Hello all,

I have done quite a few free sites for local charitys and some business! I have been asked to do a site for the Aberystwyth lions and I dont have time to work on a design, so I was hoping you guys could help me out.

The lions is a national charity in the UK, who carry out various fundraising events etc and give all the money they make during the year to charity. They are usually made up of local business men who all work together to fundraise for different local charitys.

Most areas have a branch and the local branch I am helping is the Aberysytwyh Lions

For more information on the lions club take a look at this page here (http://www.lions.org.uk) The main lions logo is on this page and can be used in the design somehow.

The Aberystwyth branch has a holding Page here (http://www.lions.aberystwyth.org/) with the logo again as well as the bi lingual Aberystwyth Logo (the black and white one). Not a great logo, so if you come up with something better thats great.

Aberystwyth is a seaside town and there are loads of photos available on the web. Any images can be taken from www.aberystwythlifeboat.org.uk but not a lot of local images on there.

As for design you are free to do more or less what you want, i will be building them a content management system, so they can keep members and the public updated with what they are doing and latest news.

The idea I had was maybe to include the castle a sunseting over the beach and castle/old college but the sun being the lions logo, just some ideas.

i look forward to seeing what you have to offer :)

Feel free to use photos from other sites, just let me know which ones and i will get permission if i use your design, most people locally will be pleased to help out.

Did you have a deadline? I'd love to help but am a bit swamped right now. I would need some time to get something put together for you.

Theres no deadline as such, I know all you guys are busy so if i leave it open till i see something I will. I also have to find time to work on the project, so im not rushed. A couple of weeks maybe would be realistic :)

I hope to see some good designs!

Most likely you'll just see one. Templates from design to conversion to html take hours to make. It's more of a who has the most time to get something in over who has the best entry.

Maybe someone might offer an old entry from another contest. I'm not sure. Most of those end up getting used for other projects.

So let me get this correct, is this for a header or a template? :help:

Palmer

It's for a template :)

Thanks  I'll see what I can come up with. Any thoughts on Navigation hotnuts21?

This is totally upto you in fact its a free pallette! Maybe you have some ideas youve been waiting to use or test out.

I dont think there will be many pages, im still waiting for them to give me all the info on what they want on the site. I would go with a pretty standard side navigation, that way if there are loads of pages i have scope to grow it.

It doesnt have to be a full html template, it can just be a graphical representation i can slice the image and transfer it to html, that should save you all a bit of time and make it easier for you all :)

I love the idea of this it works really well, but the photo doesnt say Aberystywth! I will have a look and see what i can find that does!

Also im not a fan of black sites, as a header that really works, but i think I will go for a white background on most of the site. Im toying with the idea of doing a sort off content management system so it will be quite modular if that makes sense. Similar to the e commerce site I am building.

Maybe put the nav in a box, i dont think it needs to take up all the page!!!

Here are some photos, i hope the links work :?

Mcdonalds pictures of Aber (http://www.mcdonaldsaberystwyth.co.uk/imagesofaberystwyth.html)
Some great photos on that last one,and Mcd's help out with the charitys quite a lot, so there shouldnt be any problem using them. Great photos!

No problem using these images at all! (http://www.abermarina.co.uk/Pages/welcome.html) I know the webmaster!

View from my window!!! (http://www.aberystwythlifeboat.org.uk/forum/index.php?&act=Attach&type=post&id=134)

That should be a help :)

Looks good :)

Any chance seeing it at full size, I was wondering what size screen has it been designed for? If that makes sense!

I like the design, but the more I have to take to the lions the better :) so if anyone else is thinking of having a go then feel free!!

I know theres no money available but there is my undieing appreciation which is worth more than money.......honest :)

It was made for 800x600 users, seeing as this is still the most commonly used resolution. The reason it looks so small is that it only has a little bit of news content in. If there was more it would expand down further. :)

I spoke to the lions bloke today who really liked both designs, but he did have a few thoughts. There are only going to be 6-8 categories, and they want a side bar nav!!

Also they want Aberystwyth Lions to be more prominent, maybe make the black area slightly longer and the text bigger??

Also the welsh logo has to be incorporated somewhere, you can see it on this page Lions placeholder (http://www.lions.aberystwyth.org) I thought you could incorporate it into the dark shadow of the castle on the left side of the header, as its only a black and white image, maybe "ghost" it into the castle or something. I dunno just an idea :)

Thanks for all your work so far!!

Here is something I have put together.

I found a really good site with lots of pictures and as you can see decided to incorporate a few of them to help show the area.

The image is a little big in file size at the moment but will be ok when sliced.

He has the files being fetched from his computer. He'll need to change the code to get them from the server.

Juvanescence

Sorry bout that. I had uploaded them. It must be a problem with the lycos server. It isnt what I would call reliable.

Your HTML is calling the files from a destination on your computer not the files in the folder on Lycos..

:D Ok guys sorry for the silence, have been really busy and things have just kept me away from the pc, not to mention my contact in the Lions has been crap at keeping me informed

Here is what Huw had to say on Demex design and Victorias.

"I like the simplicity of the first one (victorias) however I really like the montage of pics in the banner of the second (demex) as it shows more of what Aber has to offer and my eyes lingered on the page longer."

I give up trying to get straight answers, and so have got the opinion of others too. Its between the second one victoria did (sunset)and demex entry, however most people really liked the design by demex the only complaint was that there were too many pictures and it was a bit distracting, also the title doesnt stand out so well. Is there anyway to make the title more prominant? Even just that should help.

J-design. I have sent your design off to Huw and still havent heard back, i personally really liked this design and put it in contention along with the two mentioned above. My only critiscism is the text in the tile and nav seems quite pixelate (if thats the right word  ) Could you make it smoother. Also enlarge it slightly on the Nav.

I hope thats ok with everyone and thanks for entering.

Its freaky i have had more entries in this compo than i have the one im offering money for :D

Good work by all, again my appreciation is very great, I thing this has possible led to some paid work too that will of course be used here

Cheers, I forgot to mention in my last post could you move the title up so that is more in the sky as it blocks out a really old a rare building which is on the seafront. Sorry dont worry if you dont have time, I am still waiting to hear from Huw on his thoughts so you wait till i post them if you like!

Well I saw Huw today briefly as i was cleaning down the Lifeboat (http://www.aberystwythlifeboat.org.uk) after going out. He stopped past and I managed to grab a few minutes with him.

Basically I got the usual cryptic answers, out of all of them he really likes Demex design, but he also liked the simplicity of J design's and the nice colours and layout! As diplomatic as ever!!

So I have decided to make the decision myself instead of dragging this out!!

the winner is

wait for it

wait for it

Demex, providing she is happy to do a few adjustments we can talk about off board? If your ok with that let me know and pay her the money :rip: DOH wrong forum, sorry no money ;)
