I am looking for a logo for my landscaping business. Briefly, I offer mowing, landscape installation (plants and hardscapes), mulch, clean up, and irrigation. Landscape installation comprises approximately 50% of my time, yet provides 80% of my revenue. Mowing helps defray my fixed costs. Most of my work is residential, and while I do limited aesthetic design work, large designs I subcontract, as I have neither the time nor the skill level required for a master plan (design degree; mine is in business). Irrigation design I do myself.

My company name is Dreamscaping, and what I have been using is "Landscape & Irrigation Installation and Maintenance"; I seek a logo that conveys a professional image. I don't think I want something that looks like a mowing company, because I do more. I will use the logo on a business card, on stationary, the side of my trailer, and perhaps a website. My first thought is two-color, for simplicity in not only cost but flexibility as well (I am not opposed to more color). However, I am flexible, and after seeing a few ideas will be able to provide better direction. I actually have a logo that I was going to use to have business cards printed tomorrow, but feedback from others directed me to your site. Here I am. I'm offering $75, but a short time limit, as I really need new cards soon; the deadline is April 15.

What about something like this?

Not bad, though I don't like the color. I want to convey a professional service image. As far as the logo, I don't think I want Landscape & Irrigation Installation and Maintenance directly tied to it. Besides, I place "Installation and Maintenance directly beneath "Landscape & Irrigation."

Not a bad start.

Do you have a slogan/tagline yet? I was thinking of something along the lines of 'Fuelling your imagination'

"Creating a Little Slice of Heaven in Your Garden"

Chelle: I don't think the capital "S" works, and though the design is interesting, it is not what I want.

I do want a simple design, though John's is a bit lacking. I do like JDesign's, but the graphics remnd me too much of the spiderman stuff all around my house (I have a young son).

This may seem strange, but I will post what I have already. I do like it, but the criticism I have heard is that the conifers lack originality. That's why I'm here.

Hopefully, after seeing more designs, I can help you narrow it down. Nothing is catching me so far.

Here is what I do have, but want to try something else.

In the abstract, I like the direction that J-design is taking, though I don't like the color; it seems too red.

As a side note, I do like many of the samples I see in the Stonehenge contest just posted.

Ondarox: I'd like something softer than that. Nice job though. I have to say, looking through the various contests, there are many talented people contributing design ideas.

An example of one I really like is in the Stonehenge contest: the "Bushwood" logo. I also like the direction J-design is headed.

Here's my first logo for your consideration. 2 colors, clean & professional.

What do you think of this kind of colour?

gpellicone
04-11-2003, 02:16 PM
Ondarox: I don't care for the box, though good try.

ElKootcho: A different direction than I imagined, but I like it. I like the way youe tied the "Landscape Irririgation Maintenance" in with it. I'd be interested in seeing what you could do to further develop it.

J-design: Not that color either. I was thinking "subtle elegance" though I obviously can't convey what I mean. It seems too loud.

To illustrate some features I do like, I'll paste one from the contest I mentioned earlier. It's subtle, soft, and clean. Then again, I also like what ElKootcho offered, as it a direction I considered.

I hope this helps.

Here's the logo that was designed (and not selected  ) for the Bushwoods contest with a couple of font options. Note that the center square is a different color that the original because I converted it to a 2-color logo. (The original is 3-color)

I like the font better on the right, but can't use that design; it belongs to someone else. I only used it as an example of one I do like.

ElKootcho is still the owner of this design as it was not chosen as the winner in the other competition. You can certainly consider using this logo as your own. :)

This design was entered in another contest but not selected as a winner and is therefore, mine to use as I wish. So, if you like it, you are more than free to select it.

Changed to a more dynamic shape. Aslo changed the colour...

This is getting hard. Any thought on how to tie these into a business card? I'm also planning on putting it on the side of my 16' enclosed trailer (I anticipate a vinyl sticker). this may help me decide.

Oh, the trailer is black. Sorry about not mentioning it earlier.

J-design: I like the change, but I think I'm leaning more towards Elkootcho's at this point. I think seeing it on a business card really helps, given the multiple uses for this logo.

Elkootcho: I really like the card layout on the left, but I'm not sure I want a green card (I'm thinking white or off-white). Also, this is going on a black trailer. Attached is a picture of one that is similar to mine (It's dark out so I found a picture on the web).

Hi, posting an entry to your contest, also included a stationary idea as well.
Thanks for your consideration!

Here's the logo on a white card. (Although, personally, I like the green one :P )

Here's a really quick rendition on the trailer.

Huhhso: Thanks for the submission. I like the overall scheme, though I don't like the font; actually I don't care for all caps. It is simple (like I asked, but is a bit stark). Thanks for the stationary suggestions. It REALLY helps (I'm a bit "challenged" when it comes to these things).

Elkootcho: I agree with you; the green card looks better than the white: It's growing on me. However, I think it clashes on a black background. That is not growing on me. Suggestions?

gpellicone

Elkootcho: I think it's the outer green border that clashes with the black.

Here it is again on the trailer. IMO, black goes with everything.

One thing to keep in mind when you view these entries (all entries, not just mine) is that your seeing them in RGB, the way computers show color. One thing that all designers are aware of is that everybody's computer screens render color differently and inaccurately. What I see on my screen is not what you see on your screen. The only way you should accept what you see on screen is if someone was designing a web logo for you. And even then you should view it on multiple computers before making your final color decisions.

When it comes to logos for print, this problem is even worse. Printers print in CMYK or Pantone. When I design this logo for you, I do so using Pantone colors. By the time I get it posted, the computer converts it to an RGB color which is not an accurate representation of the colors that will print on paper.

My suggestion, for whichever logo you ultimately select, go to your printer or signmaker and sit down with them to select the actual colors you want from a swatch book. You may like something you see on screen, but when you send it to be printed it WILL look different.

Because this is all done via computer, I can't simply show you a Pantone book and say "This is the color green you will get." We have to rely on computer moniters which are just, quite frankly, wrong. In terms of color, what I see on my screen is NOT the same as what you see on your screen.

Hope this helps (and doesn't just confuse. )

Quite informative (Clear as mud. I am a former knuckle-dragging infantry officer, so while I understand what you're saying, it will be confusing when I go to have it printed, in that I won't be able to say "Print this." Looks like I won't be going to OfficeMax.) I was nice and happy in my bubble thinking this was easy... Any other tweaking you can think of?

J-design: Can you change the type to lower-case "Dreamscaping"? Seeing the latest revision on a trailer helps alot. I'm comparing between you two, you have caught up in the final stretch.

I guess I'll be choosing tomorrow.

I have to agree with this, black is the shade that goes with every colour. :)

Oops! Didn't mean to make it too complicated. You could take a simpler (yet less accurate) approach: Take the final logo down to your local Kinkos (if you have these in your area. Are these things nationwide or just on every corner in Los Angeles?) and pay a few bucks to have it output from a color laser printer on high-quality paper. This will at least get you a fair idea of the color. Then you could get back to the winning designer and ask for a few color mods. i.e. darker, lighter, brighter green, whatever to make your final decision before you spring for the business cards, etc. Most of the designers here usually won't mind a few minor tweaks to get it right for you. (That, of course, is between you and the designer.)

It would be nice if you could just drop a disk off at your local quick printer and get your cards done, but the company is your baby and a few hurdles on your end will go a long way to getting it just right.

At any rate, I've resized the logo on the trailer. Smaller graphic, larger text. (pushing the Dreamscaping name more). I think it works better.

Well it's the 15th, and selection time. Thank you to all who have contributed ideas. I appreciate the time and effort you all put into these. This was a positive experience, and I will recommend this forum to anyone else that may be in my position. Thanks again.

The selection: Elkootcho's. What next?

Congrats ElKootcho! :notworthy: You'll have to make room on your avatar for another blue ribbon :D

Thanks gpellicone :) Here's the next step...

6) The last step is to contact the winning designer by private message or email to make arrangements for any minor revisions you need, then they will email the files you request from them.

Just let me know if you have any final changes and I'll get the logo sent over to you in several formats that should cover you for just about any usage situation you come across. You can either post it here or send me a PM or e-mail.
