Hi everyone!
You all are so talented. I can't wait to see what you guys (and/or gals) come up with.
I'm getting ready to open a consignment and resale shop with the main product being clothing. I'm going for a "real store" feel. I'll be using this logo for everything. Something that will go through time and who knows, maybe entice someone to buy me up for a franchise. LOL
Possible tagline: more change for less change
Okay, I will list some words and phrases that might describe what I'm looking for.
Clean
memorable (who doesn't want that)
simple yet different?
POP (to stand out from the other signs it will be with)
I'm not exactly sure what I want but I'm open to all so have fun!
Colors that I'm pretty sure I DON'T want are : orange, green, brown, pink
Hope this is enough info. Thanks in advance!
changejar (Jennifer)
Oh and I forgot to add that it needs to look good in b/w and I need to be able to change the size of it for use on everything (hope that makes sense).

Surely someone can give it a shot! I admire several of the designers work (won't name specific names. Was referred by a friend who had a thrift shop logo done.

Sorry everyone to keep adding posts but after reading some threads I decided I better include the following:
I'd like to have the rights to the finished logo (but I don't mind it being in a portfolio). My plans are to trademark.
If it helps on the contest, you can just use the words Change Jar. Also, if anyone submits anything after tomorrow morning I won't be able to comment until Sat. night due to going out of town to get fixtures.
Thanks a bunch!
Anxiously waiting,

Jennifer,
Are you looking for something more 'professional' / minimalist / clean, or something with a bit of fun to it? I'm just trying to get a sense of the image you're looking to achieve for yourself.
Ellegance, class, sophistication?
Fun, care-free, cutting-edge?
Thanks much,
-Chris

Hi Chris and thanks for the questions,
Yes, definitely professional. I want something that people would look at and think,
"Wow, this is really just a resale shop?"
Clean, cutting-edge, class. I want to attract brand name mall shoppers (GAP, OLD NAVY, etc. etc.) There is a college here so I'd like it to be attractive to the students without alienating "family" women because we will have children's clothing also (at least at first).
I'm not into frilly, foo-foo, lacey, pink. Ellegance seems like to strong of a word for this.
Fun, but not cartoonish. Nothing to do with money (pictures of dollar bills/coins).
Hope this helps,
Jennifer

MOZ, you know how to make a woman happy! It's great to see a submission before I leave this morning. (no, this doesn't sway my decision) LOL!
It looks great, would even stand alone in b/w permanently. I'm concerned that when it's smaller customers will have trouble reading the tagline. Can you try it without the tagline and make the name larger? Also, how would it look in reverse for things like adding prices and/or names of categories?
I really like that font too. :)

Okay guys, I'm back and after looking at the submissions off and on for the last 2 hours I'm finally going to try and convey my thoughts in a productive way.
Jason, thanks for the submissions! Definite no on A (a little too simple), Definite no on C (not exactly sure why). B is perfect for what I had originally thought I wanted (professional, clean, pop). I'm still keeping B in my thoughts.
Moz, man that jar is just growing on me. Originally I didn't want anything to do with a literal interpretation of a jar in the design but I am seeing how much potential it has. Especially setting it apart from other resale and retail stores. I could see a few of these in different towns. I could see it on a t-shirt. You are right along the lines of what I feel I want now (hey, I'm a woman and I definitely change my mind often). LOL
Your graphics really helped me visualize the potential.
My mom is kinda helping me along and at first she didn't care for the jar (didn't understand what wanting a "signature" meant). But she has also said the jar is growing on her and that she could see the jar being to The Change Jar like Pepsi's logo is to Pepsi. She is torn between Jason's B and Moz's.
As a person still trying to figure out how stores make money selling t-shirts with their names (free advertising) on them it makes me ask this question; "Would I where a shirt with that logo on it?" These are the lines I am now thinking along for any other designers wanting to enter.
Hope I made some sense to you all and to myself when I reread this tomorrow after having had some sleep. LOL
Jennifer
P.S. I'm still giggling every now and again just seeing the name of my heart and soul for the time being, portrayed in such professional manners. Thanks all, this logo is very, very important to me and I feel it is going to be part of the main foundation in my business.

Hi Chris,
I really like it! :) Is there anyway you could incorporate a jar in there. Maybe an image in the background around the middle of the logo. Some of the jar sticking out the bottom and the top.
Also, is there a way to see the same set up but in the font that Moz is using?
Oh and HAPPY EASTER to everyone!

Jenn,
In making the changes you suggested, I'd end up with pretty much the same design as MOZ (same font, add the jar, etc.), and I don't want to infringe.
I'll let MOZ make the changes you suggested, as his idea seems to be the one you're running with at the moment.
Best regards,

Sorry if it seems I'm running with the jar thing. You guys (Chris and Jason), pretty much nailed the original idea I had.
Jason, thanks for giving it a try with a different jar. I didn't mean to imply copying Moz's.
Moz's rocks! I just thought maybe someone had a different idea with a jar that might be appealing.
To everyone: I'm going to go ahead and end the contest in 48 hrs if it is okay to do that. I'm having a bit of a hard time with the critique and comment part. :(

Allright, I think I have a plan in my head to be a little more productive with my comments.
First of all, I respect every one of the designers hard work and different styles. I think I messed up at the beginning trying to combine one with another. To rectify this I will just comment on what I like about each one and the other current designers and potential designers can do what they want with the information I give about each entry. If a designer chooses to keep his/her design the same then I can respect that because it is their design.
No more asking if one designer can take an element from designer A's design to add it to designer B's design. I apologize to Chris for that! I really do like the design on it's own and should've let you decide whether or not you felt the need to change it.
Moz, thanks for adding that font in your last submission. I am going to completely pass on that design though.
So far, I like Moz's and Jason's last submission with the jar and also some onlookers in the resale industry have me keeping Muvment's entry in the line up.
I just want EVERYONE to know that I am still COMPLETELY open to anything. I would really like to see a few more designers jump in. Just because I am favoring one at this time doesn't mean I cannot be swayed to like another design idea. Because of this and because I'm trying to remember this is a contest I am NOT going to end early. I will be anticipating more wonderful entries and continue to follow current ones. I hope all this doesn't run everyone off.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
In case you were interested in a stand alone icon, here is something I find the most challenging and fun, in terms of the design process. It's the word 'jar' designed in such a way as to work just the same when rotated 180 degreed. A.K.A an ambigram. :wee:
I can work on type treatments if you like this concept

Raja,
WOW! Quite a piece of work there. I just love how clever that was. However, I think that is a little much for me. Plus, you wouldn't want me to be liable for all the accidents down our main stretch due to people trying to figure it out. LOL! Also, as far as the words go, I'm trying to focus on "change" more so than the jar. I checked out your site, you have a great talent of turning names into images!
I don't really have any suggestions for it because I don't think it's headed in the right direction. Had I been in more of a technical or industrial type business it would've been perfect! :)
Jason,
Thanks for the revisions. My fav is #4. I'd like to see what it would look like in a royal blue color. Also, I think it might be cool to have the jar to the left with the "The" written (same position) on it. Jar still leaning though, even if you have to make part of the C black or white to stand out from the jar. Is that possible? If it's too much to ask I understand that too.
Thanks! Oh, and sorry about you almost waking up your son......LOL! Luckily my little ones are on the other end of the house or I might have done the same!

Hi again Jennifer.
Is that possible? If it's too much to ask I understand that too.
Anything is possible!!! ;)
Also,
Below the line I did a variation using both my idea with yours. I was trying to keep the "jar" empty so that for promo items you could use it on it's own and/or use the rest of the logo inside of it as I've shown (in this case blue won't work unless we change the color of the text also). Let me know what you think.

Definitely Warhol inspired. I LIKE it!!! Speaking of.......you have some great stuff on your site too.
Anyway, no changes now. You two are certainly going to make this a hard decision.

Alright, I'm gonna give this a shot. I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of entries that showed up today. Thanks for not throwing them at me at the last minute......I'd really be freaking out.
Jason, I'm actually glad you threw that last version in, #7. I think it is a strong possibility especially with the vision of the tag. Could I see what it looks like with the jar to the left on it and with royal blue where all the red is? Thanks!
Liz, I really like the setup but I'm not too sure about the jar. It looks a little skinny and kinda reminds me of a prescription bottle. You've got the right idea with the rest. I know it's probably hard because there isn't that much people can do with jars... :) If you have any other ideas I don't mind looking at them but I'm not too crazy about this one. Thanks for submitting though!
Beatz, this is great! I really like the different angle. Does the store come with the logo? ;) Would there be a way you could round the CJ logo a little, to look a little bit more like one. I can't say I'm too crazy about the colors but I don't have any color suggestions. Also, the font is kind of pointy (hope that makes sense). But I really do like the general idea. I'm thinking it may need to soak in a bit!
All these colors remind me of the Greatful Dead bears!
Folgelks, thanks for entering, I definitely see where you are going with your design but I don't think this is what I'm looking for. Also, I wouldn't have the first clue on any suggestions to make.
Moz, I like the t-shirt! I'm not getting a whole lot of comments about your design but I'm still really liking it even though I can't quite put my finger on it.
And last but not least, Arthouse.....I am really liking yours too. Could you give me an idea of how you would add color to it. Also the "change" font seems a bit too funky and the "the" and "jar" seems a bit stiff. Any other ideas for that? I love how you did the jar!
Okay, so my favs are, in no particular order.......
Moz's with and without color, Blackspot's #7, Beatz, and Arthouse's.
If anyone needs me to clarify anything or details I'll be checking in off and on to try and give you a quick answer. Thanks again everyone!

Hi Jennifer
Sorry I didn't have time to work on a revision today. I picked that font because I thought the style of the letters worked well with the line style of the jar. But if you don't particularly like the font, I can certainly try some others. And the same with color. The design can easily be converted to any color combination, so if you're not sure on the this color combo, I can try some others. About the only thing I think that's needed to make the design work well, in terms of color, is the use of a light grey or perhaps an rust color on the "coins", to make sure they don't come across as gumballs or something. I was even imaging that everything I made grey in the logo could be done in a shiny metalllic (maybe have your printing done on a metallic stock, with the grey colors left as negative space for the metallic to show through).
Anyway, I'll make up a few alternates with different colors and fonts as soon as I can. I might be able to get it done tonight, but if not, expect an update from me on Thursday afternoon.
thechangejar
04-14-2004, 07:56 PM
Thanks Tonya! I agree with you on the grey for the coins. The way you added those is very subtle and I like it. My only concerns with the teal are
1. I'm afraid teal is kind of a "trendy" color which might look dated years from now.
2. The strip I'm going to be in for the next few years has a Security Finance office with the main color being same.
It's no problem on the revisions. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't asked too much of a change. I definitely don't want to see the design compromised. That font does look great but it's not a fav. I do realize some of the other fonts that I really like wouldn't go along with the design very well so I don't have any suggestions.
Again thanks,
Jennifer

 Okay, here comes the dreaded narrow down.....
You guys should have the show American Designer.
Thanks again to everyone else who has worked so hard. This is such a tough decision to make, especially for an indecisive person.
Okay, the final two are...
Did I mention that I don't like to make decisions? :(
My choices are going to be.....
This doesn't mean the others weren't good.
In no particular order, the final two are Dynagirl and Moz.
There I did it. Now I can go get some sleep until I have to pick a final one......

I haven't worked on the font yet, but here are a few other color ideas. Right now I have to finish up my taxes (nothing like waiting until the last minute!), so I'll post some alternate font versions a little later. In the meantime (if you get a chance to see this) let me know if either of these colors grab you.

Tonya, thanks for showing it with different colors. I think the original color is the most flattering to the design. I'm in no hurry on the font change. For goodness sakes girl, get your taxes finished! :D

Awwww Moz....I think your logo is great as is. It has a lot of possibilities which is what I like about it. It's a totally different direction. Don't worry about the poll, I still can't decide which one. Never was one to follow popular opinion. :)
Tonya, I appreciate you using the other fonts. Believe it or not I like the original best. You must've planned it that way.... ;)
I'll be making a final decision on Sunday morning before I head off to church. I'm going to show it to lots of people and get their thoughts.

Okay, I know it's not Sunday morning but I've decided who wins now and I don't want to delay it for anyone.
First of all, (I know your thinking yada, yada, yada) but again I thank everyone so much for all the designs. They were all great! I'm gonna miss this in some ways and in other ways I'm not :) This site and the people here are very addictive. So much so I think my kids are beginning to only recognize me from the back....LOL! Well, not that bad but you all know what I mean...
The official winner of the contest is Dynagirl. Congratulations!
I love both the designs equally but I had to decide between need and want.
Had I already been an established business my decision may have been different.
Moz, your design was awesome! I think it has great possibilities but I guess I'm afraid to take the chance since I have alot riding on this. The look was great but I don't want to tie myself down to gimmicky (tags and all) until I become more established. Thanks for all the work!
Tonya, I chose your design because I believe it is more of what customers want to see. Hope that makes sense. While I like to do things different I think I better go with something safe to get myself off the ground. It is very "streamlined" ?, which will make me look more professional to draw people in.
Okay, off to revision land we go......

Cool :)
Let me know what you'd like done to the logo and I'll get to work on a revision. If you don't need anything done, then just let me know for sure which version you want to go with and what files you need. My standard logo package includes the Adobe Illustrator file (vector) in both .ai and .eps format, as well as some GIFs and JPEGs. That will cover you for printing and web uses, but I can provide most file formats if you need anything else.
Thanks

Tonya! You da Girl
Congratulations! We shall meet again ;)
