My name is Shannon and I am the lucky parent on the Internet redesign committee who "won" the right to lead the redesign of my child’s school website. I am doing this contest to expedite the redesign process and am paying for it out of my own pocket. I wish I could offer more but the school has zero budget and it is Christmas, so I have to buy the kids something. :D
Here is the background for this contest:
Company name: Dobson Academy Charter School
Company profile: Dobson Academy is a charter school located in sunny Chandler, Arizona. It is a high performing K-8th Grade Charter/Public School, "Where Children Are the Priority".
Domain name: DobsonAcademy.org (http://www.dobsonacademy.org) (sit down first)
What is the scope of this project?: Redesign website layout/design (3 -templates, homepage and content sections (one for text only and one with a location for an image)) that can be used throughout the site. Current site does not reflect the quality education being offered at Dobson Academy and the existing website does not offer any information dissemination for existing students. There are about 25 pages of content that have been taken offline until this redesign is completed. I have content for all the sections defined later in this document.
Basically, we are looking for help with design/layouts for 3 pages -- the main page and two content pages(text and graphics pages), one for text only and one with a location for an image. I am expecting the two content pages are identical, outside of a design element for an image or two. These are essentially 'watered down' copies of the first page. Elements from the first page are expected to be used on the other layouts, keeping a more consistent look and hopefully making your job easier. I am expecting to receive HTML and PhotoShop 7 format files with included fonts, allowing me to import my content into the design.
I would also prefer that the layouts/templates be manageable by people who are not guru graphic designers like the ones that live on this site. What I mean is a overly graphic intense layout will require a greater level of design and HTML knowledge, neither of which this school has. Design is very important but manageability is equally important.
Who is the intended audience?: Arizona parents who are considering sending their child to a charter school as an alternative to the public school system. Additionally, existing parents and students of Dobson Academy. The goal is to offer content that is applicable to them as well.
Mood or tone?: Most of all, I want parents to come away from the site understanding what makes Dobson Academy different. Since Dobson Academy emphasize “Where Children Are the Priority”, they are looking for an image that depicts a focus on children, quality education, professionalism and playful fun. The use of imagery is required.
Color psychology?: I am not stuck on any specific colors. Again, playful but professional is desired. I know these two “don’t” necessarily mix but give it a shot.
Websites I like:
http://www.greatschools.net/
http://www.pavcs.org/ <-- Like this one the best. Professional.
http://animal.discovery.com/
Who are our main competitors?:
http://ww2.chandler.k12.az.us/
http://www.kyrene.org/ksdportal/
http://www.mesa.k12.az.us/main2/
Other Ball Charter Schools:
http://www.geocities.com/drjolly1/sbcs.html
http://www.hearnacademy.org/
What resources can you provide?: Please see logos and information below
1. <img src='http://ridingarizona.com/dobson/rotating-schoolhouse.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' /> 2. <img src='http://ridingarizona.com/dobson/ballcharpriority.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' /> 3. <img src='http://ridingarizona.com/dobson/dolphin2logo.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Images #1 (please stop the spinning)and #2 go hand-in-hand. They are to be presented together (left to right) and image #1 should only be slightly taller than image #2, rather than the way it is presented. Image #3 is the mascot for Dobson Academy, the dolphins. The image is not the official mascot image, cause they have no official image. You can use your imagination on the dolphin and use the one provided, create a new one or find one in the stock images you may have but it has to be on the site. Additionally, I have access to many hi-res digital images of the school itself, class photos, playground, events, etc. I have Photoshop 7 and can put the images in whatever design is created with a little direction.
What sections am I thinking about? There are four main sections and each has its own sub-sections and pages. This is just what I was thinking based on my fondness for the Pavcs.org site listed above. Notice on the nav how the main sections have sub-sections and those sub-sections have pages that contain the content. I need all the items listed below but am open to reorganization. They are as follows:
1. About Us
a. Mission & Vision
b. Meet The Principal
c. School Staff
d. Volunteering - A.L.I.V.E.
e. School Calendar
f. Virtual Tour
g. Map & Driving Directions
h. Contact Us
2. Our Program
a. Description & Strategies
b. Curriculum
- Kindergarten
- First Grade
- Second Grade
- Third Grade
- Fourth Grade
- Fifth Grade
- Sixth Grade
- Seventh Grade
- Eighth Grade
c. Teaching Methods
d. Parent Involvement
3. How to Enroll
a. General information regarding how to enroll your child. Possibly include information regarding the status of each grade.
b. Waiting list submission form.
4. Existing Students
a. School Calendar
b. Lunch Menu
c. Student Handbook
Under every section in the navigation:
· Site Map
· Contact Us
· Home
On our front page, we expect to have:
1. Dobson Academy name, Ball Charter School logo and dolphin
2. sectional links
3. a place for an introduction to Dobson Academy (content found here -> http://www.dobsonacademy.org/Dobson/dobson...newsletter.htm) (http://www.dobsonacademy.org/Dobson/dobson-newsletter.htm))
4. a small place for announcements of school events, closures, important messages, etc.
5. imagery
6. contact information
Deadline: 25 December 2003 unless there's sufficient activity to justify an extension.
I’ll watch for questions and reminders of what I have missed in this description.

Hey Shannon-
Welcome!
After quickly glancing over your post, I would highly recommend removing the phone number you have listed until the contest is closed and the site is ready to go up.
Just out of protection for you and your client/school. Not saying anyone here would abuse it, but this site is viewable by anyone who comes across it.
Welcome aboard. I will read further into your requirements and such in the AM.
Regards,
Sean

Can you zip up some of the images you have and give them to us?
The logo and spinning thing that you have provided are not of the best quality. Would you be opposed to us recreating them? Or, if you have better versions, that would be good too.

I requested images from the school and should have something by Monday. As for the other images in my original post I do not have the originals, nor does the school. I actually pulled those images off the Internet, so, yes, recreation is COOL. Thanks for your reply.

Yes, looks excellent. Looks like the webserver I had the three logos/images on from my origial post just puked. I have emailed Palmer a ZIP with the three logos from my origianl post in it. Looking forward to seeing some of the comps.

I got mixed up on that logo. I made a whole design with that name on it before I realized that Dobson Academy is the name of a specific school in the group. Oh, well. Moving right along...
This is the idea that I had.
- It has a professional, yet "playful" look. I think the colors and the dolphin accomplish that fairly well.
- The top menu would be text-based and easy for you to update should you need to add another link.
- Everything else would be pretty straight forward to edit as well.
One more question. You didn't want to incorporate ALL of those subsection links above into the main page as well, did you? If so, it would probably be best done with some DHTML menus as the links would take up significant space otherwise.
EDIT: Image removed.

I made a couple of small changes to the dolphin. I think it looks better this way.
stwilson
12-12-2003, 10:29 PM
Jereme,
Agreed. I like the second version better. You are off to a great start!
In reply to your question, I did not want to integrate the other sub-pages into the main page. However, I am interested in seeing how you will integrate them in the secondary page.
On the top-right navigation on the main page, can you change the order to be:
About Us, Our Program, How To Enroll and Existing Students?
Also, a thought on the height of the top banner/imagery, it appears to be very tall. Could you show me a version that takes up less vertical space?
Lastly, the treatment on the footer is a little bland. Anything you can do to give it a little flavor?
Those are my thoughts, for now. Thanks for what you have so far. It's looking good.
Shannon

Thanks for your feedback shannon.
Do you have a target height that you were considering for the header? What resolution are you at? I'm guessing that it's 800x600.
It would more than likely have to be DHTML menus of some sort or a series of dropdown boxes to accommodate that many links. I'll work on that later once I get more approval for the main design.
I'll work on the footer some more too.
Do you like the elements that I've chosen? Mainly the way that I incorporated the dolphin...... I really like the dolphin. :)
stwilson
12-13-2003, 06:44 AM
Jereme,
My resolution is 1024X768. I think 175-200 pixels would be a good target. Your design looks to be about 240. Am I close? I like what you have, just want to see it the header take up a little less space.
I do like what you have so far. I like the direction. I like the dolphin and how you have integrated it into the design. For the links on the secondary pages, I still like the concept that was used at http://www.pavcs.org.
All systems go.
Shannon
JeremeDavid
12-13-2003, 07:30 AM
Yes. Everything from the black menu bar to the grey bar below was 240 pixels. ;-)
What I did in the revision is some simple rearranging. I cropped off some of the picture on the right so I could move the menu bar down. Then, I moved the title above that and added icons on the right for the links that will be on all of the pages. The total header height is about the same as it was before, but the main imagery portion is significantly smaller than it was.
I wasn't sure exactly in what direction you wanted to go with the footer, so I just changed the color from the grey. I didn't want it to be too distracting.

Jereme,
 Not sure I like the changes. What I was looking for was something less vertical. I think the school name and dolphin stacked on top of each other is adding to the vertical size of the header. Is there anything you can do to slim it down some? On the footer, after seeing it in another color I like the gray better. :o

Here we go. As much as I liked my dolphin, I had to set him free. I ditched pretty much the whole design in favor of something *really* clean like the design you said you liked most in your first post. The main design fits at 750px wide. The two outer color blocks would just be there and get wider on higher resolutions.

Here is the existing school sign. I never knew this, until this morning, but it integrates the Ball Charter School image and Dobson Academy. here is a look:

Please note, this design is for Dobson Academy, which is affiliated with the Ball Charter Schools network.

Jereme,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I like your new approach. It is simple, yet effective. I like this version. Could you refer to the Dobson Academy sign I posted to see if you could tie the ball icon into the Dobson Academy logo at the top? Additionally, is there any treatment you could apply to the three column design to make one of them different from the other two, maybe the left one?

Pod,
I like it. Can you integrate the dolphin, so it doesn't stick out like a, well, dolphin? Also, can you please see the school sign I posted to see about making the Dobson Academy logo at the top of your design look like the school sign? Can you tell/show me what you were thinking for the subsequent pages? Lastly, can you show me a version of your design in blue? Looking good.

Trifolic,
I like your usage of space and how you broke the screen up into "non-traditional" columns. Excellent. Can you add the Ball Charter Schools logo to your design, somwhere near the bottom?
I'm not sure what else I would offer for direction on this home page. I am interested in how the secondary pages would layout, considering I have multiple pages under each main section. I like the direction you are heading. Thanks for the comps.

Shannon, Here are some options that can be eaisly done if my design is choosen.
1.) Area 2 can be used as content area, and all the pages would use the header/footer as the layout.
2.) Area 1 can be removed, and the beige logobox just extended to the end of the page, as well as the blue box.
It would be better to handle the content area by HTML/CSS than images/design. It will be much eaiser to maintain and update that way.
Thanks

Jason,
1. I like the thought of consistent headers and footers on each page. For the content area, my question is this, how will you integrate the navigation for the pages within each section. For example:
1. About Us
a. Mission & Vision
b. Meet The Principal
c. School Staff
d. Volunteering - A.L.I.V.E.
e. School Calendar
f. Virtual Tour
g. Map & Driving Directions
h. Contact Us
So if I click on About Us in the main page, how will you present the navigation for the sub-pages a-h above.
2. Can you show me how that would look, so I can see if my content will compliment this approach?
Thanks for your efforts.

You can go in a few directions with the menu and content pages. Below is one idea. Also have you thought about Dynamic Menus? If you vist HERE (http://www.lakeshorefire.com) You can also have dropdown menus if you want, quite easy to implement.
Let me know what your thoughts are on this.

I like the drop down / fly out menu on that site you referenced. I like them a lot. Can you control the background color to make it match the overall site design? Just curious. That would free up that real estate and make the screen less cluttered.
One question, is there any way to make the current page title you are on more prominent in the design on the secondary pages? My only other thought is the section to the right of the school logon on the secondary pages looks empty.

Yes the Dropdown menus as shown, can be cutomized to be any color combination you like, this includes the mouseover as well.

Pod,
FYI. On the Flash navigation, none of the people who will be asked to manage this have any Flash experience. Therefore, any future changes will be difficult to manage.
Could you move the tag line where children are the priority to the top, to the right of the Dobson Academy logo?
On the secondary page, if I have a page that is content heavy and does not include a form how would you layout that? The secondary page you created looks good for a page that is split more 50/50 but what about a page that is content heavy with a image to break up the layout. What would that look like?

Ok here's my entry. If there is anything you would like to see changed just let me know and I'll take care of it.
One quick note about how I think you should handle the navigation. I think Milonic Menu (http://www.milonic.com/menusample.php?sampleid=1) would work well here. Don't be discouraged by the licensing fees, it’s free for non-profits. They just require that you implement the menu first and then send them a link for approval.
Feedback is always appreciated B)

Ant1832,
Very nice and clean. I like it. Can you replace the Ball Charter Schools logo with the Dobson Academy looking logo from page two of this thread? Dobson Academy is the school and they are associated with the Ball Charter Schools network.
Can you replace the upside down chair image with something more schoolish, maybe something that has students in it?
Can you tell/show me what you were envisioning for the secondary pages? For the secondary pages, can you include an image within the text or were you thinking the blocks on the right would contain images???
I really like the menu suggestion. I checked it out and think it will compliment the design. Very cool.

Club69,
Cool. I work/play some late nights but 5AM that's late. Good to hear you are working on something. I like what I have seen so far but it is alway nice to have choices. Please note, this design is for Dobson Academy not Ball Charter Schools. Dobson is affiliated with Ball Charter Schools.
Imagery and colors are all up to you. The school's focus is the K-8th grade, so keep it grade school focused. Again, thank you for your efforts.

Wow. I like it. I like your use of imagery and how you integrated the dolphin. Actually, I REALLY like how you put the dolphin in the design in such a way that it is not obtrusive. Excellent.
Can you tell me a little bit about the navigation on the left? Does it collapse/expand based on the major section clicked? Is that your thought? Additionally, what will your secondary page look like? Can you mock up a secondary page that includes at least one image in the text?
The only criticism (if you could call it that, because your design is very good) would be the "border" in the header, the part with the circles, triangle and squares. Would it be possible to do something more chalkboardish? Something like the green graphic on this page http://ahaclipart.com/ca/schl/schl0021.html, the one with the ABC's on it. If it will not fit your design...no biggie. Like I said....what you have is pretty good. Thank you for your efforts.

Thanks Shannon.
It was very tough to place the dolphin without broking basic design rules. I´m glad you liked it. :D

Basically yes. There are two options. Horizontal and vertical expansions. This is what I have in mind:
http://www.itascacc.edu/menu/menu.php
Horinzotal expanding is possible too. If you have any problems with that, please let me know.
Additionally, what will your secondary page look like? Can you mock up a secondary page that includes at least one image in the text?
Sure. I will start working on one for you.

Hi Shannon,
Here are my entries. I decided to draw upon my visits to AZ for the color palette, and used several shades of tan. Since most visitors will be parents, I went for a professional look, and a design that has little wasted space and has a small header. Additionally I created some of my own dolphins, as I thought it presented a little more of a professional image. Hope you like it ;)
Thanks,
Cary

Luc,
Awesome job. I like your use of color and imagery.
Can you explain to me the difference between the first and second page? I understand all the elements except the Become a Member section on the first page and the list of links in the second page that uses the same section. Can you explain that to me? Is that the result of a click on one of the design elements?
Overall, your design shows a little on the darker side (tone). Can you lighten the overall look a "little?"
Otherwise your desing looks good. Thanks for your work so far.

Ant,
I like the treatment you used on the headers for the two blocks on in the right-hand column. However, I don't care for the concept of putting the main content in a table on the left. I like how you put the image in there but can you take the content out of the table, like it was on your first take?
Otherwise, I really like your design and approach. It is very clean and you display a good use of "white" space and imagery. Good job. Your work is great. Thanks for your efforts on this contest.

Shannon,
Thank you for your feedback.
The difference between the first page and the second page-The homepage with the Become a member is just an element or a 'part' of a design like in PAVCS.
The second page or the subpage is the ABOUT US page (sorry I didn't make it clear), I put the sublinks in the area where the BECOME A MEMBER was.
The design works like PAVCS
Did I make any sense? :) Just let me know if my explanation isnt clear :) I'll get you the revision later.
Hi Shannon,
Here's the revision. I hope I get the colors right.
Homepage
<img src='http://www.weevox.com/mockups/dobson2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Subpage (About Us) Option #1
<img src='http://www.weevox.com/mockups/dobsonsubpage2a.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Subpage (About Us) Option #2
I positioned the sublinks in the left side below the header.
