Hi everyone,

This is a two-part job because we need both a name and a logo! This is part one, the name ($50) - but please keep in mind that if we get a great name we will most likely be posting part two (the logo for another $100 so there's potentially up to $150 up for grabs altogether) once part one is completed. We have been brainstorming names for about a week, and are looking for some fresh ideas.

We are looking for a name for a game development company. We are an established company with several quality titles already on the market, but we don't want any references to our current name or identity - the existing company will continue as a game tool developer. The new company will use some of the (very cool) technology developed by the parent company, which allows us to have very rich content and much smoother animation than many of our competitors... so our focus is really on producing very polished, quality (fun!) games.

The company will produce "A" grade boxed games sold in stores, ie no cheap and nasty shareware. Some of the games are based on well-known licenses (eg household name movies) and others introduce their own new characters. So, as well as appealing to gamers (edgy and fun) the name has to work for publishers and licensors such as Disney, Electronic Arts, Warner Brothers. They will be looking for someone who will produce something fun for the consumer, so it doesn't have to be pin striped but not too rude!

We would really love to register (companyname).com if possible but realise it may have to be (companyname)games.com or something similar. Extra brownie points for anyone who can come up with something that works as a domain name on its own! :-)

Either a composite name (putting existing words together eg Big Blue) or something made up (Sony) is fine, but if it's a made up word we'd love to have a rationale to explain to people why we chose that name, eg Sony comes from the latin sonus meaning sound... We would like something with as few syllables as possible, 4 is probably the maximum.

Here are some names we've come up with but rejected for various reasons:

Game*****: loved the edginess, but in the end we think it's slightly "too much"
Slothburger: this one really made us laugh, but it's just too silly
Critical Hit: we really loved this one but it's already in use by at least two game related companies. We liked the duality of the name - eg the killing blow versus a chart topper.
Crunchtime: we thought of this because it's an industry term when you get to the end of a game project and there's still lots of work to be done... but don't think it has consumer appeal and also too negative from a publisher's perspective.

The name we go with does not have to be similar to any of these, we are looking for a fresh perspective and the above are just some examples to show our thinking.

Please feel free to post any questions!

(Edit) Sorry, I forgot to mention the deadline - we are under some time pressure as we plan to attend an industry exhibition, but we also want to get it right so we're putting a tentative deadline of Sunday 15 Feb on this. Please indicate if you're interested in entering!

I have also increased the prize money slightly - and clarified part 2.

Thank you Mark and MOZ for your very quick replies! I will be collating all the responses and then discussing them all with "the boss" once a day, so I will post feedback daily.

I've also compiled a list of words that we think describe the brand (in no particular order):

fresh
exciting
dynamic
quality
fun
smart
creative

We would like the name to express these qualities.

Just to clarify: I wasn't being rude with the White Whale idea -- it was in reference to MobyDick. (I guess the system thought that was a no-no.) ;)

A few by me:

These are made up (fun)
:
Project Hatch

StrataGem

StrataG

ATomiZ

Qspin

Dyvision

Crakk

Zspot

Grandbastic

Woot

OK now these name have background (kind of though about how cars get their names. I.E Toyoda's "Cressida" It goes back to greek mythology, even Shakespeare did a play about the myth entitled, "Troilus and Cressida")

Ok so here are a few

OSSA : A mountian in Greece (name of power and strengh)

Orpheus : In Greek mythology was a musician who's music possessed magic power (chould modify it to Xorpheus ---Kind of adds an edge.)

Vulcan : Greek god of Fire and metalworking, was also the husban of Venus (could modify to Xulcan or Zulcan)

Deadalus : Was an artist and inventor who built the labyrinth for King Minos in Crete. (I like this one a lot ;) ) James Joyce used this name in his novels too. A character that really grew-up and came into his own ---aka an artist on the inside

That's what I have for now. I'll be thinking,

Wow, you guys are really on fire - keep them coming, this is great!

We've been very impressed with the volume of suggestions, with over 100 names I hope you'll forgive us for not commenting on each individual one - but we'll try to give each one of you something to work with.

First, some general comments:
We'd prefer a name without intentional misspellings as this is likely to confuse people who only hear the name and then search for us under "Games" but never think to try "Gamez" (for example). We also feel that it doesn't really convey our focus on quality, even though the "gamer" scene is big on creative spelling it's not really something the companies providing the products get into. Similarly some of the names have quite negative meanings (eg "Mygrane"), which would need to be balanced by a bigger funny or funky twist.

Some of the names are really clever, but we feel don't really work if you try to put them into a sentence, eg FatLadySings is a great concept but not sure about "FatLadySings released a new game..." (Fat Lady would work in the sentence but doesn't carry the same punch)

Some eg Eclipse, NextLevel and RedLine would be phenomenal names, but unfortunately are also really popular and being used by many companies in games or otherwise. We're hoping for something unique.

There were also some clever references to pop culture (Dude, you bought our game and HAL) but we a) think they may not stand the test of time and/or B) don't want to get sued ;-) Funster would be good if it wasn't for Napster...

Some of the foreign language suggestions were really good, but we don't want to claim a link to another culture that we don't have, especially the Japanese ones - there are some great Japapnese game companies, and it seems a bit like hero worship to put a Japanese name on an Australian company ;-) (Please, no Kangaroo or Boomerang references in future name suggestions) We also think that our mostly Western audience may have problems working out how to pronounce some of the names (eg juegoSoft - we liked WayGo better). Having said that, we reckon a culture like classical Greek that's many years dead can be hijacked by anyone so we're open to those sorts of references as long as they sound fun and not too academic - we liked the Orpheus reference but think it's too similar to Morpheus from Matrix, and Vulcan is a bit too, well, Trekkie!

While we do want something a bit edgy, we've decided not to push the envelope too far - which is why we decided against our own idea of Game*****. So names like SmakGames are a bit too close to the line because of the drug reference. And we think Fingerjoy sounds a bit rude :-)

Because we put a lot of effort into making sure our games are top quality, we're not keen on something like SlapDash or RoughEdges which kind of implies the opposite without anything positive to balance it out.

We like the colour/animal type names, especially Purple Squirrel, but they don't really say much about us as a company (except maybe that we're creative?) We really want to convey some of the values/feelings I posted earlier.

We liked the following (in no particular order):
Eclipse, fatladysings, NextLevel, RedLine, Wetdog, YourTurn and in paricular we loved Rubbergun - we like the reference to something that you "pretend" with, ie it doesn't really kill you, it works on a number of levels.

We think these have potential and can possibly lead somewhere:
brainbouncer, ChalkLineGames (we had previously considered John Doe with a chalkline as the logo because of all the anonymous people that end up dead in games), CONSequencials, FriedMindYoung (a bit long and maybe FriedYoungMinds works better but we like the idea), levelkill (we think ___kill... something... could work, we like the "level" as in "on level ground" angle but not as in game level), Megalith, Project Hatch (Project _____ ...something?), Rock/Paper/Scissors Software (absolutely love the reference but it's looooong), ShootToKick (clever play on Shoot to Kill but Kick doesn't really make much sense to us?), Vidopolis - the video reference sounds more to do with movies, but we like the polis part (not Gameopolis though!)

What an amazing start - we're very excited and can't wait to see what else you guys will come up with!

Thanks everyone, more good suggestions!

We're really looking for something evocative rather than descriptive. I'll comment on a few more that will hopefully convey some of our thinking. It's actually quite hard to express what exactly we do/don't like in a useful and constructive way that will help you guys think of something closer to what we want, as it's all so abstract! Please don't be offended by what may seem like too many negative comments - naming a company is *really* hard (that's why we asked for help) and we do appreciate all your efforts.

We quite like the sound of Diversion Therapy but it's long... and also an actual psychological approach so, hmmm, not sure.

DogEar is cute and funny, but dog-eared things are usually old and undesirable!

Inertia Games again is a good concept, but as you say inertia is all about changing and just keeping going in whatever way you are, which is not really what happens in games ;-) We want to convey the idea of excitement and activity.

Wedgie, Hoopla and Hot Diggety are too... frivolous? As I said we don't want pin-stripe, but it still has to convey the idea that we take what we do seriously.

We somewhat like Chimera although I keep thinking of Chimney when I see it written down. We think Phoenix names are a bit overused in games and IT.

Thumbtopia is clever! Maybe without the "b", Thumtopia? Hmmm.

We like Burncycle, is it an actual term? Sounds like something that would happen when the space shuttle takes off which captures the dynamic, action, exciting aspects nicely - and it's cool rather than techy or try-hard.

Lucid Arts and Dreamforge are too close to Lucas Arts and Dreamworks for comfort... we don't want to be seen to be imitating other companies.

Numb Thumbs, Mindfry and Kalus are good too in the "addictive gaming" sense, but seem just a bit too off-putting - we don't want to push it so far as to tell people that our games will damage them. I know it's a very difficult balance between cool damage words and off-putting damage words!

There's something about Project Spawn we like but I think it's that we like both words, Project and Spawn, but maybe not together? Spawn in particular has a lot of potential.

Liquid Bullets... like the "liquid" part. Liquid (something) could work!

Thanks again - hope that the feedback is useful - anyone else want to have a go?

FatLadySings is a great concept but not sure about "FatLadySings released a new game..." (Fat Lady would work in the sentence but doesn't carry the same punch)

My new favorite to push...

REM State
Believe it or not, remstate.com is available. I'm sure everyone knows what that is, but if not, it is specifically linked to dreaming and...ahem...morning "stimulations", as well as virtual paralysis of most major muscle groups.) Now you simply can't beat that for a kick butt gaming company.

And the "burncycle" suggestion:

Well, as far as I can tell, BURN CYCLE is a bit of a loose term.

1) Appears to be an industry term for the cycle by which a combustion engine (specifically, one cylinder) fires, ignites, creates the piston movement, and exhausts.

2) Also refers to time for which some sort of thrusting engine is fired (NASA)...this term is being thrown around a bit regarding the Columbia disaster.

3) Also a term referring to burning land for aggricultural purposes.

4) Unfortunately, it also appears to be the name of a game (one I've never heard of, and I play way too many games). I found this on it...

Game Name: "Burn: Cycle"

Released: 1995 (complete release info)
Published By: Philips Interactive Media, Inc.
Developed By: Trip Media
MobyScore: 3.6 (out of 5)
Platforms: DOS, Windows, Windows 3.x

Genre: Action, Adventure
Perspective: 1st-Person Perspective
Non-Sport: Cyberpunk / Dark Sci-Fi, Interactive Movie, Puzzle-Solving, Shooter, Video Backdrop

It's supposedly an older game (1995 obviously), in which you, a "data thief" take on an FPS adventure to rid yourself of some virus, and you have 2 hours to do it. Hmm, sounds kinda fun. All that is out there on it are cheat pages.

5) It's also the title of a song by Smashmouth.
------------------

Even more ideas:

Wifflebat (Games, Software, Media, etc.) (convey the potential for violence yet still be G-rated for Disney)

Level Edge (.com/.net are taken, but not active)

Wide Glide Games (.net)

Liquid Reality (apologies if this has been suggested previously)

Wildcard Media (?, just threw that in as a wildcard guess!)

Just a suggestion to everyone...

When I'm thinking about game developer names, I'm thinking about the opening cinematics at the beginning of the game. Some of the names we've suggested have excellent possibilities for cinematic sequences, and some do not. I'm not sure if that is important for this particular client, but I would think it is...

One opening cinematic I remember very well is the very cool Digital Anvil opening. It starts dark, then you hear a repeated crashing of metal on metal, which then appears to be a hammer on an anvil from a low angle. Every time the hammer hits, sparks fly and lights flash through the anvil like current through a circuit board. That conveys the name very well, and obviously in a memorable format.

Hope that helps! :D

p.s. BurnCycle has great potential for a nice opening. Start dark, then a blast of intense flame, and as it dies away "burn cycle" appears charred and burning with glowing edges on the screen. Cool eh? Sorry for the edit!

Hi again everyone,

First, please accept my sincere apologies for the delays in wrapping this up. Unfortunately we STILL have not decided on a name - there were plenty of great suggestions but we didn't get one that we felt was 100% for us. Yes, we are being super picky . We have decided to award the prize to the person we felt put in the most effort in terms of making suggestions, and also hitting very close to the mark of what we were asking for. Hopefully everyone will be OK with that approach. It was actually a close decision but the winner is... Cursal!

Thanks again everyone, and I hope you won't feel like we've stuffed you around. Hopefully you will get plenty more naming contests after this that will be a bit easier!

Hi Moz,

It really wasn't a case of any one name standing out as the winner - otherwise we would have chosen that one specifically and developed it further. Like I said it was a close decision with several people contributing well, we just felt Cursal responded best to the replies I posted and also came up with a large number of names that fit with the brief we were able to give. I would have to go back through my notes to find which names exactly we liked from everyone, and you would not believe the amount of time and volume of writing we needed to consider each submission! I realise you guys spent a lot of time coming up with names, but I'm willing to bet we spent at least as much thinking about them

Hope that gives you some indication, sorry I can't be more specific.

Thanks for the reply it is appreciated. As for the time I do realize how difficult it is to create an identity and how long the process is. I have personally been involved in several strategy sessions dealing with the software & music industry. It's quite frustrating, as you know there's good and bad in every name brought up. And you know Alex once you find the name 10 more will come to mind! Good luck my friend and thanks for the fun. Hurry up and pick that bad boy and let us get started on creating you that killer logo

Cool

Alex, think you could name the top 3-5 you found the most likely to fit your operation?
Also when you do go with a name do you think you could add it to this post at a later date so we know what you finally decided on? I am very curious to what it will be.

Thanks again for noticing the time spent.

Best wishes,
--Brian
