View Full Version : Surfing Starfish T-Shirt Design - $200 *Project Over*
(Admin code added by Michael - 19358867)
Hi everyone,
We are looking for a light-hearted t-shirt design to give out to some of our like-minded customers and for our own personal use.
I have in my mind a starfish riding a surfboard and holding a tropical drink in one appendage. Try and give the starfish a mischevious look or some personality. This is the basic premise in a nutshell. Feel free to experiment with any other suitable sea creature if needed. We would also like to try to work in an image or replication of a Gehl skid loader if this is at all possible. Just how, I'm not quite sure.
You will also need to work in our company name "Hayden Landscaping" in a suitable light-hearted font.
The design will be reproduced on white t-shirts so about any color should work.
Try and have fun with it. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Contest will end at midnite on the 13th. Feel free to ask any questions if you need more info.
Thanks.
Rick

Haven't worked in the text yet, but I thought I'd see if you liked the general direction first...

Rick,
a couple of questions for you:
1. What kind of print media will you be using for this t-shirt: Spot color silkscreen? Transfer? Process color silkscreen? Something else?
2. What color will your t-shirts be? Will it be one color only or various t-shirts of different colors?
Thanks :)

another version, let me know what you think,
thanks and enjoy,
amanda
Michael/Alex/Amanda: Sorry for the delay in posting feedback. I'll respond in the order received.
Michael: You are heading in the right direction. I would like the starfish appendages to come to more of a point rather than being rounded. Would also like it to be a more vibrant color and have the wave roll up from behind if possible. Hope this helps.
Alex: I was figuring on a simple transfer but would like to hear- from a designer's view point- your opinion on which process would produce the best image. The shirts themselves will be white with heather gray an option.
Amanda: Like the background images and the font style. Unfortunately, the starfish doesn't quite convince me. May be a bit too human in appearance. Might try for something a little more vibrant for the starfish color.
Thanks for the submissions so far. Look forward to seeing what else might come in.

better?
Amanda,
Thanks for the new submission. I think the starfish still looks a little too human.
I appreciate your efforts thus far.
Maybe "cartoonish" would be an adequate way to describe the type of starfish I am envisioning. Pointy appendages, large round eyes, big cheesy smile, maybe some funky eyebrows to give it some expression. Maybe its overall color should be bright green or perhaps red or purple. Something that would stand out well on a white t-shirt. I hope this helps.
Thanks.

Hi Paula. Welcome aboard.
I like the colorful background from post #1.
The starfish seems to stand out better in post #2. I also like the font style and placement at the bottom of the design from post #2.
Any way to find a happy median between the two without messing everything up?
Your opinion would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Rick

Thanks for the reply, Rick.
If you're printing on other color than white, you'll probably be needing a white mask underptinted (in case of silkscreen print) or masked transfer sheets (a "normal" transfer with white mask below the art), so you might want to check out the prices with your printers, cause the white in silkscreen is an extra color, though frankly I don't know whether it will cost you something extra in case you print transfers.
As for the media to choose, if you have a good silscreen printer, they can give you a good halftone quality. I don't have much experience with transfers, but on thing's for sure: if you do it with the Epson (or whatever else mark) transfer sheets for desktop printers - the quality most probably will be awful and it costs half a fortune :) It's better to find a pros that can make the real transfer with the appropriate tints.
I'd really suggest you check with your printer what format do they accept and what are their limitations as to colors and color gradations, for we may come up with whatever "cool" designs here, but it all depends on your printer whether they can be printed or not. They might as well not print at all
Cheers :)

hey rick,
thanks for the feedback... :) adjusted below...
Thanks for the revisions, input, and new entries.
Chocolate,
Not quite what I'm after. Facial expression reminds me a little too much of Sponge Bob. Would welcome another entry if you care to take another shot at it.
Alex,
Thanks for the input. Printer recommended silkscreen. Say they can print anything- for the right price!! So I will now say I'm going with silkscreen.
Paula,
Clothing is a nice touch. I won't ask you to make any more changes for the time being.
Amanda,
Looks much better. As with Paula's design I won't ask for any more changes just yet.
If anyone else has an idea to submit, feel free to do so!!
Thanks all.
Rick
Paula,
Can you change the color of the board in version 2 from your last post so that it doesn't blend into the background?
Thanks.
Rick
Amanda,
Can you change the trunks on the starfish from your last post from a solid color to a multi-color? Maybe a tropical floral print for example.
Thanks.
Rick

Here are a couple of color variations for the board. I darkened up the letters a bit on the bottom logo as well. I think it makes it pop a little more.
Thanks,Paula

Hello Rick,
Here's my entry. Please let me know what you think. B)
Thanks,

Michael,
I might ask to see the board in a contrasting color from the starfish. Or vice versa.
Thanks.
Alexander,
Nice original concept. I would ask to see the company name in a solid color rather than having the flecks of white showing thru. I couldn't quite tell if this was intentional or just my monitor.
Thanks.
