Hello folks

I thought that title might get some eyebrows to raise:)

There is a festival ( called Aset Luminous or Nit's Festival of Lights) in my tradition based on the Ancient Egyptian one where folks would go down to a slow moving body of water, light candles and place them into the water on papyrus leave boats.

As a leader of a temple with lots of members arpound the world I would love us to have a symbolic virtual way of celebrating the festival and similar ones

So what I would like is:

an interactive flash animated web page very similiar to:

http://www.webshots.com/sp/peace_candle/

I would want basically the same thing..
ability to light a candle that then floats out while sunsets..

but would want water more like the river nile and sun and sky colors more
like the flash at
my site here:

SekhemCollege (http://www.sekhemcollege.com)

(or feel free to be more creative I just wanted to give you something to go on)

But same idea and functionality as peace candle one

That someone coming to the page withthe animation can light and candle and send it down the river as the sunsets!

Best

Renee

May we include other ancient Egyptian imagery?
I mean besides the Nile and the candles?

rlevant

Hi Cre EIGHT Or :)

Wow Sure. One thing...we would not want the historical popular stuff so much as religious stuff

Let me be clearer

Terrific: Aset (greek Isis) Nit or other deities, Ma'at
temple , symbols like eye of heru, scarabs, tyet, lotus,,barq of ra, ankh etc

Awful: Cleopatra, Spinx, Tut, Pharoh statues, Akhenhaton's sun disk(the deformed looking pharoh guy )

I would be happy to provide correct egyptian romanizations if you wanted words or if you wanted correct transliterations or hieroglyphs heh..

Also not necessary to include more than nature (although you just gave me a few ideas now my mind is going lol)

Really will be used in a prayerful context and I am sure viewed by egypt nuts ..so please only use hieroglyphic text if you know the meaning or check with me :)

Thankx
Renee

Forgive me, unfortunately, I am only familiar with the Greek names, but how do you feel about: Anubis, Sekhmet, Sobek, Horus or Hathor?

rlevant
11-10-2003, 05:24 PM
How do I feel about them?

Or about them in the design

**grin*

I am teasing you there

The answer on both is we would love em

Our temple is especially attached to Sekhmet, Wepwawet (Looks like your Anubis same jackal just ..emm he is opner of ways..less dog like more jackel like ;-))
), Heru ( your, Horus), Djehuty(your Thot)

as well as Aset (Isis)
and of course we love them all since they are all one anyway ;-)

The festival of lighting the candles on the river was most strongly conected to Isis (Aset for me) and secondly to Nit/Nebethet(Nephytis for you) so if there will be deities She (Isis/Aset) needs to be there

Osiris (Wesir for me) Hathor (Hethert for me) Amon not sure is the Greek is different heh and Ptah are all inportant

I'll get working on something soon.

This is a little off-topic... but doesn't the weighing of the heart have something to do with the feather of ma'at. the heart is weighed agaist the feather to determine (something)...
Where the soul goes? How the soul is reagarded?... I can't remember.

Anyways... I'll try to get soething posted soon.

rlevant
11-10-2003, 06:06 PM
Were you really a puppy?

heh..well yes the idea is that everything we do in life instantly affects ...everything and everyone else....

Ma'at is when everythig is the way it should be , the way life was created.

To continue in life the "balance" of ones actions/intentions need to be lighter than the feather of Ma'at :)

Glad someone is biting on this ..I was worried it might be too different from the normal stuff:)

Thanx

Hi Just a quick note:

Be sure if their are deities they are not white with blond hair :)

All are Africans though their skin colors can vary --

Wesir(Osiris) and Aset (Isis) shoud be especially darker skinned

Given political sensitivities here ...we are careful to portray the Egyptian Deities as African..but also to come in various shades (as, after all, African and contemporary Middle easterners do today)

This way we avoid the racists who deny Ancient Egytians were African
And the Afro-centrists..who can sometimes assume all Africans were dark black skinned and only modern folks who are black should have any interest in them :)

Best

Ugh I didn't even think of this till a moment ago LOL *phew*

Don't you worry... I couldn't think of a white/blond Egyptian deity to begin with...
When I think of ancient Egypt, I automatically think of "Nubian" dark, tanned, exotic, gold and plaited hair...

Hello Renee,
I'm still here... just a quick question:

How would you write LOADING in heiroglyphs?

I'll most likely have to have a pre-loader for this animation, and I'd like to have the word "Loading" in heiroglyphs rather than the English spelling... if it's possible.

Another question would be: Are ancient Egyptian heiroglyphs read left to right? or right to left, as in Arabic?

Another is: If the symbols for the word "loading" are arranged over 2 or more lines, could you possibly show the order in which they are read?

For example: baja bird --> feather --> ankh --> scarab --> bier
(I hope in my ignorance I didn't say anything bad ;) )

Oh yeah... I'm also working on the first portion (the illustrative portion) of your other contest. The ancient Egyptian theme is right up my alley... in that I am overly enamoured with ancient Egyptian art. :)

ROTFLMAO

I cannot say I know that one off hand!

Heh

I will get back to you on that

Another idea awould be to have a more ..term that would be related to the prayers for this festival......but I won't write if off till I see what your up to:)

I will go figure out what sort of expression would have the meaning intended here and post it

Too Funny

I'm glad your working on both very cool:)

Each year we will add more virtual festival shrines....eventually we can have the full year in online festivals!

Hi there

Direction of the heiroglyphic writing

The short answer: Either

This is typically the answer to most yes or no questions about Ancient egypt:)

However they are usually written from right to left.

What matters is the direction the glyphs face.

For example...Take a look at the first two lines of glyphs on the following page:

Egyptian Language (http://trueofvoice.com/content/rr.htm)

The first line has the glyphs facing the right

It is red from right to leftt.

The second more colorful line has the same glyphs facing left.

It is read from left to right.

(And I won't even mention that one CAN do up and down as well !)

Best

Renee

cre8or
11-12-2003, 07:34 PM
That is very cool to know. I've often wondered why some are facing one way and some are facing another, but not in the same bit of writing.

Another Egyptian question:
Are cartouches reserved only for important people, phrases, things, pharoahs, or gods?

Back to business:
Do you have a deadline in mind?

rlevant
11-12-2003, 09:47 PM
Hi Kimber

I am not sure what is appropriate.

especially with the other contest running...

What would you (or any of yeah lurkers here) suggest?

I am SO Not an artist ..that what will leave enough time is something I could mis by 4 years in either direction! (or even up and down like in Ancient Egypt )

Let's try a deadline of November 22..

When is your ritual date?

rlevant
11-14-2003, 11:48 AM
Hi!

The main festivals are passed:)
Aset Luminous is the end of June
Lights of Nit around 3rd week of September

I'd love to have it for our HebSed Festival bu that might be too soon
although we do sometimes celebrate a few days after an actual date:)
Heb Sed is the 28th this year

And I am flexible..we can always launch ot instead for teh Flame Festival in Mid December

In other words...Consider what you need. I can work around it.

Like I said..this is a bit outside the norm here..and I am so greatful you guys are willing to play:)

Very Very cool.

PLus You just made me WIN a FREE DINNER OUT!

I made a bet that we would not see much on the illustration this weekend but that by 10:30 Sunday night you would have a part of the flash posted hahaha

How did I guess? B) :D

I have not consulted any of the crew yet

The only two things I am wondering and maybe a third (not sure I like my third idea)

1. If there could be more a sense of evening (You may have the winged sun going down in the movie for instance and or darker sky before candles comes out

2. Since we will also use it for Festival of Nit..if we can put Nit in there as well as Aset it would be neat

Love the colors, and the winged disk looks terrific and I love that it is so different from the style of the other stuff you did for the temple :)

Can't wait till Rev Sedgwick is out of her meeting so I can rub in winning the bet B) ...I mean so she can see yet another awesome illustration

Okay, I've got a little bit more goin' on now.
Please excuse the choppy load (If you're on dial-up)
I haven't made the pre-loader yet.

SEE SOME MOTION (http://www.kimberart.com/nit.htm)

Ultimately, the idea is going to be: to light the candle in Aset's "boat",
then pick it up and set it in the Nile to float around.

The sun disk is still in there, but I thouht you had said once that the winged disk was at the top of important stuff (Like writings). That's originally why I had placed it there, not really as a representation of the sun. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a wannabe Pharaoh. ;)

Please advise.

You click on the candle in Aset's hand,
then drag it over and place it on the water.

Please let me know what you think.
I'm also thinking of adding a bit of a soundtrack,
provided it won't inflate the fle too much.
Right now is a cute little 62Kb.

Question any chance the candle in Aset's hand could be lit by clicking?

Also is it possible for the six candles to float downstream (disappear from site) as each new candles is placed on the river older one disappear?--just an idea I don't know flash

even better could the candles actually apper to move downstream?

Separate question for future projects reference...

I didn't know you can click and drag with flash:)

Would setting up a flash whereby people could place items (graphics) on a shrine and then they stay there for a period of days be doable? Hard? easy?

and to get more ornate...Is the following Doable, Hard, Easy, Terribly time consuming, a normal fash thngy:

I'd love people to be able to place graphics they have created as offerings on a shrine....but I imagine each graphic needs to be programmed in so uploading and click and drah would probably not work?

Let me see:

Question any chance the candle in Aset's hand could be lit by clicking?
I'm sure it could, I'll have to sleep on that. (I'm sure the answer will come to me in a dream).

Also is it possible for the six candles to float downstream (disappear from site) as each new candles is placed on the river older one disappear?--just an idea I don't know flash
I believe it may be, but could possibly make for an extremely long movie, and large (unbearable for dial-up users) filesize. I'll look into it. I don't Flash much, to be honest. I mostly learned it because I wanted to make my own cartoons.

even better could the candles actually apper to move downstream?
This might be an easier task. Again, I'll have to think on it.

Would setting up a flash whereby people could place items (graphics) on a shrine and then they stay there for a period of days be doable? Hard? easy?

I'm not entirely sure. I think the short answer would be no, simply because when the next person loads the page, the Flash will start over from the begining.

I'd love people to be able to place graphics they have created as offerings on a shrine....but I imagine each graphic needs to be programmed in so uploading and click and drah would probably not work?
I don't think Flash is the answer for that one, because of the uploading of graphics. Mind you, I saw a Flash once where you uploaded you picture (a pic of your face) and somehow it was attached to the character in the Flash movie. Unfortunately, I think it might have to do with some sort of Flash server type program, like the multi-user server for Director (maybe it was a Director movie I saw that in). Anyways, if it is possible, it's way outta my league.

I'll see what I can do about lighting the candle. I'm working on the pre-loader right now. I'll post what I have before I call it a night. :)

The pre-loader's been added.

Pretty Bug (http://www.kimberart.com/nit2.htm)

Originally I had askedif you could write in heiroglyphs something that meant "Loading". The heiroglyphs in the cartouche appearing he way they are,
would be the equivalent of L-O-A-D-I-N-G... you see for many flash movies, or "Please wait while we load the movie". Or something like that.

I chose these particulat heiroglyphs for this reason:

The Horus Eye-- all seeing, the sun and the moon were the eyes of Horus
(Maybe I should turn that eye around, as the left eye is the moon.)

Legs walking to the right -- "come"

The red crown of Lower Egypt -- Nit is wearing it.

The moon -- cause it's dawn, and the moon hasn't gone to sleep yet.
(Or it's sunset and the moon's just waking up, I can't remember anymore...)

Scarab -- symbolizes rebirth

Upward Hands -- Symbol of the immortal spirit: Ka

So it might not exactly mean "Loading", but I was trying to get the message that:
"When the moon's around the Festival of Nit will be coming".

Man, it's like trying to write Chinese, when you don't know the language.
;)

Please advise.
(PS. I'll work ot that other stuff tomorrow.)

It seems that some of these questions requires Flash Developers and not designers. There are a few ways to do some of the stuff you asked. I think cre8or project canīt be stuck because of a small lack of flash knowledge.

Puppy, feel free to PM me for help. Since iīm finishing a "Sunset" <_< project, we can discuss it.

Here are some hints.....

Question any chance the candle in Aset's hand could be lit by clicking?

I'm sure it could, I'll have to sleep on that. (I'm sure the answer will come to me in a dream).

Try to create an empty movie clip and the load an external movie into it with:

on click {load movie...}

Sure it works. ;)

Itīs possible.... The only problem is that a slow processor canīt handle more than 3 simultaneous animations.
Hint: reduce some moving plants and make some candles smaller.
Iīm testing mine in a PIII processor. Looks good. :D

even better could the candles actually apper to move downstream?

This might be an easier task. Again, I'll have to think on it.

try movie collisions. When the candle colide with the river it starts a dowstream movement (another movie loads or goto another keyframe)

Would setting up a flash whereby people could place items (graphics) on a shrine and then they stay there for a period of days be doable? Hard? easy?

I'm not entirely sure. I think the short answer would be no, simply because when the next person loads the page, the Flash will start over from the begining.

Possible. With xml and php that could be done. :P :P (not for you cre8or) :D

Again xml can handle the integration with the movie clip. For the upload, php.

Just some thoughts... ;)

Renee, iīm stuck on handling the shadows of the piramids on nile and the shadows on their selves dinamicaly...:bash:

Just to remember. Iīm going to post only for sport (or as a first entry on a next sunrise competition ?). Cre8or is alone on this one. (not quite alone.... iīm her flash consultant - )

Hello All,
I have a couple variations:
In both, you click the candle in Aset's hand to light it,
then you can drag it onto the water.
I still haven't been able to fix being able to place it anywhere else.

You can see the "Silent" Version Here (http://www.kimberart.com/nit.htm)

There's a "Noisy" Version Here (http://www.kimberart.com/nitmusic.htm)

The original file with no sound loads faster, it's only 92Kb
The music inflates the filesize a bit, so people on dial-up
get to enjoy the pre-loader a little longer -- it's 263Kb

Please advise.

Em Hotep,
Kimber.
