Evolution logo - $100

A new business for me 'Evolution' is a surf photography company based in Cornwall, Uk. We will offer surf shots as stock images to surf manufacturers, travel companies etc.

In addition to the surf shots we will also shoot surf lifesyle images, portraits , fashion etc. Also Beach and water shots.

Want a fairly simple, fresh logo incorporating 'evolution'. Nothing too contrived just something simple, cool and groovy that gives a feel for what we do. Ideally not just text, a symbol/graphic of some sort would be great.

Logo will be used within a website, stationary etc.

I have another comp going on for Gringo mag the two arent connected except that evolution photo's will supply the magazine.

I like the basic idea of combining the 'e' and a wave. Not sure it's clear enough as to what it is or bold enough. I'm not keen on the font or the drop shadow.

Do you think it would look better with some sort of graphic above and evolution below?

It's definitely a good initial concept. Would be keen to see other ideas also.

You're right... that is similar to the Rip Curl id. My main concern was staying away from Quiksilver! I'll make some edits and post soon. ;)

Moz, like it. D'you think the board dominates the name evolution too much. Could it be smaller and maybe a different colour so that the name stands out more.

Hi Chris. The bottom right one I like the best. Not 100% sure about the font. Bit worried that there is no connection with photography but having said that does there need to be??? I suppose it will always be accompanied with phots anyway. What d'you think?

I agree, it doesnt necessarily need to convey photos, but I can add a "film" type element to it to see if you like it...

Let me know? How about the colors? The reason I shose that font was that it was not linear/straight, and a little "wild" looking...as evelution usually is...just my thoughts...

Suppose they are fairly interchangeable. Although evoloution is specifically surf photography, gringo is gonna be a magazine which will be surf based. It can be a bit funkier I suppose, what does that mean???? Anyway cheers Chris I'm off to get my head down will check back in the morning.

I went straight black and white on this initially because I was thinking it might need to be done in a variety of colors, depending on the background (printing the logo in whatever 1 or 2 colors would show up well on each particular photo). But here's a grouping in color. Color is easily changed, though, so if you're not fond of any of these, I can always try more. I also altered the wave a bit to give it a more flowing look.

Christian Thats really good, strong, lots of impact. Love the graphic just dont know where the text looks best?? Would it look daft if it was to go round the graphic some how? The shutter looks great, seems to flow almost in motion, wavelike - a wave barrelling seems to have this kind of rotation. If the text went round the outside of it perhaps it would flow also - maybe start as a gradient this might give it the feeling of moving similar to the graphic, evolution - never standing stilll and all that!

Colour is really effective. The design has lots of impact and is really srong, I like it a lot. In a previous design you used a whole shutter in this youve used half of one. Any chance I could see one with a full shutter in ths style in colour?

Christian Now I'm stuck. I like the lighter blue. evolution looks better in the lighter blue than it does in light grey, but is it better than the black? I dont know!! I think its horses for courses. I'll show it to the wife when she comes home, that way I wont have a choice!!!

Here's another color variation playing with the same "evolution" theme as the graphic. :D Doesn't really use a gradient, but rather the four colors placed to make it look like one.

Hi Muvment thanks for the design. I like the style of the wave and the way it flows, my only dislike is the 'e' its contained in, it looks a bit like the old pac man muncher thing. If you could change that, what about the wave inside a lens diaphram. A few designs have been posted using the lens diaphram they look really effective.

Love it! I like the fact that the graphic can be versatile and suit different colours etc, its really good. My preference would be to use a font similar to the 2nd one down, would be good to see a few variations on that. A simple font without drop shadow that would be as versatile as the graphic, this looks good in colour or B&W and could easily be reversed so its kind of a black outline drawing against white ( or as a water mark for photo's so it has an outline and rest is transparent ).

My 3 favourites so far are by Christian sanfield, Radical Seed & Moz. They seem to have created designs that are surf based which is definitley the right direction.

Hi Arthouse. Certainly on the right track like the wave and the font, I just not kee on the board though. I dont think that I really want to use the negative strip in the design.

If this at all useful my favourite design (having shown them around ) is Christians'. The graphic has a subtle connection to photography, within that the wave concept flows nicely, it almost gives the feeling of motion or the barrel of a wave. I think this will also working particularly well as a spinning animation on the website whilst photos are loading (this is not the main reason I would choose it but a good extra).

You have probably submitted the most designs for this post, they're all good but just not hitting the mark. I think therefore it must be down to me not pointing you in the right direction.

I have found 2 websites that I would like to draw inspiration from for my logo and website style. They are:

www.aaronchang.com (paricularly his poster section)

I need a logo that is simple, uses a fresh single colour, it needs to be graphic and fit within the above site styles.

I hope these examples give a good indication of the style I ultimately want to replicate and that I'm not leading you all on a merry dance :whistle2:

Thanks for the entry. I like the fact that you have used a wave. It does seem fluid but I'm not keen on this being acheived through the use of a graduated colour. Would prefer the use of segments containg perhaps fading tones of the same colour, in much the same way as Christian has done with the use of a lens diaphram.

Not keen on: the water drop at the end of the wave or the font.

- you can rotate it and that's mean the wave

- you can zoom in and out the small wave and that's will mean the camera objective

the small wave and big wave mean evolution, the text that increase in size same thing. the style of text mean water and photo ;)

Sorry for delay, BIG computer problems! The only thing I'd like to see would be 'evolution' in lower case also the last few segments of the lens diaphram fading to almost white.


When done perhaps you could make the logo available as a tiff file saved to size 6"x8" or thereabouts.
