Abstract:
This contest is for a set of two HTML templates (landing page and content page) for a brand new online storefront and web site. Deliverables include the source PSD files, the templates coded in HTML with associated CSS style sheets, and any additional graphics required for buttons/tabs/etc. Prize is $185.

Scope of Deliverables:
Photoshop source files (PSDs)
Two HTML templates with associated CSS files, as per the included Design Guidelines
Buttons and/or Tabs graphic source files (if separate from PSD file)
Ecommerce shopping cart buttons integrated into design theme (various base button pack graphics provided)

Timeline: The contest will run for roughly 2 weeks and a winner will be declared on 1/19/2004. Delivery of final production materials is desired by 12/31/03. Extensions may be issued in consideration of upcoming holidays.

Site/Application Name: Motorcycle Canada

URL: www.motorcyclecanada.com

Description of Site/Application:
MotorcycleCanada is a new Canadian online retailer specializing in providing motorcycle apparel and aftermarket motorcycle parts and accessories for all types of motorcycles from street bikes, to dirt bikes, to ATVs.

Market/Audience:
Our main audience will primarily be male adults aged 18 – 45, a majority of who will have at least one motorcycle in the family. I would say that a majority of our audience are web/technology literate and are using the internet to price shop. We will be selling direct to our customers using the website primarily, but we may also open a physical storefront in the future.

Key Ideas/Psychology:
Mood/Tone - The site layout should combine the functionality of a professional site (easily navigated by using an intuitive layout) with the look of a cutting edge, hip, cool visual experience.
Colour Psychology - The colour mix is open for interpretation (I basically don’t have one in mind :) ). My only stipulation is that the main content area containing the ecommerce shopping cart piece be on a white background.

Design Guidelines:

General Guidelines
I’m looking for a techy, cutting edge graphical look but with consideration made towards the rules of classical ecommerce composition. Please do not use frames or Flash.
Polish – for example, graphical buttons, tabs, etc. must have all images required for multi-state behavior. Specifically, when a button is clicked, there must be a visual image available for the “on” state of the button. For tabs, the “active” tab must be visually distinctive from the “inactive” tabs.
Coherency – for example, font styles used in graphical elements (e.g. buttons and tabs) must look good when combined with standard web fonts in the content areas (Verdana is being used for the content piece).
Use tables for layout, CSS for styling and behaviors. HTML Browser Support IE 5.5+ (PC), IE 5.0+ (Mac), NN 6.0+ (PC), Opera 6.0+ (PC). In general, this means HTML 4.0 and CSS Level 1.
Fonts – the ecommerce shopping cart content will use Verdana as the main font.

Header
The header should incorporate the following elements:
>main department rollover buttons in a graphical format (please design with flexibility in mind as departments may be added or removed from time to time)
---->departments include: home, street wear, dirt wear, casual wear, accessories, parts, ATV, clearance
>ecommerce buttons / icons
---->buttons / icons for: my account, view cart, checkout, help
>login area
---->boxes for “userid” and “password” as well as a “login” button and a text link that reads “Forgot your password? Click here!”
>search function
---->a “search” box and a “go” button
>within the header should be the words “All Prices in Canadian Funds” or something to that effect
>add a text placeholder within the header that reads “Items: 0 Subtotal: $0.00” which will be replaced with coded output once the shopping cart is configured
>also add a text placeholder for a phone number that reads “(555) 555-5555” (to be changed later)

Design considerations for header:
1)the header graphic should be no larger than 150 pixels high
2)design with a minimum browser width of 750 pixels in mind
3)please, no use of specific motorcycle images/pictures/photos and no corporate logos/inferences
4)Canadian icons can be used if it works in your design (standard icon is a maple leaf)
5)universal motorcycle icons are also acceptable (ie. sprocket, chain, wheel, piston, valve, etc)
6)sample of business card included in .zip file to illustrate shadowing concept (your choice to use concept or not)

Footer:
The footer should complement the design of the header and will include the following:
- the text “Copyright © 2003, MotorcycleCanada.com Retail Inc.”
- CSS text links for: about us, contact, search, view cart, privacy policy, terms of use, sitemap
- miscellaneous icons to be included: Visa and Mastercard logos

Category Menu (Left Column):
The left hand column will incorporate two pieces: 1) the category menu (or 2nd level menu) and 2) a customer service panel.
Category Menu:
- the categories included in the left hand column will vary by department, so please incorporate flexibility again (ie. easily modified as categories change)
- the category links should be text based with the necessary CSS link states (over, on, active)
- if possible, incorporate a marker to further delineate which category is currently active (ie. an arrow icon)
Customer Service Panel:
- the category links should be text based with the necessary CSS link states (over, on, active)
- links to be included are: size charts, wish list, shopping policies, shipping information, returns/exchanges, and FAQs

Template 1: Landing Page (Site Home Page)
Design priorities for this page are to welcome the customer and illustrate the current specials.
Requires strong graphical design/branding, including the provided logo and stylizing.
The following functional elements are required on the Landing Page: header, footer (as described above)

Template 2: Content Page
Same basic design as the Landing page.
The following functional elements are required on the Content Page: header, footer, category menu (as described above)

Resources Provided:
Logo in high resolution vector format (Illustrator)
Sample button packs (.png format)
Business card sample (to illustrate use of background shadowing concept)

Reference Sites (Competitors):

There doesn't seem to be much interest in this contest. Are the designers busy working away on other contests? Are people taking time off because of the upcoming holidays? Are the requirements too vague or not of interest? Is the prize money too low? I have always been impressed with the quality and quantity of entries found on this site, so please let me know if there is anything about this contest that needs changing or improving.

Cheers,
Jon

I actually had a design in the works for this the first time around, but I am not feeling it now. If I can work out a way to integrate your logo into a design the way I want to, then you will see an entry from me.

A few key themes that I would like the template to communicate to the visitor are motorcycles, Canadian, and professionalism.

Given that the site will be carrying product for all types of motorcycles (race bikes, cruisers, dirt bikes, ATVs, etc.), I want to try and avoid any specific types of motorcycles in the template design, for fear of alienating a specific group of customer. Also, I feel that going the other route, including images of all the various types of bikes, would make the design look cluttered. But, if the designers think they can pull this off, I am definitely open to suggestions.

The use of motorcycle component images (things found on/with all bikes) might work. For example, wheels, chain, sprockets, speedometer, piston, helmets, etc. The manufacturers of these components should have images on their sites (here is just a very small sampling):

www.ozwheels.com
www.renthal.com
www.sprocketspecialists.com
www.araiamericas.com

Canadian icons could be used to show the geographic element (ie. stylized maple leaf).

Not too sure if I have answered your question accurately, but I hope this helps with your design.

Here is my entry.

Came faster than I thought it would.

I probably forgot some stuff, but I got on a roll with a certain feel, so I went with it.

*used filler text from another design I did for another contest since there wasn't any and I got sick of seeing latin*

[note] the photo is of an area of a motorycycle with a blur placed on the entire area with the exception being the emblem (sp) area and another area that looks like it has some bolts and stuff.

I think your design is very hip and alternative ... something that would definitely set our site apart from the competition. However, there are a few elements that just aren't working for me:

I like the use of the sub-boxes with the mini images which could be used to showcase our specials. But, I feel this would only work on the landing page.

I feel that the header graphic is too large (tall) and might not translate well onto a content page. Again, I feel it works on a landing page only. Furthermore, our company logo should be more prominent as we will be trying to build our "brand" around this graphic. I understand how difficult it must be to find universal motorcycle images to use in this design, but the blurred image used is a little too specific our tastes. If you choose to make adjustments, perhaps images of the front wheel with front brakes/front forks might be more general.

Thanks for your submission.

I thought we were to submit designs for the initial page only?

Maybe I read wrong or am confusing this with another contest?

Unfortunatley I won't have time to make the changes you mention at this time, but if you decided you wanted to use my entry at some point I would be more than willing to adjust it accordingly.

As for the header image. So we all get on the same page, I think it would be very helpful to the design team if you could post links or lead us towards the kinds of images you are looking for.

The task of designing a site is a pretty complex process and we all are busy people (including yourself). So providing us with more of an idea of what you are looking for in regards to the design and/or header of the site it would help everyone involved to reach your goals much more efficiently and effectively.

Thank You.

Understanding that it would be difficult to include images of motorcycles in the header design without being specific in terms of types of motorcycles, I felt that is was important to note in my requirements that use of such images was not a route I wanted to take in this contest. Therefore, I can appreciate how hard it must be to design without the use of specific images.

As for what I am looking for in the header without relying on specific stock images, I like sites or designs that incorporate geometrical shapes and patterns as backgrounds. Also, I think that the company's static logo needs to be prominent in the designs with perhaps the option of adding more subtle versions of the logo resized, morphed, blurred, faded, etc. incorporated into the background design. The use of Canadian icons in a similar morphed, blurred, faded, etc. type of way would also be beneficial. This hopefully would work within the 150 pixel height restriction.

I like the look of the following sites:

www.2advanced.com (futuristic look)
www.spoono.com (the abstract header background image)
www.residentadvisor.com.au (faded logo used in header)
www.pankpages.com (abstract background)

I hope this helps the designers with their submissions for this contest.

Cheers,
Jon

Luc,

Yes, I like the header design of the sample you posted and I also like the look of some of the samples from weevox.com. I would also prefer a lighter base colour for the template ... something other than black or dark grey.

Not too sure if those motorcycle images would work for me in their current form ... maybe as a morphed, blurred piece of the background that wouldn't be immediately distinguishable. Or maybe zoomed in on the rear wheel of the second image. The silhouette one wouldn't work for me.

Hope this helps.

That header looks really good Luc  I think I like the first one better than the second one with the silhouette, but that's primarily because of the bike picture. Can you try replacing the bike silhouette with something else (maybe a maple leaf)? Also, maybe it's the screen that I'm viewing it on, but the logo and company name seem to blend into the background. Is it possible to get them to stand out a little better?

Just a few revision requests though:

1) Can you make the main department buttons stand out more ... maybe make them larger or more bold.
2)I would like the company name to also stand out more, either in a larger form or placed somewhere else in the design ... it seems lost below the logo as it currently is.
3)Can you add a "register" button to the login panel.
4)Can you show me the design for the second page with the category menu on the left without the login panel, please.

2)I would like the company name to also stand out more, either in a larger form or placed somewhere else in the design ... it seems lost below the logo as it currently is.
3)Can you add a "register" button to the login panel.
4)Can you show me the design for the second page with the category menu on the left without the login panel, please.

Cheers,
Jon [/b][/quote]
Glad you like it :) Can you post the font used in the logo? Thanks!

The font used was Empire Builder, however I think it was tweaked by the logo designer (not too sure how many characters were altered ... maybe just the "y").

Anymore revisions? Additionals?

This is the design I was working on. I went ahead and finished it off anyway.

Jereme,

There's been an incredible progression in your design skills in the past month or so. You've really stepped it up colour and layout-wise. The XTC Computers template is sweet, and now this Motorcycle Canada one is just plain awesome.

The rest of us better watch our back

Luc,

Thanks for the most recent revisions, but I have a couple more requests:

1) Can you please replace the "Forget your password ..." text with a button that says "register" and place it opposite the "login" button.

2) Can you move the company name "motorcyclecanada.com" from below the logo and place it somewhere else in the header where it will stand out more. At the same time, please lower the logo position from its current placement so that the top of the middle flame is not getting cutoff.

3) I re-read my original post and I didn't make it really clear how I wanted the left side category menu to come out. The Login and Customer Service panels are great the way they are ... I just need a sub-menu for each main department, something similar to the sub-menu on the left in this link:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/divis...aspx?division=1 (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/division.aspx?division=1)

Can you please try and incorporate this sub-menu into your design. Also, this sub-menu will replace the Login Panel on each content page (ie. the Login panel is only present in the left column on the landing page, not on any of the content pages).

Thanks,
Jon

Jereme,

Thanks for submitting a design for this contest ... I like the subtleness of the colour scheme you've used. I don't have any suggestions/revisions at this time.

Jon

Geof: Wow. Thanks. :-) I have noticed a change as well. With all the awesome designers here, I guess you're really forced to get better.

Jon: Just so you know... The final design would be set on a % so that it expands with the browser (or it could be fixed if you prefer). And, most of the design besides the header would be CSS so loading would be really fast.

Revisions:

I don't know what to put in the content so I leave it blank. What should I put in it?

Looks great Luc!!

Sorry to be so picky, but it looks like the bottom of the "y" in the company name has been cutoff ... is this an easy fix? Also, is it possible to make all the background in the left column the same shade of grey vs. some grey some white?

Don't worry about the content section ... it will be dynamically generated by the shopping cart tool when the site goes live ... what you have now is fine as a placeholder.

Thanks for all your effort!
Jon

Everything is an easy fix. :) Since it's only a minor change, I will just make the changes if ever I win if that's ok.

Did you have any changes that you would like me to make or something you would like to see in my design?

First off, I would like to thank ths designers who took the time and effort to enter this contest ... the work submitted is top notch and the designers themselves are very professional. Also, this site is an excellent resource and I'm sure I'll find myself back here in the future with more contests.

Now without further delay, the winner of this contest is ....... Luc. I look forward to receiving the design and opening the site for business soon. :D

Cheers,
Jon
