Hi all!
River City Pet Watch has a wonderful professional logo and now we need a warm, cuddly mascot to represent us. Of course, I've come back to the masters.
This is my idea: I would like a drawing of a shetland sheepdog (or a collie) to represent my own dog, Hannah (see my welcome page (http://www.rivercitypetwatch.com) for an example). I love this sheltie, especially the sweet face, but I need my own.
I will use the illustration on my website, newsletter and flyers. Later, I will want to embellish her with different things such as eyeglasses for the newsletter (Hannah is the editor ;), a santa hat at Christmas, etc., etc. For the $100 prize I would like a plain sheltie and then one with a leash in her mouth. I realize that $100 is the minimum recommendation for an illustration, but I want you to know that I am willing to up the prize for embellishments, a companion kittie, different poses, etc. In other words, if you want to go all out, feel free to do so :D.
All this stuff (http://www.designoutpost.com/illustrations.htm) will need to apply.
Please let me know if you need any pictures or any other explanations.
Thanks and I'm hoping you're not too busy for this one. :D

 :D
It's really quiet around here. If you are interested in entering, would you just let me know? I gave a 10-day deadline because that is what is recommended; however, I really need it as soon as possible. If I get a design I like, I will close the contest early and move on to the next step.
Waiting to see if anyone is going to enter your contest feels kind of like waiting to get picked for a game in elementary school. :P

I'm interested ;)
I have some questions:
1. do you want the dog sitting like in your welcome page or maybe you would like some other pose? Maybe you have some photo or link to a reference image? Any photos of your dog would be of many help, also ;)
2. do you want the illustration to be cartoonish or realistic? Or a little bit of the two (stylistic)?
3. do you plan to use it on the web only or also on other media, like in printed stationaries (business cards, letterheads) t-shirts, embroidery and such? The number of colors to use will depend on your reply to this question ;)
4. You will probably need new poses and details in future on different occasions, so it maybe a good idea tha you just run this contest for the two mentioned poses (with and without the leash), which have very little differences, and then just contact the winning designer directly every time you need any other pose and deal the price with the person. Just an idea. ;)
Cheers!

Alex, so happy you are interested!
1. do you want the dog sitting like in your welcome page or maybe you would like some other pose? Maybe you have some photo or link to a reference image? Any photos of your dog would be of many help, also
I like the dog sitting but I am open to other opinions and ideas, especially from artists. ;) I will get some photos posted tomorrow, but I am not the best photographer so I don't have many. You could use Lassie as a model. :lol2:
2. do you want the illustration to be cartoonish or realistic? Or a little bit of the two (stylistic)?
Ummm...this is a hard one for me because I'm not sure of the definition of each. I believe I want stylistic, though. What would you call the one on my welcome page? I like it.
3. do you plan to use it on the web only or also on other media, like in printed stationaries (business cards, letterheads) t-shirts, embroidery and such? The number of colors to use will depend on your reply to this question
I'm not going to use it on business cards, letterhead or t-shirts. I will probably just use it on the website, the quarterly newsletter (which I do in Pagemaker and covert to PDF with link on website), and posters/flyers. I will print the flyers and newsletter at home or at Kinko's (do you have Kinko's?) and will not do any heavy duty printing, so go ahead and use as many colors as you like.
This will be our "team mascot" so to speak. Very informal. I have a professional, very nice, El Kootcho logo for the formal stuff. My idea is for something fun and cute that will make people go "ahhhhh...".
By the way, I'll be holding a poster contest immediately following this one.
4. You will probably need new poses and details in future on different occasions, so it maybe a good idea tha you just run this contest for the two mentioned poses (with and without the leash), which have very little differences, and then just contact the winning designer directly every time you need any other pose and deal the price with the person. Thanks for the direction. Opinions and advice are welcome! :D

I realize I didn't give you guys much to go on, just the one cartoon, so I have scanned some pictures of my dogs and am uploading to my webpage here (http://www.rivercitypetwatch.com/gallery.html). It is taking forever to upload and will probably be a pain to view. Sorry, please forgive. Also, let me know if you need to see some better pictures and I will hunt some down on the net and post.
Christian, your dog makes me smile everytime I look at her! :)
I like the style, so please continue!
Love the flirty eyes, love the fur, the colors and hair around the ears. Very realistic. The snout could be a little thicker and not so skinny. Same with front legs. Could you draw the front legs a little straighter and thicker? Also, your dog has what we call "gentleman" ears :P . A lot of shelties have them, but the ears should really tip over a little at the top. Supposedly, tipped ears contribute to a softer expression, which is desirable in the breed.
Thanks for your work. I like her!

Hey Kristyn! :lol2: I'll refrain from making any jokes about the "gentleman" censor. A lot of the pictures that you posted didn't show up for me, but the ones that did looked really good. I had searched for collies on the net but the ones you posted look way better!
Here's the next draft. I made a few changes, most noticeably the snout. I was looking at the pictures and decided to draw her with the snout facing forward just to see how she would look and liked it so decided to show you that version now. Give me your op on which version you prefer and which other details do you want changed back, changed completely, or to remain the same. After all details are decided, I'll start working on the final version.
PS. Thanks Kogan!

Christian,
Nice job on the ears. The tail is great, so are legs and fur, etc. I like the face on the first illustration better, and have been trying to pinpoint what it is all day. This is what I have come up with: the face looks softer & sweeter, eyes not as big, and not as much difference between width of face and snout (but still a little too pointy). I like the lighter color with the white blaze going up the face. Don't worry about making the drawing look like one of my dogs (markings, etc). I would rather it just be recognizable as a sheltie with a sweet expression. Another small detail I really like on the first one is the peachy pink color on the inside of the ears.
PS: Thanks for no jokes about censor.

What do I like about this illustration?
First, I recognize it to be a sheltie.
Second, I like the sweet look on the face, the tilt to her head, and the little smile.
Other than it looking like a sheltie, the expression is what I think I am drawn to. Everything else is cute but not essential.

I found this link (http://www.netrover.com/~rowangln/frameset.html) which shows a nearly perfect looking sheltie. Under "breed standard" on the left, click on "type". You may want to see "profile", too. Plus they have tons of cute puppy pictures :P . I'm not looking for perfection, but just thought it might help with drawing the face.

Christian, sorry to hear you've been sick. Hope you are back to normal soon!
Very nice! I would still like the snout/nose a little thicker. I think a wider snout will make her look more like a sheltie than a collie. Am I messing up the style by asking this? Artistic opinions welcome. :) Also, along the same lines, the first drawing you did, I asked you to straighten the front legs, now I think the curved legs may go with your over all design better. What do you think?

Alex, I'm happy you found some time. Thanks for your submission.
Your's is a very different style, and that is totally OK. The two things I am after are 1) recognizable as a sheltie and 2) a sweet expression.
I think your illustration looks like a sheltie, but would like her to have a sweeter expression. I know it is kind of subjective, but by sweet I mean soft, pretty, gentle or kind.
Please continue ~ I like! :)

Hey Alex!
Yeah, there is a difference, although people always say, "Oh, it's Lassie!" when they see my dog. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone said that. :lol2: Actually, shelties are Shetland Sheepdogs and you can compare the difference between shelties and collies to the difference between Shetland ponies and horses. Just a little tidbit. People are always crazy about their breed, aren't they?
Thanks for your work. :)
Memphis

"There is obviously no denying that, at first glance, the Shetland Sheepdog looks like a miniature Collie. However, closer examination reveals some subtle but important differences. The Sheltie head is a long, blunt wedge, not as narrow as that of the Collie, with a definite stop (the step up from the muzzle to the top of the skull) which is less defined in the Collie. The Sheltie head has more room for the almond-shaped eyes. In addition, the Sheltie is not as refined for its size as the larger dog; just as a magnified Shetland pony would resemble a heavy draft horse rather than a riding horse, so a proportionally enlarged Sheltie would be heftier than a modern Collie."

Hi, Kristyn, thanks for the info
So, is my sheltie recognizable as sheltie and in case she isn't - what would be the details that I have to improve?
Meanwhile, I'll try to figure out how to make her look sweeter :D
(P.S. it's a she, I just can't call her "it" :D )

[QUOTE]
Alex, sorry if I confused everyone. In a drawing the difference would be so small that I think anyone would have a hard time distinguishing between the two. In fact, I'm not sure that I would know that the illustration on my welcome page was a sheltie, rather than a collie, if it hadn't been labeled "sheltie". That's why I said in my earlier posts that you could draw a sheltie or a collie, and that you could use Lassie as a model. So, let me rephrase: I would like the illustration to 1) resemble a sheltie and 2) have a sweet expression. Since both drawings are cartoon types and not realistic, I don't see where the body makes too much difference. I mean, since cartoons are not really proportional anyway (right ??). On Chistian's drawing, however, the nose is long and thin (well, I guess sheltie's are too  , but maybe not as much) and that particular head detail does remind me of a collie. I just got off on a tangent explaining the differences...you know, I'm just proud of the fur-kids.
All that to say, your illustration is a sheltie. Pass! B)
Here is some more specific feedback.
1. I really like the way you drew the body, and the way she is sitting (Christian, don't change yours :P ).
2. I like the ears and the way they tip forward. Maybe the left ear could sit up higher on the head?
3. I really like the white, fluffy "mane", but that makes "her" a "him". :P Like lions, the males have a big poof of a mane and the females not so much of one. I think maybe just trim down the "mane" just a little on the left side - not too much, though, because I do like it!
4. Another suggestion is to maybe make the eyes more almond shaped than round.
Alex, I hope this helps. Please keep in mind that not only am I not an artist, but I am also a "big picture" kind of girl and not so great at pinpointing the details, so feel free to "push me" a little if you need more. I'm trying to be a "good" contest holder :D and give you enough direction, but its also hard to critique someone else's good work. You and Christian have both done a wonderful job! Thanks so much!

The difference between shelties and collies is pretty subtle, what with the long, "lassie" type coat and long muzzle and all. I mean, how many dogs look like that! But the difference between Danes and Mastiffs is huge! Uh...no pun intended. :)

Well... :innocent: ...since you asked... a few things on my wish list would be to:
1. carry the white blaze on her muzzle up between her eyes or maybe just make another white mark in middle of head
2. lighten the mahogany fur (the darkest) just a little
3. not sure about this one, but I'm thinking I would like more white collar showing, but let me print out and look pics for awhile and I'll get back to you
This is fun! I just say what I want and you just :wizard:

A bit off-topic!
Hi Alex and Bethie and Memphis,
Alex: a rescue bunny is a bunny rescued by an animal shelter while it has been dumped by the owners (just out on the street, in forest or whatever) or because the owner has brought it to the shelter for numerous reasons (it bites, family is allergic  (often just an excuse), children don't pay attention to it any more and the bunny is sitting only in its case (mostly a too small one). Not many people know of bunnies being in shelter and therefore ...................... I am opening soon a site (www.rabbitpal.com) where only rabbit shelters can post their rescued bunnies.
Bethie
I am so happy you rescued those bunnies. When my site is on-line would you be willing to write a little story - with pics of your great pets - about your rescue bunnies? so to let other people know rescue bunnies ARE great pets! I will e-mail you when the site is online.
Only waiting for Henrique (hheine = designer, programmer) to make it all work!
Memphis: Your sheltie look gorgeous!!
I like the one of piece-of-mind but ..... actually I like them all :) :)
Good luck with your decision! I know it can be tough.
Regards,
Marie-Jose
I was the one who did a rabbit logo in january here at DO.

Alex (I know you've been waiting the longest ;) ),
What I really love about yours is the body. Even though yours is the most cartoony, the way she is sittng, the overall shape of the back, legs, collar (white puff) is the best.
Ahhhh! This is hard for me to put into words. Although it is more of a cartoon, the proportion and curves, etc. seem more "real" (or maybe I just like them). Having said that, and now to be even more confusing  , I think the face and head are too cartoon-like and I would like that to look more realistic. I know, I know. You're probably thinking  "What is she saying?".
Bottom line, I like the body too much to discount your illustration, but I'm not as crazy about the head, and I'm at a loss to tell you how to change it.
Memphis
03-12-2004, 08:51 AM
Piece of Mind,
I am enjoying! :)
Yours is just so pretty and so realistic. I love the whole head, face and collar.
I like the eyes better without the "extra eyelash", but there is something about the mouth that I am not crazy about. Also, the body is not realistic enough to go with the face & head. I'm not sure, but what if you made her sit facing foward? I also realize that most of the pictures I have posted show the head and not many show the body, so I will try to find some body shots if that will help.
Great work! I feel somewhat ridiculous critiquing it.

That is so cute! The soft colors and the style give it an "old-fashioned storybook" feel. That is the best way I can describe it.
Did you intend for it to come out that way or was it an accident? :) What I mean is, do you think that you could draw more animals (kitty, bunny) with that same look? I'm not asking you to draw it now, I'm just asking if you think you could?
Thanks for your charming entry.

Christian, the proportions are perfect on this one. Thought I liked the ears before, but these are best! This one barks at me, "I'm a S-H-E-T-I-E!" If you refine this one, keep lips black and keep hair kind of coarse. White hair on front legs can be smooth and soft looking like last few dark shelties, though.

Really though, this was a very fun contest for me also! At least until I had to pick a winner. That part is hard, especially when everyone of the designs was superb. You all made it look so effortless, but I know alot of your time went into the designs
Alex, Piece of Mind, Sunil and Annia, thanks so very much for participating and making it so difficult to pick a design. Annia, I love your style. If I could have chosen two, I would have picked yours, too. I will pm you about maybe doing some other drawings soon. Alex, I really hate to say good-bye to Cher and the others. She was a favorite for sure. Sunil, very nice work. Many people liked yours the best. Piece of Mind, what can I say? Your entry was beautiful and I think worthy of a frame! Thank you again everyone.

Hi Christian!
Sorry for the delay. I'm in the process of moving.
I made a composite of my favorite five plus the last one you posted. I liked all of these, but the over shape and proportion of #1 is what grabbed me. I like the way the white collar comes down in front, the ears, the feathers around the face, the size, the expression.
On #2, I like the face and expression. I like 2 less than 1 because chest is wider, white collar is more "pointy" and the "feathers" around her face aren't as "feathery".
On 3, 4, and 5, I like the expressions and faces. I do still think that you nailed the nose and face shape with #1, but I like either type of eyes. If first type of eyes are easier, that's ok with me. I like them both
I know I haven't commented on the new one, but I am totally beat. I will have to get back tomorrow when I am fresh.
I'm curious, did you draw 1 and 2 by hand?
Thanks again for all your work. I'll try not to drive you crazy and finish up quickly. ;)
Be back tomorrow.

Christian
03-17-2004, 02:12 PM
Hey Kristyn! The last one's hair has been smoothed out, the dark hair has been turned a light brown, the nose is a tad tad smaller, the light tan color has been livened up a bit and hmmm, think that's it! :D
So you want to go back to 1?
Memphis
03-17-2004, 08:14 PM
What I meant was that I thought maybe you drew 1 and 2 with colored pencils (or something) and then scanned them, while you did the latest on your Corel program. What do I know?
I really like #1. I even like the brush strokes, maybe just a little smoothing around the front legs. I like the hair sticking up around the ears and looking kind of wild. I like the colors, face and expression. I guess what I am saying is that I like #1. :lol2: I appreciate you trying to smooth her out and make her extra pretty, but I like her not too smooth. ;)

Hi Christian ~ You've done a great job! I love her.
My wish list:
1. shape the white collar (front) like #1 instead of "round" (this is not absolutely necessary if too difficult, but think I like it best)
2. soften ear color a little
3. make ears a just a tiny bit smaller, like #1 or #2
4. carry the white "blaze" on snout a little farther up (like #1 or #2) and add a little between ears (also like #1 and #2)
5. add blue leash (pantone 301c or dilution) to match logo
Christian

Hey Kristyn! Before proceeding with the different versions, need your thoughts on the fixes you asked for! :D They were all slight changes, so tell me if you need them to be more noticeable.
Memphis
04-04-2004, 12:12 PM
Very nice! :) Changes are purrrfect!
For some final ideas...
What if you feathered her out just a little (use some of that secret conditioner)? I like the "spikes" but am wondering how a little blending and smoothing would look.
Also, what if you added a little darker color to the face for depth? Kinda like #3. Also, maybe a little black in with the darker brown around the face. Not too much ~ just enought so that the colors aren't so distinctly separate.
I'm not sure about these changes so I might change my mind once I see 'em.
Thanks Christian!
Kristyn

Hey Christian...what if you give me a "rough" file now so that I can go ahead and start my poster contest? They could use it to design the poster and then I could send them the "refined" file when you are finished. What do you think?

Note: leash should be pantone 301C to match logo/website. It can be a dilution (if that's what you call it) of 301C.

Heya, here's a small, layered PSD. It's all the designers will need! :D Sorry for the delay!

;) Not at all, was waiting for you to start the other contest. Thought you were MIA. I'll have the files by tomorrow.
