Sean, there is a problem with your requirements that is prohibiting the designers from entering.

You have 3 different skills that are needed to complete your project...

-Logo Design
-Web Design
-Print Design

Normally you would have 3 contests for these separate items.

Palmer,

I have no problem to separate logo and print design. But if there is no satisfying entry by the deadline, I would request a refund. Please delete your post as it sounds like a lot of money and ... ;) Thanks!

Tim,

Thanks a lot for posting the first design. Great work here. I like its simplicity, and wish a little more details. Please look at my first two of my three example sites.

I do not like the sky pictures on the top. If we can make the menu bar and frame a little more refined that'll be great. Please also see the example sites for the fonts.

Thank you very much for working with me on this one.

Palmer,

Thanks for helping me out on this one! I haven't decided on my logo design yet. So for now, please ignore the logos from the other posts. I like the clean design. I am not sure about the dividing blue lines on the page. If you browse through the first two example sites I posted, you will see the kind of layout that I really like.

I also prefer the menu line up on one line somewhere on the top.

Thank you!

Anne,

Thanks for the great work!!!

I compared the two entries for quite a few minutes trying to figure out the difference between them. And I have to say I like the first one better for the following reasons:

1. The menu bar looks more 3d feel.
2. It is easier to see the menu bar fonts on the first design than the second.

Oh, the company's name is Avenu International LLC, there is no ending E in Avenu.

Please see the example sites that I posted. Is your design centered, left aligned or like designoutpost 100% of the width (which I do not like since mine will not be a content site)?

On the top menu fonts, I was wondering if it will look good if we use some font type like you used for "Lastest News"?

How could we dress it up a little bit? Could you please add a little arraw that works with "More" link?

Overall, it is very effective work, very clean style. The only thing is that I feel the top portion looks too flat and empty. Please take a look at this example, http://www.sgrlaw.com/terms.asp , if we could do something about it, that'll be great!!!

Thank you, Anne!

Anne

Thank you for the feedback

I will make the requested changes to the design later today.

EDIT: I was thinking a centered site as a think that might work best. I can of cource make it left aligned if you think that would work better.

Anne

Anne
02-06-2004, 08:06 AM
I've made some changes.

- I've changed the font in the menu (same as in Latest News)
- made some small adjustments to the top part. I didn't change it to mutch because I think the new logo might spice it up a lot and it's easyer to make it look better when you have a logo to go after.
- added arrows and Read more links to the news section
- and some small changes in the content area just to make the reading more interesting :D

Let me know if you want to se some more changes and I will be happy to do it for you. Maybe you want to see some more colors, but I think it might look better with the colors the way it is. Sometimes less is more :D

prelude785

That's great! A couple of suggestions

1. The picture on the top, next to the logo and slogan. I don't like to put the people's pictures there. Can you make something more abstract here? The current one certainly does not look the best.

2. The black part on the left. Will it look better in dark blue (or any other color, I don't like the black)? Should we dress it up by using some bevels?

Thank you for your help!

pengrus

Yes, Carlos! :D Thanks for your entry. And I like it too. Here are some questions/suggestions:

1. I think the big thing is the picture on the top next to the logo. Don't you think we need to better picture here? And as I mentioned in the previous post, I like to see some artistic picture there. I understand it takes some time to find or create it, but it may be the deciding factor for this style.

2. The "S" line might be changed to accommodate the final logo and make it look better, right now like it is, it does not seem to integrate with the whole page very smoothly.

3. What are the pictures on the left on the blue bar such as Company News and Quick Contact?

Sine it will be center aligned or left aligned, please post the design so that I can also see the page background color.

Overall I think it's a good job. We still get three days to refine them.

Thank you!!

Sorry, looks like I need to extend the deadline again for the template design. :( The reason is the header part. All of the authors did a great job! However, I really do not like the header part with most of the designs. As I said in previous posts - I do not like big picture in the header, and they do not really stand out - most of them are buildings, can we get something creative or get something simple and elegant?

PLEASE take a look at the three sample sites that I posted in the first post in this thread, look at their header design and try to go with their style while designing your own one.

I understand that part of the reason is because my late decision on the logo. But let's give a few more days to get the header part redesigned.

I greatly appreciate your effort in this design.

Thanks for the entry. Some suggestions:

1. Let's move embed the logo that you put behind the navigation bar to the bottom right blue part where you put the content, and change the company name on the top back to what appeared on your first design.

2. And put the blue logo on the footer at a small size.

3. It is spelled "Avenu International", no e with avenu.

Are you referring to any particular pictures?

pengrus

Not any particular pictures. What I was thinking was when I create other pages in the future, I would have two pictures ready. As the way you show them on the page, is that one picture over the other, or we need to combine two pictures into one then put it into the template?

Please have them done as 2 separate images using css layers, that way, it is much easier for me to add or change pictures later on. Also I would like the random picture rotating script in it so I will have several sets of pictures to show.

Please let me know when you have these ready.

Thanks!

Palmer
02-17-2004, 08:54 AM
Sean, the random rotating pictures would be outside of the requirements of this project and would be an additional charge if Nemeliza was chosen as the winner. I did that for you in the contest I won simply to do you a favor.

It sounds like you are asking him to convert it to HTML/CSS and show you the revision. This is not a problem if you are declaring him the winner but it is not something he should be doing at this point if he is not being declared the winner. It is a very time consuming request and above what should be expected of any designer here.

Thanks for understanding.

Palmer,

Whether it is a favor, an additional charge, or mutual understanding, I believe it should be something between the contest holder and the designer. I don't understand why you have to step in here, really. There are plenty of scripts for this function readily available and it really shouldn't be a problem for a skilled designer.

Thanks for understanding your customer.

I'm stepping in because you are asking for something outside of the original requirements of the contest. It also sounds as if you would like him to convert the mock-up to html/css which is also above and beyond what is required at this stage of the contest. JavaScript is not part of every designers skillset and would be considered a programming function in this case.

If you want to declare him the winner then I am sure he would be happy to spend the time to convert it. I am saying it is not something he should be required to do now.

It is my job to step in when I see an issue that needs attention. That is part of my duty to the operation of this site as the Administrator. I do the same thing for the clients when a designer is not following guidelines.

I'm sorry that you don't see this as something that is needed. I do.

Palmer:

You might not have seen Nemeliza's response and here it is:

<!--QuoteBegin-Nemeliza+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td>QUOTE (Nemeliza)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I vbelieve you can do this with 2 seperate images using css..layers?, ill look into it.
Please do not tell us what to do or what not to do - to charge or not to charge. That's really something between the designer and contest holder and they will work together to reach an agreement. If there is any disputes or disagreement, we will come to the administrator for a solution. But this is not something that broke the rule, but a normal part of the process. I am just following up to his answer and that will be one of the factors that determines the winner.

There is no way a client can specify every technical aspect in the requirement. That's just the beauty of project management/development. But, fair enough, I now know your expectation of your designer team and your standard.

Let's end our conversation here. I also would like to end this contest as early as I can.

Come on lads lets all calm down.

I have looked into it and should be able to make the images using CSS so they can be 'stacked' on top of each other, however the javascript to generate a random image to display is beyond my scope, there may be scripts freely available to do this but how well they will 'fit in to my design' is another matter.

I dont mind displaying the images as a stack but I cannot take responsibility for a script which will rotate them.

Nemeliza,

Could you please post the revised home page and the subpage please? I am really under the time pressure and trying to wrap up this project and would greatly appreciate your earliest response. I couldn't reach you today.

Thank you!

Sean
