Contest Prize: $150.00

Hello,
My name is Jeremy, and I have recently opened a new services company in my area. We are a PC service company, by the name of “Oncall PC Guru’s” We target the upscale home user, the home based business, and the small business arena with the technology, know-how, products and services typically unavailable to home users, home based businesses, and small businesses with less than 15 employees. We are only a few strong but want to hit the market with a great image, and by seeing past designs I know we will have the perfect image from one of you talented artists. Our design must appeal to the home user equally as the small business. It must also appeal to both genders. So, nothing too gimmicky, nor too corporate feeling. I want people and small businesses to see my design and logo and instantly think our service is something that is within their range. I have searched high and low regarding the logo design. I have a few ideas that should be considered when designing:
1. I’d like to keep the color count to 2 or 3 colors max.
2. A text based logo, with a graphic that depicts a group of people (the guru’s) I was thinking three people would be sufficient. But I’m certainly open to other suggestions or designs.
3. I was thinking silhouettes of people instead of actual pictures or graphics.
4. I don’t like the idea of the integration of a computer in the design, but suprise me if you can
5. I like fonts such as verdana, and century gothic as a baseline, but I am open to all suggestions and designs even futuristic/high-tech.
6. I have envisioned an all uppercase lettered name in the logo design:
ONCALL PC GURU’S
7. Must be clean, contemporary, eye appealing, simple, and easily readable from afar.
8. Finally the logo must have a transparent background. For use in print or other uses.
The attached picture, is a graphic I found on a membership based design website, I like the general design, but I think a customized variant is more what I’m looking for. But don’t let that stop you from improvising. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to post them. I look forward to all of the great designs!
Thanks,
Jeremy :D
P.S. I must have ALL rights to the design when this contest is complete!

Jeremy,
Would the winning designer be able to use the logo in their portfolio?

The image can never be sold or given to anyone else for profit. Yes, it could be used for portfolios, or anything you like. I will be trademarking or service marking my logo. I just want it to be clear that I will need full ownership of the image. Thanks, and I look forward to some great designs!

But my question to all is, why such little attention to my contest?
It's probably your prize amount. I'd estimate that the average amount offered for a logo here on DesignOutpost is $100-$125 (with a couple hitting the $300 mark) and average business card layout tends to fetch at least $50 ($100+ with letterhead). So a "typical" logo/card contest would normally offer $150-$200.
Consider the amount of time it takes to generate ideas, sketch, refine and post ideas for both logo and business card. By the time it's all said in done many of use would be working for a very low hourly wage. And always running the risk (like any contest) of not winning.
I'd have to agree with ElKootcho, I personally don't enter any contests under $100, for logo only that is, and if business card is included, I don't enter anything less than $150. But everyone has their own views, and since you asked, that's just mine.

For what it's worth, I generally share Raja and Elkootcho's view on the matter.

Piece of mind, Thanks for the first entry...
I like the overall design, Don't care much for the people you used though. I would like to see the use of some other fonts and maybe a way to make the people and the "Oncall PC Guru's" to be more integrated together. I like the black and white logo for the most part. Not sure I care much for the dark background and lighter logo and text. Great first post, I look forward to more!
Hello

RadicalSEED: Im not sold on the logo, however I do like the greyscale logo for use in the business card design, just not sold on the logo. I like the integration that you did with the "O" and the guru's. Are there some varients to this design? I like the idea, just not sold on the logo yet.
MOZ: I'd prefer different guru's, and im not sold on the red/blue design. Looks a lot like pepsi :) I anxiously await more great designs.
ElKootcho: Good designs overall. I like the "guru's" that you used. Please insert an apostrophe between U and S. I like the handwritten style of oncall, but would also like to see a text version. I favor the first logo set posted, but without the clipart and drop shadows. I don't care for the box's around PC GURUS.
Thanks so much for the posts, It's a great beginning. I wouldn't mind seeing some initial business card designs, but they do take a backseat to the logo. In my initial description I stated things such as "all capital letters", "silouttes of people", etc. I just want to say that I AM open to other designs, or suggestions. This is just what I envision. Im not the least bit artistic so please include effects, logos, text that you envision or think are visually appealing.
Thanks,
Jeremy
p.s. sorry the feedback is slow, things have been pretty busy lately. I will try to feedback often, at LEAST once a day.

ElKootcho:
Since you are the only poster since my last message...., I'd like to see some variations of your designs. I like images 3, and 4. I do not care for the placement for the guru's in image 5. For image 3, can you do something other than red around the guru's? Can you integrate the toll free number and or web address. Just want to see what it looks like. The logo will be used for all types of advertising. For image number 4, I'd like to see a different color used for "oncall", and would like to see the logo without the vertical seperator. I'm wondering if the fonts could be different?.
I've done some looking around and I think I'm interested in a two color business card design. Either white, and 1 level of greyscale, or white and multiple levels of greyscale. I was thinking about having the guru's enlarged considerably and at a light level of grey on the background of the card. Then the rest would fall into place. Just a thought....
Anyways, the logos are looking good, I look forward to more designs and revisions!
Thanks,
Jeremy

Just a note: "PC Guru's" is grammatically incorrect. The apostrophe is used to show ownership. For example, "Jimmy's Car". The correct spelling would be "PC Gurus".
I mention this because it’d be a shame for a designer to base an integral part of their design around an apostrophe that doesn't belong.
Best,
Chris

Great additions to the contest! Here's my feedback..
As suggested by Muvment, please show correct grammer in future designs. No comma in "gurus". I stand corrected. Thanks Muvment for the language expertise. :notworthy:
Cadii: You have made a great attempt, and I like the design. However the design is too contemporary for my taste and my image. Im looking for a design that does not have an overly contemporary feel/ look. I prefer the horizontal business card design as well. Im not sold on the logo either, but it's a great start. I look forward to more designs from you.
ElKootcho: Great new additions, thanks for answering my requests perfectly. I like the designs you have posted, however I feel that something is still missing. I think you certainly have great idea's and design skills, but the logo's just don't do it for me yet. Can you make some additional designs or variations? I like the color usage in image elKootch_06. I don't care for the design of your last post, image #7. I think I'd like to see your designs with a different use of the gurus or with no use of the gurus. I do like the integration of the gurus in your business card design though. Can't wait to see more!
piece_of_mind: Great second submission. I like the overall design and feel for your design. I don't care for the headset. I do like the gurus you have used. They're the best I have seen yet. I also like the font used. I would like to see your design without the headset, and without the outer circle around the gurus. I have been tossing around the idea of not using the gurus, or subtlety integraing them into the design. So, I think a suble integration into the business card design would be apprecaited.
Let me say...everyone who has made a submission to this contest has done a wonderful job. You are all very talented. Im not sold on any one design at this point, but they are all looking great. I look forward to the revisions! :)
Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy,
You know what you want, but your initial brief actually states something different than your feedback suggests:
7. Must be clean, contemporary, eye appealing, simple, and easily readable from afar.

piece_of_mind:
Thanks for the quick revisions. However, I like the previous design more than this latest. The latest design takes too much away that I liked from the previous. I liked the text placement in the previous logo, and I liked the business card design, but wanted to integrate the gurus subtely, in a different way. The gurus do not necessarily need to be grouped with the text portion of my logo. Possibly adding the gurus as a greyscale or halftone in the original card background, or as in inverse in the darker swoosh area at the bottom of the card design. At this point, I'm not sold 100% on the use of the gurus. Some designs very similar to your previous post are requested, with some creative use of the gurus.
Cadii:
Perhaps it was a poor choice of words... For clarification only:
I am looking for a contemporary design, however, I feel your design was a little too "artsy", for lack of better words. I like your design, don't get me wrong. It's just a little over the top for what I have envisioned. As this contest has progressed, I have become more aware of my tastes, and what I can and cannot envision as a succesful logo design. I am certainly interested in seeing more of your work, just a turn it back a notch or two on the style of the design. Im sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for all your effort!

To all designers:
My deadline is nearing and I have yet to see revisions that I suggested a few days ago (please see previous posts and suggestions). Please submit the requested submissions so as we can continue this contest and choose a winning designer by the deadline date. Thanks so much for all of your efforts, you are all very talented. I hope I have not been too brutal with my opinions or suggestions. Just being honest and truthful in my opinions to lead each designer in the right direction to a perfect design for Oncall PC Gurus.
Paula23: Thanks for your submission. I like the color set, however I think the gurus overpower the name of the company. I would like to see a more subtle use of the gurus. I would also prefer that the gurus look more like actual silouettes of people. I look forward to future revisions. Thanks for your effort!
Thanks,
Jeremy

Thanks to you as well for the requested revision. I like this design better than your last, but im still stuck on the logo text. I think a different font would help. And I wonder what it would look like if the text was white, or grey in the body area of the gurus? Just a few thoughts. I look foward to seeing more! :)

ElKootcho's design from post #14 was select by a Poll (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7603).
Tonya,
I was not made aware of the policy you state regarding the poll. I had not read that anywhere that I can recall. Also, what exactly constitutes your decision to declare the contest abandoned? Without warning or otherwise you decided to hold a poll and let others vote and choose a winner for my contest. I am not happy with your policy, nor do I think it is fair to the originator of the contest, albeit overdue, to have their contest forcefully ended because a moderator deems it to be abandoned. I had several unforeseen things all happen at one time in my personal life that put my business venture on hold. In fact, it is on hold at this time, and I felt that the money that I paid Designoutpost.com ($150.00) was also on hold until I continued with the contest or made other plans. There have been no additional posts to my contest since my last message saying I would choose a winner in the "next day or so". That sounds pretty open ended to me, and I would have expected a response from the designers in the following days/weeks if they thought it to be unfair or abandoned. But I received no additional posts for the time. Perhaps, in the future I think your policy should also include a requirement to "attempt" to contact the contest originator PRIOR to deeming the contest abandoned, holding a poll, and awarding someone else's money. Hopefully, ElKootcho will be kind enough to bend the policy and make some minor changes to the design; otherwise I will have wasted $150.00 at designoutpost.com.
Awaiting your response...
Palmer
05-25-2005, 07:36 PM
A few things... you have not posted here for over a year. That is why we considered this project abandoned. In addition we did contact you. Tonya and Michael have sent at least 3 emails to the address you have with the forum without any replies. We don't want you to be forced to choose a design you don't like. On the other hand I don't want to take the win away from ElKootcho. This is quite a predicament. :(
