was resting on the .com before.
Thanks!

Leaning on letters :)

01-21-2009, 05:24 PM
You're getting real close! I do want him behind the text and leaning on it as in the original, so if the words need to be on the same level then so be it. Great effort!

01-21-2009, 06:27 PM
Thank you, here is a version with the type all on one level and one still stacked. :)

I changed the type color to separate the words better :)
Patience5392
01-21-2009, 07:08 PM
The one level does work better and I love the reds.
Again, you're real close but what I need to see - and I guess I'm not being clear cause everyone is missing it - is the original dog (sorry I never rec'd a vector file and re-drawing it seems to be a problem) with the blank parts filled in once he's moved over and a paw is raised.
Please pay extra attention to his face - the jpeg file makes it fuzzy, but it helps the oddly shaped nose (looks shiny!) and the line under his mouth (looks like a slight beard).
Thanks again!

Paula - I love the way you've sized the letters in version 2 and the font is great, except for that G. ??
The dog needs to be closer to the original - especially his face.
Overall, great work!

Thanks for the feedback:)
Here is the logo with a revised dog and another "G"
Hopefully the dog is a match of your original logo.
Let me know if this is what you had in mind.
Thanks, Paula

This is what friends are for – even though every designer has done a great job, and I thank all of you, I’ve lost sight of my original goal so I’m not providing proper feedback.
My dog needs to remain serious; not a cartoon
With my incredibly limited software, I’ve redrawn the dog as I want him. The text needs to go over him as shown (all in red), but not wiping him out in the process (I can’t do that).
Add a waving arm and we’re done! I’m going to give this 24 hours so everyone that’s been working can have one final shot before I choose.
Thanks again for all of your efforts – the trifolds and business cards are next!

Hi Paula! I talked with a few friends and they put me back on track. I just need the dog that I drew - as I drew him - in vector format with a waving arm added and the words in front of him as my layout has it.
Your drawings were the best, so I'm asking you do make this change.
Thanks for your help!

Hi:)
Here are the revisions.
In the samples you provided the image you drew and the version
shown with the text you like are a little different.
I traced directly over the top of your sketch and thought I should
show you both dogs a.b & c,d for comparison.
I also thought I'd show you the text in one and 2 colors for each dog.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks, Paula

You've got a great eye - I squished him! I like D the best! This is exactly what I want - but the raised paw needs to be higher, and the arm a little longer and heavier, like the one he's leaning on. The original message I sent has a terrier in the perfect position.
Thanks Paula!

Better? :)

Sooo close! The paw should be just less than 1/3 of the total arm and can you make DAWGS a little bigger than SMART? Maybe the bottom of the letters at his crotch? I think this should do it!

No problem, just to be clear are you referring the the paw being less than 1/3 in reference to the whole length of the arm or just the extended part?
Thanks!

Three paws should fit between the elbow and the tip of the paw

Hi,
The paw on the last design was adjusted (a bit smaller)
I've attached that same design with the grid I used to divide the forearm into 3.
Do you think the paw should be larger or smaller?
We'll get this figured out:)
Thanks!
Patience5392

Wow - we're both doing the same thing ??? Let's squish it more and be done with this!
Thanks for being so patient with me!

Here are a couple of variations
I stretched (widened) it a little in the top design and squished (narrowed) it in the second:)
