Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?

Sabra Jane

What type of product or service do you offer?

No product, actually. Just an informational website with discussion forums.

The website will be a community website with informational articles on options in childbirth including: homebirth, midwife services, doula services, unassisted childbirth, natural unmedicated hospital birth. There will also be areas for sharing birth stories, and seeking support.

How long have you been in business?

n/a this is a new project.

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?

I will be designing my website around the logo and launching the community.

What are your long term goals?

Building a safe community for women making choices that aren't mainstream to meet, find information and support.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?

January 16th -- can be extended if needed.

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience

This is a new project, so no existing audience yet. But obviously the website will appeal to mothers and mothers to be seeking to make informed choices about the way they give birth.

Who would you like to add to your audience?

I would like the website to appeal to a wide variety of women, not just the stereotypical "hippy" or "granola-crunchy" type. Many websites in the alternative childbirth genre feature fairies, goddess figures, and tie-dye. I'd like to stay away from that stereotype.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?

The domain name sabrajane.com has been chosen in memory of a grandmother of mine who was a midwife for many years. As the name itself is not birth / baby specific, it will allow me to umbrella a wide variety of natural parenting topics at the website. I don't necessarily want a logo that is "in your face" obvious like a baby in the womb or a profile of a pregnant body with a baby in it... that's been done a million times over.

I'd like something fresh and modern, colors that pop. Something that more symbolizes new beginnings, new life, birth, and freedom rather than being blatantly "childbirth". I don't want to limit creativity but I picture maybe blossoms on a tree, seeds blowing from a dandelion gone to seed, a little sprout just beginning to grow... though all that said if someone can incorporate a baby / mama into a logo tastefully without it feeling tired/overdone, I'm interested in seeing it.

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)

I'd like the website to be fresh and bright, colors that pop. Modern aquas, oranges, reds, greens, blues (and more) just please, please stay away from the very typical "baby blue" and "baby pink". I am not interested in baby/nursery pastels! And please no purples, so many childbirth websites seem to be purple.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?

No, I'm open. I hope that doesn't make the project too vague.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?

Choice, freedom, new beginnings, birth. I would like the look and feel to be appealing to all walks of life. Women who chose alternative birth settings (outside of a hospital or birthing center) are not all tree-hugging hippies. Not that hippies or hugging trees is bad ;), I would just like the feel of the logo and website to appeal to many women who don't feel comfortable in the "crunchy" category.

What is your tagline or slogan?

n/a

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?

That they have choices when it comes to childbirth, and the right to make informed decisions.

Where will your new logo be used?

On our website. Possibly later on business cards and promotional items.

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

There isn't really anything out there like this -- most websites that contain information about alternative childbirthing options are quite outdated (early 90s style graphics). Many midwife and doula websites use logos that feature a pregnant woman, a pregnant woman with baby in belly, a woman holding a baby, hands holding a baby, a pregnant belly with a heart, a flower with a baby's head coming out the middle, and some are more graphic showing a woman squatting with a baby's head coming out.

I am not interested in these overdone (and often a tad tacky) logos.

List competitive URLs if possible

Hmm, not really competitive, as it's a community rather than a bunch of competing businesses but here are a few that offer some similar content:

birthjunkie.com
unassistedchildbirth.com
childbirth.org
gentlebirth.org
midwiferytoday.com

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Erm... it's not really competitive ;) But I would like a more polished and modern look than most of the websites in the genre have.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:

Freedom to make informed decisions.

I should add, there are a few symbols/images that are off limits for a natural parenting / childbirth type site like the one we're building. Absolutely NO: baby bottles, strollers/prams, storks, bassinets, or pacifiers. And I'm not too fond of teddy bears. ;)

Here are some logo and image samples that caught my eye, as well as just some color combos I liked.

The two trees in the top left hand corner appear to have very similar trunk shapes, which I wouldn't want -- I would want our logo to be unique. But I do like the flowing arty style, and of course the fall feeling of the second one wouldn't be appropriate, as we need something springish/blossomish to represent new life.

The three dandelion seed images are from another thread here for Chasing Bliss. I kind of like this subtle nod to planting a new seed, though it can't be too literal and make everyone think of sperm ;o)

I liked the colors/shapes of the giraffes, though I'm not necessarily sure an animal image would work for the logo. Though the mother/child giraffes of the urthchild logo is kind of cute without being overly sweet.

The baby footprints on the Baby World Standard is also from another thread here. In the genre we're working in, baby feet can be overdone, but I thought that image was pretty classy and well done, though the colors are too muted for me.

As far as symbolizing new life, I kind of liked the bird / egg concept... The other images in this graphic are me trying to get some color samples I liked. I think the swirly plaques and the circles with the brown bird are a tad more muted than I'd like, I liked the more bright colors in the Christmasy image in the center top. The red, yellows, teals, pinks, and greens feel bright and fresh.

I hope that helps a bit! Again, even though there are a lot of trees going on, I'm not married to the idea of a tree. Really looking forward to seeing what y'all come up with!

Oh, as far as fonts go, I'm not opposed to swirly girly, as it is a women-directed website, but I don't want the logo to look too fussy. My favorite font in the world is the ubiquitous Georgia, actually -- though it absolutely does not have to be used.

Thank you! I'm thinking the egg idea is looking to Easter-eggish, let's nix that.

Here's some more specific feedback after talking with focus group.

Some love the eggs, so I think I'm still open to that.

glyphica -- we love the font. I think the colorway is a little too pastel / girly though.

offbeat -- I love the colors of the eggs! And the mama and baby bird is probably my favorite so far.

Would love to see some tree concepts.

Thanks all!

Oh thank you, sorry for the delay, I thought I was in labor (lots of convincing contractions)! 3 days past due with my fourth baby ;o) But no go, still quite pregnant. Okay, let me run these new ones past my focus group and I'll be back with feedback, thanks!

OffbeatDesign -- can I see the mama and baby bird logo with a different font? Sans-serif, with "sabra" one color and "jane" another color?

Glyphica -- one of my partners really liked version #2 with the belly, but I'm thinking it's a little too literal for me. I really like the hearts tree in version #3, can I see that with leaves and blossoms? Really like that font.

Orangemonkey -- folks in the focus group liked this one a lot, but I'm not sure. I like the branches and the nest. Can I see a different font? I don't know if I like the "jane" higher than the "sabra".

Snickerdoodle Studios -- I'm interested, but I'm not sure what I think yet. I do not like that font, and I think the colors in both versions are a little too muted. I want to stay away from a pastel vibe, the second version is definitely too much of the typical baby pink / baby blue feel. Can I see this with a different font and some more vibrant colors?

Thank you everyone, this is very exciting!

Thank you! I had my baby on the 13th, so I'm a little slower to respond...

glyphica -- I really like that, can I see more leaves and maybe some little blossoms instead of hearts?

orangemonkey -- hum. Still not my favorite though I've got two pulling for it on my focus group.

offbeatdesign -- thank you! will it work with a lowercase "s" and "j"?

Thanks all, hope to make a decision soon so I can lay around with this baby ;o)

This new baby has thrown a minor wrench into my schedule (a really cute wrench, ha!) -- can we extend the deadline to January 30th? I think we're closer to a decision than that, but I want to be sure to give myself enough time.

orangemonkey -- could I see yours without the scroll border? Just the nest/branch/bird with the sabrajane in a sans-serif font that has the round "a"?

glyphica -- I'd still love to see the tree with flowers/blossoms in place of the heart.

Thank you offbeatdesigns for the lower case, I like that.

---

If anyone is interested I would like to see a more literal logo with maybe the baby footprint concept.

Thanks so much!
Jessica

Oh thank you!

orangemonkey -- can I see it with the branches moved down just a bit so the nest looks perched on the branches rather than floating in front of it?

glyphica -- I like both of these, I miss the colors of all the hearts though, can the blossoms be multi-colored like the hearts were?

This was such a difficult decision for me! I was paralyzed with indecision for weeks --- there are so many of these I really like and felt very torn.

We've finally decided on Glyphica's Version #4 design. Thank you everyone who participated... I wish I could afford to buy a few more to use on other projects!

No, love it just as is! Can the graphic be delivered in an editable layers format? AI or PSD? Just in case I want to move anything around myself later?

Thanks!
