The SQ7.org (http://www.sq7.org) project is an attempt to create a Free, Fan-developed game, based on the Space Quest series by Sierra Online.
We're a group of fans of the series, trying the keep the game alive, by writing, animating, and producing a Fan sequel to the games. We've been working on this for quite some time, and have recieved accolades from writers and producers of the prior SQ games, for making the attempt.
In some ways, our site is the public face of the Space Quest fan community, but it doesn't currently look it. So we're revising, one step at a time.
The first, is the logo.
We need a Logo that can serve two masters. We need to be serious, but yet fun at the same time. The idea is that we want the site to look more corporate, as if a game house were developing the title, yet still ahve an edge of fun that this sort of comedy game deserves.
The game is about a Space Janitor, Roger Wilco.. The premise is.. Aboard all those starships you see in Movies... Enterprise, The Star Destroyer, There are hundreds and thousands of people.
No all of them are captains, or starfighter aces.
There needs to be someone to unclog the toilets. That's our boy. Roger Wilco.
We're basing the game off of Sierra's Space Quest games, but we cannot use any of their images. None the less, their art gives you a decent place to look ;)
There is tons of information about the SQ games at SpaceQuest.net (http://www.spacequest.net)
We would like to be able to use the logo in as many places as possible.. Ie, The game box, the website, cups, and the like. What this says to my untrained eyes is that it should work well in few colors, and I've always heard that having a distinctive outline is importaint, but you are guys are the experts, not I ;)
Space Quest it's self has gone through many logos, most of which are seen at http://www.spacequest.net/misc/boxscans/index.shtml
The original Space Quest collection had a great logo- <img src='http://sq7.org/sqcol-anni2-front.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
It seems that things like that might be fun, yet serious.. Or at least Mock-serious.
Our original logo was as simple as <img src='http://www.sq7.org/1.0/logo.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />,but we later moved to <img src='http://www.sq7.org/interface/logo.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
For logos from other companies, I've always liked both the Sun logo, and NeXtStep Logos... <img src='http://logos.sun.com/images/corp_sunblu-small.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' /> <img src='http://www.blackholeinc.com/catalog/software/Images/AppIcons/VisitNeXT.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
I'd like the Logo to work with Either the words "Space Quest 7", or just the Letters SQ7. Either way would work fine, although I must admit a slight preference for the letters.
I'd rather not reveal any of the images from the game proper, as this is a public forum, and we don't want them to leak yet. As much as I would love to show you via e-mail, I fear that is against contest rules.
We're certainly excited about this project, and I'd glad to have your help, as a community. If any of you wanted to help with the rest of the project, I certainly wouldn't say no ;)
I'll certainly be here to answer any questions that I can. As for an End date for the contest, I'd say Febuary 3rd is reasonable.. For Legal protection, I would ask that we be given either the copyright to the final, chosen logo, or at least given blanket permission to use it as needed, and without resale. I'd love to get as much feedback as possible before the end date..I just want this to work well.
Thank you for helping to keep the dream alive..

Seeing as I can't yet reply to this post, I'll have to edit, and reply here.. I'd certainly love the solution of giving some graphics to be posted at the Designers only forum. Very good thought! Could you give me the e-mail address of the people I should talk to?
The reason I don't want to post them publically is just that I want to reveal as little as possible about the graphics for the game.. We want things to be a surprise when they are finally released, and don't want people to attack us early for them ;)
So it makes things interesting.. Id love to have them, so you get an idea of what we're doing in-game, but I'd rather nothing big from them is copied onto the public forum.. Small things (like Roger's face, etc) would probably be fine.
Does that make sense?

You could always e-mail the to Palmer or 2Square to post them in the private designer's area.

How I wish I could illustrate... :(
E1veb
01-09-2004, 11:02 AM
It's come to my attention that I was unclear in my initial request. Some people are unclear if I want a logo with an illustration (similiar to the original SQ:Collection logo), or one with just the lettering/wording (Similiar to the SUN logo, somewhat similiar to the NextLogo)
The thing is, I'm not sure. What do you think looks better? I'm looking for an emblem, for branding, basically.. I really don't know if it should have a Character on it or not!
What do you guys think?
If there was an illustration, I would assume the best canidate would be Roger (in some pose), or someone suitably janitorial, similar to our rendering below, but again, I don't know if it's necessary. I know that the SQ:Collection Logo looks great, with the character in it, and the community loves it.. But I also know that I love the Sun logo.. It's a Great logo.. It's clean. It's clever, and it's made up of distinct elements that repeat so wonderfully. So I really can't answer that question.
I just don't know anything about logo design.

Eagle, What a fun logo. It's perfectly Retro, with the angled man, yet still very modern. I'm trying to understand the right way to use it properly. Perhaps using the full circle logo for a CD cover, and then smaller for the website.
I know it would behoove me to leave constructive comments, but it would be difficult to do so reasonably. The design works very well and it's nice piece of work. It's odd.. There's nothing WRONG with the logo, but I don't know that it really keys mentally. My guess is the helmet is there to make it spacey? It seems a bit out of place, as Roger normally doesn't wear one, nor is he a gun wielder.. I know it sounds minor, but it just comes across as odd.
It's hard, because initally, I was really in love with it, but it seems to grate on me over time. But the problem is, it's still a technically well done work!
I wish I could give you a better run down of it. It's a good logo, hell a Great logo, but I don't know that it fits the character.
Thank you for your help with it. We're all here because we're old Space Quest fans. That's why we love it, and it's why we're keeping the dream alive.
I'm looking forward to seeing any revisions, or Alex's logo, as well.
Thank you both so much for helping!

Hi,
Just trying something simple here... Fitting the "S & Q" together. Let me know what you think.
Thank you, B)
E1veb
01-11-2004, 04:54 PM
I think It's a good idea of fitting them together like that, but I worry that the S looks more like a G, the way it comes in.. Is there any way to avoid that?
The "seven" also seems a bit to.. Bushy? as a font. As it it were bolded, or the like. Does that make sense?
I do like the idea, though. Clever manipulations of the letters, as in Sun's logo, always struck me as very nice logos..

Raja, I actually do like the logo; It's very minimal. It reminds me of the logo you did for the Precision wall company. Would there be any way to make the seven more pronounced? As it is, it sort of blends in a bit.
Eagle, I do see that it scales well. Thanks for pointing that out, I wouldn't have realized it myself. That does look very decent, there.
Thank you both for the help with this project. I'm so excited to be able to rejuvinate our look.

I am aparently not bright enough to under stand G)(G's logo.. Please forgive me..
Is it manipulations of the number 7 into an S? It is a cool looking logo, I just don't get it, particularly the last one. Can you explain it a bit?
Alex's approach is great, because of the way it uses teh letters to form each other.. It just feels missing, though, as if it's overly dry.. What it comes to is just that, I agree with him, that I don't know if it's exciting and funny as it is.
One of our artists, Chris Geißler, drew the following logo, which I do like very much. I've also asked him if he could make a version with just the Starcon Crest and the number 7, which I feel would look stunning..
<img src='http://www.sq7.org/temp/DO/SQ2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
I just want to give you as much visual information about what the team likes as possible.. I just want this to look right..
Maybe the right thing to do is to try to make the starcon crest into a Q, then do the S7 similiar to Alex's approach?
I'm just tossing out ideas...

Jennifer, that logo is a very nice, but I'm worried that it's too visually complex.. Am I beign crazy here? The lines on the lettering look Very cool, but when combined with the broken lines that form the Letter's sides, and the loud background, it seems a little much, at least to me personally..
Eagle, I'd like to say again, that I do like the Roger figure you made, and he looks stunning with the Green halo ;)
I don't know that I am as in love with the logo. Although it is very sun-like, I had offered Sun as an example of clever use of letters being made up of eachother, not as the angled box design proper..
I do like the way the top right logo has the flourish, But I don't know how to fix the logo it'self.
ElKootcho, that's a great looking logo. I like the way the letters fit around the triangle, and the detail work on the metallic back plate. I'm curious why you went with a fire motif. Are you implying speed? I do think it looks very cool, I'm just trying to understand.

I chose the color palette and font based on a couple of things: visual "pop" and implying action. They are colors that stand out on a light or dark background. I can certainly play around with other colors and fonts if you like.
This image is a 4-color design built in Photoshop at 300 dpi.

Hi Colin :)
Another concept; this time based on futuristic insignia...markings on the side of a dreadnought...corporation patches on spacesuits...the door sign on the janitor's closet!... ;) ;)

Thank you very much Eagle, I do like this one quite a bit. It's a very futuristic logo, easy to duplicate, and looks professional. Not that it matters, but I'm curious how many colors it is.
I can say that this most recent, and ElKootcho's, are my two favorite of the ones that have come yet.
If I were to say any one negative thing, It would be that We'd like to try to emphasize the 7 in SQ7 a bit more.. This doesn't easily mention it in the "Badge" idea.
Might it be possible to make one more version with the 7 in there?
Markbeaudry, I like this design, and it's got a very professional, and fun look, The seven makes the line of the Q, and it looks great. The two swirls in the background even make a partial Q with it. I really think that this could be a great logo if you could change the font a bit, to make it, perhaps a tad more strike, or even futuristic? The gold around the edge looks a bit strange, but I understand why you wanted it. Overall, I think it's a great logo, and I'd love to see another revision of it, if you'd be willing.
Thank you for the help!

Err...the seven is there...could you clarify? :)

Forgive me for being dim.
I was thinking about reproducing it, and was counting the colors in the gradient in my head.. I suppose I would simplify that out? Or am I missing something? Please forgive me. I really don't know much about graphic work. I just know that I need to pay per color to reproduce things on Cups, etc.
For the seven, in the most recent image.. I'm an idiot. Until you pointed it out, I didn't see that the colored image was a 7. That's why I was confused.
That's an even Better image, with it. I really like that ;)
I'm curious if other people are missing that too, or If it's evident to them. I'll certainly ask the team.
I do have one question from one of my artists, but of course you don't have to answer ;)
Which True Type Font is the one on the right of the "X2-The Threat" Screenshot - the Space Quest 7? Looks great and would certainly look even better on a screen or a model!

Sorry, my bad...the '3D' image is four colour but the three colour (flat image) would be provided. Standard practice for logos of this nature.

Eagle, That's great. Is there /anyway/ you could make the seven stand out more? No one on the team has gotten it yet until I pointed it out..
They all think it's a great logo, but unless we were beaten over the head with SQ7 all the time, it wouldn't stand out. Maybe if it were bolder, or.. Something?
dynagirl, both of those are fine logos, and I prefer the second of the two, but they don't have a certain cleverness that I would often associate with a great logo. The broom and Mop are a lot of fun, and wholly appropriate, however, and I'm smiling imagining people wearing that on a silkscreened jacket ;)
creativemeasures, The font is great, but I worry the logo is a bit plain. While I do like the tag line, I think they might be something better to put the SQ7 infront of? I don't understand why a circle of metal, I guess.. Is it a sewer cover?

Ok, here we go...
Without changing the overall design too drastically (I did try and it didn't work too well  ) I've introduced a fourth colour, red, to the original three colour design giving emphasis to the seven.
In the second set of examples (right), I've added a text reference. The psychology behind this is as follows:
The brain first sees the design and isn't concerned whether it understands the 'seven' shape or not (because there is text to read!). It then quickly reads the short text and, when the brain takes-in the whole design again, the seven registers correctly without the need to re-interpret the shape...All this happens in less than a second!
...I think... :P :D
