NOTE: See bottom of this post for important images relevant to the contest.
Hey guys!
First off, please call me Tom :).
I'm not sure how many of you might remember me, but a few years back I was a pretty active template designer at DesignOutpost. I still love design, but I gave up freelancing (including design contests) a while back, in order to pursue my own entrepreneurial ventures. One of these was a site called P S D F A N (http://www.psdfan.com).*
*Excuse some of the strange wording for links in this post, I don't want to have my audience finding details of this contest via Google as the launch isn't ready yet!
Anyway, P S D F A N is now expanding to a network of related sister-sites, which will be under the umbrella site of F A N E X T R A.
This will include:
P S D F A N
CodingFan
BlogsFan
The F A N E X T R A launch is fast approaching, and early reveals of the new site design have been very positive. However, the one thing bugging people has been the logo, as it's not memorable or creative enough. I want everything to be top-notch for this new site, so for the first time ever will not be designing the logo myself!
That's where you guys come in! I've always been impressed with the talent here, and really want a set of logos to reflect the new direction of the network.
Here are the specifics of what I need:
A logo for F A N E X T R A (the main network site).
Logos for each of the sister sites (P S D F A N, CodingFan, and BlogsFan).
I must stress that these won't be different logos as such. It will be the exact same logo, just with color variations. Fonts and design will be the same across all logos, so please don't think I'm trying to take liberties with my budget. You can see the current logos and what I mean below:
http://www.pushstandards.com/designs/designoutpost1.jpg
I'm actually pretty happy to have the sister site variations done in the revisions forum, I just need to get the main network logo looking good within this part of the contest.
On a personal note:
I'm a designer myself, and I've worked at these very forums. Therefore I will be a good client to work with in terms of providing feedback and helping your designs to progress. Please if you're interested help shape a logo for what could be a very large design network.
Helpful Details
Here goes the questionnaire:
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
F A N E X T R A (without spaces). This doesn't necessarily HAVE to be uppercase, but it seems to have worked quite well so far.
What type of product or service do you offer?
We are a network of design/development/blogging related blogs. The main network site (F A N E X T R A) is a hub to promote the networks membership option, as well as the network blogs, a community forum etc...
How long have you been in business?
Just over 2 years
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
In expanding P S D F A N to a full network I hope to take things to the 'next level'. Rather than simply being a successful design blog, I want the network to become a highly profitable business, as well as allow for cross-pollination between a series of very popular and educational blogs.
What are your long term goals?
To become one of the largest design networks in the world.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
Sept 5th (I'd really like to meet this deadline, but it can be extended if absolutely required).
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
A difficult question. Mainly 18-30, very interested in design/coding/blogging. Tech savvy. Highly creative. Interested in learning.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
No one in terms of the 'type' of audience, I just want to expand the current audience.
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
In keeping with our expansion to a more serious business model and larger network, the logo must be clean and professional. However, I'd like to strike a balance between CREATIVITY and PROFESSIONALISM. Our audience surveys have shown that the current logo is unpopular due to being too faceless, uncreative and corporate. I definitely want a highly professional, clean logo to fit with our new image, but also want some creative flair in order to cater for our audience of designers and creatives. Simply put - something that sets us apart!
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
If you look over the image of our current logos above you can see the color-schemes I'm after. The most flexible of these is the main network logo (F A N E X T R A). I wanted a more neutral color for the main network site, as it should encapsulate the multi-colored series of blogs that will comprise the network.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
I actually don't - this is why I struggled to come up with a logo myself. I'm very open to ideas with this one. I want to portray creativity and learning. However, it must be fairly broad, as the logo must apply to all current and future network blogs, covering such topics as Photoshop, coding, blogging, photography etc...
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
This was mainly covered in my above answers, but a fusion of professionalism and creativity. I'm trying to portray the network as professional, but at the same time very approachable. We're not some organization out to take your money, but a series of blogs built from the ground up by one person (me), and as such I have personal connections to this network.
What is your tagline or slogan?
We won't have one associated with the logo, but the network page title will likely read something like 'Taking your learning to the next level'. (probably something more creative/original though!)
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
We're very professional, yet fun, creative and personable.
Where will your new logo be used?
All across the main network site, and the color variants will be uses across the various network blogs.
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
Our main competitor is T U T S P L U S . C O M (sorry, you'll need to type this in yourself)
I like their logo for the main part, but it's not that interesting. It's bold, and conveys a 'fun' attitude through their font choice. However, it's not exactly memorable, more stable and reliable. I'd like something more memorable and interesting, yet still clean and professional.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
We're mores business orientated than our smaller competitors, and more friendly/personal than our larger competitors. As I'm really launching this network alone, it gives me a personal edge. Unlike larger networks, I personally respond to all emails, blog comments etc... I like to think that I'm combining my personal brand as a known designer, with the benefits of a reliable business organization.
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Awesome resources for creative people.

Btw I forgot to mention - the image part of the logo should sit to the left of the logo text. No vertical logos please :)
Please let me know if you need any further info btw. I'm really keen to get lots of great entries to this contest!

Thanks for opening up this one NHR! :)
As I said in my original post, I'm keen to provide as detailed feedback as I possible can. I really appreciate you taking the time to create your logo, but I'll just go over some of the strengths/weaknesses from my perspective:
Strengths:
- I like how you tried the capture the multiplicity of a network. Whilst the swooshes aren't quite right the idea of multiple aspects orbiting a center point is interesting.
- I actually really like the idea of a triangle or pyramid. It seems to provide a really solid center point, that sums up the idea of a 'network'. I especially like how you've used slightly curved edges for the triangle, straight edges would look too boring I think.
Weaknesses:
- It's too similar to the current logo, which as I mentioned is the main thing wrong with my current design. I'm trying to get away from the 'faceless' 'corporate' type image, and the swooshes in particular are just too cliche for me.
- The same goes for the font. It's a little cliche corporate. I definitely want something professional, but perhaps with a more web 2.0 (I hate that term), fun twist to it. Still clean and professional, but something that has a more personal appeal to it.
- I think it needs more color (at least in the image part of the logo). The colour will be the main thing distinguishing the sister sites from one another, so just having the swooshes as different colors probably wont' be clear enough (particularly when working with smaller thumbnails).
So in summary:
- Not quite along the right lines, but a good effort. The triangle/circle is definitely appealing (although I don't know if these alone would be too basic), but the swooshes are not. I need to get away from the corporate, faceless logo we currently have and get something with a fun, unique, memorable edge, whilst still being professional.
I'll just link to a few logos that I like. Obviously these shouldn't be ripped off, but I'll just go over what I like about each one, and hopefully this may let you know what I'm after a bit more:
http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/110003
This logo is obviously a little specific for a network containing a variety of sites. However, I love the fun, clean image. It's fairly simple, get sums up the creativity that I'm after.
http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/104130
Kinda far from what I'm after, but again, I like the clean vector style of this design. It seems to fit well with my layout.
http://veerle.duoh.com/
I'm not exactly sure how a logo like this could work for the colour-coded sister sites, but for the main network so I like the idea of combining abstract shapes to represent the various sides of the network. This logo does it very creatively (unlike my attempt).
http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/96816
Very cool image part of the logo. It's simple, yet sleek and creative. As I mentioned with NHRs design I like the use of curved shapes, as it seems to capture the fun/creative feel I'm after. I also like the font used in this logo. It's professional and clean, yet with a touch of creativity. Not too corporate at all.
Thanks again for a good start NHR! Please let me know if you have any questions about my feedback, and I hope that you'll consider posting again.
Everyone else: I hope that others will consider entering as well, I'd love to see multiple ideas here :).

Hey guys!
Thanks for both your logos. Both have their strengths, but I'm not sure either are quite on the mark. To try and help I'll just go over the pros and cons of each logo from my perspective. I hope this helps :).
Xpressions:
Pros:
- I really like the blue you're using. I think it's great that you've fit in with the site's color-scheme, but made it even lighter/fresher. It compliments the main layout well.
- I like the semi-vector looking approach you've taken for the main shape (the blue area). It's got the kind of polish that I'm looking for.
Cons:
- I'm not really a fan of the font used. It needs something bolder.
- Network shouldn't be bigger than 'FanExtra'. Also I think FanExtra should be in capitals (FANEXTRA). See the current logo. Whilst I don't like it all that much, I'd like to retain the positioning of the image to the left, then FANEXTRA in capitals and the NETWORK text below the main text.
- I'm not a huge fan of the bubble effect. Also whilst the construction of the 'F' is creative, I need something that will work for the sister sites too. The logo can't be that specific to the main network site, as the logo must be able to simply change color and apply to each network blog.
- Whilst I said I like the vector style polish of the blue shape, I don't think it would suffice on it's own as a logo image. I like it's style, but feel there can be a more pertinent shape for the network. I need something that evokes the content of the network, as well as it's core values.
NHR:
Pros:
- I like your positioning of the image to the left, as well as your text size/positioning.
- I like how you're trying to capture the multiplicity of the network in your image.
Cons:
- The colors are way too dull, and need to match the main network site (see my comments on Xpressions design)
- I'm not really a fan of this font either. It's still too corporate, and looks like it might apply to some multi-million faceless company, rather than a set of creative blogs. I'd really like a balance between creative and professional (e.g.: http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/96816)
- I'm not loving the logo shape. The idea behind it is good, but it's a little too harsh. Remember I mentioned liking curved lines. This feels more like a large hosting company logo (think: Rackfast) to me.
I hope my comments are helpful. I really appreciate your efforts so far, and I'm sure I'll find something that really grabs my eye. Please let me know if anything needs clarifying :).

I'm not sure. I did look around for rules on this and couldn't find anything. And the client did mention in the brief that he wouldn't mind seeing what the logo would look like on those two sites (he provided links to the JPEG screen captures of both sites.
If a mod would look into this, that would be good....certainly don't want to break any rules.
Thanks.

I wasn't sure about the logo placement rules, although I'm doing it myself with each logo just to get a better idea.
Anyway, thanks for your entry Graphxguy!
Here is my feedback:
Strengths:
- I like how you've captured the network idea through a variety of colors, and your colors seem to work well together.
- With the logo image I like the way the elements seem to 'fuse' together to some degree.
Weaknesses:
- That being said, I feel like your logo isn't that unique. It's like uses of standard swooshes - arrows just seem fairly over-done, and therefore lack the sense of creativity and personality that I'm trying to convey.
- Again the font isn't really right, (please see examples below)
- I'd really like to see something using more rounded/curved shapes that's softer on the eyes. The arrows in your design feel a little jagged and harsh. (again see examples below for good images)
I just want to stress to all designers, the examples below really convey EXACTLY the kind of look I'm after. Slightly chunky, creative, yet still professional fonts, combined with creative, clean vector image designs (that avoid over-used designs such as arrows and swooshes):

Tom,
Thanks for the feedback. However they are not arrows. Its supposed to be a 3D design representing the sides of a box.....with the sides representing a network coming together. And the design is meant to succeed whether you take a bottom up view or top down view. Although, I guess if you didn't recognize it, then it doesn't work.
Design #2 coming up......
Thanks.

Thanks for the new entries guys, these are getting much closer to what I had in mind! :)
I'll just go through and give everyone feedback...
Graphxguy: Yeah, I did see the box design, but too be totally honest it's just not quite what I'm after (see previous comments). I look forward to your second entry :).
NHR: This is definitely heading in the right direction. I like how it's more fluid - curved lines, abstract shapes etc... It feels less rigid and corporate for sure. I'm not sure why, but it's not quite right for me though. I'm not saying to scrap this idea, because I really like it. However, it lacks the extra 'wow' factor I'm after. I think possibly it's just a little flat, so I'd love to see some gradients or additional details added in. If you look at the examples below:
http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/68840
http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/57594
They're VERY simple images, but the gradients add a lot of depth.
As for the font, it's more in the right direction (less corporate), but I'm not a huge fan. It kind of reminds me of Impact. I feel like the example below is nearest to what would work best with your logo:
http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/95379
Great job though, I hope you'll keep going with it :).
Platre: Thanks so much for throwing your hat into the ring :). I like your entry a whole lot. The image part is very close to what I'm after. It conveys the idea of a network well, whilst combining great colors and clean vector design mixed with gradients.I'm not 100% on the light gray circle behind the logo image. Could I see what it looks like without this please.
I don't love the font choice, although I like how you've made 'EXTRA' bold to make it distinct from FAN. The font is bad, but I'd prefer something similarly professional, but perhaps with a few subtle curves. Also I think the text is too light. I'd like to see it with a darker gray please.
I really like the colors of your logo, they're easy on the eyes and really compliment each other. However, they need to be a little closer to the color-schemes of the network websites. I actually really like the idea of the logo being a bit lighter than the main site color-scheme as it stands out and looks fresh. However, it should be a lighter version of the same kind of color. The blue in your logo fits really well with this design:
http://pushstandards.com/designs/designoutpost2.jpg
The green however, is a different kind of green from this:
http://pushstandards.com/designs/designoutpost3.jpg
Could I see the hue changed a bit to fit this design. Like I said though, I still like the idea of it being lighter than this site's design, but it does need to be a more similar hue.
The teal and yellow kind of work right now, and open up options for future sister sites. However, the pink needs to be red, and I can't imagine having a bright pink blog design for this field :).
Thanks again for the awesome entries so far, I can't wait to see how this contest progresses!

BrunoCalvin: Thanks for your entry. Definitely not too late, this contest still has a couple of days left, and if needed I'll extend the final deadline by a small amount.
Here's some feedback on your logo:
I like how you tried to capture the 'F' of FanExtra. However, I only noticed this on a second look. I do like this kind of abstract take on things, but I don't think it will be easy to apply to all network blogs. For example an 'F' themed logo might not work with 'PSDFAN'.
Generally I'm not sure the logo is working for me. I want to be constructive though, as I really appreciate your effort. Despite the abstract 'F' shape being constructed, the logo feels more like a general 'swoosh+ball' combo, that seems a little dated and over-used. Granted, it's not quite a standard swoosh, but it still has that feel to it.
I have to stress that the image part of the logo should go to the left of the text, and not above it. Also the fanextra text should be in capitals. I like how you made 'extra' bold though, as it allows it to be distinguished for 'fan'.
I don't think the font is quite right, although it's not bad. It may work better in capitals, and definitely has potential.
I hope that you'll consider another entry :)

Hi Tom, thank you for your feedbacks =)
I'm making the modifications for the colors and font.
The red now replaces the pink, but I also propose you to replace the teal by purple or other strong color, because I think that it doesn't contrast enough between green and blue as the red does between blue and yellow.
What do you think?
I'm submitting other variations shortly...

Platre: This is looking very very cool! :)
The colors in Version 6 are spot on, the green matches PSDFAN much better than before. My favorite is definitely the second logo of Version 4 (without a ball, but with the purple instead of the teal). I don't really have any suggestions for the image part of this logo as I like it so much. However, the font is still throwing things off for me. I'd love to see some awesome fonts integrated now.
Artemii: I like some of the ideas that have gone into this logo, but personally I don't find it all that easy on the eyes. I really don't like the black, and Bevel effect on the arrows seems clunky. I'd like to see this logo without the arrows (just the curved, abstract shape behind), and without any black filling the gaps in the image. I also need at least 5 different colors to represent the network sites (green, blue, red, and probably purple and one other color).
The logo text should be in capitals, and positioned to the right of the image, not below it.
So right now, I'm not liking it hugely, but I feel with the changes laid out above it could certainly have potential.

Thank you for the great feedback.
Here is another version, loosely relating back to the original. I have modified the shape a bit, removed the "balls" and tried to create that "look" you keep referencing in your feedback. The main icon can be in full color and the divisions can use one of the colors in different hues, like the blue one. Looking forward to your feedback.

Thanks for all the new entries and revisions everyone! :)
Here's my feedback. I'm afraid I'm struggling with internet out here, so will have to be fairly rushed with this post. However, I REALLY appreciate everyone's efforts, and will try to cover everything I like/dislike about the designs.
Xpressions: Definitely a step in the right direction! I like the idea behind this logo, and it looks 'cool', but personally I find it a bit busy. The overlapping shapes combined with overlaps of opacities just seems a bit much. I prefer the solid version (second one down) to the top version.
The image part of the logo feels too big in relation to the text. I'd like to see this at around 70% of it's current size. The logo font is close, but it would be interesting to see some variations, possibly closer to the font examples I provided.
BlueCherryGraphics: I like the idea of overlapping the colors, but visually it's not quite working for me. Similarly to Xpressions design it feels overly busy. I prefer the solid color look, and the colors being more distinct. Right now it makes me think of a kaleidoscope, and instead of feeling solid, and calming, is a little uncomfortable and confusing for me. The font is interesting. I'm not 100% sure about it, but it's intriguing. The text needs to be in capitals though, and have the word 'NETWORK' beneath it.
Artemii: Interesting effort, and has potential. Rather than go over what I like about the logo it might be more constructive to discuss what isn't working for me. Like some of the other logos the lower opacity look isn't working for me, and the whole thing feels too busy. The colors need to be bolder, and more separate. However, that being said, the image shape itself has potential for sure! The font used is too boring in my opinion, and needs to be more similar to the examples I've provided. Also the text color should be very dark gray.
NHR: Nice revisions, but for some reason this logo feels a bit muted in terms of color. I think the colors need to be much bolder, and really pop. Right now it feels like you've toned down the colors. The shape definitely has potential, but the font throws off the whole design, it's really not working for me. Also the text should be a darker gray. See examples provided for font examples.
Thanks everyone! We're almost there :).

Everyone: Could people let me know if they're working on revisions. I'll select a winner tomorrow so want to give everyone a chance to submit revisions. I have to stress that the font is something that's not been right for me so far. If everyone refers to my provided examples, as well as the current logo (I like the font, just not the image) this should give a good idea of what I'm after.

NHR: I'd also really like to see at least one single color version so I can see how the logo will look for the sister sites part of this project. Thanks. :)

Thanks for the revisions Xpressions! It's the final day, so I won't give any more feedback, but my favorite of yours is Version 4 :).
Everyone else: Are there more revisions coming? I haven't heard from some of you in quite a while.
NHR: I'd also really like to see at least one single color version so I can see how the logo will look for the sister sites part of this project. Thanks. :)
Of course:

I am not sure what I am doing wrong with font choice? All they are sans, bold and very similar with suggested...
However, this is one more different font suggestion for you.

Contest Over!
You don't know how difficult you guys made this for me to choose!
In the end I narrowed it down to NHR and Platre. Both designs really stood out for me, and I even hosted a big private poll with my visitors to choose.
Ultimately Platre's design stood out just that little bit more, as being a slightly more unique, bold shape. However, NHR's was also very popular.
NHR: Thanks so much for your hard work on this contest. Your last revision was especially awesome, with that single color option looking very cool indeed.
Platre: Congratulations! I really like your logo too, although I badly need to get some work done with the font. It would be very good to hear back from you on that.
I like the look of the bold version of this font, although I can't download it to try out next to the logos as I'm on a Mac: http://www.campivisivi.net/titillium/?page_id=2
I'd really like to get to work on sorting out the font and getting the sister site logos mocked up though.
To everyone who entered: Whilst NHR and Platre stood out the most, I really appreciate all your entries. There were some close runners up in the poll, and I could see the awesome elements in each of your logos.

Does this contest need to be moved to revisions forum? I'd like to get things finished up with Platre asap.
Thanks.

Hi Platre,
I want to just play around with a few small parts of the design just to get things looking perfect.
I'd like to see the icon without the light gray ball behind it. Also, were there any variations of the font you downloaded? What I had in mind was more rounded than your example. You can see what I mean in the attachments below. I picked out this font because the example was looking really nice with text taken from their website.

Hi clink,
Yes I think I understand what you mean when you say more rounded shape for the font.
With the Titillium font you sent me, this aspect is only possible with lower case letters, not with the upper case ones.

Thanks for the revisions Platre!
By the way, please feel free to call me Tom :).
I think we're almost there. I can't decide on whether I prefer upper-case or lower-case so may need both variations as separate files when delivered.
Could the text be darker (303030).
I think that should be the main logo done after that. Would you mind showing upper and lower case for the rest of the logos please?

Thanks for the revisions Platre! Looking great :)
For the sister sites there should be the word 'EXTRA' underneath the main text. Just the same as 'NETWORK' on the FanExtra logo. However, it doesn't need to stretch to the whole width of the main text, as clearly this will vary per sister site.
