Ok, here goes logo # 2 - this one will definitely require your creative talents. We would like to have this one finalized by Wednesday (11/19) or Thursday (11/20) so we don’t have much time on this either - sorry!
Voodoo surfboards is our line of boards targeting the younger, mtv, extreme sports consumer. it needs to be edgey, unique, cool – and keep with the voodoo theme. The logo will be the only graphic on our plain white surfboards so it needs be an attention grabber !!!
Now for the creative stuff - I have a general idea of the concept . The logo should be a human face or skull (weird, I know!). I really, really like the logo design I found on the website for a former australian band, voodoo surf gods (http://www.voodoosurfgods.com/history.htm). I would like to use this as a guide to work from = it’s unique, edgey, and kind of funny. The hypnotized look of their character is pretty neat as is the sun shape (ignore the guitars and dancing skeletons outside the head in their logo). I don’t want to copy their logo obviously but it should give you an idea of what I like conceptually. Get as creative as you want!!!
The name "Voodoo Surfboards" should be below your design. Think the name would look cool in a “human bones” motif for the lettering (perhaps in an off white or yellow color as it will need to contrast the white surfboard.
Or, I would like to use more futuristic lettering like that used by primal surfboards ( http://www.primalsurf.com ). I would like the body of the lettering in blood red with the edges in black or silver or the inverse - a silver body with red edges.
Hope that’s enough to start. I can't wait to see some awesome submissions!!!

To All,
Now I'm impressed. You guys are all very talented - each one is cool and unique in it's own right. I now realize how many directions you can go in with one theme! Anyway, here are my observations and the direction we want to go in moving forward with this particular logo.
General Theme: All logos are great. However, I would like to stick closer to the sun logo used by Voodoo Surfer Gods (http://www.voodoosurfgods.com) without duplicating it. The closer you can get to that logo the better as it captures everything we want - scary, a little humeroua, and it nails the voodoo theme. Like the sun theme since it relates to surfing. Color schemes should be limited to black/red/silver/orange/yellow/off white. Just as a visual, the name and the logo may need to be separate with the name on one side and the head/skull on the other like those in this link (http://www.primalsurf.com/mainframeset.htm).
Here's some more feedback/direction on my favorites so far:
Penny Lane Graphics:
-Like the concept a lot but we need to make the character more edgy (yet still fun). Teenage consumers will want it to be a little scary.
-Make the eyes the same size - red eyes would be cool. I like the hypnotized theme used in the Voodoo Surf Gods logo.
-Change the color scheme to include black/red/silver/orange & or off white
-I like the staggered letters in voodoo but make the V larger and less like a check mark
- Is it possible to do a sun shape for the head like the one in the Surf God's link? Using the sun helps because it correlates to surfing and could stand alone on the other side of the board separate from the voodoo name which may need to be separate. We way need to have the Voodoo name running vertically up the board like in this link and the "head" to stand alone on the other side of the boards (that's the "in" styles for boards this season).
Mute Design
Love the idea for stickers/t shirts that you have. Not sure how it works here on Design Outpost, but wou;d be interested in that not as a logo but as a separate marketing piece. I will direct my question to Palmer as I want to follow the rules.
Cre8or
- Please make the skull character a bit less menacing and with a frontal view instead of the ¾ profile
-We would like more of a unique Voodoo character and less of a skull (I know I originally said a skull - my cohorts now disagree and want more "vodoo":)
-Make the pins in the skull/head a bit more substantial
-Make the word surfboards smaller and add yellow to the voodoo (red/orange/yellow)
Mark Beaudry
-WILD Concept! Way to run w/the VOODOO theme... rasta hair is great too...
-We would like the character separated from the letters as he may need to stand alone on the other side of the board (name on one side, voodoo head on the other). Maybe make the head a little bigger w/a little more detail (if possible).
-Can you angle the face straight on rather than current angle and put black x's for the eyeballs? I think they would look cool with the red eyes.
-Can you do more of a bones or gothic style font in off white where the letter D is somewhat differentiated from the O’s?
Don't mean to be a pain but this one is really important to our product line so we need to blow them away.
Additional incentive? Perhaps we can throw in a surfboard w/winning logo to the winner? Not sure it that's against the rules here. Palmer?
You guys rule!!!!

After the contest you can approach any of the designers and make them an offer for any of their creations. If they are willing to provide what they have designed, you can work out the price and then send the additional money through the following page and I will pay the designer...

A couple other thoughts I forgot to mentione.
ZOMBIE (couldn't remember the word). I like incorporating a ZOMBIE look to the character. Like he's in a trance of some sort. Zombie, Zombie Zombie.
Also, I want it to be a "face" and not necessarily a human head. Just needs to have a face in any shaped object you desire (like a sun)

Very sorry for the delayed response – been a bit sidetracked of late
You’ve made us realize the immense possibilities with this concept. Although there will only be one “official” winner, we will be interested in purchasing multiple logos (through Palmer) as this concept does not need to be limited to just one character (there will be 8 different surfboard models:
We’ve had “heated” debates on the theme - my partner now wants to get away from the skull motif because it’s too common among surfboard themes. He likes more of a ZOMBIE/ HUMAN HEAD theme:
GENERAL COMMENTS
1) LIKE: Pins in the head work for the Voodoo theme
2) LIKE – Zombie face – no skulls. The face will need to stand alone on one side of the board as a logo. Putting the head as the center of a unique shape such as a sun, flame, star, or even just a circle is preferred, I’ve tried to attach some mad tiki faces as a guide on some additional face ideas.
3)Like a Weathered/Aged/Decaying look to the entire logo if possible (don’t know the technical term, sorry) with the colors flowing into each other. Also like lines that aren’t perfectly straight (Peeny Ln – like your last submission). .
4)LIKE – Protruding eyes – Dynagirl – closest so far to the eye theme – much like the Voodoo Surfer Gods logo– scary and funny.
5)We also like the “twirly” eyes used in this website sitehttp://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/TheVortex/index.htm…
6)Let’s avoid yellow (except maybe w/eyes) now if possible. Bright reds that would stand out against a white backgound is preferred.
7)Let the face flow into the logo design (sun, flame, etc) rather than having distinct separating lines.
8) Logo really needs to POP OUT – so if here are colors, styles, etc. that you think would work, please submit!
FONT STYLES
We will probably use multiple for print advertising but will need one right away according to 2 preferred styles. The name “VOODOO” will run vertically up the board and will need to stand out against a white surfboard (the word surfboard is not on the board). The Primal surfboard photo attached is the exact placement and font style preferred.
BONES:
Mark Beaudry – you used a cool decaying bone theme (very real looking – great detail) on the last submission for the letter “D.” We would like the whole name in the bone theme. The letters will need to stand out against a white surfboard so I would like to see the bones in an antique white with red &/or black outline to help it contrast against a white surfboard (we don’t want the grey background). Please put a bone above the last “O” as an accent mark. I like the aged/weathered style used in the previous font – not sure if rhis style can be incorporated into the face.
FUTURISTIC
We’re still looking for something unique with a futuristic theme. I would like to do something unique w/the letters like the “V” and the “O”s – not sure how but the “O’s look very boring so please be as creative as possible.
The closest concepts I can find are Primal surfboards and the Terminator 2 movie font. I’ve included in the attachment for your reference. The Primal design is really what we are after on this one and the name Voodoo will be on the board like in the photo attached. Silver, black and bright red are the preferred color combos in the font.
FAVORITES SO FAR
These are the ones we like so far but would like to see several new submissions from as many of you as possible based upon the criteria above. Remember, the winner gets a surfboard w/the logo in addition to the money!!!
MARK BEAUDRY – please see our notes on the font above. We like the decaying, aged technique in the font and wonder if it can be incorporated into the face somehow? The hair is a cool effect but let’s tone it down a bit and give more detail to the face (make the face larger in relation to the hair).- let’s go back to you 1st submission and work from there making the face larger. Let’s give him a goatee to match the hair. A gold nose ring would be funny. A few more stitches in the mouth for effect. My idea w/ the eyes doesn’t work. Let’s try the twirly design in a red and/or yellow as seen in this link.
sitehttp://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/TheVortex/index.htm. The arrows in the last submission help make it look more like a logo rather than just a face on the board. Can we also do one version with the teeth style used in the Voodoo Surfer Gods logo? Love your work – Legacy, Voodoo – keep it up!
EL Kootcho – kind of a cool concept w/the face. Not sure if you can do something w/the eyes as mentioned above. Would like the colors to all flow together. Can you use red, silver/backs/antique white – no yellow. Can you give the whole logo an Aged look?
Gilles Le Bon – the 1st of your last submissions is pretty cool. Can you add color to the face, use the mouth style in the Voodoo Surfer gods logo, the “twirly eyes” concept mentioned above. We decided we don’t like yellow so let’s stick to red, black, silver and one other accent color. We would like the face to be more human and less of a skull. The name needs to be separate from the logo and should stick to the themes mentioned above. The silver “blade” idea and red/silver color combo in you earlier submission would be cool w/this logo
PENNY LN – Good colors – not sure if you can cross your 1st and 2nd submissions to make it both scary and funny (the eyes in #1 make it funny)? If you think you can while using the criteria above, please give it a try as we love your designs.
Dynagirl – great job w/the eyes let’s give him red eyeballs for further effect – Can you make the sun shape more like a flame in red, orange, blue and yellow and give the face a more human look rather than a skull? Please use a color other than white as the surfboard will be all white.
MUTE DESIGN - Love some of your stuff for print afvertising!
Thanks for all your help. Sorry for the change in direction but this one is really, really important to our product line so we have to nail it. I will be eternally grateful to the one that solves this challenging concept (and all those that participate)!!!
Thanks,

Yes, I wanted to get an idea of which would stand out - not sure either does - can you thing of any 'eye popping ' color for the eyes that would make them really stand out w/out ruining the logo? Let's get rid of the white face and black background and do the entire face in red so it all flows together. Maybe we can make the eyes bigger and use a bright yellow for them (or another color that stands out).

Anthony - Very good question. I think we need to separate this contest into 2 distinct categories 1) actual Voodoo surfboard logo 2) other Voodoo logo related items used for print advertising, t shirts, posters etc. The Tiki head as well as a few of your other submissions would be great for print, stickers, shirts, etc. I want to talk to you separately (through Palmer) about buying these outside of the contest. I also want to talk to you about brochures, etc. The tiki head (although awesome) would be too difficult to reproduce on a surfboard.
Our most immediate need is for the logo on the board (we've got timing issues in order to get it prepared for a big surf show. I think a TRIBAL SUN would look AWESOME if we can somehow incorporate a tribal face (hypnotized, Voodooesque character) into the middle of the sun. The tribal theme is hot right now and it would look cool standing alone on a white background (imagine the logo about 4" in diameter). The challenge is to incorporate a tribal face into the sun in a way that it all flows and looks KILLER.
OK, I'll throw another $25 in for the effort - $150 + a surfboard to the "official" winner!!! TRIBAL SUN - w/VOODOO THEMED FACE incorporated into it in a flowing manner (or any other previous ideas already mentioned - not stuck on what idea). I know I'm going to end up buying more than one logo in addition to all the print advertsing stuff so we'll keep it at $150 for now.

MARK BEAUDRY - I'm really struggling with yours - I feel like my suggestions on changes to the face are taking away from your original idea rather than improving upon it. Thanks to me he's morphed into some sort of evil beast rather than the Bob Marley looking Voodoo guy I loved originally (like a Voodoo guys aren't evil too). I'm going to have nigtmares of your last logo tonight!
I REALLY like the Voodoo head in your very 1st post the most and wonder how I can work that head into a usable, stand alone logo. Any ideas? He was great except I wanted to do something more interesting with the eyes (a hyptnotic effect) and have it stand alone on the board in a way that doesn't look awkward. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated as I'm sure they're much better than mine!

MARK BEAUDRY - LOVE the bones - great job! They can definitely work as can the font used for "Surfboards." Just some modifications if you don't mind:
BONE FONT-
1) Add a bit more red and black to the edges - it will help contrast the name against a white surfboard 2) Use a more antique white/yellow tint to the bones so they stand out against a white background. 3) Place the lone bone above the second to last "O" and place it at a 45 degree angle. 4) Use the "decaying" effect in the letters like you did in the very 1st Voodoo submission. I think it would have a great effect. 6) Finally, can you add a rope like in the attached picture to the "V" for effect?
Also, add an "S" to the end to make surfboard plural if you don't mind. I also REALLY like the futuristic font used in "surfboards" and would like to see "Voodoo" in that font too (we will use multiple fonts on the boards). I would like to see Voodoo in this font but larger with the body in bright red and the edges in a silver/charcoal (like on the Primal surfboard). The challenge is going to be making the many "O's" unique - I know you can pull it off.
Can you take the 1st head and replace the grey background behind the head with a red background for contrast. I have an idea for the eyes I'll post shortly.
Awesome work! We're really making progress now.

WOW, El Kootcho has come out of left field to mix things up a bit - VERY IMPRESSIVE entry, I must say. Great job!!!!
A couple initial tweaks I'd like to see to make it even better. I think a Ying Yang symbol on the hat would look cool. Except this ying yang should be black and red instead of black and white. Let's stick some pims in his forehead for effect. Can you make the hat a bit ruffled/worn looking and make his eyeballs either red or yellow for effect? Can you make the "V" in the second one a little thinner so the head stands out more? The name "Voodoo" will likely be separate from the "head" logo so it's just going to be the actual face and the "V" as the logo on one side of the board and just the name voodoo (w/out the face) on the other side. The name would look cool with the "V" and the "D" in bones and the rest of the words using the 1st font - red/yellow. Can you bring down the rope a bit on the "V" and make it brown?
Kind of an evil Voodoo MEDICINE MAN/WITCH DOCTOR theme - I think we've found a concept I LOVE!

S-W-E--E-T!!!
Looks like we're down to a 3 way race to the finish - El Kootcho, Mark Beaudry and MUTE DESIGN!
El Koocho - love the latest stuff. really, really great. I think I can pull together a best of:
1) Like the Green Face in #4. Could we also try a grey face?
2) Like the Silver pins in head in #3 (but can we make the pins slightly more visible?)
3) Like the yellow eyes (can we make the eyeballs red?). I want the eyes to be looking straight ahead rather than on an angle. Should be more menacing. Not sure if there is a way to give him a more shocked, hypnotized look - feel free to experiment.
4) Like the red outline in #2 around the bones and face but not over the hat (keep like #3 & #4).
5) Can we add the word "VOODOO" in the red band on the hat and give him a little more "rasta" hair?
I like FONT #2 - can we add some red, hyptnotic eyeballs in the "O"s for effect? Also, put a lone bone over the second to last "o" at a 45 degree angle as an accent mark.
Great work!

MUTE DESIGN,
You're spot on with the font styles!
I would like to experiment a little bit w/ the "V" and the "O"s to make the name look less monotonous -hard to do when 4 out of 6 letters is an "O!" Can you make the top of the "V" flare out a little and make the "O"s unique with the futuristic font?
I like the silver body of the text in fonts #3 & #4 - can we add some red in these too.
Thanks,
Surferdude

EL KOOTCHO,
Yep, I'm a bonehead! My changes don't work. Well, one of 'em does. I like the name in the hat - except make it silver or white. Can we go back to the group of 4 once again. Use # 2 but with a green face and one w/ a grey face. Use the less obvious pins like in #3, keep the yellow eyes and just make the pupils red and looking directly forward. Take the red outline out of the hat (end it at the top of the bones). The hat looks cooler w/out the red outline.
Thanks for your patience (too much turkey).

EL KOOTCHO,
NICE JOB!!! You're very close. I'm LEANING TOWARDS GREY BUT IT'S 1:00am and I THINK I'll SLEEP ON IT. I'll let my partner check it out tomorrow too.
The major only thing I'm wondering is if making the eyes a little bigger or different or even adjusting the eyesbrows would help give him a more shocked look - like he saw a ghost - or looked in the mirror! I don't think he needs to look scarier, just more shocked or hypnotized looking, more like a zombie. Check the face from the Voodoo Surf Gods logo (http://www.voodoosurfgods.com/default.htm) as a exanple, Different logo (I like yours much more) but just to give you an idea what I'm talking about - something that would make you chuckle it's so wacky. I'd also be curious if we tried that design for the mouth just for comparision, gave him a few more dreadlocks on the sides. maybe a little dradlock goatee, and perhaps spread the pins out around the face (w/fewer pins too).
Thanks,

For some reason, I can't find the right background for him - don't think I like the bone and not sure about the star. Any ideas? He needs to stand alone separate from the name since he'll be on the other side of the board.

Dynagirl - cool entry - not sure it's quite out there enough. We did like your entry #3 but felt it needed a bit more detail. There have been so many great entries, it's hard to keep track. We're struggling w/this b/c the target market is a tough one - hardcore male surfers 13-25yrs old. Thus, it's got to be edgy yet unique in order to capture their attention. I'm getting another headache thinking about it!
Mark - what about a simple background like a red circle or star? Maybe put a couple simple tribal pattern in it. Just a thought.

An improvment - I'm thinking something even simpler like just a solid red circle for the background, Maybe put the head on a stick (just thought of that), A few simple tribal patterns in black on the red background - but very simple so that it doesn't draw attention away from the head.
I feel like your guy deserves a name - VoodooDude.

It's been driving me nuts because my original model was a shrunken head and the only thing I could think of was it hanging from a string. The stick idea is what I was trying to think of but it would'nt register in my brain. Thanks!

Mark,
We're getting closer to something workable. Love the red background and the tribal symbols you chose. Let's get those pins back in his head too! I don't think the stick should extend beyond the circle so you can cut some of it off. Can you use that same decaying font in the red that you used in the letters in your very first entry (11/16 11:34pm)? Can you make his goatee a liitle longer - rasta dreadlock style - might look good. Let's make the pupils in the eyes red or yellow.
I'm just trying tp think of something to do around the edges of the circle in #1 to make it interesting. Flames? A black or silver tribal design running around the circle? I'm not sure...

I had a quick go - it's a bit basic to what the others are producing, lol

1 on 1 - Reminds me of Hooters. Pretty cool. Separate from this contest I will be purchasing fonts that could be used for Voodoo. They will run vertically up the board. I'm looking for a futuristic, Terminator 2 type font in silver and red. Feel free to experiment. I will be buying these though Palmer.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for your patience. We're close to a decision. Mark, 13 could be your lucky number - it's very close on these 2 designs. But just a few more tweaks (I need to finalize by Monday so the end is near!).
El Kootcho - a few refinements/experiments. Let's go back to your last post. Take out the Ying Yang (I love it, my partner hates it). Let's go back to the pins in the forehead (not the rest of the face) and add a few in the hat. Make the goatee a bit longer w/dreadlocks and make a few of the hair dreadlocks go over the bone so they're more visible. Let's go back to the old eyebrows as well.
I want to try a few variations of the eyes still. Let's try the "vortex" style attached. Let's try white eyeballs, red pupils and red eyeballs, yellow pupils. I feel like the only thing this logo is missing is something "catchy" with the eyes. I want to use this for t-shirts, stickers, etc. so we have to get it right. If you have any suggestions, feel free to experiment. It's sooooo close!!!! Eyes, eyes, eyes. HELP!

Gentlemen,
Thanks. We'll probably want to buy both so don't worry about your work being completely in vain - t shirts, stickers, etc.. But still some more tweaks b/c I can't decide on the winner yet.
El Kootcho
I miss the ying yang but will learn to live without it. However, let's add some more pins to the hat and replace the ying yang w/ a "V."
I also want to do a version w/ a lower profile hat. Same hat just rounded so it's not as big - like the guy in this photo.
I think we're close to solving the eye dilemma. I just think we need to make the eye sockets larger. Larger eye sockers w/larger eyes and pupils. I think I like the white eyeballs and the pupils either black or yellow. Let's give him some bags under his eyes so it looks like he hasn'r slept in a month - do zombie's sleep? One last thing, place the pupils on the left side of the eye so it's looks like the eyes are staring right at you.
Finally, do the "Voodoo" font all in bones in an antique white/yellow. This will need to be on the other side of the board and stand alone. Please make the "D" a little more rounded, less abstract. The bones can be slanted a bit (60 degree angle). The bones should be outlined in red and black so they stand out against a stark white surfboard.

VERY CLOSE TO A WINNER. Love to Voodoo Font. A few minor tweaks (did you really think I wouldn't have a few more!).
I like Font #2 - Let's try a couple variations and hopefully wrap this up. We need more of a red background to make the name stand out against the white board - more like the red around the bone in the head logo. Make the "V" a little bigger and I would like to see how the "o" s looks if the were angled (rotate so the bottom's not flat). Let's also try one w/the "Vortex" eyes in the "O"s for effect.
The end is near...

Ok El Kootcho - let's see the combination - head and name.
Let's take head #1 (white eyes). Make the eyes bloodshot - smaller red pupil. Give him a little more black in the eye sockets around the white eyeballs and a couple more bags under the eyes. Done w/ the head.
Font is better - I like the last one. Make the font just a little bigger and do the Vortex eyes in red and in all 4 "Os" I think the font needs to be a little larger to have the right effect w/the red vortex
Now let's print up 10,000 shirts and flyers - well, not yet. Let's see-
We may have a winner...

Like #1 & # 3 - This guy has a lot of marketing potential. I want to try a few last things.
Take #1 - and change the backround to yellow - it will make the red eyes stand out more
Take # 3 - Let's take out that weathered look in the red background and just keep it red = the weathered look takes away from the cool tribal symbols you added.
I want to add the word "Voodoo Surfboards" to both - use whatever font you want - the name should be w/in the circle and run around the perimeter of the circle. Imagine it on the back of a T-Shirt as a stand alone logo - Awesome!

MARK - Great job!!! - I really like them both - A LOT.
FONT: I thought about it some more and think your last bone font would look even better w/in the logo for "Voodoo". Let's try it. On #1, the word "surfboards would look good in red/back outline and in #2 in silver/black outline, Maybe you can make the circle just a little bigger so the fonts don't tun into the tribal symbols you added - they're too good to hide!
I want to add one more pin to the face - in his left cheek (it looks like he needs a pin on that side of the face!). Let's try a different color in #1 in the "Vortex eye instead of the red/black. Red is fine but maybe yellow instead of the black would make it stand out more. On #2, the eyes are perfect except add a little dot of yellow to the pupil (black/yellow). Done.
Besides those tweaks, the only thing left that I'm not sure about is the edges of the circle. I feel it needs a little something to make it stand out. It looks too much like a bottle cap right now. I'm not sure if it looked like a sun, a star - or even just a tribal pattern around the edges would do the trick. Something. Any ideas?
I'm 95% there on the design...this has lots of marketing possibilities!

NICE - EL KOOTCH.
Do me a favor - on #1 - add silver in the gap between the bone and the head, and the opposite in #2 so it all flows.
On #1, make the "V" bone in the hat silver nad make it red in #2.
The rope in #1 should be silver and in #2 red.
Could you add one more pin to the center of the forehead?
Just a little more black edging around the big bone "V" for effect.
Finally, if there is any brighter red for the font, let's give it a try.
Thanks.

The final head design should be your last post #2 - the ony change is that I want the small bones on the hat in red, not silver. Could you also do the bone font (11/30 - 11:24pm post) for the name in silver like in the head logo? Please email to mcy968@yahoo.com and myomazzosr@brk.photronics.com
Can you put the head and the font (w/out head) in separate files please. We may need them on different sides of the board.
