AftermarketExtremes.com Design - PRIZE: $175.00
Summary: Ecommerce- Specialty Auto Parts

Hello,

(This is a long one... I suggest you print it and keep a highlighter handy for the really important parts! ;) However, I do include a summary at the very end of this post as a quick review and reference.)

I am working on a site for a client dealing with specialty auto parts. After having a little design block and finding the Wheelreplicas.com Redesign (which impressed me)... I decided to suggest to my client that we set up a contest to get the best results for him.

Before I get too far... you may access images I mention by name/directory below using a restricted FTP account. You may log in using the following information:

Address: ftp.aftermarketextremes.com
User: designer@aftermarketextremes.com
Pass: abcabc

[admin edit]Open up your ftp program (like ws_ftp) where it says "Hostname/address:" use ftp.aftermarketextremes.com and enter the user name and password above[/edit]

( If anyone has problems getting the files via FTP, just let me know and I will make other arrangements. )

The Site and Design Style Desired:

The domain for my client's site is: http://www.aftermarketextremes.com/ There is just a simple page there in the meantime, but if you click through to his ebay auctions, you will see some of the items he will be marketing through the site once completed. Some cars my client caters to are: Accord, Civic, s2000, Prelude, and CRX. (These are all Hondas... there are other makers too.)

Here are a few sites with similar purposes to what we are developing:

http://www.optionsautosalon.com/
http://www.polkperformance.com/
http://www.nopi.com/
http://www.civicsuperstore.com/

Some terms my client has used to describe what he wants: "clean","sophisticated","very nice looking". Case in point, my client seems to like the feel of http://www.civicsuperstore.com/ the most.

Template Integration:

This site template is to be integrated with the osCommerce shopping system. An example of the most current release of osCommerce can be viewed here: http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/ Don't think that means you are limited in design to something along those lines...

Here are a few examples of customized osCommerce powered sites:

http://paulharris.paulharris.com/catalog/default.php
http://www.dvwarehouse.com/ (good example of how very customized it can be)
http://www.tozka.com/ (also selling auto parts)
http://www.dagiftbasket.com/store/catalog/default.php (a bit more traditional)

A couple points...

First off, the "Languages" and "Currencies" boxes seen in the default osCommerce design will not be needed.

Open this URL: http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/...ult.php?cPath=3 (http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/default.php?cPath=3)

As you can see, when a main category is clicked on, the sub-categories display on the left as an expanded tree and in the main page with text links and associated images. Also, the image associated to the category selected ("DVD Movies" in this case.) is being displayed in the upper right. Also, notice that when a sub-category is selected, it is then the sub-category image displayed in the upper right. As seen here with "DVD Movies >> Action":

http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/....php?cPath=3_10 (http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/default.php?cPath=3_10)

Anyway, you should provide an example of the style, if any, you would add to these category and sub-category images to match your design. ( Example: At the URL above... purple background, thick black border for sub-categories and none for the main categories.). Obviously, we won't be using the osCommerce images... so just use the provided product images (see below) to create examples of any styling.

While at the above URL ("DVD Movies >> Action"), you should note the row color display of the products within that category. You should probably provide an example of this and how it would work in relation to your design.

Product Images:

Some product images have been provided by the client and a couple taken by me from his auctions. (FTP: /products/) Some are edited somewhat, some are not. You could use these to demonstrate styling or whatever.

Links and Navigation:

I like the way http://www.dvwarehouse.com/ shows the "Manufacturers" as an expanded drop down... please leave room for that in your design.

The category links should be easy to edit as we haven't laid down the initial category tree yet... so we should try to stick with text/CSS mix for those in the final version. (with images only used for accents... rounded corners, tree indicators, whatever your design requires) If used, mouseovers for the category navigation should be provided in CSS in the final version.

Here is an example of how the category tree might work in our case with the CRX branch showing it's sub categories...

Accord
Civic
CRX
-> Brakes
-> Exhaust
-> Intake Systems
-> Lighting
-> Suspension
-> Tires
-> Wheels
-> Xenon Headlamp Kits
Prelude
s2000

Anyway, whether you stick with a traditional osCommerce navigation or a more unique view (such as http://www.dvwarehouse.com/ ), you should keep in mind how the coloring should work with categories, sub-categories, and mouseovers (or whatever).

White 2001 Honda s2000:

My client would like his Honda s2000 worked in to the design somewhere.

I have cropped out and reduced one of the photos he sent me (FTP: s2000_cropped_1.jpg). The picture was taken in a parking deck... it's still needs a little more brightness. Also, because of the backlight windshield and 92 colors in that area... I am not quite sure how to edit the windshield and still have it look like a natural glass windshield. If you can edit that windshield and make it look natural... that is a major plus! ;)

OR

You may access any of the other s2000 pictures (FTP: s2000_reduced_#.jpg) and edit those to your liking. Except for taking the size from 1600 X 1200 to 800 X 600 and saving at .75 quality to reduce download time (Some were registering as 5MB before those changes!), these images are unedited. A couple are only included as reference... as some bits were cut off when the picture was taken. Now that I look at them again... s2000_reduced_3.jpg is definitely my favorite as it was taken outside and the s2000 looks great with the top up... still, it too would need some creative editing. :)

All the s2000 pictures should be high enough quality for any editing, however, should you need the original before it was reduced... just let me know.

Regarding Logo:

A logo is provided. (FTP: logo.jpg) However, don't base your design on this logo and the logo colors! If you can change this logo to match the colors and style of your site design... fine. Otherwise, just insert a generic logo... when inserting a logo, please indicate in your post the dimensions of the space it would take up. I would say a minimum would probably be 100px H X 250px W for the logo provided.

Site Colors:

We have decided not to specify colors at this time... we want to leave plenty of room for your creativity to influence your design. This may change midway through the contest if we feel we need to focus the designs more.

Shopping Cart Buttons:

osCommerce comes with default shopping cart buttons listed below. (FTP: /cart_buttons/) You do not need to create them from scratch if the default ones will match your design... editing the colors to match should be sufficient. Also, you are not expected to provide examples of all these in your submissions... 1-3 would be fine, but please keep in mind that at least the ones listed below and maybe a few more will be needed after a winner is picked.

Contest Details:

Would prefer to pick a winner by the evening of 3/26/03 (about 14 days)... will extend if necessary.

My client will be looking in on the contest... he may decide it is easier to post instead of relaying messages through me... so keep that in mind. To make communication between myself and the designers and the client a smooth as possible, please include in your post a template version ID. Such as: USERNAME_1, USERNAME_2. (Saw this in another contest... great idea!)

Winner should be available for small modifications, if any, during integration with osCommerce and future paid work with this design. (I figure most designers will be, but thought I should mention this up front.) I will need the template sliced into HTML... positioning should be Table based as osCommerce is still based on that model... CSS styling is preferred.

If you need any more information, please ask. ;) Thank you very much for considering our contest... we can't wait to see your designs!

Thanks,
Michael

Michael,

Just to let you know, I am going to start in on a design for this site tonight, and spend the morning on it tomorrow. I should have something to show you by Tuesday afternoon.

Great, but it really should be Michael you're addressing, not me :)

Michael, I'm working on the entry for the Asymilate template contest and the next one on my schedule is this contest.

Stay tuned... ;)

Geof and Palmer, thanks for letting me know... I look forward to seeing your submissions. :)

Also, thank you Palmer for responding to V+E+R+T for me... I was taking some much needed offline time. ;)

V+E+R+T, I hope to see a submission from you too! :) Palmer referred to you as "awesome" in a PM! (argh... the pressure!) ;)

Michael,

Following is my entry into the contest. I spent a lot of time sorting out your site architecture, pulling ideas from civicsuperstore.com, toska.com, dvwarehouse.com, and even amazon.com, so this may not be the exact global navigation you are looking for. The links can be easily re-worked.

The design is intended to be stretchy, covering the entire browser window. It incorporates many of the link elements found in the sites you listed as examples, but may be missing some that were important...for that I apologize. I did the best I could :)

Regardless, let me know what you think, and we can go from there.

thanks

Wow, I agree with Palmer. ;) That is very good first design submission for this contest!

Personally, I like the color combo with the blue/red/orange. I think the red and orange really help separate the elements and bring the design to life. Whereas, the other color combo is too "dull". Good job with the logo and s2000 too! As far as the navigation... I'll need more time to check it out and gauge it's feasibility. (it looks pretty good, though)

Anyway, that is a great submission... thank you very much! I will think about this more and consult with the client, then get back to you with any changes. ;)

Michael...

Well, is anyone else planning on entering this contest? :)

Just trying to gauge whether I should extend the deadline (3/26/2003) and how much. I know there are quite a few contests up right now and want to allow enough time for anyone wanting to submit an entry.

This design isn't as hard as my ...long... description may make it seem. :) Remember, I include a summary at the end of my post for quick reference. ;)

Anyway, a quick heads up would be nice if you plan on entering.

I have finished what I feel is a good concept.

I would like to wait till I get your opinion on it before I add mock content (unless it will help).

Please let me know what you think of it and any of the colors or items can be changed.

As it is right now, the navigation will utilize a DHTML popup menu.

Yeah that was me.
I've been thinking about designs for this contest for the last couple of days and this is what I've come up with. I'm actually really happy with this one.
As you know I couldn't access the ftp, so I looked around for images and found a lot of good ones including this white s2000, which was perfect in terms of perspective that I was thinking about. A lof of editing doen to this too.
I see that you put the images on a http thanks! I'm gonna look at them tomorrow and finish the design.

Hmmm, after seeing QSDA's in particular, I want to make changes to my template :)

But I will wait and get feedback from Michael. I guess that's the problem with being the first poster. As new designs trickle in, they add elements or a new perspective that looks awesome and suddenly you're inspired to tweak yours ever so much. All these other ones look great too, guys. Nice work. Some sweet entries here.

Is there anyway you could provide us with a vector format of the logo? I really like to use that to change the colors so that it'll be much smoother and cleaner on the design. Although I changed the colors it's not as sharp looking as the other elements of the design.
Thank you.

Michael...

Well, I think we need more time to work on this... so the contest is officially extended to at least 4-6-2003. I am just waiting on my client to get back to me with some feedback on these designs. :) They are looking great! Anyone else who wants to enter... you still have time. ;)

Well, I didn't create the logo... it was supplied to me. Sorry, no vector format... I am using Gimp for windows... no vector capabilities. I think the logo you did looks pretty good. :)

Geof

Well, I haven't heard back from the client yet, but seeing as you are going to do a revision... I will make some comments. :)

The image you have in the background of the header... it's a car right? ;) It is a little unclear... maybe chuck it and go with a different concept there. Also, I think it clashes a little with the foreground car... different directions.

If you can, move the search field higher up in the design. It can be pretty much in any place you want and does not have to be limited to a "box" format as in the current design.

Could you show the "Manufacturers" box as an expanded drop down as at http://www.dvwarehouse.com/?

Could you show an example of how the product table row coloring would work as it is shown here:

http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/....php?cPath=3_10 (http://www.oscommerce.com/osCommerce22ms1/default.php?cPath=3_10)

Correct me if I am wrong, but you have set some of the colors here to match the already existing shopping cart buttons, right?

Just wondering... the header navigation (Products, Reviews, etc)... would the lettering be text or image in the final markup? (text is better, if possible)

I might as well comment on the others too... remember, I haven't heard from my client (which could affect colors, etc), so if you want to wait to do revisions... feel free... I won't hold it against you. ;)

Palmer

I think I gave a false impression when I gave the category tree example... there will be more 5 cars being catered to. I have contacted my client to confirm this... have heard yet, but I am fairly certain. So, putting them in the header won't do... unless the design is made to easily add and remove more. Anyway, you may want to switch to an easier to design (for editing anyway) left column navigation.

Same thing I told Geof on the search field... just keep it in the upper portions of the design, if possible.

Thank you for the example of how the product table rows would be colored. :)

Just wondering... about how much room is left for the logo?

Palmer
03-28-2003, 11:05 AM
I'm not sure what you mean by the last sentence. Could you clarify? :)

Michael...
03-28-2003, 11:08 AM
( Split this post because of some silly emoticon error! Hey, a long post requires lots of emoticons! )

PIXELBreak

This looks pretty good.

That s2000 is killing the look... let me see if I can get you (and everyone) a better edited copy to work with.

I would need to see how the other areas would work... top seller, new products, whatever. Just one example of where they would fit in the design and how they would look is sufficient. Just be sure to keep the search field in the upper region. ;)

Could you point me to a site that uses a DHTML menu of the type that you propose?

QSDA

Regarding FTP access:Yeah that was me.
I know... I wasn't going to "out" you. ;)

As you know I couldn't access the ftp, so I looked around for images and found a lot of good ones including this white s2000, which was perfect in terms of perspective that I was thinking about. A lof of editing doen to this too.
That is a great looking image... it fits in very well. I don't know if the client wants anything but his own, though. Perhaps he would settle for that one until better pictures of his own can be taken.

All the pictures' lightnings were really bad so I decided not to use any on the banner. I have tried to though... below is one of the edited pictures that can be used on other areas/pages.
That is a pretty good edit... considering. ;)

I agree with Palmer... your design is quite good. :) These comments are regarding QSDA_2...

I like the "quick links" idea.

I like the main area "wheels" header and formatting better than QSDA_1. Well done.

As with Palmer... I gave the false impression that there would only be 5 car models being catered to... I don't think this will be the case... so they will need located other than at the top for easier editing. I do like that bar you have there as it flows with the design... unless you have a better idea ;)... so just fill it in with some other links as in Geof's design.

Also, because I gave that false impression... you guessed that we would only have Hondas and promoted that in the header... I don't think that is the case either. Perhaps we could stagger (different sizes and positions) the different company names in the header... if there is room. If you like that idea, I will get a list from my client. Otherwise, feel free to come with an alternative idea. I do like the filler images and "text"... perhaps just add a couple more filler images with curvy edges to match the flow of the header design? Alas, I digress. :)

Could you add a search box somewhere? ;)

Conclusion...

Sorry for the mix up on the car models! I will post here as soon as I get any feedback from my client. Just ask if I left anything up in the air. :)

Thanks for all your work!

-Michael

Well, I don't know what I mean either! :) Just kidding... ;) I was just wondering how much room is up there where you placed the current logo... to fit a logo. I am assuming because you didn't match the colors... you were just adding it as a placeholder (as suggested) and were counting on our logo contest (if we run one) to match a logo to it. Come to think of it... I guess any logo could float over the design and not be limited by that space... anyway, basically I was wondering what space (pixel by pixel) you fit the provided logo into.

(took the long road on that one!)

Maybe the limit should be based on an algorithm to compare post length to emoticon usage and account accordingly. :P :) :P

I didn't match the color because I thought it looked pretty cool the way it was. The red and yellow had a nice racy feel to it. But answering your question, I could move it down to where the car is and make it larger. It would probably look better there anyway.

Well, that is the problem with assumptions. Oops. :) That basically makes my question moot. :) Well, larger would be better... so that the top line is easier to read. Positioning is up to you. I will be providing a better edit of the s2000 within a couple days if I can get to it. ;)

By the way, QSDA, I forgot to mention... is there any way to make the "Welcome to..." line in the header a little bigger... so it is easier to read. (if there is a size between the one you have and the one your "boxes" use... try that)

Thanks again everyone!

Michael,

Sorry about the delay. I've been really busy these past few weeks. Here's the revisions with the elements you were after. I changed all navigation text to a web-friendly font that you will be update yourself at any time. I've also shown what a category drillodwn page will look like, and have moved the Search field up to the top (much like Amazon.com) so it's easy to find and always in the same place. The colours have changed slightly in the design (more, and brighter), and I've also added the new photo of the S2000, which I think is a much better shot.

Looking forward to your thoughts,

geof

Well, after some communication problems (my private client forum emails seemingly weren't received... thus no response back), some waiting for the next payment to me (hey, I'm not doing this for free ;)), and a delay while I finalized my taxes... here I am to post again. Sorry for the silence. :)

My client has expressed the feeling that he wants to go with geofharries. He did not think changes to any of the other designs would change his mind... so I won't waste your time. ;) However, because I understand the need to be respectful of your time... in case a design/re-work was already in the works or you just want to throw your hat in the mix... any new submissions will be considered if submitted by 11:59 PM CST 4/20/03. Otherwise, I will officially end this contest and announce geofharries as the winner with a post on Monday!

Thank you for your submissions and for the changes you made in order to try to help us envision the potential site!

(Geof, I will be in touch soon to finalize this design. ;))

Michael,

Great to hear my design may be the winner....fingers are crossed, but I'm also aware that some other templates may be revised or submitted that could take me out. So goes the game. However it turns out, I'm a happy guy :)

Looking forward to your response this upcoming Monday,

geof

Well, looks like it is officially Geofharries! :) (I'll be in touch this week some time.)

This contest was great! Hopefully, I can afford to run a contest for one of my own sites someday... it should go much quicker without having to play a relaying role. ;) Anyway, thanks again Palmer, PB, and QSDA for your time and effort! (you had some great designs... I hope you can put them to use elsewhere... it shouldn't be hard to find a good home for them ;))

Looking forward to it. They are a little more fun when you're able to give your own comments right away, it keeps the contest flowing.

Right, old entries never die they just get modified and used on other projects. :P In addition, making an entry helps perfect your technique and gives you something new for your portfolio. It's all good :)

Thanks Michael, happy to have your contest. Stop by the testimonials forum if you have time .
