Hi folks...
Here's my latest contest. It's for Shades Mountain Bible Church in Birmingham, Alabama. They want a new logo that includes some kind of branding mark they can lift out and use independently for identity.
Also, please use a unique font for the church name that can also be a branding cue. But make sure this is a font that is either part of the Adobe FontFolio or a TTF that you can include when you send the logo. We'll want to have that font to use ourselves.
This logo will be used on all kinds of media from print, to signage, to apparel.
Now here's the first of 2 tricky parts. In the near future, they may change locations and names. So logos that include a mountain might become obsolete. So please stay away from this.
Using a Bible should be ok, as they'll keep the "Bible Church" part of the name... just be sure it's a Bible that doesn't look antiquated. This is a modern church.
The result will be that when and if a name change occurs, the church will keep the branding mark and simply insert the new church name using the previously mentioned unique font.
Here's the second tricky part. I need all submissions by THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON (that's Feb 27) at 5:00 PM Central Time. The church leadership will meet this weekend to decide which logo they want. We'll have a winner one week from today.
The church doesn’t have official colors at the moment. But let’s try to stay in a palette of subtle blues, dark reds, dark purples, or nice browns… No neon, please, but feel free to experiment with various color combinations. Just be sure that the logo looks great in one color. Final product should be vector art in AI or EPS format.
Submit as many logo ideas as you like. I’ll be able to give some feedback throughout the week. Thanks! I look forward to some great submissions!!!

Hi there, here's my concept for the Bible Church logo (I wasn't sure of how many colors you wanted in any single logo so these ones use only two).

Christian - Symbol is pretty good. Let's try it without the rotation. Also, let's try new fonts for the name. The ones you used are a little too common.
Fuse - 2 of 5 people I asked about it didn't see the Bible at first. I did... but funny how some people just can't see something. Also, let's try another font choice. The one for Shades Mountain looks too much like the old Zapf Chancery that's way too overused.
Beatz - LOVE THE FONT! And I like the symbol... but can we try another design besides that starburst to create it? I don't know what, but something... Very cool symbol though.
Arthouse - Your colors are great. We like the font used on the top left logo. But let's try something else besides what my assistant calls flying people.
Thanks folks... Keep 'em coming!

Here's my entry. These are all two color designs with the crosses being screened versions of the mountain colors.
Let me know what you think. I look forward to your comments and feedback.
Thanks.

graphxguy - Thanks for the submission. I like the text, but please note the instructions concerning the use of mountains in my original post.
Thanks! Nathan

The mountains represent Golgotha, the site of the crucifixion, not the location of the church.
Let me know if this makes a difference.
Thanks.

graphxguy - I'll be happy to submit your logo. I like the balance it has. I'm just communicating the client's desire to have a logo that was not associated with "mountain" as they may be moving from their current location.
Thanks! Nathan

Based on a PM I received earlier, I think I need to clarify what I meant in the original post about providing the fonts used in the project. Nobody wants the font police to get all ticked off.
The font(s) used in the logo should be either in the public domain that can be provided or downloaded or one that is included in Adobe's Font Folio which I own.
Hopefully this hasn't stopped anyone from posting so far. If so, please breathe easier and post away.
Thanks.

Thanks folks! All submissions will be accepted on this contest until further notice. Also, trying to persuade the client to allow the use of mountain theme in the logo. That will make things easier.
Thanks! Nathan

Hi Nathan,
A couple questions to aid the designers:
1. Demographically, what are we looking at? Old congregation, young? You said modern, but modern to one may not be modern to another.
2. Is Shades Mountain a town, or is it an actual mountain? I realize they may be moving, so it may not matter, but it may help to know.
Thanks, we'll keep working on this.
;)
BTW, I tried to get to the church's site to get this info and the domain's host said that the client was offline. I didn't know if someone should be notified.

Arthouse... Excellent questions. Thanks for asking.
1. The Church is a good blend of all age groups. The new pastor is high-energy and progressive. The new logo needs to look like it was designed in 2004, not 1950.
2. Shades Mountain is a community outside Birmingham, AL. It is an also actual mountain. At this point, I'd say try some things with mountains and let's see what they say. There may be some design cues in this logo that they can use to create the new logo down the road.
On the domain issue... I just got the same error. Not sure what the deal is there. Will check ASAP. They still own the domain, though, so that's a good thing. I am developing their new website, so they might have just taken the other one down. The old one was so out of date that it wouldn't be much help to you anyway. But thanks for letting me know...

Mark... Thanks for the entry. I like your text choices... but I'm not sure how this one will look in black and white. I'm afraid it would die a painful death if exposed to xeroxing.
The client would really like to see logos using a Bible. Maybe something stylized? I pulled a couple of elements from Mark's post above to give an idea of what I'm thinking... not this exactly, but maybe the image below is a jumping off point. Something simple and stylized is all I need.
:help: MUST get this done SOON!

OK... Blackspot... we're in the right ballpark with that last one. The font may be a little too edgy. The stylized version is close... but lets try it with more of a side view like the example I posted on the prev page.
Fuse... The client is looking at your submission. Feedback to come...

The comment I'm getting so far is that the Bible graphic is too isolated from the text. Any ideas on connecting the graphic and text somehow?

Hi Nathan,
I tried to put the text inside the sketch, but the lines kept overlapping and did not look appealing (IMHO). If you wish I will post it.
Instead I moved all of the text to the bottom and made the sketch larger so it now also resembles mountains above the text.
Let me know what you think.

Mark - Looks great.
Blackspot - I like this new orientation. I'll present it as is, but maybe a sans serif font?
Raja - Wow! I like yours alot. It's a solid design that's just unique enough to work. Let's try some different fonts other than the italics and the smaller bible church.
Eagle - This is a good solid design that will work well for someone... However, in this particular logo, it looks like a hurricane is about to hit SMBC  . Seriously, good design... but not for this contest.
Thanks all! Great work tonight!!!

Christian... I like this one too. But let's try it without the circle and cross in the middle. And also with the circle in the middle but maybe as a sun?
Thanks all!

The client loved Raja's blue and yellow design a few posts up. Raja, I will need to work with you on getting the right font and how to place it under the logo. But the design is great!
Thanks all for your submissions.

Hey Raja... Thanks. Might be Tuesday before I get back to this. I've been with my wife in the hospital the last 2 days after the birth of our second child who came 3 weeks early (woohoo!!).
I'll be back in the saddle next week.

Hey Raja... I'm back and ready to get this baby finished up.
We need to tweak the text a bit. Need to see some different font combinations (sans-serif). They want to see one with Shades in the blue and Mountain in the yellow bar. I don't think that will look very good, but they want to see it.
Also, they love the blue and yellow, but would also like to see a couple of additional color combinations just to be sure.
Thanks! Nathan

Hi Raja... Thanks. The client is ready to move on this one! But I can sympathize. I always have too many irons in the fire.
What would you charge to design some stationery for them using this logo (letterhead, #10 env, and business cards)?

Hi Nathan
I am away for most part of the day, I'll return at 11 PM (E.S.T) with your revisions and a quote. Promise :)

Hey Raja... Sorry it's taken me FOREVER to finish this project up. New baby = major chaos.
The church is ready to take the logo as is before any font or color changes were made. I'll tweak the fonts with them later if they want.
Please send EPS of the art with and without the gradient. There's still a little debate there about which they like better. I'll handle all that.
E-mail art to nathan@brilliantly.net.
Thanks for a great logo... and sorry, again, for the delay!!!
