==============================
What’s Required:
3 pages (Main page, Product view page and Product description). If you design the first page first I can pick a winner then they can do the other two pages. More than likely you would be asked to be rehired to add more to the site later on in the year.
Company name:
XTC Computers
Company profile:
My Company sells performance computers to second time buyers who know what they are looking for, I want to come across as professional well managed company that sells quality computers. The people I will be selling to will more than likely be professionals that have been or are in the IT industry so my website needs to work well (I.e. good, easy layout / navigation) and stand out from the "others" (Alienware) or they aren’t going to be buying from me!
Domain name:
http://www.xtccomputers.co.uk
What is the scope of this project?:
This is Going to be a brand new site based on the free cart system called osCommerce. Many feature of this cart system will be excluded as im going for simplicity.
Who is the intended audience?:
16+, males (generally), I want the site to look professional and make the buyer think they are getting quality products (they are) but at a more reasonable price.
Mood or tone?:
Obviously Professional, simple navigation, as much "wow factor" as it possibly can without it looking tacky. I do like the LCD look,(http://robouk.mchost.com/tuts/tutorial.php?tutorial=lcdorbs) and the interface style. But I don’t want the website to try and not look like a website so to speak. A Futuristic style would also be a nice angle as I believe that it would make my products come across as future proof, if you can understand where im coming from. :)
Color psychology?:
Black background, white text, hints of red around the site. Some chrome (not shiny) thrown in for good measure. I like reflective stuff... if you can implement it without it looking tacky that would be great. But im pretty sure its not possible :P
Any dynamic elements?:
Search form, member login (login and pass), New User, Cart (to show what’s in it)
---buttons---
Gaming
Style
Quiet
Office
Server
--shopping
Checkout
my account
--Customer Service
Contact us
Shipping & handling
company info
Returns & Cancellations
--Support
FAQ
Glossary
Who are your main competitors?:
http://www.alienware.com
http://www.meshcomputers.com
http://www.dell.com
(Among others, they’re just the big guns)
What resources can you provide?:
Logo ( http://www.synet.eclipse.co.uk/logo.png ) if you can improve on the logo it would be much appreciated! :) hehe.
Websites you like:
http://www.sendo.com/smartphones/index.asp (nice color scheme and futuristic look)
http://www.alienware.com (bad navigation (to much of it!) but looks professional if a bit to plasticy)
http://www.ati.com (Good navigation, nice professional look)
Deadline:
ASAP
==============================
Last note: Im a pretty open guy when it comes to ideas so if you want to stray from the guidelines I've set then by all means do, but it will be pretty risky, But you never know I might like the design. :D

I love that site. Are they are a competitor or no?

xteriormotive - not really a competitor since they are based in america but I admit it is a nice site and laid out very well. Better than the others.
A1future - thanks, the more the merrier! :)

Design 1
I like the header, very nice but unfourtuantly the menu bar just doesnt do it for me. I think its becuase of it being to large. I also like the background, nice shade of colors and the navigation.
Design F1
This is the fave out of all the ones you have done, just because I like what you did with the navigation / layout. Need to get rid of the corporate image though (the desk with the man behind it) still need to move the main menu (gaming, server etc...)
Design a1
To much red, to basic so to speak.
Design indexpage1
woud like the whole background to be dark, to much gray on the side bars, another corporate which doesnt fit.
Design indexpage2
Nice navigation, again to much gray. You need to localise new user and login / password. No no to corporate images.
summery
Take the header and navigation style from Desgin 1 (excluding the XTC bit) and intergrate it with design F1.
This site also give you an idea of how I want the navigation laid out.
http://paulharris.paulharris.com/catalog/default.php
You see, the products (menu) at the top (or side, which ever way... I dont mind) and the smaller navigation at the bottom. (shipping & handling, order status etc...) Also notice the cart, thats just how I would like it, so you can see the amount of items in the cart with the cost.

Do you have any hi resolution product photos.
I don't have the time to look around for images to use, so I was curious if you had some at your disposal.
Also, a few things that I am unsure of.
I.e. good, easy layout / navigation
But I don’t want the website to try and not look like a website so to speak
Those two points contradict each other; at least in terms of how I understand what you are saying. A good, easy layout and navigation is basically what makes up a normal/standard website structure.
I just want to understand what you actually want, one or the other...doing both is not really plausible, as they contradict each other by definition.
Thanks for your guidance.
Thanks,
Sean

Sorry I don't have any product images yet as the business isnt setup (waiting for the website ironicly) as for what I meant...
Some websites try really hard not to look like a website with awkward layout and navigation (user / customer easily confused), one simple way to make a decent site is to know the limitations of the internet and browsers.
Simple and clean is basicly what im looking for.
Sorry im not very good at explaining things :help: so sorry if im making it confusing

Design 1
Nice, make the red more darker and line up the seperators from the two bars. But the go button below the L&P boxes and change the "go" button as it looks a little tacky. Remove the XTC Computers logo from the header.
Design 3
Tthe dark gray bar doesnt work, sorry.
Design 4
prefer 5 (silver bar)
Design 5
Maybe put the search box on the left side of the menu bar? I like the little buttons but try to make them soother as if they are part of the button.
Design indexpage 1,2,3
tbh, I dont really like any of these. Sorry but I think I need to be honest :o before you put any more work into those.

HI,
Yes this includes HTML.
Any feedback about F1 - the one which you liked the most last time.
Also 2 and 6 ????
Let me know.

DigitalFodder
01-07-2004, 11:13 AM
Sorry about that, F1 does look nice but ive / theyve moven off the idea of sectioned areas of the menu. 2 looks the same as last time apart from the sectioned area of the checkout. 6 doesnt really work with the little buttons with the white / red theme. Keep the small buttons to silver. Generally the site needs to flow a bit more... ive made a few changes to one of your designs to give you a better idea.

im trying hard not to contradict what ive said already, but really the best layout and the one I like the most is the paul harris site. See if you can work that into the design you have? maybe.
http://paulharris.paulharris.com/catalog/default.php
Notice the large product menu then the web navigation for checkout / bag(that shows what youve got) / my account and login.
At the very bottom you have the smaller menu (which is what I would like) with shipping, cancelations and the like. Hope that helps a bit more.
Also anymore designers joining in? only one so far?

crazy, just as I said it.. in pops another designer

very very nice! Maybe try a dark red instead of green?
Spot on with the My Cart, Checkout and My account at the top. but maybe if you pulled it down a bit so the links come into the header.
Like the search  but you need to remove the bevel from the edge(s).
Remove the FAQ, Glossery and Contact US from the product menu.
move all these
Contact us
Shipping & handling
company info
Returns & Cancellations
To the bottom where you have the second product menu.
Maybe mess around with the buttons, make them smaller and take the corner gray thing away... just toy about and see what you get

Thanks for your comments
I wasn't sure what you meant about the bevel on the search box. There is a bit of a shadow, but that's it. With the red color, it's not as apparent though.
I changed a few other things in the design.
- I added one of those bottom menus that you like.
- I managed to work in some of those orbs that you like. ;-)
- I made the buttons smaller.
- I shifted around the menu items as requested.

its not a proplem, like I said at the begining. The more the merrier! :D
Jereme -
Your new design looks very very good, of course still needs the odd tweak. Ill show you want I meant by the bevel and checkout in a sec. The header, personally I dont like the swurlly like header but im assuming that if I where to pick your design then I could edit that bit in photoshop? Also the bottom menu, it was better before, I just didnt want a product menu there (since its on the side of the page) the the ones I listed (without the menu header, I.e customer service, shopping etc..) just the ones in the quote. Other than that  try and mess about with the header a bit and see what you get... last time you did you got a great result from the buttons :D
Now on the bevel and the checkout text...
http://www.synet.eclipse.co.uk/example1.jpg
Anne -
WOW, very nice the first design incorperates everything I said. Maybe the ony thing that needs changing is the header. See what you can come back with :) On the other two designs, version 2 doesnt work to well and version 3 has an image that stands out to much.
Everyone, you dont have to use the XTC logo! I made that in minutes so if you want to make a better one or just put a placeholder there so I can replace it later on that would get great
Thank you for the feedback. The header was my main consern but I will work on it and see what I can come up with.
- Anne
I tried something different with the header. Let me know what you think. If you don't like it I will start on a new one.

I took away the bevel and changed the top links the way you suggested. You are right about the header. Though you did not ask for the PSD orignally, you could have it if you wanted to make some changes.
XTC Computers Changes (http://www.photoshoptutorials.org/samples/xtc)
In this second one, I added something "radical" to the header. I like it a lot though you may not. :-)

Jereme -
I Like what you done with the bottom menu, just how I wanted it! You removed the bevel from only that bit of the red... I aslo wanted it removed from the search area. Is it possible to have a checkout button where the cart is? Also maybe change "my cart | checkout | my account" (in the top corner) to " Login | Register | My Account". If your feeling up for it maybe give it a shot at putting a small sharp highlight and shadow on the red bits (the search bit and the top of the product view)
On the header, nice change but doesnt really fit... if you saw the header from A1Futures design, I prefer more of that style.
Anne -
the first header is nice, but doesnt work to well with the page. As I mentioned to jereme if you take a look at A1Futures header (the one that I used as an example) thats more to what im looking for. Also, would it possible to change / mess about with the submit buttons? they seem a bit dark, defualt ones look nice bu try and make them more metalic.
one the second header, its nice, try not to put and of the metalic trims in. Maybe put more curvy stuff in... give it another shot.

Thank you all, your doing a fantastic job!

Design 1
I think it would be better if you removed the area wher the caption should be as it doesnt work for me. I dont think the iamge works either.
Design 2
The gray bar works well, try it on the other side. I forgot to mention that I like the menu at the bottom of the page... works v.well with your design  but the "our pc's" section needs to be removed from the bottom and to the left hand side menu.
Deign 3
Sorry but im not very fond of the white / red combo in the product menu bar.
Design 4
I like what you have done with the product menu bar, with the white on selection. Also I like the rounded edge of the search area. maybe put that with the dark gray from design 2 on each side.
Design F1
I like the navigation, as said before. Images need to be removed and the original header put in replacment of the current one.

I made a couple of changes to the header. I made it look more metallic and added a nice circuit pattern to it.
I added the hard highlight in both places that you suggested though it's not as apparent in the search area since it's already bright there. It looks good for the featured products, though.
I added the checkout button in the cart area where you wanted one.

Jereme -
Youve done really well in conveying what I wanted into a webpage. Still a few tweaks left, such as the red buttons... maybe change those to silvery or chrome like. The header is very very nice but the XTC computers doesnt quite work, I dont mind if you leave it out and ill add it myself or maybe you can do something to it? A Glossery button for the side and and Edit button next to the checkout button in the cart box.
Anne -
I like your design, in that less is more works extremely well here. The header is much better, all that is needed is the image on the left hand side to be removed and the XTC bit sorted out (I.e removed or inproved...maybe in the same format as the box trims / edges?).
luc -
Very very nice, theres not much I would change in your design! Well, (you wont get away that easy  ) except maybe make the red used around the site a bit more darker. Also the submit button next to the search bar needs to be more clear. Chane the checout button in the cart box to detials please. Would it be possible to have a screenshot of the website without the computer in the title?
Everyone has done extremely well and wish you the best of luck in winning the prize, its going to be a hard to choose a winner.
How do you mean withought the computer in the title?
Is the red looks ok to you now?
imo, the text becomes harder to read if we make the red darker. Still up to you :)

Oooh, I do like your entry ant! Though you need to remove the navigation menu from the bottom bar and maybe make the navigation text (on the left hand side) bigger. There is to much space ya see! Other than that... its great.
Now, if everyone is done and no one else is going to enter I will pick a winner based on fuctionalty and Style. Good luck to you all, its going to be tough for me.
Good luck all! This is tough!

Ok I removed the navigation links from the bottom and made the links on the left a little bigger. I wasn't sure if you wanted me to add more links at the bottom in place of the navigation ones that were there. So, if you have some other links in mind they can be updated easily if I win.
