Hey designers, (Admin code added by Palmer - U189650D)

Not sure exactly what to tell you in this. So here are some questions/answers that you might have.

What is the Company Name?
"Design Addicts" (yes, plural "addicts")

What is the Company Slogan? (You don't have to include just giving to you for ideas)
"We're Addicted to Quality"

What will be the main business?
The main business is going to be Web Design & Development, but in the future I would like to also include other things including Graphics Development, Software Development, etc. But for now the main is Web.

Media Type?
I would like this logo to be able to go EVERYWHERE. Letterhead, business cards, website anywhere you can think of.

Colors?
I want something eye-catching. Would like to stay away from purple if at all possible. Currently I have text a junky text logo I created with the "Chiller" font and black/lime colors. Just something to be on the website (http://www.designaddicts.com).

For some reason I do seem to be partial to the black/lime colors, or even like some older computer monitors black/orange. I don't know why, but do not limit yourself to these colors. I am open for anything. The best thing would be if the logo could be put on any color background and look good. But would definitely like to make sure it looks good on a black bg and a white bg.

A few pointers:
1.) Professional looking, yet I want it to be eye-catching and something people might easily remember/recognize?
2.) Something that I could leave the name of the business off and it still be recognized? (You know if you see the "Golden Arches" you know that there is a McDonalds sitting nearby, basically I mean not just Design Addicts written somewhere. I want some type of icon/object.)

Ideas that I have had?
1.) Because the name/slogan is "addicts/addicted" I thought of something kind of blurry/distorted but still easy to see and understand?
2.) Someone gave me the idea of a syringe filled with binary code injecting into the name of the company "Design Addicts"
3.) I'm also partial to code behind objects for some reason. Example is in the "Geekscripts" logo design contest the eye with code in it.

Hope this information helps. I'm not too creative when it comes to something like this. Any questions/comments or anything else you would need, feel free to e-mail me: david@designaddicts.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Or you can post here I will try to check it at least once a day.

Please don't limit yourselves to what I have mentioned above. I am completely open for ideas, as I haven't started anything yet. My website has nothing on it yet as I am still working out final prices, etc.

Tentative contest end date: March 7th

The reason I put the date so far out, is because I'm not exactly sure what I want and I know it takes you guys a bit of time to get creative juices flowing.

I'm going to say thanks for everything ahead of time, and will continue to thank you for your work throughout the contest.

Good Luck Designers!

Hello David!
I just came up with an idea based on your syringe theme.
A little creepy, but neat.
The "D" and the "A" make up the handle of the syringe.
It's binary code in the tube, but I'm sure HTML or some other code
would work too. (It's also a different green than the first one.)
Lemme know what you think.
Kimber.

Hi David,
Here's another syringe thingy...
Maybe you could offer some direction, and let me know if I'm going in the right direction.

Sorry I didn't get back to you last night cre8or.
-------

Hey Design Team,

OK bear with me as this is my first time doing something like this. Also I'm not exactly sure what I want so something is going to have to just hit me and I'll know.

Just for my sanity, I'm would like to do something different to keep up with everyone's entries. For example: If I was a design member and turned in my first design, somewhere in my message I would put 'infringer001' for my second design 'infringer002'. I think this will make it easier not only for me to keep track but when I'm giving you guys changes, it should make it easier for you to work with. (You can put this label anywhere, in the message, as small text in the actual graphic wherever, I just think it will end up making life a little more sane) You don't have to do this just an idea.

Now to the evaluating....
--------------
Cre8or - The first entry is cre8or001 (man), second cre8or002 (big syringe), cre8or003 (two small syringes). OK now let me get to evaluating.

cre8or001: Wow this is a unique post. When I first saw it, it was definitely something that stuck in my mind. But here are a few things I noticed. First, with the waves/parentheses coming out from the man to me I feel its like he's radioactive, but it does draw your attention. Second, the 'a' in addicts looks like an 'o'. The last thing, is I don't know that I like him holding paint brushes, etc, I know this is design addicts, but I just am not sure if it fits. But don't throw it out completely just yet.

cre8or002: Hmmm... the syringe thing. I like the idea, but I'm not sure. I really don't like the syringe being that big. I do like the da for the handle though. (This is my least favorite)

cre8or003: This one is interesting. I like the concept behind this. It's simple, professional looking, but I kinda feel it's missing something and I'm not sure what.

cre8or: Of the three so far i feel I like 001 is the best and 003 next. 002 doesn't strike anything in me at all. The syringe in it is just way to big. Maybe I've given you some hints to work with a little more, maybe not.
--------

To all designers:

Let me try and give you a few more ideas I've had.
1) Have a person sitting in front of a PC (where we see the monitor, kindof at an angle), have the person with hands on keyboard or keyboard & mouse. Then have the person's head turned toward the viewer (us) with a funky grin on his face. Then either have something that looks like code on the screen, or have "Design Addicts" on the screen. I would also like to see Design Addicts beside it.
2) Have a PC just sitting there (we see monitor, maybe have some code on it), with a syringe stuck in the back of it?

Again guys these are just my ideas. You are the DESIGNERS! Use your creativity and come up with something anything, you don't have to stick to my ideas. You also don't have to stick to those colors, and since I know colors are the easiest things to change I dont mind looking at an awful color, b/c I can imagine what it would look like with different colors :)

----
Now I also want to turn the tables, I know you read all the posts to see what I like don't like and try to get a feel of the direction I'm going in. You tell me how I'm doing, am I giving detailed enough instructions? Am I being a pain in the tail? :)

Just let me know. But I do want you to know that I am not stuck on any one idea or color. So I am totally open for suggestions.

Thanks so far cre8or,

David

ElKootcho_01 & 02: I like the designs, but I don't want the only thing to be "drugs". If you know what I mean, I want it to have something to do with computers/designing websites, etc. Thanks for these entries though!

Sparkie_001: This design is intriguing, its like one I described. But I'm not sure if it will appeal to the business market? I'm not sure what to tell you

All designers: Just so you know, I have no clue what I want for this business logo. So become creative, I'll know it when I see it.

Thanks for the entries so far.

Well, "drugs" isn't the message so much as being "hooked". More in the sense of having the "need" to design, program or whatever. (I'm sure everyone here can relate!) Kind of along the same lines as the syringe. I'll keep thinking though.

ElKootcho_03: Remarkably, I like this design. It's simple, yet still professional. Let's see if we can do a couple of changes. Instead of the BioHazard symbol, can you do a keyboard & mouse crossed in an X. Or even a keyboard/mouse & paintbrushes crossed. And also I don't like the font Addicts is in, could we try something a little different? Nice work though. Keep the creativity coming too, I like it :)

Thanks,
David

Sorry for not posting a reply earlier, been busy....

Meldy - Design001 & Design002: I like the simplicity of both of these, but I'm not sure what the moon has to do with Designing. Maybe, you can think of something a little different?

AdamP - (at the moment your webserver must be down, so i can't see your graphics #'s) 001 & 002: I do know this much I would rather the person look human, than just a cartoon round head. It can be a cartoon human, but I would rather them look like a human. If you can try to implement that in some way your design might be a consideration.

--------

Designers:

I know what I have below is probably asking quite a lot, but I would like to see someone try a rough sketch of these. I'm just copying from another post that I posted earlier.

Ok one other thing, if you've seen I told someone I didn't like something about one of theirs and you wanted to incorporate something like that in yours. Please still turn in your sketch, if I didn't like it in one design, I might like it in yours.

As I've said throughout the first week of the competition, use your creativity & good luck!

David

Adam P. - adam03 & 04 - I really don't like these two with the just 3 sprigs of hair :) Nice try with these though.
adam05 & 06 - I like these two the best of any you have submitted, but I still feel the character is just a little too non-human/cartoony. I mean I know I'm being very picky about this, but its just personal preference. But if you can continue to work on this design, and make it a little more human like. (Example: cre8or001, is a perfect example the character is human-like, yet still cartoony) Thanks for what you've done so far, look forward to seeing future revisions. :)

Meldy - Ah, I understand now (been one of those long days). I fully agree with you about the whole stay up all night kind of stuff. But I'm not sure the rest of the world will understand. Thanks for your efforts look forward to seeing your new design :D

What about some of you other designers.... Have I scared you off by being so picky??? Or is it just that the end date is so far away, and there are other contests more important right now. I understand, look forward to seeing your posts.

Be Creative, and Good Luck!

infringer
02-12-2003, 05:48 PM
:o Wow, you guys have done a lot of work today

Elkootcho_03: Hey this one is coming along :) I definitely like the font choice better. Instead of having just one huge object (the mouse), can we try to get several smaller objects, such as keyboard/mouse or keyboard/mouse/monitor? They can be crossed, lying side by side, the mouse could be draped over monitor with keyboard leaning up against edge. Something to get more than one aspect of the design :)

Elkootch_04 & 05: I think that I like these designs a little bit more than the previous design, a little bit less busy than all the binary code. But I still feel the same about just one object. Could we try something different here, even if you have to make the circle a bit bigger. Also make the words Addicts a tad bit bolder.

Meldy - Design003: Wow! You do very well with turning description into drawings. As you said this is a rough sketch its hard to give you much advice right now. One thing I did notice, can we make the binary code on the monitor smaller to fit more lines on it? I look forward to seeing a more detailed design :D

Elkootch_06: Just to put this plain and simple Elkootcho. I liked your other designs alot better than this one. Work on the others when you get a chance :) Or if you think of something different for this one, resubmit it :)

Thanks for the great entries. I look forward to seeing the revisions and more creative entries.

Good luck!

I will be able to work on this tomorrow and should have an update by tomorrow night. I will make the coding smaller in the window.

I have a question. Would you prefer just one color besides the black, or two? I am thinking on keeping the colors pretty simple. I will probably use your suggestions of the orange in one and the green in another, and then try accents of some other colors as well.

Thanks for being so thorough with us! :D

Hey Guys,

Elkootcho_07 & 08: I really like the designs, you are using for the circle logos/icons, but I'm still just not sure that something like this will work for me for a logo. But it is very possible, that I could use something like these in the near future for actual Icons for certain things I'm wanting to do on my website. If you'd like I'll be sure to keep you at the top of my list for when that time comes?

Meldy, I'm going to do a brief talk about each one individually, then my general suggestions.

Design004: Personally I don't like the box around this one, but this opinion might change. But for now, no box.
Design005: This one is interesting but is it just me or is the man a little green?
Design006: I think i like this one the best of the three. But in this one does he have a orange tint?
General: OK, the first thing is I think that they all had a tint on the human, I believe it is very faint and would rather just see him white. The other thing, is can we work on his face a little more. Mainly his eyes, to give him more realistic eyes? I understand that the circles represent a kind of dazed/addicted look. But I'm thinking that people might just thing we were stopping short, if you know what I mean. An idea might be to give them a bloodshot look, with the color that you are using for that particular one? And as for colors right now, you can just pick one of the orange/lime colors and use it for this time and then when it gets closer to the end of the contest, we will work on colors.

Thanks for the work guys! And sorry for being so particular.

David

One note: I feel that maybe it is losing some of its simplistic qualities that made the design appealing when I made the eyes more realistic. Then again it is also due to personal preferences! Is this more of the look you were wanting? :D

Meldy: I do agree with you about the simplicity of the design with changing the eyes. I hate to ask this, but can we change it back? And maybe let me see it done one other way, instead of exact circles, maybe some semi-oval, semi-circle kind of thing? You know not exactly an oval, but not exactly a circle either.
Also, I have a few changes I would like to see, but I know that they might take quite a while. And if you don't want to attempt them I'll understand. OK here's what I'd like to see... If you could flip the whole picture so the man is looking the opposite way, like the pic I copied and flipped below. But I would like to see the mouse/keyboard switch too so that the mouse is on the right and keyboard on the left. Also if we could either push the monitor more toward the top-center or turn it more toward the user.

Thanks for everything your doing Meldy :)

Demex: Wow, great work. But out of all 6 of them I liked the ones in the bottom corners. The one on the left is a little less appealing to me, but I definitely liked those two better than the other's. I'm not really sure where to tell you to go from here. Lets try a couple of things though. The bottom-left one, lets first make his smile & nose a little smaller. And as for the bottom-right one I'm not sure what to tell you. :) Maybe you can think of something to do with them or you might even come up with something totally different. Thanks for the entry.

Meldy
02-15-2003, 05:51 PM
Here are a few more designs.

I don't really understand what you mean by turning the monitor towards the user? If you mean the cartoon of the user - it is in front of him.. his head is just turned. Do you want just a side view of the monitor?

If you mean the person viewing your site.. then I can face the monitor front wise. However I feel that the design is more interesting if you can see the side and front of the monitor as it is now.

Hope this is a step in the right direction! :D

Wow Meldy, I'm amazed at how quickly you make the changes. And how precise you can get them. As for my directions about turning the monitor, I was talking about turning it more toward the site vistor not the cartoon, and I wasn't talking about a straight on shot, but just turning it a tad bit more. Sorry for the confusion, but I actually think that it is fine the way it is. :)

I'm not even sure what to tell you :) I need a day or so to think about it. One thing I would like to see sometime, is maybe somehow adding some color to his shirt? I think that might separate him a little bit more. I can even be a gradient fill that fades out, doesn't have to be a solid color just something to kind of separate him.

I'm going to take a day or so to think about my whole idea and everything. I really like this design, now I just have to visualize how I'm wanting to use it. (IE. text placement, container, etc.)

Thanks for the work you have been doing. And I should be back around Tuesday.

Hi Meldy,
Well I'm back on Monday, had a nice day no classes because of a snow storm :) So I had time to think.

Of the last three I like the middle one (blue/orange) but I also like the last one (green) but maybe if we could try a different color on the inside of the circle?

Could you also take off the dark edge of the circle on both?

OK, next thing when you get a chance. On the screen I'd like to see the blue/orange circle have a orange colored type. and the green have a green colored type.

Thanks for everything.

Meldy
02-17-2003, 06:16 PM
Here are the changes you requested! :D I still think that the strongest is the orange and blue. The green is the strongest with purple, and I know you want to stay away from purple! I could come up with a triad (three color) compostions if you like.

Wow snow! Here in the south we don't really get much weather change. I bet it is pretty!

infringer
02-17-2003, 06:34 PM
ubergerl: Very nice, I like the real simplicity in the design. Could we maybe try a different font?

Meldy: Wow amazed again at the quickness. I do agree with you that the blue/orange is the strongest. And the green/purple does look good, but purple is just not my color, also I do not think the green/blue looks bad, but the blue/orange stands out the best :) If I could get you to change the orange text back to white. Also could I see one of them with some sort of code in it? Be it php/javascript or something like that, not html if at all possible (in white font). (if you need some code, just reply back and I'll get you some)

All Designers: ubergerl's logo design, threw some new ideas into my head, so I figured I would throw them in the pot to see what you might can make out of them.

1.) Try to do "Design Addicts" in block letters, with code(be it binary or actual code) inside the letters. Do this design in several layouts, side-by-side, on top of each other, staggered, or any other design you can think of.
2.) Try to do something creative with the letters "DA", but I would still like to see the full name somewhere in the logo. But that is not necessary if I see something I really like.

Thanks for the work so far guys!
David

ubergerl: Lets try something, the 3rd one (bottom) in your post of 3. For the word addicts, lets try giving it an outline of of lime. Also I'd like to see it exactly like the word Design also. The third thing I'd like to see is the circle thing in orange. Also maybe we could try the circle in black with the text in orange or lime?

Thanks.

I added the code.. however you can't make out what it says. :o I could make it larger but it looks really awkward! I think the impression of the lines work nicely.. let me know what you think. :P

Meldy: I love the code one :D That's kind of what I was looking for didn't really have to be readable. I like the whole design we have here now, but lets start working on the name. Lets try it a few different ways. Maybe under the logo on one line, or to the left of the logo? Can we try some different font sets? You do what you think will look good and I'll tell you what I think, I'm just not used to seeing the name of the company on the left side of a logo? But maybe I'm wrong.

ubergerl: Take your time. :) Take the bottom one (black) and try making the numbers in the icon lime or orange and let me see what that would look like.

All Designers: I'm still open for any suggestions you might have. ;) Also don't forget the contest will end 2 weeks from Friday. The end date is March 7.

Thanks,
David

Just thought I would come in here and post what I think about QSDA's entry. He had e-mailed me an entry before and I replied that way, but I'll post what I said about it.

Basically for QSDA's entry I'm not exactly sure how the business world would take it in. It doesn't seem to professional to me. Anyway, he says he's working on a new design now. Can't wait to see it :)

Also, don't forget less than two weeks before this contest is over.

Good luck,
David

Hows this looking? Suggestions?

infringer

Huhhso: Out of your posts, I like huhh05 the best. Let me make a few suggestions and you can see what you can do with them. First go ahead and get rid of the "falling" text. The second thing I would like to see is try something different between the words, you know some sort of icon/logo. Something that will might stand out.

Ubergerl: I like this post now :) I hate to be a pain in the butt, but could I see a couple different variations of this logo? First, this exact logo but the text colors switch green w/ black outline. Then the next kind, if possible the circle in lime and the binary in black? Also if possible I'd like to see the same logo with the circle orange/binary black and then that reversed black/orange and the company name matched accordingly also. If this become too much trouble I understand. :) I know how it is to work with picky clients.

Meldy: Can't wait to see yours.

All Designers: Only 12 days left for entry, I will not accept any more entries after Midnight on March 8th. So that gives you all day on the 7th to work :P I should be able to post the winner by March 10th, and no later than March 14th.

Good luck,
David

Meldy: Great I can't wait to see some other options for the logo. Maybe some I'd like to see could be Design at top, Addicts bottom. To the right, under it on one line. But you're the designer, I'm pretty sure we have the icon part of the logo to the point I really like it, now just the text to work on. So this is where the designer's idea's really get to working :)

QSDA: Of the two I like the first one, but I don't like the pills. True the name is Design Addicts, but I don't want people to see the logo and think drugs. I want them to think Addicted to work, quality, design. Maybe that will help give you some more direction?

Good luck,
David

Here is the text to the side. However I feel like the design lends itself better with the text on the bottom.. or split with the top and bottom. I works better with the width of the text instead of the height. :)

Aright, I don't often enter contests, but I wanted to add a little something to the mix. I'm really NOT happy with 001 at all, but ah well. 002 was more the random kind of feel I was going for. If you don't like, no skin off my back :)

Wow I've got a lot of work. Sorry I haven't been around, power's been out here. ICE STORM! :(

Anyway here goes...

Meldy: You've given me a lot of options. And I like the way a few of them look. But what I think I'd like to see is in the group of 4 staggered ones you posted, take the one split top & bottom and place the words under the logo. And let me see what that looks like. Also can we try doing the one with the words beside the logo in the same font as the one mentioned above? (ie no colors in the words). We'll see what that does for us :)

Huhhso: I appreciate your entries, but I'm just not being struck by them like I have been by some of the other's entries. Maybe you can think of something else? If not, thanks for entering the contest :)

Chelle: This is a nice entry also, but I still just am not struck like the entries of others. Maybe you can think of something else? If not, thanks for entering the contest :)

Ubergerlgeek: Wow I really like all of these :) Can you maybe take one or two of them and replace the web address with the slogan, "We're Addicted to Quality" Thanks!

Jeremy: Thanks for entering into my contest. Your entries are very interesting, but again I do not feel struck by it. Again, Thanks for the entry.

Thanks for the entries guys,
David

Meldy: Yeah thats what I was looking for. Lets try something different take the words the way you have them now, remove the bar between Design & addicts and place it below addicts, then under that bar do me one with the web address http://www.designaddicts.com and one with the slogan We're Addicted to Quality

Thanks!

Meldy & Ubergerl: I believe we have both of your models, developed as much as we possibly can. Thank you both for your work on my logo, for the time I think we will leave them just like they are. This way I have several different models to choose from. I expect when I make my choice that minor changes can still be made? If not no biggie. Again thank you both, and if you have any more changes that you think should be made just post them on the board and I'll take a look.

QSDA: I like the design aspect of your new logos, but I'm not sure that they aren't a little too cartoony. Maybe I'm making sense. But if you would like to revise and repost, you have until Friday night.

All Designers: Contests ends this Friday (march 7), results should be posted no later than the next Friday (march 14).

Meldy: I don't know if it's too late, but is there any way I could see a greyscale model of the icon portion? Just for reference as some things it will be used in greyscale. If not no biggie, I was just wondering what it looked like.

Hi Guys,

Well after a long and careful consideration process, talking with several friends, comparing logos, & just trying to decide. I have finally come down to a winner. I first want to thank all the designers that did enter my contest for all the hard work that you have put in.

So now for what you have all been waiting for....

Drumroll Please...

And the winner is................... :D

ubergerlgeek

The logo I chose was in her post of the group of 4, near the top of Pg 6. I chose the bottom one.

Anyway, again Thanks to the Designers for a great competition. And Good luck to everyone in the future.

Ubergerl - You can e-mail me or IM me and we will work out final details, formats, etc.

Again Thanks to all Designers.

I do want to apologize to Meldy for asking him to do all that work, and then not choosing his logo. And Meldy, I do want to thank you for all the work that you did.

It is just when it came down to decision time, after careful consideration and talking with some of my friends, I then chose ubergerl's design. Sure the design was nothing like what I mentioned, but I did continue to say give me anything and I'll look at it.

Anyhow, again I apologize and I wish Meldy lots of luck on future contests as he is very talented!
