View Full Version : [Project Complate] Aktiom Networks Logo - $300
Aktiom

(Admin code added 2Square - X170981W)
Hello to all of you talented designers out there! My partner and I run a virtual private server (webhosting) company, Aktiom Networks (http://www.aktiom.net).
We're refocusing our target market, and will be redoing our website and copy as a result. However, we want a logo first, and will design our site around both it and our new marketing goals. So, do not feel that you should take any inspiration from our current website.
Our new focus is IT professionals, rather than hobbyists. We're going to emphasize our reliable systems, expert support, and personal service.
My goals for an oustanding Aktiom Networks Logo:
I want it to scale from small (business cards) to large (billboards), have color yet still look good in monochrome. So please include both large color versions and small monochrome versions.
Please stay with two colors besides black and white...three at most.
It should incorporate the company name, Aktiom Networks. "Aktiom" can be emphasized over "Networks" (see Rackspace's), and possibly having just "Aktiom" in the logo would be okay (see Adobe's). Also, using just "Aktiom" without additional images could work (see Dell's). I'm really open to any and all of your initial ideas...we'll sculpt it from there!
Strive to create an image as unique and recognizable as... Cisco (http://www.cisco.com), Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com), Adobe (http://www.adobe.com), Red Hat (http://www.redhat.com), or Dell (http://www.dell.com).
Simple, elegant, effective. I've set the bar really low huh? ;)
The deadline is April 5th. If some of you are in crunch-mode on other projects and an extension would really help, I'm open to that.
Prize is set at $300...let's have some fun!!!

Frank, thanks for kicking this off! Critique: maybe too much text..."a" to "aktiom" to "aktiom networks". The balance of it doesn't feel quite right either - it's hard to explain. Some variations on it would be good, but I think you've got something even better waiting inside!
Chris, neither of the fonts are working for me. Thanks for the attempt, and please keep trying! (btw, it's "Aktiom" and not "Atkiom" ;))
I'd say I'm a fan of iterative design. If you've got many variation and tweaks on an idea, bring them on! Don't worry about overwhelming me. You can follow Frank's lead of having variations large and in color, and then make your favorite and/or overall representative small and monochrome.

Hi everyone!
Let's get into it then...
Paula, the one that might have potential is the upper-left one in the first post. The other designs just don't feel right for the type of company Aktiom is. If you want to play with different colors and design of the one I mentioned, please do so.
Flava, it doesn't convey to the image I have in mind when thinking of Aktiom. Maybe it feels like there's too much going on...Planet Aktiom with a Satellite orbiting. If anything else springs to mind, please post it!
beatz, still has potential but doesn't feel right. Can you try some different shades of blue? Also, I like that you've tried to get an image/icon along with our name. It feels like it's overpowering the "aktiom" part though, it's too large and/or complex. Maybe something different? I wouldn't mind seeing some different fonts, if you can find something that works.
pennyln, thank you for the submissions, but none of them really stand out to me. You've still got a week left if inspiration strikes!
Eagle, nice! Can I see a variation in blue? I like the bold look of the design...so I feel a dark and stronger blue would fit. You're the designer though, so try what you think is right. Also, what about an arc (like Raja's, if it's ok with Raja of course)? It may look completely off with your design, but I'd be curious to see. I also like the abbreviated "Ak" that gives a unique image we can use, without having to spell out Aktiom. If you have any other ideas for an icon or image, please share!
arthouse, thank you for the submission, but I'm not sure I like the "k" being so obscure and faded. The red color doesn't appeal to me either. I've seen some great ideas from you in other contests, so please try again!
Mowling, cool ;). I hope I'm not leading you down the wrong path, but I'd like to see some iterations. My only concern is that it feels like a techno record label logo, or a skateboarding clothing company's. But, maybe it should be Aktiom Networks' as well! Can you turn the "K" around, and I'd like to see the "T" with a full cross-bar though it. I'm leaning towards the blue/gray designs, what about green though?
blackspot, my sister thought the rotated "a | n" looked like a "g", hehe. Could you try a version in caps? The font of "Aktiom" doesn't seem right either, and I'd be open to seeing some color variation (blue, gray, green, ?).
Raja, it's got potential but I can't see too clearly! Can you brighten it up a bit, and try an "A" with the cross-bar in it (maybe I just watched "Alien" too recently and I'm reminded of the opening credits ;))? Also, the arc on top doesn't seem right. I'm not sure if it should be removed, or if it just needs tweaking. If you've got any other ideas, please share them!
Finally, I appreciate beatz attempt with the bridge icon design. Just to be clear, I'm definitely not stuck on a text-only logo, so if you've got a cool idea for an icon please post!
Whew, thanks for the work so far everyone. I'm looking forward to where we're headed!

Hi Glenn
Here it is in blue. In my honest opinion, it's not as eye-catching as the red, being a bit muted in comparison. (imagine Adobe's icon in blue?...) You could of course deploy this mark in any colour that you chose...many companies adobt a symbol then use it in different colours in different 'fields'.
Let me have your thoughts and please notify me of any changes you'd like to see!

Raja, sorry but it just doesn't seem right for what I want. :(
Paula23, I realized that by choosing your design, I might be going too much into "Adobe" territory. Sorry about that.
beatz, thanks for the fresh start! The gold I don't like, but how about some bolder colors, like a darker blue, and red maybe? Can we see the pyramid to the left of "Aktiom Networks", that's probably how we'd use it in a banner ad. Could you also show some variations in color without the drop shadow? Finally, can you try a different font? Both my partner and I don't like the look of the lowercase "a" in "aktiom."
I like the monochrome version on the left best. It feels like the pyramid overpowers Aktiom though. I think a stronger or bolder font would help (see Adobe's logo for the balance I'm thinking of).
pennyln, thanks for the new attempt, but they seem a little too plain. I don't think potential customers will find them very memorable.
Eagle, you're right about blue being muted. I like the red better. I think the idea of using different colors for the k is interesting. Apple varied their logo between purple, blue, orange, red, etc., all the time. One other thing I'd like to see, how about the k in white, but with a thin black border so it's visible?
ChristianSanfiel, the "A" series feels a little too lawyer-firm like. Probably the font plays a part in that. B / 1 and B / 2 have possibilities. The others I'm afraid the "A" is a little too abstract. But, I don't like the "Networks" going so far out in B / 1. In B / 2, the A seems a little big, or thick. I wouldn't mind seeing some different colors either.
Thanks again everyone! :D
If you have any suggestions for me in what would better help you, please share! I'm really impressed with what you're all doing in the firemint contest. However, I realize how their name gives you something to work with (mint leaf and fire). With Aktiom, it's very abstract. I wish I could give you some images to work with...if anything comes to mind I'll let you know.

I'm baaaaack! So I've extended the deadline to April 10th, and upped the prize amount to $300.
The contest is still wide open, but there are a couple contenders from the submissions so far.
ChristianSanfiel, I like C/2! Can I see a smaller black & white version, for a letterhead or business card? If you have any ideas for a different font, I'd like to see. I do like the strong feel of the current one though.
beatz, I gave some feedback on your pyramid submission. I'd like to see the variations I suggested, as you're definitely a contender.
Mowling, we still like your submission as well. Please see my original feedback on some revisions I'd like to see.
As I said before though, the contest is still open to everyone else. To get some ideas flowing, you might do a quick browse of the history of Actium, from which we derived our name: http://www.encyclopedia.com/searchpool.asp...x=29&Search.y=9 (http://www.encyclopedia.com/searchpool.asp?target=actium&Search.x=29&Search.y=9) . There was a Battle of Actium, where the Augustus defeated Antony and Cleopatra, which in turn lead to the Roman Empire. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Actium for some other interesting info and links.

arthouse, very nice looking logos, but just not for us :(. I feel it's also got a little too much detail or complexity for the logo we want.
ChristianSanfiel, I was thinking regular Helvetica, or Helvetica bold for Aktiom. The font you chose is growing on me though. Also, my partner would like to see the wavy line flipped on the vertical axis, so the wide end is on the right. Might look bad, but we're curious. We both like the blue/red on top of the pyramid instead of the bottom.
DesignGeneral, not really what we're looking for. Both my partner and I weren't quite sure how to interpret the "R" design, or what it meant.
ElKootcho, I really hope we something from you!
blackspot, good shot at incorporating some actium elements. But it doesn't feel right to either of us...it reminds us of a bullseye target, rather than the elements you were trying to convey.
Eagle, just doesn't feel right for a high-end hosting company targeting IT professionals. I do have a favor though. Your second design on http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...opic=3581&st=30 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=3581&st=30) caught my eye, but it's not there yet. Could I see a regular A (with cross-bar) inside the red shape?
muvment, cool! Definitely a contender.

Just_G, I definitely like! I'm concerned that "Aktiom" will be hard read when scaled down and printed on a business card. Maybe it just needs to be darkened, could I see how that would look?
arthouse, we both like your latest submission. The only request right is to see if the icon can look a little more like an A. Can you try playing with some different possibilites to try and make it more clear? You could make it all one shape rather than two, and remove the shadow if it interferes as well. I have a feeling it will look best as two distinct shapes though...
ChristianSanfiel, thanks for indulging us, but your original design of the wave and font is definitely better! Designers probably do have better aesthetic senses than computer nerds :D
cursal, wow, thanks for taking the time for the custom A/M type. But, it just doesn't work well with the fonts you've chosen to follow it up with. I like the fonts themselves, so I think the A/M itself won't really work with what we're looking for. :(
DesignGeneral, after seeing your sail submission, I realized that the font doesn't appeal to me either. I'm partial to helvetica, arial, times new roman, or that new font Apple is using (http://www.apple.com/ipodmini/). I don't think you should spend more time on these particular submissions.
MOZ, good imagination! Just doesn't feel right for us though, and the kind of customers we want to attract. Sorry :(
wwwzone, not bad at all! The first one reminds me of the other origin of Aktiom...Aphex Twin. The second one has possibilites as well...I could see a tagline such as "Chart your own course" (or something much better ;)). I'll let you know if we'd like to see any changes though.
Thanks again everyone, you're all really stepping up and showing awesome creativity! Based off past submissions that appeal to us, it's safe to say we're looking for a "clean, simple, and elegant" design...both in the typeface and images. I hope the background of Actium is helpful, but I don't want to put you guys on the wrong track or anything.

Eagle, thank you, but it's not what I was hoping for after all. I appreciate you taking the time for the revision. The new submision is a no-go too :(.
muvment, this is kind of weird, but my partner sees a crucifixtion in the image. I think it's because of all the attention "the passion" has been getting, as I didn't see it myself until he mentioned it. Could you try something along the same lines, but change it to try and get rid of that aspect?
beatz, thanks, but I was wrong about the new font, and you were right in choosing the original :). Could you do a mock-up business card with the original design design, same size as what Just_G and muvment are using? One in gold, and one in blue along the lines of what Just_G and arthouse are using would be great. If you think a different shade would work better, please share!
arthouse, my partner isn't very partial to the connected versions that you tried, but likes the original, disconnected one. We both feel that it's a little too familiar though...I think MTV's amp program used to have something similar. I really don't know what to suggest, but can you try playing around with the concept some more?
RadicalSEED, creativemeasures, Fuse, cadii, DesignGeneral, thank you for taking a shot, but it's not what we're looking for. We're by no means committed to a certain submission yet, so please try again if inspiration strikes!
Just_G, seeing the logo in a business card really helps. It's looking good. Can I see the full "Aktiom Networks" instead of just "Aktiom"? I think Networks should be in a smaller font though. Any other ideas or tweaks you have, I'd like to see. Check out http://www.mac.com/ to see something similar, but keeping an "A" inside is important. I definitely don't want to lose that.
ChristianSanfiel, we still like your pyramid-flow idea. If it's not too much trouble, can I see a mock-up business card? I'd like to see one with your very first submission, that has the slanting A and M. Another one with the 2nd blue submission (blue on top of pyramid) would be great. Please use the original font you chose in that version.
Awesome work guys!!!
As a suggestion to all designers for future contests, letting the client see the logo in a context it will actually be used in is very helpful. For example, the business card submissions. I completely understand when you're just playing around with ideas that you shouldn't take time for a mock-up. But if they're showing real interest in your design, doing a business card could really help them out. :D

Here are the two mockups, with the slanted A's logo's colors changed.
Hi, here are a couple of more ideas. What do you think?

ChristianSanfiel, doh! I wasn't clear about one of the mockups I wanted. The blue pyramid is right, but I'd also like to see Design C / 1 from http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...indpost&p=65324 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=3581&view=findpost&p=65324). Thanks!
To everyone else, I'll be back tomorrow morning (8 hours or so) with comments and input from my partner.

muvment, thanks for the revision. But I think the loss of lines that disctinctly make it a cube makes it not as good as your first try. How about two white lines like the original has which define the faces of the cube, but made the thickness of the dark blue line surrounding the image?
MOZ, thanks for your latest attempt, but this doesn't feel like a workable logo for us.
markbeaudry, creative submission! We'll let you know shortly if there's any revisions we'd like to see, but for now it's good.
ElKootcho, both my partner and I like your two submissions, but I don't think they'll make our short list (it's so competitive with so many really good designs!). I'll let you know if we'd like any changes.
wwwzone, very nice on both designs. We'll let you know if there's any changes, but all your designs look nice as submitted.
Ratbaggy, both look good, but there are other submissions that feel more right for us at the moment. My main concern with the second one is that it relies on shading and lighting effects to look really good. We're shooting for a simpler logo, which your first submission is more in line with.
ChristianSanfiel, thanks for the fresh attempt, but I like your first pyramid design better. I'm not sure if you saw my last post, but can you do the mock-up business card I mentioned in http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...indpost&p=67800 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=3581&view=findpost&p=67800) ?
beatz and Just_G, I hope you're able to make a few changes as outlined in http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...indpost&p=67711 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=3581&view=findpost&p=67711). We'd still very much like to see them!
Thanks again everyone. :D I can tell you right now it's going to be very hard in picking a winner among so many outstanding designs. You're all a really talented and creative group of designers.

My partner and I have come up with our short list, each being equally considered:
1) ChristianSanfiel, with your pyramid-flow concept. Thank you for taking the time to make the business cards.
2) Just_G, with your networked-A concept. If you're around, please look at http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...indpost&p=67711 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=3581&view=findpost&p=67711) for my feedback.
3) wwwzone, with your sails concept in http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showt...indpost&p=67240 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/?showtopic=3581&view=findpost&p=67240). Both my partner and I realized there's something we like about it, just an innate attraction we didn't originally acknowledge. However, the font isn't right. It feels like something that will show its age 5-10 years down the road. We want something that will last a long, long time. Can you try a more classic font, like Verdana, Helvetica...something that aligns with a strong and reliable ship?
Can you also try a darker shade of blue for the sails, what you used for the Aktiom lettering (except the K)? I think Aktiom would then need a different color as well, I don't want it all the same blue. Finally, can you whip out a basic business card? It doesn't need to be color-matched or designed very nice. I'm mainly concerned how the image will look when scaled down.
To everyone else, the contest isn't over yet!. If you think you've got an idea that will blow us away, go for it! For us to make a decision, we need to see how it looks in a mock-up business card, nothing fancy. The prize awaits you... :D

Well I've only got a few minutes, I just want to announce Just_G is the winner! Both my partner and I really love the clean, simple, and elegant design of it.
I want to say it's truly been a pleasure seeing you guys work. You're all quite talented, and I sincerely thank you for your efforts. Choosing a final design was far from easy with so many quality contenders.
Admins, I still haven't heard from Just_G though...seems to be MIA. ;) I want to see some final variations on the design, so I don't consider the contest completely wrapped up.
I'm out the door to catch a flight to London, and should be able to check the forums sometime Monday. Hopefully by then Just_G has returned as well.
Thanks again everyone, keep up the outstanding work for future clients!

Hi Just_G, can I see the "Networks" in Diotima Roman as well? Unfortunately my computer doesn't have that font, so I can't do it myself. Adobe Illustrator format works fine.
Thanks,
