We need a logo for our IT consultancy. We primarily focus on web application development and Unix system administration and we prefer to work with non-profit and educational institutions. Our current web site, such as it is, may be found here: http://prognostikos.com/
The logo will be used primarily on the web site, so web safe colors are a must...though it will also be incorporated into stationary/business cards etc. (If this works out well we may hold other contests for web site templates and stationary or work directly with the winner to provide same.)
Message/Image we want to portray:
Wisdom, competence, work smarter not harder, we develop simple and elegant and effective solutions, etc.
Looking for proposals with one of three different basic themes:
1) An abstract logo with a few geometric elements...suggestion of a puzzle or assembling components or fitting the pieces together...
2) A logo incorporating a simple stylized/abstract owl...the owl is a symbol of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom.
3) An original interpretation of the message/image outlined above.
The winning logo will be clean, simple, professional and powerful.
Color preferences are white, black, shades of grey and greyish-blue. Though as you folks are the professional designers we're open to other suggestions or variations.
$120 - Ends 29 March 2004

Chris, I like the third version, but am a little concerned about the way it might look in the traditional place for a logo on a web page (upper left hand corner). As Prognostikos is a fairly long word and the owl is on top, it seems that there might be too much whitespace to the right of the owl along the length of the word.
I would also like to see some variations with even fewer colors and perhaps a different typeface.
Great start, though.

cool...
I'll work on that placement problem and try some different fonts...

Sorry Chris, I like the earlier version better. Please also note that there's no tagline.
I like the idea of the owl perching on one of the letters...mabye a smaller owl inside the P or on one of the letters at the end, for balance?

Here's my go at it. Give me your thoughts! :D It's a rough sketch but will be polished up.

Hi,
here are some suggestions :)

ChristianSanfiel: Nice and clean, but a bluejay comes to mind rather than an owl
pennyln: Great work...I like the winking owl. What about a variation with a bit less rounded head/pointy ears and more of a great-horned/barn owl-shaped head? Not so fond of the last with 'pro' in a different color.
Mowling: I really like your use of color, space, typeface...but the owl's not doing it for me. It's evoking a Decepticon or a fox. I do like your 'level of abstractness', for lack of a better way to describe it, but perhaps a bit more rounded. I dunno. You're on the right track, though...
beatz: I like parts of a few of your variations. The owl in the first choice is probably the best though the other round option is nice as well. Not in love with any of the typefaces, especially not the "greekish".
All/Others: The owl efforts are great, but don't neglect the other two options in my initial request. I'm really pleased with the quality so far...keep it up!
Thanks.

Sorry MOZ, doesn't quite capture what I'm looking for. Would rather see a suggestion of a puzzle than realistic puzzle pieces and the multi-colored name is not as clean and simple as I'd like.

pennyln: I like it better, though I'd like to see a darker version with less detail on the owl; more stylized and less realistic.
Mowling: Looks great. I can't think of any more revisions to this design.
The contest is still open, though. Please keep 'em coming!

Mowling: I spoke too soon. We would like to see a few variations on your last effort -- first to see how well it would scale, we'd like to see two smaller sizes, eg one small and one that splits the difference between the current size and the "small" size. "Small" is up to you to define though think business card size. If you think losing some detail on the owl head will allow it to scale better, give it a shot. Also, we'd like to see a version without the lighter triangle in the upper left corner, perhaps with all corners rounded like the right corners. Finally, it would be nice to see the owl by itself (though probably still boxed) in a few sizes to determine how well it functions alone. Thanks, and hope we're not asking too much.
Eagle: We like the direction you're taking, but aren't sure how well the shapes fit together...
ChristianSanfiel: The zoomed-in version is definitely better. How about changing the two shades of blue into one color that's either a grayer blue or a plain grey and trying a sans-serif typeface?
RAJA: We like the simplicity of the first version, though the mark could use some work. It looks a bit too much like a top...we don't want the feeling that we spin around, don't go anywhere and fall down ;) The second does't really do it for us - I probably shouldn't have said puzzle above...though we like to "fit the peices together", they're never mass-produced, already cut-out chunks that we just need to find mates for...many pieces require significant reshaping/customization or just plain creation. If that makes any sense ;)
CBaker14 and pennyln, still looking forward to your revisions, and we're definitely still open to other entries...keep 'em coming and keep up the good work!

Hi all...sorry for letting this go so far past the deadline without a response. Life and work bumped this to the bottom of the stack.
Mowling has won the competition, though we would like to see a few refinements. And unfortunately, I don't have time to get into the details right now. If we can declare the contest over and move to the revisions forum, I'll try to get something up later today.
Thanks to all who participated, and sorry again for the delayed decision.
