Hi all,

We've had great results using DesignOutpost.com so far, so we're continuing with this template contest. This contest will run until Monday, December 8th (unless we decide to extend it). Happy designing!!

Overview

The site will showcase the CS2000 IT Project, a project run by the Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. The aim of the project is to propose a new technical curriculum for high-school students, giving them a more broad exposure to different areas of technology. It is hoped that this new curriculum will allow students to decide what area of technical expertise they will pursue in college.

Site Design Considerations

We want the site to load quickly and to look clean and professional. We like the general look of www.msu.edu (http://www.msu.edu/) and www.utexas.edu (http://www.utexas.edu/). We obviously don't need anything that robust, but we will need the site to be scalable. Not too many bells and whistles either because most of our traffic will be public school administrators and teachers. We'll be hosting a number of PDF files, as well as the curriculum associated with this IT program.

We already have a great logo (designed by DesignOutpost's own Mark Beaudry) that can be found at the site's 'coming soon' page:

www.cs2000project.org (http://www.cs2000project.org)

We need a 'main' page template and at least one content page template. We also need a secure part of the site (password protected) that only authorized people can access, so we'll need a login prompt on the main page. We'd prefer Dreamweaver templates (.dwt) or standard HTML templates.

If I've omitted any important information, please post questions here.

Thanks very much, and we look forward to all your submissions!!!

May we have this logo with layers in .PSD format?

Thanks,
Sean

Absolutely, but the file is too big to attach here (521kb).

Try this:

Thanks a bunch. I will work on an entry for this, but not sure when I will have the chance.

With the holiday, work, school and the 5 other contests I have going right now I am watching my time a bit closely, but I WILL enter.

Also, are there any pictures of the ACC campus or IT buildings?

I had an idea but google only brings up VERY low quality images of some very cool looking buildings.

I don't know, I'll look into it. I'll post info when I have it. Don't let the lack of pictures stop you though!!! ;)

Well I design around my graphics so it's kind of hard for me to get started. LOL.

I haven't been able to find any better pictures of the campus online either. I've sent a request to my contacts there, but it'll be Monday before we get anything back.

Might as well get the ball rolling. I think I broke the "bells and whistles" parameter, but that's what revisions are for. ;) I was torn between a few different header images and I ended up with this one. If you can get some pictures from the campus, I would like to work with those. Otherwise, I like my choice. You noted that you would have a lot of PDF's on the site. That's where the "document center" idea came from.

EDIT: I nabbed all the links from one of the sites you posted.

I have entered delirious territory, so what looks half decent to me now at 2am, will probably look like hell to me when the med's kick in and I get some sleep, but here is what my body is telling me to submit.

Content stolen from MSU.

Excellent work so far, guys!

Keep the submissions coming!!

We should have some feedback on these in the next couple of days...

bbtech
12-05-2003, 07:00 AM
Well, I was hoping for a few more submissions... but...

So far, I do have some feedback for Jereme:

1) Ditch the 'document center' section. Nice idea, but we don't want to go in that direction.

2) We need a 'content page' template as well (as I noted in the contest description). Can you whip up something for that based on your template and post it?

Also: We're going to be getting some pictures of students to use on the main page instead of the building picture you used. As soon as they're available, I'll get them to all of you to play with.

Also: We're going to be getting some pictures of students

Just waiting for them !

Thanks,

Well, I was hoping for a few more submissions... but...

Hi ! :D

I think Markīs Logo fits perfectly into the proposal. Itīs a very nice one ! :)

So I tried to spin off from it.
I waited for the photos... but... that was not a problem for me.
I used text based menus and light graphics.

Overall, thatīs what I got so far. (if you like it, I can customize the buttons "enter", "start search" , or improve any other graphics.)

Thanks,

Henrique.

Henrique,

Nice work. Only one comment:

Remove the 'search' section and replace it with an 'external links' section or something else.

Thanks!

Thanks bbtech. :D

Thatīs the modified version. Closer ?

bbtech
12-07-2003, 08:30 PM
Yes, closer.

However... ;)

I'm not sure what the 'Select Links' listbox is for, the links in that section would be external and of course the PDF docs I mentioned would be internal.

Anyway, how about removing the listbox and the subheads and just have the links like the 'Menu' section.

Thanks!

hheine
12-07-2003, 08:42 PM
Nice

And about the PDFs ? Are you going to create a link in the main menu for them ?

Please check:

IT Project (http://www.openmarket.com.br/DesignOutpost/it/index3.htm)

bbtech
12-07-2003, 08:48 PM
Yes, we'll put a link in the 'menu' section for the documents and then we'll all the docs linked from there.

Looks good, we'll get more feedback to you in a few days.

I never received any feedback on my design, should I assume that there was lack of interest and may now use aspects of that layout elsewhere?

Please let me know
Thanks

Xterior,

An answer to your question:

The 'powers that be' did not consider your design to be the direction they wanted the site to take. We have been having difficulty getting feedback from them, hence the 'no feedback' to you. I apologize.

bbtech
12-10-2003, 02:47 PM
Henrique,

A few more minor revisions:

1) The 'login' area will just be a password-protected 'members only' area, so we don't need a username field or a 'lost password?' link. The section should simply be labeled 'Members Area' or something similar with a password field and a 'Go' button or something.

2) While we really like the 'stars' on the header graphics (Welcome to the project, Featured Projects), the 'powers that be' don't. Please remove the stars and make the left end of the bar look like the right. I hope that makes sense.

3) Remove the 'Events' section on the right hand side under the login area. We like the 'T' shaded in red, so leave that like it is.

Thanks in advance for your revisions!!

bbtech

Henrique,

I mis-spoke in my previous post. In regard to the header bars, make the left edge square like the others on the page, as opposed to 'the same as the right' as I said above.

Sorry...

No apology necessary. Just wanted to know if I was free to use this design or aspects of it elsewhere.

Best of luck with this contest and good luck to the designers!

Here is a revision. I removed the document center section and made a couple of other changes as well. I used a temporary photo, since yours are not available yet. Let me know what you think.

bbtech

Henrique,

Excellent work.

Jereme,

I like the revisions. We'll see what the 'powers that be' think.

We should have a winner soon!!!

bbtech

Ok Henrique,

One more revision... and I promise this is the last one.

I know I said we liked the shaded 'T' on the right side, but I've been outvoted by the infamous 'powers that be'.

Leave everything as it is, just remove the shaded 'T'.

That's it.

Thanks.
