$144 Kettlebell Sport T-Shirt
Deadline April 6th
Comrades,
I am looking for a Tshirt Design for the 2004 US National Girevoy Sport Championships. Girevoy Sport (aka kettlebell lifting) is a brutal sport which pits man against weights again st each other. Each competitor has 10 minutes to lift a fixed weight, in this case 70lbs as many times as possible in 10 minutes. It is a complete test of strength, endurance, and pain tolerance.
This brutal sport, which originated in Russia over 50 years ago, has come to the US only in the past 3 years. It has really caught on among Military, Law Enforcement and hard living men and women throught the US. Almost a dozen local competitions throughout the US have taken place so far. On May 15th of this year we are hosting our first National Kettlebell Lifting Championships in VA. We are a long way off from challenging the Russian but there are some pretty determined men and women who want to give it a shot
Here are some links of kettlebell lifting (aka Girevoy Sport) in action.
http://www.kettlebellsport.com/FL020704/
http://www.stormloader.com/setnewfocus
Here is a current logo I have. http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com
Finally Here is a guy lifting two 70 lb kettlebells, the top number is his rep count and the bottom number is the timer. http://www.kettlebellsport.com/cj.avi It is best if you use windows media player and set it for constant loop.
If I come up with more pics and vids I'll post them.
What I am looking for is a cool t-shirt design or 2, to make a t-shirt for this event.
Here are some things associated with kettlebell lifters
Raw Power
The work capacity of an Android
The Pain Tolerance of an Immortal
So as you think of your designs, keep these slogans in mind as I would like to incorporate one of them or something similar into the logo.
Thank you
Palmer

Here's an idea
If you like PLMK
MOZ
DomingoRubioJR

Moz.
Its cool. I like the idea of the Flag. Definitely.
The image of flexing a bicep muscle reminds us too much of a body builder. Kettlebell lifters differ from bodybuilders in that they do not focus on building muscle, but instead focus on strength-endurance. Muscles come as they may.
I like the thickness of the black outline and possibly where you are going with this.
Picture "Wirey Strength" or "Skinny Strong". Muscles are cool though, just not in the bodybuilding/posing sense of it.
The following site is loaded with pictures of KettleBells in action. And world records etc.
http://www.stormloader.com/setnewfocus/index.htm
Make sure to check out http://www.stormloader.com/setnewfocus/BeerDude.html :D
Here is a video with a perspective view. http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/vide..._rubio55reps.rm (http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/videos/chris_rubio55reps.rm)
If you use a drawing of a guy or gal, the kettlebell lifter might look tough, and indestructable. I thought maybe an android would be cool, but whatever you come up with, is cool.
DomingoRubioJR

Here is some more direction.
The Logo must somehow incorporate a kettlebell
http://www.stormloader.com/setnewfocus/KB_yorkie.html
Since the event consists of two parts, the Jerk and the Snatch, what I would like is a picture of two guys lifting kettlebells. One guy performing the jerk the other the snatch.
If you click on my username over there on the upper left corner, you will see a picture of the 2 Kettlebell Jerk.
You can use that as a template for the Jerk but you can modify it.
You can also use this
http://www.kettlebellsport.com/cj.avi
or this
http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/imag.../test/jerk1.jpg (http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/images/test/jerk1.jpg) (pick a guy with black shorts :lol2: )
For the snatch you can use this
http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/imag...st/horoneko.jpg (http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/images/test/horoneko.jpg)
or
http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/imag.../test/steve.jpg (http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/images/test/steve.jpg)
or
http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/imag...test/p10-p1.jpg (http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/images/test/p10-p1.jpg)
or
http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/imag...est/snatch1.jpg (http://www.kettlebellconditioning.com/images/test/snatch1.jpg)
Now if the guys can look like androids, half man half machine that would be doubly cool. Something like the Terminator or Terminatrix
On the top I want it to say something like
US National Girevoy Sport Championships
May 15th 2004
or
2004 US National Girevoy Sport Championships
and a tag line of
Strength Endurance
or
Raw Strength
or something like that.
If you can put an american flag somwhere in there that would be great but not necessarily a requirement

Hi, Domingo ;)
A question for you: are you going to silkscreen this shirt? If so, what would be the number of colors you're going to use (or to afford)?
Thanks in advance ;)
DomingoRubioJR
03-22-2004, 06:47 AM
Alex,
I was thinking red, black on a white t-shirt but I am open for designs. I will check on the cost and method of printing and will report back as soon as possible today. I am open to making it colorful.
DomingoRubioJR
03-26-2004, 12:05 PM
Guys,
I think the shirt will be silk-screened, unless you all know of a cheaper way.
The t-shirts are white. The color theme should be USA. and black. BUt it could be B&W or whatever.
I am anxious to see your ideas. Thank you.

Well...
It's not the illustration you were looking for, but it's something. I was interested in this one from it's start, but since I'm not an illustrator, I didn't want to enter. I've had this in my head from the start, so I figured, why not, I'll post it.
So...
Here you go.

MOZ is back!
went to your website and found this guy hanging out
Maybe this will work? Haven't added raw power or ??? yet
please let me know what you think
DomingoRubioJR
03-27-2004, 04:39 AM
It looks really nice MOZ. Could you add raw power on either side of the KBs at the top? And let me see how it looks without the yellow too please.
If you would like, I own the copyright of that picture, so you are free to use it. Also if you check back to that site again I've updated it. Feel free to use the middle position as well.
If you would like the source I have a .eps file. Maybe I can have one of the administrators post it? So you can play around with the size, and also the facial features. I'm not sure how many people would want my facial features on a shirt. :lol2:
I'll send the .eps to an admin for posting.

One more note to everyone, Sorry about this:
The title should be
US National Girevoy Sport Championships
May 15th 2004
or
2004 US National Girevoy Sport Championships
and a tag line of
Strength Endurance
or
Raw Strength
Sorry for my mistake.
Blackspot,
Brilliant, can we play around with the font? Something less blocked yet still forceful. Also I think I may want to have the tag line be Strength Endurance rather than raw power. One more suggestion, since it look like you can incorporate existing photos, could you also include one of a snatch. So have two guys in it, one doing the jerk, the other doing the snatch.
Thanks
MOZ,
For the change I asked you to make, could you use strength endurance instead of raw power?
Thanks
DesignGeneral
Are you still going to have an entry?
Just J
03-27-2004, 08:58 AM
since it look like you can incorporate existing photos, could you also include one of a snatch.
Well...
Here is my problem... ;)
Since I bitmap traced a photo and was lucky enough that I could manipulate to be one color and still resemble a person, the chances of me doing that with a completely different photo of more or less the same thing, are pretty slim. Also, if I can do it, the two pictures will look completely different and probablr out of place. If you happen to have 1 picture of the 2 people, I may be able to try and pull those out.
In the mean time...
Here are the changes without the additional person.
DomingoRubioJR
03-27-2004, 09:07 AM
Thanks Blackspot.
I will try to find two of the same guy, but like you said , it may still look different.
If its not going to work, then lets not worry about it and stick with the idea you have. I will be receiving more input from the peanut gallery shortly.

Diane,
I really Like the way you cleaned him up and added the eye. That is like what I am looking for. Brilliant idea and brilliant artwork! Is there any way you can use a different backdrop?
MOZ,
You're design is very good. I like the back drop. The colors of the Stars and Stripes. Can you do away with the guy in the crouch down position? And add in the words 1st Annual US National Girevoy Sport Championships?

Hello I'm Back
Here's the revision I also made one for a black shirt (MEAN looking!)
I'm sorry that I can't make the image any better, but Illustrating is NOT my strong point
Also on either side of men it needs something maybe date on one side, location on other
people tend to like that info on tshirts

MOZ,
I really like your design. Looks good. I would like to get some more feedback on it from several other people who are involve in the selection process but it looks promising.
Alex
Both of your logo designs look great, I like the cyrillic Rs. I was looking for more of a competition pose, either the jerk or the snatch, but I will consider your entries because they would look great on a t-shirt. Would it be too much to ask to see the words "1st Annual" before US National.
Visual Sense,
I Think I like the one you posted on 3/17 at 5:24 pm better than the latest two. The first is great, just not sure how it would look on a t-shirt.
So far, I like all the entries. Its just a matter of choosing a winner. They are all being considered.
Thanks

We are going with Raw Power. Can you repost your second design with the words
1st Annual US Girevoy Sport National Championships
May 15th, 2004 Sterling, Virginia
MOZ
Can you add the words May 15th 2004 Sterling, VA
Visual Sense
Could you change the wording to incorporate
1st Annual US Girevoy Sport National Championships
May 15th, 2004 Sterling, Virginia
into your latest design. We are doing away with the phrase Strength-Endurance. The Phrase Raw Power is what has been decided upon. If that can fit without being too busy let me know.

DomingoRubioJR
03-31-2004, 05:50 AM
Blackspot,
Of course that is OK. Do you know if that will silkscreen well?
To anyone thinking of adding a design,
You do not necessarily have to use the athlete in it. It could be something as simple as having the the KettleBell in the middle of the logo. You can use your own design of the kettlebell, or even something totally abstract, a new design for the North American Kettlebell League so to speak
I like the drawings of kettlebells I have seen so far. They are the best illustrations of kettlebells I have seen on the net. We are tired of seeing the same old picture of a kettlebell for 3 years! its time for some new ones!
Just J
03-31-2004, 05:55 AM
Do you know if that will silkscreen well?
That is a very good question. I think it will be ok, but I don't trust myself answering that. I will speak to a few people and try to have a definite answer very soon.
Just J
03-31-2004, 10:18 AM
I've spoken to two other people. One has done a lot of silk screening and another that is an embroiderer that farms out screen work. They both don't see a problem with the design working with silk screening. I'm still waiting for one other person to get back to me, but who knows when that'll be. If you'd like, I can ask the other designers here at D.O. their opinion.
Silkscreen is very forgiving. The heavier the line the better
I worked as a screenprinter in the past for 6 years these designs will work great

The biceps shot is still too body buildish. I like your choice of fonts. I would like to do away with the biceps.
MOZ,
on march 30th 12:26 am
I think the font needs a little work, what can you do for me?
Black Spot,
Last one, not dramatic enough. needs more color. Is it possible to make the flag look like is flying high rather than laying flat.
Also for anyone,
here is a design from Russia South National Champ. Maybe it could inspire another idea. <img src='http://www.kettlebellsport.com/images/russ_south.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />Would it be possible to see and a flag in the middle of the kettlebell, instead of that Russian House with the words 1st annual etc. going around it . The flag should be flying not flat.
Thanks

It was very hard to choose a winner. All of the designers had plenty of logos I wanted to use. I spent considerable amount of time deciding which one would be best for my competition. After much deliberation I have come to a decision that I feel is the right one. Black Spot, your hired. I just need to get one slight revision and possibly use more than one of your designs.
