Hi DO Members,

Maybe you have seen the Programming Outpost section where I posted a project for some scripting on PHP/SQL for a website. I was lucky to find that programmer among the PO members

Now it is time for you Designers to also participate in this project, by designing a stunning logo for this new to build website under the name rabbitpal.com .

The website is dedicated to rescue shelters around the world, who rescue and try to rehome............yep, domestic rabbits :D
Not many people are aware of the fact that rabbits are waiting in a shelter for adoption nor that rabbits are in need of a rabbitfriend. So, the website has two goals: to stimulate people to go to their local shelter and to stimulate rabbitowners to find a rabbitfriend for their bunny.

I have tried to find rabbit logo's which I like, but  there are not many logo's out there. So this would be a great chance for any designer to show off their skill/talents (although I know already everyone here has those skills/talents). I am open for every design, the only thing I prefer are warm, soft colors (so no dark blue or dark green etc).

2 pictures of my rabbits will follow so you now how a rabbit looks like ;) Maybe they can be used for silhouette purposes or what so ever. But this is certainly not a must!

Looking very much forward to what you guys can come up with.

Regards,

Marie-Jose

first of all I want to congrat you on the idea ^~ I would have needed such a service when I had my bunny too!

I am going to work on an entry for you :)
Just one question: do you have a rather stylized logo or a logo with something cartoonish in mind?

Hello Ania,

Thanks for your enthusiasm!

Well, I would prefer a more stylized logo, because I am afraid that when using a more cartoonish logo people start associating this with fun and "great pet for kid" idea. And buy a rabbit, without thinking about what keeping a rabbit as a pet, is about. So therefore a more stylized logo, in my opinion.

But in case you have a serious cartoonish-looking rabbit, then just throw it in :D

Thanks, looking forward to you entry!

Marie-Jose

and yes, 2square, I think my bunnies are cute too! so, you cannot have them

Marie-Jose, incorporating a stylized look for the overall logo using the sheltered home for the adoption of bunnies. Used colors relevant to the pastel palette as you requested. 'Happy' afterall turned out pretty good! :P

Hi Doug ( G)(G )

First of all, thanks for entering this contest.

I know it ain't easy as rabbit logo's are seldom. And your entry is actually just what I try to avoid  and what I tried to explain to Annia.
This is too soft, too childlike if you know what I mean.

I am looking for a more sophisticated logo. Hopefully you w'll give it another try!!

Maybe I should also mentioned that with warm/soft colors I do not mean pastels, but more something like orange/warm yellow/light brown/ etc. etc.

But, Doug, you gave your fellow DO's a hint which way to go. Thanks

Regards,

Marie-Jose

ps. Happy looked at his picture and ... showed me his tongue. And you know what: I can prove it, as I have taken a picture of it.

Hi everyone,

As promised here are my remarks on all of your entries. As english is not my motherslanguage, I do hope you will understand what I mean ;)

Annia
I like the concept and the colors you used. The 'orange' one being somewhat warmer than the 'blue' one. The rabbit however in my eyes has the face of a cat. Maybe you can have a look at that? And what if we would face the rabbit with its frontlegs to us (a bit like the picture of Puk, my white rabbit). I like the effect that the rabbit is indeed standing on something (too me it looks he is standing on the earth which combines my 'world' shelter idea stuff)
And Annia, your cutie looks cute and .... a very naughty one

Pennln (Bill)
I like nr. 2 and 3 of your entry, nr 1 with the bunny to the right is not my taste. The rabbit is too clipart-like. Thanks for adding the slogan, but I have to think about that. Maybe a slogan would be better of in a banner. Besides the site is also for people who do not have a bunny yet.
The rabbit you use in your entries does look to me more like a hare (large ears, and at nr. 2 a funny tail). Maybe you can change that to normal proportion (I know there are rabbits with big big ears but for this logo I prefer normal sized ones)
Could you experiment somewhat with the color, instead of pink some orange or warm green or whatever other warm color there is. Maybe we should give the outline of the rabbit that same color?
Another option I thought about for nr. 3: Face of bun (as it is now but with smaller ears) then "rabbit" and then underneath the word rabbit the rest "pal.com" and next to the word com a bunny tail ??
Would you be so kind as also to make one with a thinner font (not that bold?) I would very much appreciate that.

Visual Sense (Diane)
Nice designs, Diane.
The one with the rabbit face is cute, but somewhat thin (the face that is) in my opinion and ... too big ears :). Also the word Pal is somewhat hard to read (could be pol) because of the font you used. I like the elegance however of the font. Could you try some other elegant fonts. And work a bit on the rabbit's face? and maybe try some other colors? Hopefully I don't ask too much now.

The design with the ears is well thinked off, but it is a bit too sober. It looks as only words. Not sure what to do about that?

The logo with the rabbit in the middle on top of text is nice, but the rabbit has no connection wih the text. It looks as if it is just put there to have some image in the logo. Sorry!

Piece-of-Mind
Yours is completely different for the others but is not what I am looking for. I think when people would see this logo they associated this with a website more focused on children and rabbits and thats is exactly what I do not want. It is a combi (for adults and children), Hopefully you are not angry with me :ermm: for being honest. If you have any other ideas, then..... great!

Well, that is it for now. Thanks for all your entries and looking forward to adjusted entries.... and some new entries????

To give you more things to think about: how about a rabbit lying on the words rabbitpal.com
or maybe use 2 bunnies in a logo? Just brainstorming for you.

Hello guys / girls,

I have looked at all the adjusted and new entries (thanks Raja & Elkootcho for entering this contest, which is not that easy at all as bunny/rabbit pics are not lying around!). I have some remarks here and there. Hopefully you are still willing to change some things ;)

Piece-of-Mind
Much better than your first design, but still not what I am looking for. The connection between house/rabbit and the text is missing. It is in my opinion somewhat too cubist. Also I actually do not want a house on the logo, because rabbits can also be kept outside. I know you opted for this because of the shelter idea behind my website, but the website is also for other rabbit related stuff.
But, thanks for trying! I admire that.

VisualSense (diane)
Well, diane, I have to admit that I prefer your first entry (with the bunny face).
The rabbit you used here, is rather strange ;). It looks to me more like the easterbun then a real rabbit.
I like the font of this entry however. Maybe you could put those 2 togeter: so font of this entry, bunnyface of your first entry (make it somewhat thicker and more bunnylike - shorter ears).
Would it be possible to make the complete logo somewhat smaller?

Annia
Nice designs! I like especially the first one (2nd ist to crowded, and the 3rd somehow looks unreal, rabbit is not lying really on the text).
Could you be so kind as to set the word "rabbit" and 'pal" somewhat further away from the bunny. And maybe you can experiment somewhat with the fonts (have a look at that of Elkootcho, his first logo), but then in the orange color?

And now about the bunnyface: I don't know what it is, but something is bothering me. I think it can be the eyes, but also the mouth (and maybe also the wiskers?)
I have attached a zip.file with 3 clipart pictures I found on the internet. They are copyright protected and cannot be used for the design but they can give you an idea of how the face should be. I have an idea, when looking at the face, that after the nose there is a little curve to the rest of his face. In the attached files you will see that there is not such a curve.

Hopefully you give it another try, because I really like both of your entries!

ps. happy is a so-called Black-and-Tan Rabbit, who when he was young won some prices. But luckily for him we bought him before he was ready to be ........

Raja
Thanks Raja, for your brainstorming. I really appreciate it!
I really do like your concept for the R. How about putting a little rabbit in trying to get a hold of that leaves and then ofcourse add the rest of the domainname?

With regard to your 2nd entry (rabbit in hart): I do not like that very much. And... I can't tell you why because I honestly don't know

Elkootcho
Hi Elkootcho, thanks for entering this contest.
I think your first design (Nr _01) has potential! It is simple, but yet very stylized. I was wondering whether you can find another rabbit for the one you are using now. This one looks too common, mmh how to explain that (as you will probably say, a rabbit is a rabbit). It looks to me as a simple clipart thing and I want something more special than that.
Could you also make one in black/orange color? The text, that is.

Design Nr_02: It is nice but I prefer your first design.

------------------------

pennyln (bill), can I expect an updated entry from you? I would reallly like to see those. Probably you did not find the time to do so. Just wanted to let you know there is no deadline for this contest.

Well, hopefully you are not giving it up yet. (and don't you think that I am a pain in the neck  )
I do appreciate everyone's efforts and all designs are of a high standard.
I have attached a zipfile with 3 rabbit cliparts I found on the internet, which I like, but which you cannot use one-on-one in your designs as they are copyright protected. But probably they will give you a good idea of what I am looking for in a rabbit.

Have a great weekend! and can't wait to see your updated entries.

Marie-Jose

Marie-Jose,

Here are soem revisions of my original designs. Hope you love them!

orion94nl
01-10-2004, 07:49 AM
Hi Bill,

Well, these adjustments have come out quite nicely, I have to say.
I like nr. 1 and nr. 3. Nr. 2 is also nice (I see that you have cut off his tail :) but compared to the others somewhat a more common logo.

So, lets stick to nr. 1 and 3.
Rabbit nr 1 (facing left) has a rather big foot. Maybe you can adjust that a little? Could you experiment somewhat with the font. I think it is now too big (In Logo nr. 3 the name fits into the rabbit and I like that). When adjusting the size you will see that the foot is too big.

And maybe some different colors ? Lets say black for the rabbit and soft orange for the text or soft blue/purple? or if you have some other color idea's, just go ahead. Maybe the otherway around (so text black, and color the rabbit?)

Rabbit nr. 2 (facing right). Is looking good. Also here maybe experiment more with font and colors?

These are very nice, good looking entries, Bill. I like them. Thanks!

Marie-Jose

Hello,

Just some small remarks here and there (but nothing Big) :)

Annia
I am very much looking forward to your new versions! Glad you understood what I meant about the face. Sometimes it is hard to express it in English.

ps. Happy is already 5,5 years old, but still behaving as a juvenile.

Pennyln (Bill)
Thanks for those quick revisions. I think I had not even typed it or you had already put them up :) I am focusing on Row 1, rabbit 1 and Row 2, rabbit 1 (so the orange tinted ones).
The problem with row 1, rabbit 1 is that the word "rabbit" and "pal" now somehow don't seem to belong together. Probably because .com is attached to "pal". I tried several things on my own computer but nothing worked out fine :(. Maybe put the word .com in a smaller font. I have not tried that.
Row 2, rabbits 1: small adjustment: give the word "pal" the same color as the word "rabbit".

As you can see, just very minor adjustments, which you hopefully are willing to do ?

Elkootcho_03
Now, there is a rabbit! I know all of your work contains no clipart what so ever, but you will have to admit that this rabbit has body now. I like it!
May I suggest you make 2 new versions (with only easy-to-do minor adjustment)
1) could you give the rabbit a beige color? I tried at home colors CFCAB1 and DBD6C1.
2) what if you would flip the rabbit. so jumping to the right. With the line from the dot to the rabbit you tried to catch his/her movement, but I would just like to see how it would work out if we flip the rabbit.
Overall: somewhat smaller the rabbit.

Hopefully this is not too much to ask, as I think they are only small adjustments.

Raja
Raja, could you let me know whether I can expect an entry from you or that you have decided to
leave it up to the other designers?

Marie-Jose

Okay I tried out a few new variations :) I also added a close up of the bunny.

01-12-2004, 12:45 PM
Hi there guys and girls,

Thanks for your revisions and for your new entries Raja and 2square. Always nice to have other ways of looking at it. I am sorry I could not post sooner, but I started working again as of today :yuk: ;) and only am available now during the evening (dutch time that is).
I am starting to think that I am a difficult lady as at the moment I am still missing the wow-logo feeling. There is potential, that is for sure. So please do not give up on me.

I want the logo to show "hope" and "warmth / happiness" as that is what all rabbits want. Maybe that helps somewhat.

So, other designers are still welcome to join this party (f.I. DBENTON25, MARKBEAUDRY, VISUALSENSE (probably I have scared you off but that was not my intention!!, so pleassse)????

Annia
Well, the face looks somewhat more of that or rabbit but still something is bothering me about it.
The close-up looks rather nice, but upons resizing to smaller proportion I think the eyes turn more into that of a cat. Now I have been thinking about your illustration in bed (I could not sleep) and maybe it is the fact that I can see the left eye (when looking to picture the right eye) of the rabbit. I have browsed through the internet to look for pictures of lying bunnies and finally found 2 of them (I have them as a zip file attached). How about turning his face more to the right so that only 1 eye is visable and the wiskers not equal to eachother but in different lengths?
make the ears somewhat longer or have one pointed another direction?

Nr. 1.3 I like the best. Could you use for the word Pal the same font and color as that of Rabbit and have the text follow the line. And if not too much asked, make the line and the .com a warm green (f.I. 84B331)

Hopefully you do not think I am annoying. I just want the rabbit to look more like a rabbit ;)

Elkootch
Yes, the logo is only for website purpose. I like the rabbit jumping the other way around (it now looks as if it is jumping into the website instead of out-of-it) but now it looks as if something is missing: just text with a nice jumping rabbit. Any idea what to do about that?

Raja

:) :) :) I like your idea of humane embrace, shelter and hill/sun but your rabbit is ....... unique. You told me so, but I was wondering, everybody is putting up a rabbitpicture, but how about some strokes here and there that when looking at it, it looks like something of a rabbit?

2square
Once for sure, If I would have chosen your entry I definitely would have had many many visitors on the website. Just post the logo here and there and all people think, he that is ........ mmm a very good idea actually of yours ;)
Thanks for the laughter

Eagle
thanks for entering this contest. It is well thought through but personally I think it is too abstract. When looking at the hand and specifically at the eye I thought about a fish (eye to the right). I think something of a rabbit, but like said before, this can be just a quick drawing/sketch or something like that, should be somehow incorporate into the logo. Would you be willing to give it another try?

Looking forward to your entries, Jennifer!

Hi Markbeaudry and Eagle,

Mark
Thanks for your submission, Mark. Highly appreciated. Your rabbitface has more the look of a lionsface but with rabbitears! A new specie maybe?? Could you see whether you can get the face more rabbitlike?

Eagle
Thanks, Eagle, for your new entry. This looks better but still there is something of a fish in it with a very long tail. Maybe make the line less thick and add a bunnytail.
I do like your absolutely warm colours!

ALL OTHER DESIGNERS
ooooh, I do hope that I have not scared you all off with my remarks/comments :o :o :o
Am I too difficult or too demanding?? Not clear enough?? Just tell me and I will have it a thought!!

I just want something which I really suits the website intention and will be recognized as: o yes, that is the logo of that rabbit shelter worldwide web stuff. Something of a rabbit must be included, either something which is drawn by a few lines here and there, but still showing a rabbit. In other contest, especially those of the petsitters, a lot of types of dogs/cats that look really like dogs/cats are shown, but somehow a real rabbit drawing is still missing in my contest.

If it would help, I have a lot of pictures of my own rabbits, which I could load-up for you guys.
Just let me know when you want some more info or some pictures to look at.

Hi Dbenton25, Eagle, VisualSense, Elkootcho and Dynagirl,

I will comment on your last entries tomorrow 15 January: I promise!! I just got home from a party which took longer than I thought and I am too tired to post my remarks.
So, tomorrow I will be all yours again :)

Regards,

Marie-Jose

ps. Diane (VisualSense), I am glad you gave it another try, your rabbit looks cool.

Hi All,

As promised, here I am. I have decided to make a small selection from designs I like but maybe need some change to get to what I want and that which I also do like but with which I do not want to continue as probably they will not bring what I want. Thanks Annia for your suggestion to choose some finalists. You can read my mind ;)

Sorry for those who did do some entries and tried several revisions, cause I know you all did your best to try to find out what I want.

So here we go:

Dbenton25 - finalist
Dave, I like your design. The way you incorporate the text into the logo is really great.
Some minor alterations are necessary and I do hope as one of the finalist you are willing to go for it ;)

Markbeaudry
A better rabbit, that is for sure, but the logo does not work for me. Sorry Mark!

wwwzone
first of all, thanks for your first entry in this contest. I was a nice thought, but again, not what I a looking for. But thanks for trying!

dynagirl
thank you for trying, Tonya, but again not something which could work for me.

Elkootch0
I know you tried to come with solutions but somehow it did not work out. Your new entry is in my eyes, too easy, not eye-catching. Sorry Elkootch! although your rabbit was not too bad.

VisualSense - finalist
Diane, I like your last design. The rabbit is cool, just needs some small alterations and something about the font. But, you are among the finalist! I am glad you returned to this contest ;)

Eagle
Although you did your best, it is not getting to what I have in mind. Sorry Eagle, because somehow you gave me hope again

Raja
You gave it a try! thanx

pennln
Bill, I liked your designs, but I have been playing myself with the text and font but did not succeed in making it to what I thought it could be. thanks for all your hard work!

and................... my third and last finalist: Annia
Yessss, although I keep bothering you about the catsface ;) I am still liking your entries. I do hope that you are willing to make some adjustments and to compete with the other 2 finalists.

Well, I think I have had every one who participated in this contest. Hopefully the finalists are willing to work with me to improve their designs. If not, then please let me know. I promise, I will not be angry ;)

I will post within a few minutes my comments on the entries of the finalists. Good luck!

Regards,

Marie-Jose

ps. I did not know I had already so many designers participating in my contest.

Dave, Annia and Diane,

This last round will not be too long, I promise. I actually want to finish things up at the end of the upcoming weekend. Hopefully enough time for you to do some alterations.

Here we go (and in no particular order):

dbenton25
Dave, as said, I like how you incorporate the text into the logo. That can stay unchanged ;)
Please make the ears of the rabbit somewhat smaller and - I am not sure whether it would work but now the ears look 'melted' in eachother, as they use the same color (lets say darker orange). Is there a way to do a little trick (maybe some shadow) to make the ears look separated from eachother?
I like the idea of the hand (shelter, safeness, protection), but some people I showed this logo did not recognize the hand as a hand, as they focused on the rabbit and then noticed something strange as, in their eyes, the back of the rabbit was missing. Maybe some shadow or adding a wrist?
About the colors, well, thats the most easiest part to change and will only be necesassary I you are the lucky one ;)

VisuelSense
Your rabbit is looking very cute, Diane. I only think it needs some brightness. How about making its tail a different color (not totally white but very soft white or so). And maybe his 'inner' ears also a lighter color. And...... could you add some whiskers??? Not cat whiskers, but real looking whiskers. I thoroughly looked at my Happy ;) and the whiskers tend to to go down in a little curve.
What we (sorry, you) also could try is to see how the rabbit would look when giving him a lighter color overall. Would you be willing to make those 2 versions?
The text is, I think, more of a problem. I like it that the rabbit his frontlegs are on the R ;)
Overall, I think the textfont is too big. I want something more compact. Could you experiment somewhat with fonts (and colors) and the placement of the text?

and

Annia
Annia, here are the remarks I posted earlier on your design nr. 1.3 which I like very much!

Hopefully my comments make sense to you! Just let me know if you don't want to continue in this contest, or do not have the time to make alterations, oke? I will not be angry, just a little bit sad!

Regards,
Marie-Jose

hello marie-jose!

I feel flattered that you devoted so much thoughts and feedback to my logo :) Sorry that it took me so long to post another review but it took me some time till I came up with something I like. BTW I really appreciate that you helped me so much by posting pics for me to help me understand what you want to have.
I really enjoy this contest.. no matter how it ends :)

Glad that you picked now some finalists too. I wasn't really sure for a while if my design is still the right direction cos so many people posted different styles and you seemed to like them too. So I was kinda insecure and puzzled

Anyways..here is my revision. I changed according to your feedback and give you some color variations for the fur too.

Edit: Oh You wanted green .. changed that now!

Hi Marie-Jose

I've made the ears smaller and, instead of introducing a new color or shade, I've added a bit of distance between the ears. I know you worry that the ears look "melted" together, but I think it reads pretty well. Part of the aesthetic of ths style is that not every "I" is dotted and "t" crossed. The rabbit's form is implied by as few shapes and colors as possible. If I add shading between the ears, then I'll need to add shading between the head and body and back leg and body. Pretty soon, you'll be wondering why I didn't just use a photo. :P

The same thing applies to the hand. The shape of the hand is implied by integrating the negatve space with the rabbit shape. Adding a wrist will simply make the hand look disembodied. And coloring it in will betray the initial intention of keeping the image simple by utilizing the negative space. So, my solution, which I hope you'll find effective, was to add a shadow between the hand and the rabbit's body. I think this helps to give form to the hand and visually separate it from the rabbit.

Let me know if this is working better for you, or if you'd like me to explore some more solutions.

Thank you,

-Dave B)

Hello Annia, Dave and Diane,

Thanks for your new revisions!

I had a good look at them and had the opportunity, as it was quiet at the office, to let the logo's pass my mind. I came to the conclusion I had to choose between a "logo" and the "cute" versions. And that was not that easy, because I know how rabbitlovers are melting away for 'cute' stuff.

I decided to go for the more 'logo' side because of my intention with the website. So, I declare dBenton25 the Winner of this contest.

But before I let this contest disappear into all the others, I would like to explain to you, Annia and to you Diane, what made me come to this decision. I think I owe you that.

Annia: I liked your designs, you know that. That's why I have tried to help you with a lot of pictures and other stuff, because I liked your way of illustrating and your enthusiasm. And it hurts me to not choose your design. You kept the contest going and never thought: "well that is it, now I stop cause that MJ is not making sense and driving me crazy". And I know you are a real animal lover too. I saw that in your illustration and your devotion to make the logo work for me.
Your last designs where going into the right direction, but still I think things could be better. Probably if we would take another week or so, we would have reached a higher level but I just do not want to go on and on and on, asking you to change this and that with and then in the end maybe choose someone else.
So, I am truly sorry, Annia, but hopefully you will understand!

but...... Annia, you know, I am looking ofcourse for some content to fill my website when it is up and running and think that you and your bunny Coco can help me with that ;)
I will PM you about that.

Diane
I was very happy you returned to the contest with this cute rabbit you designed and your last entry shows an even better rabbit (great whiskers). But although you tried and I tried we did not succeed in making the rabbit more connected to the text. In my eyes, it stayed a rabbit and the words rabbitpal. I think that it would have taken more time to maybe come to a solution for that, but like with Annia, I don't want to go on asking for changes here and there.

So, Dave, congratulations, I will PM you shortly.

Annia, Diane, thanks for all your efforts and for making this contest one of the best!

Kind regards,

Marie-Jose

As always, congrats David !

As Mark stated, very brandable ! It reminds me care and human touch. The rabbitīs head looking backward to the humans hand is a great idea. :D

Congrats to Diane and Annia to became finalists ! (winners without a prize)

As the programmer of the new rabbitpal site, iīve tried to stay outside this competition for many reasons (the most problable reason is that iīve lost for Davidīs entry  - as two contest before when we were finalists. :P ) and tried to look with other eyes what came along the timeline. Iīve saw great entries, "bīs" as rabbitīs ears and a dot as nose ! I saw how itīs difficult for a CH to choose one from a great dozen entries without hurting anyone and to take this winner design for years, representing itīs business or organization.

Great choice Marie-Jose ! ;)

Next time, you can choose another nickname for you: "Mrs. feedback !" :lol2:

Next time, you can choose another nickname for you: "Mrs. feedback !"

Mr. Hheine,

Mrs. Feedback thinks that it is just decent to give feedback :) and to let finalists know why their designs just did not make it.

I went through ...x contests before starting one myself and how often did I see: please give me your feedback, hee, what about a feedback, or Palmer explaning contestholders that designers work harder when they receive feedback.
So, Mrs. Feedback decided it was time to act accordingly.
and I am convinced that is why soooooooo many designers decided to give it a try. Isn't it??

marie....

Mrs Marie-Jose Feedback,

You got it... Every designer here is a pro with a distinctive style and talent. We understand that we can't please everyone all the time, so we rely on the contest holder's feedback to guide us. With your clear and concise comments, you made it easy to service you and that's why you got the logo you wanted. Hopefully other contest holder's will see what you did and employ the same technique.

Congrats david! :flowers: just what Henry said!!

I saw it already when MJ chose you as one of the finalists that yours is the most brandable logo (and I probably would have picked it myself before mine.. seriously!!)

MJ ..  for 1 A feedback over the contest! So far I've only took part in one contest before yours that took ages to finish but nice feedback was given as well and I think that kept the designers encouraged and happy to go on (I think that was the reason too why so many designers joined your contest as well). So a big big thanks for your great contest.

And I am not mad that you didn't choose my design :) As mentioned above I probably would have picked David's logo too. But I still kept working on my design and stick to my line. Cos after all you'll never know what others think.

I wish you all the luck with your project and hope it will get as many response as it deserves! Hope you come back with another contest soon!

PS: How did you know my bunny is called coco? :) Did you check my site? ^_^

:off: henry .. Did your parents name you after the the great writer Heinrich Heine? :) Thats why I came up with Herny.. heh
