(Edit: Deadline is Wednesday, Dec 3. -- Pushed out a few days)
(Edit: See the following URL for final comments and guidelines:
http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...indpost&p=33239 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=2050&view=findpost&p=33239) )
Our web development firm, formerly "ThreeRing Consulting, Inc." is currently in the process of renaming and rebranding. We've never really been happy with our original name and identity, and so to celebrate the end of our first year in business, we're starting our identity from scratch.
Our new name is going to be "Square Two." The name is derived from the common saying "back to square one" -- I.e., we represent its counterpart of "forward to Square Two!" (2square, I promise we didn't base it on your nick!) ;-)
We'd prefer a logo that conveys, to some extent, the meaning of the name. I think most people will get it, but for those that don't, a visual clue might help.
A bit about our company:
We specialize in non-flashy web development -- I.e., we're native web developers, rather than graphic designers or animators who got into the web arena (hence our need for graphic designers to work on our logo!). Our designs are clean, pure, and focused on content rather than graphics. We also do plenty of back-end development (database-driven systems, etc.) Our target market is local service-based businesses (including non-profits and individuals).
The perfect logo would meet the following criteria:
- Conveys (overtly, or on a more subtle level) the meaning of our name.
- Is clean and clear, much like our web design.
- Will work well on the web, as well as business cards, stationery, etc.
- Uses a sans-serif or slab-serif typeface
- Is based around a single dominant color (probably green or red) (see http://www.threering.net for our current green -- we wouldn't mind continuing with that color)
Ground rules:
- No swooshes
- No swirls
- None of the other logo cliches. :-)
I've collected some samples that I think represent my taste in logo design. I don't necessarily think these are all perfect, nor do I want our logo to look like them -- but they represent some of the colors, shapes, and typography that I can visualize ours having:
http://www.threering.net/rebrand/logos.html
Other than that, I don't have any specific notions about what imagery our logo should have. Be creative! There's a tremendous amount of talent available here, so lets see what you guys come up with!
(I understand that EPS is the standard format for these things -- is that right? If so, I'd prefer them in that format as opposed to .GIF or .JPG)
Thanks everyone! I look forward to your entries!

Wow, that was fast!
Good things:
- Colors (bold, thick black)
- Shape (simple, strong)
Maybe not so much:
- Superscripted '2' (I think the "squared" notion might to be obvious -- I'd prefer to lean way from that)
- Typeface on the '2' -- maybe too "fun"? (something more conservative maybe?)
Excellent first post! Thanks!

Not bad. I think that your first set was closer to what we're looking for, though. I think that a two-dimensional logo might better convey the clean simplicity that we're going for. (I could be mistaken, though!) :-)
JamesAZ

Also, just a side note: I think we want to steer away from blue, since it's so overused in the tech industry. I'm open to just about any other colors, though!

1on1, I like the notion -- but it seems to be going backwards. Maybe we can have the dark square on the left side?
ElKootcho: I like the top row (orange, green, red) of your 1:01pm post. The "Square" typeface seems a bit plain -- Arial? -- maybe a similar but less common sans-serif? For your 1:40pm post, I like the "2", but the "square" typeface seems a bit more informal (and perhaps a bit more black) than we were going for. Maybe a different typeface there?
dynagirl: I like the arrow idea, but that attempt seems a bit...hmmm...not sure I can put my finger on it. Not quite there, I guess.
JamesAZ
11-22-2003, 12:28 PM
Thanks, 1on1. Could we try some different typefaces? The "Square" one seems a bit too classical, and the "2" perhaps a bit too techie.
JamesAZ

ElKootcho, could I see your first batch again, but this time with "Square" on top and the "2" in the bottom corner?

beatz: I like the top row of your post. I also like the different-colored-Q idea. Not so sure about the form of the number 2, but I think you're on a good track.
1on1: Getting closer. I like both "Square" fonts. The 2s seem a bit plain. I'd like a simple font, but perhaps not as geometric as your second one.
Let me have a little of this fun!

pennyln: nice work. :-) I like the top right and the one below it. Not so sure about the S-as-2 theme, but it's a clever idea. Might work better with a different typeface?

Eagle: Nice, but too soft and rounded, I think. There's not much "squareness" to it.
Pennyln: I'm still not sure about the S-as-2 thing. I'm still liking your first post, middle, right side the best so far.

By the way, serifs aren't forbidden -- as long as they look okay at small sizes (e.g., when pixellized)
Here are some typeface ideas for you guys to get an idea of the sorts of fonts we'd like to see:

Two squares overlaped generates the number 2. starting from the left to right, it brings you from square 1 to square 2.

ElKootcho - Nov 24 2003, 01:16 AM
I like the changes. "Square" seems a bit large now. I think I prefer the version with the red background. Don't care much for the bottom two.
ElKootcho - Nov 24 2003, 01:40 AM
I like this idea. I'm not sold on these particular versions, but let's play with this idea a bit and see where it goes.
ElKootcho - Nov 24 2003, 02:00 AM
Nah.
dynagirl - Nov 24 2003, 03:32 AM
#4 looks nice, but doesn't do anything special for me. #5 looks like it's going to slide off the edge. :-) Of the others, I think D is the closest. The others seem to dark and black-dominant.
1on1 - Nov 24 2003, 04:23 AM
Nah.
2square - Nov 24 2003, 05:47 AM
I think the bottom does look a bit odd. I've squinted for a few minutes trying to "get it", but it's not clicking.
MUTE DESIGN - Nov 24 2003, 09:53 AM
Nice logos, but they don't quite fit our identity. Too young, too hip, too orange.
Huhhso - Nov 24 2003, 02:35 PM
I really like the ideas of the left column, though maybe without the slogan. Would you experiment with these a bit?
hheine - Nov 24 2003, 03:06 PM
Nah.
pennyln - Nov 24 2003, 03:17 PM
On the top four, could we see if there's any kind of way to better integrate the 2 into the logo? It seems to be just hanging out there. On the bottom ones, they still seem a bit more "fun" and "friendly" than we're looking for. That's not bad, it just doesn't seem to fit us right.
graphxguy - Nov 24 2003, 03:54 PM
I like these. The color's not quite right (we're looking for a bolder red), but I like the idea behind it. Could we try it with some different typefaces (see my previous post with some typeface links for ideas).

UPDATE:
So far, I think the logo that comes closest to being on top in this competition is this one:
http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...=60&#entry31801 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=2050&st=60&#entry31801)
(second one down, on the left)
Though I'd prefer it without the slogan, I think this one best captures the "simple but professional" look that we're trying to go for, at least of what I've seen so far -- though I have seen some other good contenders, and indicated in my previous batch of comments.

Hey everyone! Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!
Here are my comments on the posts since I responded to the last batch:
dynagirl - Nov 25 2003, 05:15 PM
Interesting concepts. Can I see some additional variations? Also, the typography doesn't seem quite right, but I'm not sure why.
ElKootcho - Nov 26 2003, 01:02 AM
I like the red #17, but the color doesn't seem quite right. Also, is there any way to spice it up a bit? Something to make it more interesting. I know I asked for simple -- maybe not quite so simple. :) #18 and #19 are nice, but they don't seem like a good fit.
dynagirl - Nov 26 2003, 01:27 AM
I like C, but maybe with some different typography. The font seems a bit too art deco for my tastes. :)
beatz - Nov 26 2003, 06:06 AM
Looking better. Good use of whitespace. They seem a bit unbalanced on the bottom, though, as if they're going to tip over. Not sure if we need the 2 and the "two" both -- maybe just one?
MUTE DESIGN - Nov 26 2003, 09:18 AM
I like the work, but I don't think it fits the look we're seeking. The black makes them seem a bit too dark, and the fonts seem a bit too "fun."
huhhso - Nov 26 2003, 10:46 AM
I like #2 and #5 the best. I think #2 would look good with #5's font, by the way. :-) I think my main concern with these is the negative space. It makes perfect sense when you visualize the white square, but when you just look at the red piece, it's an odd, pointy shape at a sort of awkward angle. I really like the idea, though -- can you play with it and see if we can refine that particular shape?
disturbReality - Nov 26 2003, 06:50 PM
Nice work, but it doesn't quite fit the look we're going for. Seems a bit more cartoony than I'd like, you know?
Everyone -- you're doing great work, and I appreciate the revisions. Also, please feel more than free to try out any new ideas you might have. I'm not sold completely on anything I've seen just yet, so there's still an opportunity to jump in and steal the show! :-)
Thanks all,

Quick note: Because we neglected to factor Thanksgiving into our timeline (you guys are probably all still half-asleep because of the Turkey!), and also because we haven't seen anything that's quite right, we've decided to push the deadline out until Wednesday.
The contest is still wide open, guys! Go for it!

Everyone,
I appreciate all the contributions that have been made. I know it's been difficult because I haven't had a clear idea of what the final should look like. I think I'm starting to see it now, though.
Here is what I think that the winning logo should have. I hope everyone will take advantage of these parameters to put together a few final entries for this contest.
1. The words "Square Two"
2. No numeral "2"
3. A single square shape (I.e., not two or three squares)
4. Some combination of black, white, and pure red. (Edit: Pink for lighting/shading effects is okay too.)
5. No circles or curves (text doesn't count, of course)
6. Preferrably a slab-serif typeface such as Rockwell (see http://www.threering.net/ for an example)
7. No motto.
8. Overall, the appearance should be simple, strong, reliable, and trustworthy. It shouldn't appear comical, fun, casual, old-fashioned, etc.
I hope this helps give everyone some good guidance for the final push. Thanks everyone!!!!

Wow, that last set of guidelines really got things hopping! I wish I'd known earlier! :-)
I'll give some individual comments tomorrow morning but for now I'll just say that these are looking a lot closer to what we're going for.
Also, I liked Huhhso's "angled square" idea (though maybe without the cutout):
http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...indpost&p=32211 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=2050&view=findpost&p=32211)
Maybe we could see something like "Square" and then "Two" in an angled red box, something like that?
Great work guys! Glad to see that this thread got a jumpstart!
Here are some ideas per your requests...

Mark, I kinda like this one. Can I see some variations of it, please? (Particularly, I'd like to see something with a square instead of a cube)
In fact, it could probably even do without the little guy. It's the box that looks good more so than the figure...
Thanks!

hheine,
The post you made with the stationery I think is *very* close. I really liked the look. (I don't like the perspective one as much.)
I think my concern is the size of the "two" -- I'd prefer it to match the rest of the text.

Eagle - Nov 30 2003, 05:20 PM
Attractive, but a bit too simple. I like the "plain red square" idea, though I think I better like some of the ones I've seen where it's at an angle, or that use black/pink for clean lighting effects.
markbeaudry - Nov 30 2003, 05:23 PM
Good ideas, but not quite what I'm looking for. I think I'd prefer to leave the text unmanipulated.
disturbReality - Nov 30 2003, 05:35 PM
Looks okay, but not sure if I like the typeface or the gradient.
Eagle - Nov 30 2003, 05:56 PM
Not bad, but still a bit too simple.
markbeaudry - Nov 30 2003, 06:06 PM
Not sure about the typeface. :-)
disturbReality - Nov 30 2003, 06:28 PM
I think that the typography doesn't quite fit the look I've been describing. Seems too hip, too casual.
markbeaudry - Nov 30 2003, 08:52 PM
BEAUTIFUL logo -- the only reason I don't jump on this one is the implication that we're square two...of NINE. Makes us seem a bit inadequate. :-)
disturbReality - Nov 30 2003, 09:11 PM
Typography and gradients again.
markbeaudry - Nov 30 2003, 09:15 PM
Love this logo - not so much because of the guy or the cube, but more because of the typography and lighting effects.
pennyln - Nov 30 2003, 09:16 PM
I think I'm drifting away from the manipulated text idea. The bottom ones are okay, but a bit lackluster. Good effort, though!
pennyln - Nov 30 2003, 09:17 PM
Again, good effort, but as with Eagle's, I think they're a bit simpler than we're looking for (though I know you were just doing what I had described!). I'd like to see something with some subtle interesting bits, like the black/pink lighting effects, or square at an angle.
disturbReality - Nov 30 2003, 09:28 PM
I appreciate the time and effort, but it's the typography and gradients again. :-)
Palmer - Nov 30 2003, 10:07 PM
I like the idea, but it seems a bit more "fun" than I'm looking for. Also, I'd prefer to see a single square instead of two.
hheine - Nov 30 2003, 11:35 PM
Love the bottom left, but "two" seems too small.
ElKootcho - Nov 30 2003, 11:45 PM
Good attempt. Looks like the "two" is sliding off the edge, though?
hheine - Dec 1 2003, 02:27 AM
Closer, but "two" still too small (prefer to have it match "square"). Also, the kerning seems a bit awkward (maybe it's just me?). LOVE the stationery, by the way.
hheine - Dec 1 2003, 02:34 AM
Don't care so much for the perspective version, though I'm warming up to it. Can I see it with an adjusted "two" (and maybe the perspective square on the stationery) as well?
2square - Dec 1 2003, 02:56 AM
Not bad, but please seem my various notes about colors. :-)

All - I'd like to try to avoid duplicating this logo from a logo design tutorial:
http://www.webreference.com/dlab/9811/reused.html :-)
markbeaudry - Dec 1 2003, 10:20 AM
I like the ideas -- clean but handsome. The shadow on some of them seems to be a bit disconnected from the square, though. (Maybe it's my imagination?) I'd be interested in seeing some other square positions, with the shadows aligned under them.
beatz - Dec 1 2003, 10:36 AM
Good attempts, but I think I'm liking some of the more recent designs people have been posting better. Maybe you can try something in that direction?
pennyln - Dec 1 2003, 10:40 AM
Not bad, but I'd prefer to avoid gradients if possible.
JamesAZ
12-01-2003, 11:27 AM
Mark, I like the perspective of the first one. Could we do something like that, but have the shadow a bit more compressed? (I.e., so that it looks more like a big red square with a shadow, rather than a red square and a gray square)

MUCH closer. Some additional requests:
- Could you make the text less "stretchy"? (See Mark's recent posts for a good example of how I'd like to see the text.)
- Could you give the "two" a bit more space? Seems cramped in the box.
- Could you lop off the "TM" (not sure we need it yet)
- On the stationery, could you show me what it would look like to mix-and-match the perspective and non-perspective squares (I.e., one in the logo, the other in the watermark)?
I think we're getting close here! :-)

I took it´s natural spacement and adjusted it proportionally. Looks good !
- Could you give the "two" a bit more space? Seems cramped in the box.
Made the square 6 % larger to not loose "square" and "two" proportionality relation.

Done !

I'm going to check back in with my people and get some feedback from them. I'll get you some more detailed comments tomorrow morning.
In the meantime:
HHeine: Text still seems a bit "stretchy" (I'd prefer it to look more block-like), and the "two" still seems to be in a smaller font size than the "square"...
Mark: I like this revision, though it seems a bit too "perspectivy" (can we straighten it out a bit?), and the shadow still doesn't seem to quite match.
JamesAZ
12-01-2003, 02:46 PM
disturbReality: They look okay, but the rounded edges and fuzzy (gradient) drop shadow lack some of the snap of the sharper, squarer images. Good try, though!

HHeine: It seems like the letters are still a bit fat, and they're squashing together moreso now than in your previous versions. If you compare your text side-by-side with Mark's, I think you'll see what I'm talking about. (The "two" is looking better in size, though!)

JamesAZ,
When is it considering copying from each other? I understand that you want a red square on an angle with a certain type of font, etc. but now "drop shadows" seem to be borrowed.
This contest is getting way out of hand and I think I will bow out now! :sideways:
No offence, (and I'm not blaming any of the artists' here) but I think it would've been much easier to pick a winner and have them make tweaks then have them continue to take different elements from other artists.
JamesAZ

The Winner: HHeine! (By a nose!)
Congratulations!
I still have some revision requests, but after talking it over with my crew, we've determined that he had found the path we wanted to follow.
Mark, you were definitely a very close runner up. I apologize for how similar things were getting near the end, and I respect your decision to bow out. I wondered if I should have picked someone earlier, but it wasn't until very recently that we decided on HHeine's design.
Thanks everyone, for your hard work and participation. There was some great work done in this contest, and I wish you all success in your other projects.
