What is the best file format and resolution for logos/graphics that are being used in print and lots of media such as billboards, letterheads, etc? Thanks
Best source formats are vector file formats like ai, wmf, and eps. Vector graphics are saved using mathemetical data that describes how images should be drawn. This means that a logo can be redrawn at any size without losing any quality. Vector images can also be exported to popular bitmap image formats such as gif and jpg. (By contrast, bitmap or raster images are saved using exact pixel information - this pixel here is this color, this pixel here is this color. This method doesn't allow images to be scaled larger without losing significant quality; the program must "guess" at what form the new pixels needed to fill the larger image dimensions should take)
If you must use a bitmap format (png, gif, jpg) for your images, ensure that they are at least at 150 dpi quality for printing. 300dpi is even better. Dimensions can be measured in inches, and should be as large as you plan on printing at.
Keep in mind that anytime you print something from the computer, you will likely have color issues you need to address. Things rarely look the same printed out as they do when they're on the computer. A good designer will design your materials in CMYK color mode, and a good printer will work with you to do the proper color correction.
Hope this helps - liz.

Ok thanks, you had a lot of good useful information there. I know what vector graphics are and what not, i just wasn't sure about the exact specifications for turning vector logos made on the internet into quality print. By the way, I use fireworks which saves a .png so wouldn't that also be considered a vector graphic instead of bitmap? I believe they can be either one....
Thanks for the response!
