(Admin code added by Palmer - 4217653C)
We are a SURFBOARD COMPANY planning to launch a line of new products and we need several logos. These logos will be located on the fiberglass surfboards as well as marketing literature for brochures, mailers etc. Our products are targeted for both the young (MTV generation) consumer as well as adults. Some will need to be edgy and cool while others will be more conservative. Let's start with the conservative logo 1st - Legacy Longboards...
I have a pretty good idea of what I want for this first one so I thinks it's pretty straightforward (if I can articulate my thoughts). Of course, I welcome any feedback or ideas. We need to have this one finalized by this Wednesday the 19th so we don't have much time.
LEGACY LONGBOARDS - As the name would indicate, these are the longer surfboards (8'+ surfboards) which are targeted for a more mature (aka - affluent) consumer. We're trying to achieve a RETRO, 1950's CLASSIC theme with these boards. Definitely more of a "Beach Boys" theme than something edgy.
I would like the logo to be in keeping with most surfboard logos which are simple ovals with the company name (Legacy) inside the oval. I really like the logo design for Bruce Jones surfboards (I've tried to attach) as a guide ( http://www.brucejones.com/stock.htm ). I would like our logo to say Legacy in script similar to the Bruce Jones logo. I think the Legacy name would look good in either silver or gold (probably silver) in a classic script font much like the Bruce Jones logo. The background of the oval should be all black, unlike the Bruce Jones background which has both black and white. The edges (border) of the oval should have a thin band in the same color as the name. silver or gold, to act as a contrast on surfboards that are of a dark color such as navy blue. If you have any creative ideas that might add to my design, I welcome it.
The name Longboards should be directly under the logo but positioned more towards the right of the logo. This doesn't need to be in script and won't be on the actual surfboard, just in marketing literature so consumers know which product this is.
I dont know if I'll need to do a separate contest but the back of the surfboard will need to have a simple script "L" in the same color - either silver or gold. Think of the L from Laverne and Shirley! The edges of the L should probably be in black to act as a contrast.
Thanks so much and good luck!

Hello SurferDude
Please forgive my boldness but can I suggest that 'borrowing' (or even partially imitating) the Bruce Jones concept could lead to shaky legal ground? Especially as you are both in the same business...?
That choice is yours though. Perhaps let's get to the heart of your company's identity! :) Here are my initial ideas...your thoughts and feedback would be very much appreciated! B) :)
Here's my submission... :)

I have to agree with Eagle. I don't know if you want to risk your product being possibly mistaken as being a product made by Bruce Jones. That may help your business as far as income is concerned but it doesn't help your identity in the marketplace.
Just a thought.....

Wow, you folks are good. A few came close to nailing it first time 'round.
I understand and appreciate some of your points regarding patterning the logo too much like the sample I included. However, I don't think it's really applicable in this particular case as the vast majority of surfboard logos (and there are hundreds) are ovals with the name inside - it's kind of the industry norm. Since the logo needs to be on the surfboard, the oval gives a clean look to the board and does not take away from the classic designs of the boards.
So far I really like the submissions by PENNYLN and Gilles le bon the best. I really like #3 & #4 by PENNYLN. Can we experiment a bit with the script font as I don't know that I love that one? Perhaps a fancier "L" if possible that stands out a bit and a little thinner, fancier font? Can you add the hibiscus flower in #6 to #4 and make the band around the oval just a little thicker? Can the name be in silver or gold? I also really like #2 and #5 by Gilles le Bon. Can we experiment with the script font on #2 and #5?
Thanks so much! You folks RULE!

Mute Design - Those are some interesting designs. The third one may work for one of my other products in which I'll be posting the logo requirement shortly. For this one, I want to stick to the simple, classy style like the initial post.
I would describe our typical customer for the Legacy product line as a middle aged, affluent male who drives a Lexus or BMW. Yes, these guys surf too! Now I'm really sounding crazy...
Good stuff so far...

Great stuff so far. Getting much closer - Here's my wish list...
1) We want to scrap the gold, keep the silver.
2) We would like to mix up the color scheme a bit to see if something else looks better. Can we reverse the color scheme and have the font in black or navy blue and the backround in silver? Also, the background in navy blue instead of black?
4) We like the light effect on the edge of the oval by GRAPHIXGUY and GILLES LE BON..
5) Let's replace the word 'Longboards' with 'Surfboards'. I like how ELKOOCHO is able to add Longboards inside the oval.
6) Overall we want a classic script L with a twist so it is a little unique. The lower part of the L should have a big loop. Hard to get a good "L" that doesn't remind me of a Lysol can!
7) We like the "L"'s that are larger than the oval like ELKOOTCHO and PENNYLN.
8) Add a different color pin line within the oval in blue or red to help it stand out.
Thanks again,
-SURFERDUDE

When all is said and done, how do you need the final logo? Are gradients ok to use or will the delivered product need to be solid color?

Thanks for all of the submissions. I think we’re close to finalizing this one – at least we now know what we want – kind of a best of compilation of our favorites. Let’s see who can put them all together for the final winner!
Here’s our feedback on the frontrunners:
FONT STYLE:
MARK BEAUDRY – Your last submission nails the font style we like. Can you make it a little larger within the oval? Can you take a look at our favorite oval shapes and color combos (below). The fin is a cool addition – keep it in your revision, if possible
MUTE DESIGN- We like the font style of your last submission too except for the Top of the “L” - It’s a little too “squiggly (if that’s a word) at the top. Can you pattern the “L” more tike the simpler one submitted by Mark Beaudry. Can you take a look at our favorite oval shapes and color combos (below).
GRAPHXGUY We liked your submission in the silver/black font a lot, except for the top of the “L” – too fancy. We like the simpler one last submitted by Mark Beaudry. Please do the name in a silver font.
EL KOOTCHKO – we liked your font except for the “L.” Please pattern more like the L by Mark Beaudry (larger bottom loop). Gradient are OK and if you can use the oval shapes mentioned below, it would be great.
SURFBOARD NAME:
ELKOOTCHKO did a nice job of incorporating it into the logo below the Legacy name. Otherwise, we like GRAPHXGUY’s style in # 3 & # 4 with the lines above and below “surfboard.”
COLORS:
We’ve debated this back and forth. We want to avoid white fonts in favor of the silver. Gold is out as is the blue. Black and silver our favorites. For those that will resubmit, please provide 2 versions, one with silver font/ black background/silver rings and the inverse black font/silver background/black rings.
OVAL SHAPES:
2 styles we like:
PENNYLN (latest revision # 1 and # 3) with the larger silver band. The band would look good in silver gradient like graphxguy.
GRAPHXGUY - We like your silver oval - spot on!
Looking forward to picking a winner hopefully out of the next round. Thanks again for the incredible work so far everybody…it’s neck and neck as we head towards the finish line!

Both very nice so far.. my partner has flip flopped again on the color scheme and feels the black is just too similar to the other surfboard company's logo. I have (reluctantly) agreed. Let's go back to the blue rather than black- a deep, dark, classy blue (navy?)
Marc Beaudry - can you change 'longboard' to 'surfboard?'
Thanks - love what I'm seeing so far.

A couple last ideas (I'm on a roll) - we like the line down the middle of the board like MUTE DESIGN had - it makes the oval look like a surfboard! The little shiny effect after the 'y' is a nice addition if there is room like MUTE DESIGN (or a smalll hibiscus flower like Peenyln.
There, now I'm done...
-SURFERDUDE
I'm not sure we're allowed to do that? It may be considered copying another artist's logo. Palmer?

Wow, Mark Beaudy and Dynagirl, both of these look great - this will be a tough decision.
Just a couple final tweaks:
We're still struggling a bit on the colors. We don't want black/silver but the blue/silver looks too much like the "Ford" symbol with the blue background. Could we try a few color combos? Maybe switch to a blue font for the name and outer ring and making the background silver?
Mark Beaudry = do you have the ability to add color in the program you are utilizing - we would really like to see silver and blue.
Dynagirl - can you take the name "surfboards" out of the logo and place it below the oval?
Thanks,
SURFERDUDE

Anthony - We would like to mix and match from your last submission if we can:
1)We like the blue contrast in #1.
2) We like the shape of the font style in logo #1 except for the shape of the "L" - the top loop in Logo #4 is preferred.
3) We like how the font in #3 is a bit thicker and seems to stand our more than the others. Can you do that w/ #1?
4) We would like the edges of the oval w/ a slightly larger accent trim in either blue or silver.
5) The word 'surfboards' is preferred either in the oval but below legacy or outside the oval.
6) We would also like to see these changes using the font from #3

Love all your latest designs - all are awesome! We've had a split vote on our favorites but are leaning towards Mute Design at this point. We think any of these are perfect and have an interest in purchasing at least two of your final logos as well. I will follow up with you through Palmer.

MARK BEAUDRY - Mentioned in my previous post that we are interested in buying more than one logo and really liked your submissions as well. I really like #1 in your last submission with the blue background. However, can you take out the fin and just keep the inner loop in tact. Also, take the word SURFBOARDS out of the logo and put it below the logo, in capital letters and running the length of the logo with a line above and below the name for effect.
