We are changing the name of our dog training club from Port Chester Obedience Training club to Port Chester Dog Training Club because our training activities now include, in addition to Obedience, the fast-growing dog sport of Agility, the newest sport of Rally, and therapy dog training. Our current logo dates from the 1940s and is relevant to obedience only. The only thing we'd like to keep from that logo is our club's traditional color of red.
After successful completion of the logo contest, we will either work with the winner privately on a "business package" (if the winner does that sort of work), or do another contest for it.
We need a logo that can be more inclusive of the club's activities. What we are looking for is:
--A logo that can be sized up/down for use in letterhead, print ads, web site, signage for building and events, T-shirts, etc.
--Image/graphic plus type treatment
--Two-color, must adapt well to black and white as it will be used that way e.g. in print ads and in our newsletter. Second color (in addition to black) should be some version of red.
--Clean, professional look, not cutesie, not an illustration
--Graphic could use a dog, part of a dog, suggestion of a dog, pawprint, etc, but should be highly stylized and not recognizable as any particular breed. Note: One activity common to all the dog sports we train is jumping over a bar jump.
--Type should be sans-serif (e.g. Skia, Verdana, Comic Sans, Tahoma, etc.)
--Logo can be open or boxed.
Here's an example of a logo I like for its clean, stylized look: go to http://www.averillonline.com/portfolios/id.htm and scroll to the Sport & Wellness logo.
We would like files in PSD or Illustrator format plus TIFF and JPEG. Will need "print resolution" dpi, at least 300 dpi.
Here's a quick idea to get it started

Hi MOZ,
Land of the rising dogs! ;)
Comments:
--I like the clean look.
--Not sure about the barbell tips on the end of the lines....
--How would this work in B & W?
--The dog is stylized all right, but looks, well, a bit deformed. :o My initial reaction was to think "what kind of dog is that?" which we don't want.
Maybe make the dog even more stylized? Think the AOL runner guy or a fattened stick figure.
Thanks!

Hi Julie,
Very nice! :flowers: And will work equally well in B & W, important for a nonprofit that advertises mostly in B & W publications.
"Stylizing" (or really abstracting is probably the right word) is the way to go! The head and tail work pretty well. I'm not so sure about the semi-circle for the body and legs. Might read better if legs were separate "pieces" from the body -- or maybe if head were smaller in proportion to body? The large head tends to read as "puppy" which is not the intent. Would like to see some variations on the dog shape.
The club's old (current) logo includes a triangle, which is neither here nor there, but it may appeal to old-timers as a link to tradition.
Thanks!

Interesting--that triangle was something my partner mentioned when we were brainstorming for this. I'll have to mention it to him!
I've changed to body and given you a few choices (see the doggies down at the bottom). The head is smaller than before...does this seem right to you?

Sorry all for not responding promptly. Been down with a flu-like thing. Anyway, back to the land of the living!
Julie -- I like the dog with smaller head much better. I think I like the one you've shown large, but for better comparison could you also provide a large version of the semicircle dog? (the one on the left) Would also be interested to see dog and triangle sized so that only one part of dog (such as the ear) "breaks out" of the triangle.
Jason -- Like the feeling of your logo and the way it reverses nicely, but the dog is *so* abstract that I'm not sure whether I'm seeing part of dog's head with a floppy ear? Or entire dog -- if so, is the curly side the head or tail? Can you tweak to get just a little less abstract/closer to recognizable as dog?
Paula -- Although dogs do get ribbons in sports trials as well as at conformation shows, the posed dog with ribbon reads more like a kennel club that dedicated to conformation ("beauty contests"), which our club does not do. To make the ribbon concept work, you'd need to put some action on that dog. Also, I'm reading it pretty clearly as an Airedale/terrier; can you go a bit more generic?
Taldo -- Nice entry, the tilted star says motion to me.... I think the words "Port Chester" need to be more prominent. There are many dog training clubs in the world.... when people refer to *our* club, they're likely to abbreviate it as "Port Chester" or PCDTC.
Thanks all! This is coming along nicely. :flowers:
I'm off soon to Canada to ... what else, pick up a new puppy. I will try to check in late tonight and tomorrow morning, otherwise will be on the road until Monday night.

Here are my revisions...to keep the one that only has his head sticking out of the triangle more balanced, I added in some shapes to indicate motion.

I was a full dog (sorta ;) ). I turned the "P" upside down to more resemble the dog's head, fixed the "C" body and legs and turned up the tail.

Oops, I didn't mean to hit send so soon! :o
Julie, I think dog #3 is the most successful. I like the lettering for Dog Training Club on that one, too, but will it hold up at business card size?
Jason, yea, I think I can see the dog now! Can the dog be in motion?
Bogglins, nice concept. Don't know if the red "fade" is going to translate well in the newsprint-type publications we advertise in -- can you do it with solid colors only!
Taldo, thanks for putting more emphasis on Port Chester. I have to admit that visually, I like the first iteration although it didn't work as far as proper emphasis on the words. I'm not sure exactly what to tell you except play a bit with relationship of the two lines of text to the star and to each other.
Thanks all!

My fingers aren't working well today!
Sparkie, the type treatment is nice, with paw in the "o". But I don't like the dog begging -- that's not something we teach! Can you revise dog image so he's doing something more like a performance dog would do?
Thanks,

Changed it a bit to make it more like a show stance but also looks a bit like jumping. Also I changed the fonts.

Hi Jane,
Thank you for your feedback, its very helpful! I do have one question though, since I don't know a whole lot about dog training:
What exactly would a "performance dog" be doing? Fetching a frisbee? Or something else?
Let me know what you had in mind.
Many thanks!

Hi Sherice,
By "performance dog" I meant one that competes in organized dog sports. For our purposes, those would be agility, obedience, and rally. You've probably seen agility dogs on TV, blazing through jumps, tunnels, weave poles, dog walks, teeters, etc. It's a very athletic sport. In obedience, dogs heel, retrieve dumbbells on the flat or over a jump, do a broad jump and a bar jump, among a group of dumbbell-like articles find the one with the owner's scent, retrieve one glove (out of three) as directed, and so on. Rally is short for rally obedience -- like agility, you "run" a course, but there are stations with instructions....
Hope this helps!

Wow, this contest is really moving along!
Paula, the new "ribbon" treatments work much better. I like the one with the jumping dog better. But I'm also interested in the new image with the dog jumping through the "O" -- can you show how it would work in B & W, and smaller as on business card?
Julie, looks good!
Bogglins, thanks! I did like the fade, just don't think it's practical for us.
Jason and others: FYI, showing logo in different colors is cool, but we won't be choosing the winner based on the colors. There may be a strong feeling about keeping the club's present red color, or something like it, though I hope we'll have more leeway. What I'm looking for is that the logos look good in two colors and B & W. Then we'll negotiate with winner over colors.
Thanks all!

I wasn't going to post this because I wasn't happy with the legs but if you like the concept I can work on the legs bit more. Also, since color isn't a factor right now, I left it all black.

Hi Jason,
The style of illustration is nice, but the dog needs to look like it is "doing" something. I suppose we could say he's doing a sit-stay, but a bit more action needed.

Hi everyone,
We got some bad news Friday night -- for technical reasons that I won't go into, we cannot change our name! We can, however, proceed with a new logo. But we need the name to be 'Port Chester OBEDIENCE Training Club" rather than "Port Chester DOG Training Club." That will probably affect many of the designs because of the increase in length of the text.
To compensate for not being able to use the more inclusive "dog training" name, we will want to add a tag line. Something like "Basics, Agility, Obedience, Rally & More!" I hope to get that settled soon. The tag should be "detachable" in the sense that it can be included or not, as the situation calls for.
Sorry all for this change.

Hi Bogglins, thanks for updated (retro-dated?) name change
Hi Julie, may I suggest an alternate way of handling the tag line for your entry? Instead of using the bar under the triangle, add the tag line underneath "Obedience Training Club" as text using the font you used for Dog Training Club in your June 15 version.
Hi Just G, The "Cheshire Dog" version is neat! The sitting dog image is a bit too inactive for what we want.
Thanks all! :)

Paula23 -- the dog with hoops is funny, but maybe not as rep of what we do as we'd like. Still prefer the other design. At one point you had the dog jumping through the "O" -- can you do a variant like that again?
Just G -- OK, the paw-raised dog works!
Anyone else, please get final entries in....

Thank you all for some very nice work! The contest winner is MARK BEAUDRY.
Mark, the revisions needed are:
1. Change color to red. I would suggest a web-safe red, not fully saturated, such as CC0000 (R 204, G0, B0)
(Hey, I like the teal, but the club is so invested in red as its color that we need to go with it.)
2. Add a tagline: "Agility, Obedience, Rally & More!"
