View Full Version : Campus Map Contest - $400 *Project Over*
(Admin code added by Palmer - L2605410J)
campusmap contest
prize:$400
deadline: Thursday, March 18th (extended by 3 weeks)
description: Design a map for our ministry campus.
contest Web Site: http://campus.mediajuice.net
introduction
We basically need a decent map of our campus with all the creativity that can be found at Design Outpost. To help facilitate the contest, we have designed a special web site (listed above) with over 200 pictures of our entire campus so that you can best design what we are looking for.
what we need
We are looking for a creative 3-dimensional map similar (this is only an example of another map) to the following (try to avoid using numbers.):
<img src='http://campus.mediajuice.net/albums/userpics/10001/normal_toccoacampus.JPG' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
[more examples (http://campus.mediajuice.net/thumbnails.php?album=2)]
details of map
The map needs to include:
1) Basic Design of the buildings (with labels)
2) Landscape/Greenery (not specific, but grass & trees, etc)
3) Roads
how we need it
We need this map in 2 different versions. (1) in a version that can be posted for web and possible large posters and (2) a simple version that can be available for sharp half-a-page black/white print outs. The color and black/white can be the same just as long as they both appear clear and look sharp.
:smart: map skeleton (Location Directory)
The following map is our best attempt to design a map of what the campus looks like. Throughout the map you will see dots with a number by it. The number represents all the main locations that our photographer took pictures. On the web site (listed above), you will see all of the pictures categorized by the number illustrated on the map below (larger picture available on our web site):
<img src='http://campus.mediajuice.net/albums/userpics/10001/normal_mainmap.JPG' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
[enlarge... (http://campus.mediajuice.net/albums/userpics/10001/mainmap.JPG)]
additional details
We will be monitoring this contest and giving feedback. We will also use the post immediately after this one to give additional details that are answered throughout this contest. To keep this contest fair, please do not email/PM me with questions, but have them all posted here in the forums.
updates... (updated: 3/11/04)
- we do not need a FLASH map, just a standard overall graphic.
- The "Toccoa Falls" map above is not our campus. It is an example of what we are looking for, not the actual map of our campus.
- Just added addtional pictures of Pool and our new re-modeling of our Mission Control building. These are not yet included in the master ZIP file we have available for download.
- 2/26 :: Deadline pushed back by 1 week to Thursday, March 4th
- 3/11 :: Deadline pushed to MAXIMUM DEADLINE: March 18th

hi Erik;
I have some ques.
1- you want the map in 3d, so what is the final file map file formate, FLASH?
2- is this an interactive map, or just a still photo?
I'm very excited about this, but if you could give us more details about the out put formate, this would be fine.
3- there is 60+ locations in your site maps, while the map you attached here shows 32 locations?!
I'm not sure if I understand this correct, but here's what I thought of, you want a 3d interactive map for you campus , with the ability to to click on the location and check some info on the clicked location and see some fotos, right?
Thank you for your questions.
Although Flash is a great idea, that is not what we're looking for at this time. This is just going to be a still photo of a map.
The format needs to be similar to the illustrations that I provided on our web site.
Regarding the extra locations on campus, the above map only shows what you should cover in your map. There is an entire back yard of campus that we are not including in this project (we may contract the winner for a future bid to add the back half later). If there are addtional questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

okay, so it's a still foto, that clears things more.
but I still have more questions.
for the first request (Basic Design of the buildings (with labels))
1-what do you mean by basic designs of buildings, do you mean just block design of the buildings?
2-also the labels, are we going to number each building or add the building label over it?
3- you mentioned that you want a map that is similar to the one you attached above, so absicly you want the same map, but much cleaner grafix, right?
-if so, is this new map going to be in the same camera angel like the one attached above?
I'm sorry if I ask too much, but you know 3D is not as easy as anything else ;)

Erik - are you open to any of these styles?
Allow me to answer some of your questions....
1-what do you mean by basic designs of buildings, do you mean just block design of the buildings?
Design the buildings similar to the ones shown in the samples. Try to avoid block as much as possible and use detailed buildings. (again, as much as possible). If you need more pictures of something, just ask and we'll upload them.
2-also the labels, are we going to number each building or add the building label over it?
I would like to see labels on the buildings instead of numbers. If the design looks better with numbers, try it out and let me see... but do try to avoid numbers.
3- you mentioned that you want a map that is similar to the one you attached above, so absicly you want the same map, but much cleaner grafix, right?
Correct. As ElKootcho stated, all the samples are located here of what we're aiming (and yes, as clean as possible). Some of the samples we listed are a little rough, but all the same.
Samples here: http://campus.mediajuice.net/thumbnails.php?album=2
Just added addtional pictures of Pool and our new re-modeling of our Mission Control building. These are not yet included in the master ZIP file we have available for download.

Hi Erik;
sorry for the delay, but our 3D designer had to travel abroad for 2-3 days, but he promised to get the our entry done in time.
No problem. Thanks for following up.
Not that Web Rhino is not enough, but is there anyone else participating in this contest?

Thanks Erik.
I´ve finished the 3d modeling yesterday. I´m rendering it.
Do you have any idea of the dimensions of the campus. I´m using a generic 3x5 proportion.
Do you want some cars, people or any other elements ?
Thanks,
Henrique.

Hi, Erik.
Ok, let's crack the ice.
here's the overview of what has chances to be my entry :)
The rough geometric and semitransparent background image is the 3D sketch. The three buildings to the north and the area around them are partially rendered.
Comments are welcome. THat is: do you like the angle? Do you like the general direction where I'm heading? I'm going to post a closeup of the buildings so you can see the rendering with more details.
Cheers!

This is going to be fun to watch  Nice work Alex.
Excellent work so far.
To answer hheine... cars people and other elements are nice (and please, if you can include them, great). As far as the dimensions of the campus, could you please expound upon your question... Im not sure I understand.
Alex... the rendering looks good and the final render of the buildings you have done so far look 98% to detail as it is so far. As far as your angle... I like it and think that if you could get everything in it, that its a sure bet.
Please, if anyone has any further questions (or if I didnt answer them well here), please throw ask. I would be happy to answer any and even have more pictures available to you.

02-26-2004, 07:35 PM
Erik,
what exactly would you like to see in the 2% that still lack? Do you want shadows/relieve on the walls? Or maybe more details on the roofs?
I got problem with the roofs :) We only have 3 air photos, and most of the information about the roofs comes from there. But the photos aren't exactly very detailed... But as the plan is a look from above - the roofs practically convert themselves into buildings' "faces" :) Can I use my imagination to detalize the roofs?
AlexKogan
02-26-2004, 07:37 PM
Hey, Palmer, thanks  ;)
The remaining 2% is not quality (you have done great there), but just the placement of back doors, etc (nit picky stuff that we can focus on later if necessary but is not relevant for this map). What you have rendered is above any expectations that I had, keep up the great work.
EDIT: Alex, as far as the roofing goes: I noticed that it is now obvious to see the addition to the building that we made by the change of tone in the roofing (as it is apparent in reality). Could you carry over the look of the rear of that building to the front of it.
AlexKogan

Could you carry over the look of the rear of that building to the front of it.
You mean - the roof? Or the building? And which one :) The one that has the roof half-painted? So the farer side of the roof is the right one, is it?

I'm sorry, yes.. just the roof of the long administration buidling where it seems "half painted". Eliminate the front white portion of the roof and extend the nice rear portion of the roof to 'cover-up' the white part. I hope that didnt sound too confusing.

...a close up.

Hi there, Erik! :)
Ok, mine is nearly finished. Attached is the overall view. I'll post a few detalized shots. There are no labels yet. This and the football field is what's left to do.
I have two questions.
1. Is the "football field" a soccer field or an american football field? :)
2. I'm not quite sure about the roads in the "back yard", where the gazeboo, pool and courts are. I haven't put anything there, just beacause I'm not sure where the paths come from and where do they end up. If you want the paths to be there - can I ask you to sketch a rough plan of the roads in the back yard? I just ned to know where do the paths connect to the rest of the roads on the plan.
Ok, here goes the overview:

I'm sorry I couldn't post the whole map at my server - it's having problems with traffic, so I kind of obliged to post it all here

...a close up at the halls.
The complete picture format is 60x60 cms and these close-ups are 100% size. However, the whole thing is a vector, so it can be upscaled without loosing quality to any reasonable size :)

..and another close up :)
COmments and corrections are welcome! :D

Thank you for your posts... I will be posting feedback shortly.
Alex, to aid in your questions
1. It's an american football field (a very raw one at that) with no end field and no goal posts. It just a square block of grass that has white lines occassionally (When we apply it). It does, however have four (4) football stadium lights (odd) that are 2 on each side of the field.
2. I will use your drawing and add a very poor sketch of the paths that go toward the back. I will post later this evening.
And now some thoughts...
Firstly, let me tell you what I am going to do. I am going to use each of you as an example for each of you to work off of. I hope this won't tread on toes, it just needs to be perfect before I show the final drawings to the board. My job is to save them from doing that, and help each of you present your best work. Right now, each of you are right on. The only thing that is off is just the following:
(1) alignment of buildings
(2) alignment and scale of locations compared to other locations.
(3) alignment of sidewalks (not nearly as important and we will focus on this shortly after the above two if there is time)
It is important that both of you use the following map to fine tune your locations (http://www.openmarket.com.br/DesignOutpost/campusmap/cm_details_50.jpg). I know you have probably over-used this map and that it is not too helpful, but take serious note of the dorm farthest to the right and how close it is to the loop. It is vital to note that the dorm second to the farthest right is not the same size as the other three (its smaller is size). Also, this will be going against the rules, but bring the farthest building in (even if it means it looks out of location from the small dorm).
The Gazebo
hheine, you are too close to the dorms with your gazebo and your island (where the gazebo is on) is too small. However, the overall lake is perfect in size in proporation to the buildings. Just scoot the lake back a hair and slightly enlarge the island (not by much though... do not increase the lake size.. trust me on this). Alex, your gazebo is just right in size, but the lake and island are far too large in scale). Bring it close... use hheine as an example as location and sizing.
Pool
hheine, yours is too small and Alex, yours is too large. I will try to have pictures tomorrow for you all to use (as this is my fault.. you had nothing to work on).
Sports Courts.
Alex, your scale is near-perfect for the courts. However they can be a little longer and wider (not by much at all). However, where you have the courts is a different story. Try moving the courts one basketball court width toward the cafeteria. Also, where you have one basketball court, there should be two side by side. The same applies to the volleyball court and the tennis court. hheine, I cannot see yours.. can you provide a better shot of what you have?
Administration Buildings (north end)
This looks great. I will have more pictures of the completed Mission Control building (as they added windows... sorry, I didnt notice that our pictures didnt show that). Alex , I will use you as the example here... the main road going behind the Student Activity Center (SAC) needs to be going DIRECTLY behind the SAC and ends when it gets to the SAC (if that makes sense). If it helps, pretend that the SAC is part of that road, as it used to be one long airplane runway. Alex, there should be nothing west of that road (so you can make that large open space grass).
Pavillion Parking Lot
I will have more pictures of this as both drawings are slighly off. The entire parking lot is covered by the Pavillion when it is up. This is only up in the summer time and we would prefer that this white pavillion is not in the final map rendering, but it is a parking lot drawing instead. I will have shots of this tomorrow.
Of course, if you want to work on this now... go for it. I will try to have pictures up soon to help you all out with what I spoke of above shortly tomorrow.

Henrique, just MHO: I may be wrong, but I don't think Erik was meaning to use our works as an "example to follow" but rather an example of specific details that he wants or doesn't want to see in the final work :)
I mean, it wasn't "hey, take his font and her sqare on a circle and give them that colors you used in your last entry", but rather "I definitely want it to be geometric, like his entry, not organic like hers". He just used the entries as examples of better resolved specific details in each of the cases. And, as you say, the two entries are at completely different angles, so I don't think it would be a cheating to judge them in comparison ;)
Just MHO :) And I appreciate yours, so it isn't imperative by any means ;) Cheers, pal :)

Hi Erik
I work with web rhino, we are going to send our work very soon.
B) B) thanks
Thank you for your patience with this matter. I am still trying to work with the photographer on getting new pictures, but until then...
hheine, switch green hall and carey hall names (they are incorrect). I also like your no trees version better. Also, there is no real road behind the administration building as you show. the only road that is back there is the parking lot. The parking lot is 4 rows (one on each end and two in the center) and that is what joins that one road behind the admin with the road behind the Student Activity Center. During the summer, they place that pavilion over the parking lot (the pavilion is not by itself like that). The main fountain on the front of campus looks great. Move the fountain spicket more toward the front of the pond (toward the guard booth). In regards to the paved loop in front of the dorms... we call this "the horse shoe" (dont name it that) because it is perfectly the shape of a horse show. The entire road is the same width the entire way around (I think the arial picture is deceptive). On both ends, yes... there is a small parking lot. Try to make your loop more circular and less blockish like it is now. Also, would you mind tucking Morris Hall closer to the loop (even though it doesnt look like that on the pictures). The basketball, volleyball, football and tennis courts look realistic in size, but the pool looks out of scale (needs to be a bit bigger; sorry, I wish I had pictures sooner to help explain). Thank you for moving the gazebo, but it still needs to be corrected in location (I will give you more details later). If you can, enlarge the island that the gazebo is on and place the gazebo on the back left of the island (as it is not centered on that island). The administration buildings, mission control, admin, student union building, cafeteria, main loop, guard booth, entrance, etc... look great.
Alex, I gave my comments in my last post. stay tuned for the pictures to be posted shortly (hopefully). The dealine may be extended, but most likely will not be by a week)
u3slide, thank you for letting me know. We look forward to seeing what you have.

Ok.. I went ahead and made several revisions to your work alex... ALSO, pictures are being delayed, but I found a way to show you things...
Everyone please take note and make similar changes. hheine, could you also post a small version of your map so I could do similar changes?
Alex... this is what I did. I moved the gazebo, pool, tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts, and football courts. I even moved the trees in the back closer in and included a road that is in the back. I also made some notes for you to do. In addition to all the notes, could you make the loop in front of the dorms smoother? Also, could you try to make the parking slots obvious, but not make it look like the loop is that large (did that make any sense). I hope this helps. The only thing out of scale is the football court, but please use the notes I included for the football field. You may use a surrounding line to outline the field (so make it an obvious field, but not a proffessional one (as best as you can.. I know it'll be tricky, but lets see what you got).
Also, make note to the windows on Mission Control, Alex. Hheine, the other side of the building (for your sketch) has just the bottom row of windows only.
hheine, here is an edit of your map (also see notes from main note site)

AlexKogan
03-10-2004, 06:07 PM
...and another detail. I've tried to make the loop more even.
Thank you Alex. Could you
1) make the football field come in by 10 yards from the right (just cut off 10-15 yards from the top right. Also add a white line around the field and possibly 4 small stadium lights (2 on each side).
2) Make the windows on the mission control building lighter (less obvious) and just a tad smaller smaller. They are too dark. Other than that, that is perfect alignment.
3) Take note of the gazebo and pavilion parking lot. Also note the additional width to the road behind the SAC.
4) Also note the big grass lot behind the pavilion parking lot (we actually have a 'backyard' soccer field there; I didnt think of it till now, but you can try to add that, if you'd like (not required as this is not part of the original map.. I did add in grey where that is and where it ends (it ends off the map width there)).
5) Could you make the fountain less obvious
6) Move the sand volley ball courts toward the cafeteria some and enlarge slightly (I enlarged a little in below revision.. not by much).
I will point more out later and we will touch on sidewalks soon once we get the above straightened out (there are not many)
updated
1) I added the sidewalks (in this sketch only: in yellow) You may see the following links for enhanced pictures of the sidewalks:

c) http://campus.mediajuice.net/displayimage....?album=12&pos=1 (http://campus.mediajuice.net/displayimage.php?album=12&pos=1)
d) will provide some more later
2) I added grass in both pool and in front of SAC
3) Added prop in pool (see link: http://campus.mediajuice.net/displayimage....album=21&pos=6) (http://campus.mediajuice.net/displayimage.php?album=21&pos=6))
I updated the above post.
hheine, will you be providing an update soon?
Also, I will try to have pictures soon (I'm trying).
Deadline is pushed back by 1 last week.
AlexKogan

here's the updates. The sidewalks are "provisional" (they aren't rendered as the other roads).
If by the "prop" in pool you mean that water guns (or whatever they are) - I don't think theywill show at this scale.
The only thing I haven't done from your last scheme (I've noticed it just now) is to straighten the loop.
Cheers :)

Err, do you want me to just delete all these green mass and make it separate trees? Or do you want it just to be monotone areas slightly darker than the grass?
Alex, lets try going for the individual trees. I want to avoid the green mass, but lets see... hey.. I appreciate the fine tuning you are putting into this.

Hi Erik;
finally we had something finished, please look at the first draft here http://www.webrhinostudios.com/clients/alm...done%20copy.jpg (http://www.webrhinostudios.com/clients/almost%20done%20copy.jpg)
we will work more on the roads , it's not very smooth now, also I think the football field needs more lines, there are some shadows that need to be fixed...etc, anyway, everything needs to be cleaned but we will be waiting for your reply, let us know if we're on the right track ;)

Erik, it seems like it's going to take me some time with the trees :bash: Will try to post something tomorrow.
Yes, I am very pleased with the results thus far. Alex, keep up the good work (could you render the green monotone grass to a more realistic color, such as the other designer, HHeine has done). Hheine, I will post feedback shortly... thank you for posting the recent work.. I havent a chance to look at it just yet... just got back from out of town and exhausted.
I want to make sure that each of your designs is great for the board meeting. I know that all 3 of you are taking an enourmous risk with us, but I am incredibly grateful nonetheless for the time spent into this.
Feedback to come soon.

don't forget about our design Erik,
we know there is alot of stuff to fix, but your comments is always welcomed ;)
Absolutley, I didnt even see that you posted. I will be reviewing you and hheine's post on Monday. Thank you for posting Rhino.
Thank you for your hard work thus far. I am looking at wrapping up the deadline for this Thursday. Winner will be selected by the following Wednesday.
WebRhino, you are on the right track. Continue the great work and please take note of current notes throughout so I dont have to re-explain things.
Alex, awaiting your revision...
HHeine, I have attached your graphic with notes on it. This is near final draft. See attachment for notes.
Alex, other than the notes I already have for you, please proceed to make the following revisions in addition to what you have:

Hi, Erik :)
Here're the revisions.
The color scheme is changed to a lighter one, the trees are sparse (you ask me - I like the previous variant better), the sidewalks are drawn where they have to be. I also noted that you liked the separation between road and sidewalk colors, so I made it more notable (I had it always, it's just it wasn't visible enough). The court and the filed are moved where they belong. I've straightened the loop as well.
Cheers ;)

a detail.
Alex, thank you.
I do like the other variant better.
Could you please take note of the sidewalk revesion in front of the pool (since my last revision). Yes, the grass change is not a great pick (please revert back for now). Can you make the sand volleyball court a little smaller (sorry for all the changes with this silly court). Also, the sidewalk coming from the cafeteria to the first dorm (Elliot Hall) needs to meet the dorm better (my drawing of the sidewalk in the last revision is closer in accuracy). The sidewalk passing by the last dorm and meeting the parking lot, needs to meet the same part of the parking lot as my last revision does (the far right of it). There's also no sidewalk on the side of the "Mission Control" building that you added windows to (everywhere else, there is sidewalk). I'll get back to you on the outer tree change and the color of the sidewalks after you revert the grass back. The loop looks great!
Alex, this is near a good final draft. Thank you for your dedicated time in this and for making the final tweaks. Of course, if you have questions, please ask... you have time.

hi Erik;
we had some problems while fixing the map yesterday, we knew all the main errors we missed, so we'll be submitting something real soon.
Alex, Web Rhino,
No problem... I'll be standing by.
Alex, in addition to the edits I have for you, could you also add the building stripes (the white horizontal ones) to the MISSION CONTROL building (as you have on the Student Union Building). This is the building that you added the windows to.

Hi Erik, sorry for the delay. I´m having some serious health problems and i´m not supposed to be working. :( So I´m delaying some works lately. ;)
This is what i´ve done:
I - made Soccer Field 30% larger and moved it accordingly
II - removed the name tags
III - rotated and replaced the gazebo
IV - resized the green hall (smaller)
V - resized and replaced the morris hall (larger)
VI - replaced the parking lot near morris hall
VII - resized the parking lot near the admin building (less width)
VIII - added sidewalks near the pool, sports courts, etc..
Let me know is there´s something else to be done. And for the competitors: Good luck !
Thanks as always, :D

okay finally after a 20 hours non-slep (me and the 3d designer) we had something done.
we know that there are some few things to be fixed, but I think we dont have any time, we're all running on battary low here  , we need to get some ZZZzzz.
Now, attached is a small version of the map, I put a little sharppen effect to make it look clear, but you can also look at a larger one here www.webrhinostudios.com/clients/map100.jpg
I hope , you like our work so far, I wish that was in flash thou B)
anyway, to hheine, and Alex, good luck buddies  .
To the winner (to be selected by Tuesday):
The people reviewing these final drafts are all being told that these are drafts and not final renderings (although I consider them final renderings), but once a winner is selected, I hope and expect that small final edits could be refined even after the winning amount has been delivered. Once the project has been delivered, we do not expect the author to do 'additional' tweaks to the map (as our contract will be completed). We will be taking into high consideration to do an extension to the map to include parts of the map that are not in this design (or to add buildings) and we will look into making future private contracts with the winner for those projects (if the winner wishes to do so).
Web Rhino, I am absolutley shocked at the maturity and speed of your work! It is obvious that you studied all of the notes I handed to the others and I am very thankful for all of the labor you have placed into this. I can see no obvious edits to be made as of right now that will void your entry for review.
Alex, although I am still awaiting your final rendering, thank you for your time and effort in this. No doubt, you have put a considerable amount of time in this project and for that I am grateful. I can tell that you have aimed for perfection in this and appreciate your hard work.
Mr. Heine, Excellent final draft. I am also pleased by the excellent work you have put into this project. I love the angle and it matches the designer scetches we have in place (so I'm sure the board will love it). You have been very responsive to me and the comments I have suggested and I am proud that you are a part of this project.
Small note: As per our original request, a black and white version (sharp one) is also needed for the final winner. I guess a simple strip of colors would do it?
AlexKogan
03-18-2004, 01:58 PM

Shades of grey would be perfect. We are just waiting on yours before we close. :)

Hi, Erik :) Will be posting soon :)
A couple of questions:
the roads that lead from the loop to the dorms, do you want them to be of "sidewalk color" or "road color"? As I'm drawing a sidewalk than circles the loop, these roads are being "cut" from the loop and look somewhat strange if they are of "road color".
The second question: do you want no border at all (on the roads) or just another type of border? And if so - which type would it be? Also, is it about the roads only or the sidewalks as well, cause I have a "dirty"border abround the sidewalks too.
Cheers :)
Let me answer your questions...
With the loop color. Do what you think is best... I would prefer the sidewalk color like you had mentioned (as it indeed is different like that in reality). Just try to make it as realistic as possible. The edit that I showed to you was as real as it is (starting and stoping where it is layed out; plus or minus some small bumps... I had to use undo several times to make it just right).
As for your seocnd question.. I want the same border that you used on the first versions that you had (with the darker green grass). In reality, there is a grey curb that lines the whole road, but use what you can to eliminate the "dirty." I trust your judgement.

Ok, Erik, here's my revisions. I took another chance for changing the palette, making the forest less remarkable and the grass a bit more soothing.
The full version of the render can be seen HERE (http://www.angeltowns.com/members/alxkgn/CampusMap9full.htm) (size: 230Kb).
Cheers :)
Thank you Alex for your submission.
The board is reviewing all three final drafts as we speak and has been told to place their feedback by close of buisness on Monday. The contest winner will be announced Tuesday at noon.
Once a winner has been selected, we will then ask the designer to perform courteous edits that our board had and then once that is completed, we will ask for the black and white version of the campus.
Black & White Version - winner carries this responsibility only
I am not talking about a greyscale image of the current map above. Also, try to avoid black as much as possible I am talking about an excellent image (white background) that excludes entirely:
- fountains
- gazebo water
- surrounding trees & all shrubbery (if any, other than prayer tree)
Greyscale can have items such as buildings and the pool. Other items such as roads, sidewalks need to be stripped of color and have shades of grey for the border but white fille (try to avoid black as much as possible). Basically, as long as it looks good on the bottom right hand side of an 81/2 x 11 page (1/4th of a page) that would be great (but can still look good full page).
Thank you for all of your hard work. We will be in touch shortly.

Winner Selected
Winner: Alex Kogan
When this was first presented to the marketing team, they were blown away at the elegance of all three of the final renderings. Even more impressive, that all three artists hadn't stepped foot on our campus. We brought the designs to the team with the notion that the designs could be altered/changed at their request (so they wouldn't base their decision on perfection, but on theme). The final conclusion was not an easy one as we had some torn in all directions, but finally came to a conclusion early Monday for Alex's work.
We then went through a second rotation for anyone to submit critiques and had a good dozen critiques (Alex, I will be submitting that to you as soon as I get them). Once we have sent the final critiques and you have submitted the black and white map to us (as described in a post I made above), then the contest req's are completed.
I want to thank all of you for your valuable time in participating for this contest. All of the people on the marketing team know how much time was spent in this, and again, we're very thankful. Of course, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know by emailing me at erik.herrera@teenmania.org or posting here.
Palmer...
Palmer, I do not know how you wish to handle this. We have just a few edits from the marketing team to make on the map and then have a black and white map needed (all req's for the prize). Should I contact you via email and let you know when everything is over?

Hi, Erik!
Here's the updated version (http://www.angeltowns.com/members/alxkgn/CampusMap10.htm) (400Kb)
Here's a closeup of the parking lot. Is it ok this way?
Alex, our apologies for the delay.
Thank you for the map. Could you make the sidewalks a little darker (sorry for all the changes). The main road looks realistic, but the sidewalk looks too whitish.
As for the south lot parking lot, could you make the parking lot the same color as the road (similar to the pavilion parking lot)
As for the pavilion parking lot and staff lot... could you make the parking slots a little less in contrast of grey from the parking lot itself?
I look forward to your next rendering.
AlexKogan
03-27-2004, 03:32 PM
Hi, Erik.
I have some doubts about the sidewalks: I made them that light because if I made them darker, they would be too similar in tone value to the lawn and would not stand out. I'lll try to make it look good anyway, but please have in mind that making them darker may make them too little contrasty.
Also, after getting rid of the yellowish color of the sidewalks, the overall look of the map is (from my point of view) too cool in tone, it lacks ballance between cool and warm colors. So the question is: are you absolutely sure you don't want the sidewalks to be a little warmer, just a slight touch of yellow and red?
What do you think?
Cheers :)
Well, the truth is... when I look at the map, the only thing that stands out to me is the sidewalk. Its as if the sidewalk takes away on this rencet version from the tone of the rest of the map. The other version, it looked great, but just looked the wrong color. It's as if the rest of the map is absolutley right on, but the sidewalk is just a large contrast from the rest of the map.
What I am getting at, is you may try another approach (lighter or darker) that doesn't make the rest of the map look contrast to a sidewalk, it will be ok. Sorry for being so picky here...
Alex, thank you for all of your work on this thus far.

Hi, Erik.
HERE'S (http://www.angeltowns.com/members/alxkgn/CampusMap11.htm) the variant with the sidewalks slightly lighter than the road, and below's a closeup of the parking lot. I've adjusted the color of the individual lots, is this ok or maybe a little bit ligher?
Cheers :)
P.S. please (PLEASE!) ask for all the revisions you need. It's better to make them all now than to correct the things afterwards, when the project's over and I have all the files packed and stuffed on the shelf :D
I'll get back to you with replies soon, but I wanted to reply and let you know that once we close the contest, we will not ask you of any revisions unless with a paid arrangement. That is why we are getting these revisions out of the way.
Quick notes: sidewalk looks great to me, let me see what the team thinks... before I give it to the team, could you erase the line seperating the parking lot from the road. I can do that with paint, but try to do that with the map itself. This is an excellent revision... more notes to come.
The sidewalk color is an excellent choice. Just a few things to striaghten out. You'll notice that in this version, I actually made changes myself to show you what I'm looking for. Everything but the football end-zone was corrected. Notes are all in the picture, please reply with any questions you may have. Basically, there are just basic touch ups and you have our thumbs up.

Great
Erik, one question: do you really need the B&W version be a vector file or can I export it as a bitmap? (PSD, TIFF or something).
It would be much more easier for me to make it a bitmap.
If you DO need a vector file, do you want it to be a one Spot color image or just a grayscale process image? The difference is, that a Spot color image is made of tones of the same color, which will require one plate to print. A process image is a mix of 4 colors (CMYK) but looks grayscale. CMYK print is used in most of desktop printers, so if you're planning it for desktop only use - you'll see no difference etween a Spot and a CMYK version... Duh, it's easier to ask: where are oyu going to use the Grayscale map? Desktop print? Professional CMYK print (magazines, prospects, flyers etc.)? Somewhere else? :D
Cheers!
I liked your closing question better... the b&w is going to be used in professional print & casual print. It really doesnt matter how you export it, just as long as it can make it on a single page for print or even look good on 1/2 of a page (normal layout). I am trying to avoid anything that would look funny, but something that would look incredibly sharp on paper. Does this help clear up what I need?

AlexKogan
04-06-2004, 12:44 PM
HERE it is. (http://www.angeltowns.com/members/alxkgn/CampusMap_bw2.htm)
It's all vectors, but the black is CMYK (that is, this design will produce four plates: C, M and Y - empty, and K - the grayscale that you see).
I've changed some of the tone values to make it more contrasty in grayscael. It can be polished more.
Alex, not exactly what I was looking for. As mentioned from the description that was requested, strip the green, lakes, trees, gazebo, fountain, soccer field and just leave the buildings, the football field, pool, sports courts (minus soccer) a filled road and sidewalk (that is the only thing to stay filled) and that should do it.
I hope that is simpler than done. (attached is a sample of what im looking for... basically, just imagine white where there is nothing (not shades of mess as you see... I did a quick job of it to illustrate))
Edit: Could you keep a rendering with the trees? Continue to remove all the greys, etc, but leave the trees and surrounding trees in greyscale. Thanks.
Side note: (see note in edit above)
Alex, I'm not sure if you're working on this, but I attached another copy of the graphic we're looking for (I tried to edit it as much as I could).
Please provide a variation with the surrounding trees and without them (leave the individual trees)
Edit on color version: could you take color of depth out of the swimming pool? (that seemed to appear in the final draft)
Thank you Alex. We also send you a PM for phase II of the project (We're still gathering photos)
When this black and white design is completed (and that small edit from the color version by removing the color depth of the swimming pool), phase I is completed.

Erik, I have it in vector form and can export it to a bitmap. If you need a bimtap - give me a size and I'll export it. If you want the vector - I'll expand the whole thing and upload it somewhre for you to download: it will weight about 20-30Mb. Thus, for small documents, a bitmap is preferrable.
Also, do you want both color and grayscale or only the grayscale at this point?
Alex, we would like the vector for both the vector and the color and then color (the rawest as possible). We have techs here to grab it from there. I expected a 40-50mb file, but I will appreciate every minute of upload that you put in (I understand your connection speeds).
I can give you FTP access if you would like to upload it somewhere.
Again, thank you for your deligence in this and for all of your hard work. We consider this contest closed as soon after the uploads/file is received.
AlexKogan
04-23-2004, 03:42 AM
Erik, so to summarize (I'm somewhat confused with your first phrase, so I prefer to clarify it) I upload:
1. Vector version of color design
2. Vector version of grayscale design.
Is it so or do you want something in addition? Anyway, I'm preparing these two for upload. If you have an FTP address - it would be great to have it, could you PM it to me?
AlexKogan
04-23-2004, 03:48 AM
...also a format question: can you read Illustrator 9? If so, I can leave the transparency unexpanded and save some megabytes of upload. In case you can't - would a PDF file be enough for your needs?
Alex, yes vector uploads for both color & bw (and FTP information is on its way). All I know is that IT requested the rawest format possible (PSD, Vector, etc...). I dont think we need a PDF or Illustrator (not sure why Illustrator is needed other than a means for exporting).
AlexKogan

Have just uploaded the grayscale map. It's an EPS, version 7 compatible, so you can open it with nearly every graphic application. It has the trees, but if you open it in a vector application (Illustrator, CorelDRAW, FreeHand etc.) you can turn off the layer with the trees and have the variant without the trees. The layer is called "trees" (there's another called "trees within campus" and it isn't it).
If you want me to upload a version without the trees to save you the work - just say so :)
The EPS is what I understand you'd call a "rowest" format: it can be converted to anything at any resolution, so if you have a PhotoShop - you can make everything, from GIF to PSD out of it. But if at some point you want a bitmap - tell me and I'll send it to you (at the size and resolution you indicate).
As I said before, I'll need a bit more time for the color version, it's a tedious process to prepare the illustration for print. I count about 2 days for it, but it can be done faster.
Cheers!
The Vector is what we would want (im sorry for the inconvienience). We know it will be about 20-30mb (we need both color and b&w)

Hi, Erik!
I've uploaded the color version. It's an EPS also, and it does weight about 45Mb uncompressed, but it's version 9 compatible, so I need you te tell me if you can open it and use it. You'll need either Illustrator 9 (or newer), PhotoShop 7 (or newer), Adobe Acrobat 5 (or newer) or maybe CorelDRAW 11 (I'm not sure about the last one). Maybe the latest version of FreeHand can open it too.
I used a few gradient meshes in the art, and it can't be saved in version 7 format without converting the meshes to bitmaps. I can do it, but you have to tell me exactly at what size you'll need the design.
In fact, the meshes don't do much in the art (they're the neat green gradients on the lawns that make them look "embossed"). I can always take them out without damaging much the overall look. You tell me :)
I can also send you the original Illustrator 9 file, if you want.
Cheers! ;)
Could you upload the orignal file as well? Alex, thank you so much for your patience in all of this. Just let me know when you have uploaded it and the name of the file, thanks.

Erik, I have two "original" files: one which I exported the EPS from (this one has everything converted to curves, no effects left over) and the "real" original, which has all of the effects, blends, transparencies etc. Which one do they want?
The first one would look exactly as I see it on my screen, cause it's "bulletproof": it is as it is. But some of the editability is lost due to expanded (converted to curves) effects.
The second one has all the editability an original can have, but there's no guarantee that it will look the same on another machine, for effects and transparencies are tricky thing and can vary depending on the preferences. This one, also, wights about 24Mb, whilst the first one weights 20.
You tell me which, I'll upload it :)
They told me that the EPS would be what they needed.
Let's go ahead and get that and get this contest closed.

Err... do you mmean the file I exported the EPS from? Because the EPS themselves (both grayscale and color ones) are already uploaded at the ftp address you gave me...
They have confirmed that this has worked for them. Thank you for your time in this.
Palmer, you may close this contest (email is being dispatched as well to notify you).
