Hello everyone,
Just wondering. I use to have my pick of fonts (worked for a company that had Font Folio), but have since left. They, unfortunately, used only PC's - I myself have a MAC. Can anyone give me insight/help on where they get their fonts? Is it worth going to the free fonts sites to download?
I appreciate anyones input.
Thank you,
Jayson

My favorite is http://www.dafont.com I like how you are able to put the name of the company you are doing a logo for and it shows you what their name will look like in that particular font. Very cool B)

Downloading the free fonts the way to go (Especially when you dont have the 10k for Font Folio) ? I never knew how much I would miss that luxury.

Palmer,
I see on the dafonts site they group the PC download with MAC OSX. I have heard the myth that PC fonts will work with MAC OSX is this true? Could I be in a dream?

I usually go to www.1001freefonts.com ... It's not that user-friendly, but there are some interesting fonts there. I believe they have Mac fonts also.
The only problem with the free fonts is that sometimes they are badly coded and it may crush the program or corrupt your files (in Illustrator - happens all the time with TTF fonts), without even speaking of sometimes realy harshly drawn shapes, incoherent proportions and buggy kerning tables.

Not sure about that but we have enough designers here using the Mac that they should be able to answer.

One of the good things about it is that it's FAST.

I own an older version of Font Folio but I will also use dafont. Never had a crashing problem. I don't care that they are truetype fonts since I always convert to outlines before sending the completed logo file.

Thank you everyone!!!
J-design is it as simple as just dropping the PC fonts into your Mac fonts folder?

Well, obviously, Outline Fonts is a good idea before sending a file somewhere. But I've had numerous problems with Illustrator (I have 9.0.2) handling custom TTF fonts.
Usually, it comes up as the famous "Offending Operator" when opening a problematic file. It also dislikes fonts with EastEuropean scripting (usually - erroneous) and shovel them under a horizontal line at the end of the Fonts list in the Character palette. Such fonts usually either don't appear on screen or appear as some other fontface. All these bugs are described and re-described by huge amount of users (of both AI9 and AI10) on Adobe Illustrator forums. The bugs are "work-aroundable", but nevertheless are... err... buggy :)
All said refers only to Adobe Illustrator, I haven't seen any other program to behave in a similar way, maybe just because I usually don't use anything aside of the AI+PS tandem ;)
And after all, I use lots of free fonts, so all these are just collateral effects :)
