View Full Version : Design Outpost v2 Bug Reporting (Edited Title)
Michael
07-15-2004, 12:11 AM
As you all can see we have upgraded the look of Design Outpost and also moved over to a new forum.
I'm creating this thread so as you can report any problems or bugs you may encounter.
For starters those of you who used the avatar resizing feature on the old forum will have to manually resize them (75x75px Max)
Thanks all
Bug: New avatars arent being saved

For those of you who have posted images in contests and are now seeing coding in it's place, you will have to edit this coding to enable the image to show.
Click on edit within your post and make sure that the img tag looks like this (minus the *)
[*img]http://www.yourdomain.com/yourimage.gif[/img]
Thanks all, any problems give us a shout :)

isn`t it possible to change the links automatically to make images visible again. It would really hard to go through all older posts to fix it . It is important because clients very often view older posts, to make sure what they are looking for, or just to check how good we are ... i am sure it could be done with a bit of programming :)
the other thing is that when writing the reply , the box to type text in , is too small ( was bigger earlier ) and is quite annoying. There is still some place left to make it wider ....
Also, there is one really important thing missing! The button, which transfers to the forums. Now it is " watch us work" , and is neither quite understandable, nor enough empasized. It is much more important than "home " button. For those who come here for the first time it must be right after the logo ....

P.

It's a s big as it's going to get. In lower resolutions it produces a horizontal scroll.

In v1, I was able to see image attachments from the designers to see what they were doing during the contest. Currently I cannot view image attachments because I do not have the correct permissions. Is this intended?
I would hope that I can view the competitions, as I imagine that is what the "Watch Us Work" button is describing.

Palmer just to let you know that the way mambo works, whatever is at the top of the menu tree (in this case the home component) then that is what appears on the front page. Not sure what would happen though if you put forums at the top, as they are not a full component, it might just goto and read the next full component?
Maybe you can hide the home link for the index page? But still have it at the top for the tree.

It seems that I can't view other members profiles

Yes I just noticed this too.
The buttons, Profile, Posts, add to buddys, PM etc all goto M johanson, no matter whos you click. The WWW button seems to work fine though.

I moved the "Forum Home" button to the far left of the button bar. Hopefully that will help.
Palmer,
Would it be more beneficial if the Forum Home button was visible on the Home Page? Currently you have to go into the forums, before the button becomes visible. I think the previous discussion has been about making sure people that come to the home page are aware of how to get to the forums, so they should have some visible "Forums" button so they don't have to guess where they are going.
When I first came to the new design, I had to think about where the forums were. I didn't sit here for 10 minutes, but for someone that hasn't been here before they might not understand the Watch Us Work button.

Hi all,
it is looking great although the forum colors are not that clear (between reply and answer that is etc.) but that can be my eyes .
One thing I encountered, but I am on an iMac: when I entered the forums and used the Back browser button of my browser (safari that is for this moment) I went back the 'old' DO layout but with very astonishing colours (yellow, brownish, grey) ??
regards,
MJ

Small moans, but they mean a lot to me... :)
1. Forum view with recommended image width (580 pixels) now no longer fits an 800x600 screen.
2. Can we have the Alt+0160 keystroke show as a blank space rather than an underscore?
_http://www.eagleimagery.co.uk/smil3y/eaglehmmm.gif
3. View members' 'last click' - can we get this reinstated?
4. Could we increase Avatar size limit to 100x100? (We have the space and we're talking fractions of a kb here!) :)
5. Could we reinstate 'view new posts' at the top of each forum view (not just Forum Home)?
6. "Script Prompts" when completing posts..... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrgghhhh, they're so lame! http://www.eagleimagery.co.uk/smil3y/eagleyuk.gif
7. No 'Preview Reply' option on PMs
Cheers! :D

I am noticing that some of the prize amounts for some of the contests have disappeared. It would be helpful for the Apprentices to see the amount....???
Also is there an icon that will appear once the contest has been won?

That's because everyone hasn't edited their image code yet. The code got messed up in the transfer so everyone who has hosted images (using image tags instead of attaching) has to edit their posts.

The links in the 2 "Important" Topics at the top of the Logos don't work (they're links for posting Guidelines and Designer's Application).

Posting Box in Firefox (and probably Mozilla, Netscape, Opera and Safari) is too small. It needs to be made wider in order to provide an adequate message area.
Styles -> (your style) -> Fonts/Colors/Etc... -> Near the Bottom.

Internet Explorer 4+ - 70
Netscape Navigator 4.x - 50
Netscape Navigator 6.0 - 40

We've been discussing using vBulletin for months, where have you been? Were you not there when we tested the site too? :) I can't edit thread titles either. Obviously we need that option added. Most of what you are asking would require special hacks. Mike will need to do those because I have no idea how to.

Or an upgrade to 3.0. ;)
For editing thread titles, there should be a dropdown at the bottom of the screen for staff members. Simply choose "Edit Thread" off that dropdown. If it isn't there then someone stuffed up the templates.
To Edit Posts, click on "Edit" in the post itself.

Just a note to say I have changed the opacity of the "read" icons to make a more obvious distinction between threads that are old and new.
I've also increased the time in where a post is considered read or not. It used to be if you didn't read a post within 15 minutes the forum considered it read, now it is increased to 30 minutes.
Some logo projects were getting pushed to page 2 so I increased the number of threads to display so that didn't happen.
I also changed the configuration to show all posts from the past year instead of the past 30 days. Forums with less activity like the testimonials forum were showing no posts.
We believe we have the log in problems fixed and we are working on the other bugs.
Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, thanks for your suggestions :)

In stead of fixing all these problems why not just upgrade to vBulletin 3.0 now? All these problems will most likely go away.
I've been running 3.0 for a while now on Contractortalk.com, diychatroom.com, and inctalk.com and its easier to use and much more stable.
You will have to update your templates once you do upgrade and your front page CMS might not interact with Version 3 but that doesnt' seem to be working for me anyways!
Updating the template shouldn't take more than an hour or two. All these bug fixes are taking longer than that.
Sorry, not trying to sound like a know it all but I LOVE this board and it seems like your tring to reinvent the wheel by fixing all these problems when 3.0 is out.
thx...

That's the conclusion we've come to as well. When we first bought vBulletin, at the time 2.3.4 was the only stable version available, now that 3.0 is stable we are going to upgrade to that. We just need to set it up and test it first.

Great... Sorry if that was stated earlier... I didn't read the whole thread.
Let me know if you need anything! :D

I've just noticed that some of the longer forum descriptions get cut off. :(

Yep, there's a limit to how long they can be. I'll work on that.

Due to the inability to track down the cause of the bugs we are experiencing, we have decided to upgrade to vBulletin 3. We hope this will enhance the usability and function of our forum.
There may be a little bit of downtime while we upgrade. We will make an announcement when we know when the upgrade will occur.
Certain modification suggestions mentioned in this thread will no longer apply when we upgrade, so we may or may not do them.

GREAT DECISION!
I know I'm just a lowly client but I'm still addicted to this board!
One suggestion. When you upgrade to vBulletin 3 make sure you turn on the WYSIWYG interface for posts. It makes posting much easier.
thx.

Will do. I also plan on having Mike do quite a few hacks to the forum too.
Stay tuned...

Palmer... one quick warning about hacks.
When vBulletin creates bug fixes and goes from vs.3.03 to vs.3.04 they will release simple upgrade scripts.
Some of the hacks out there will automatically upgrade with vBulletin and some require you to rehack the board. This is VERY time consuming.
Just may be something to consider... I installed an arcade on my contractor board and it takes me about an hour to hack it. Every time vBulletin releases an update it becomes a big deal. With my other boards I just run the script and I'm done.
I'm sure Mike knows far more than I do on this subject but I just wanted to throw it out there. THANKS!

Thanks for the warning. :) I'll let Mike know.

I just discovered that if you click on my profile button, it leads to someone else's profile.
EDIT: Actually, if you click on anyone's "Profile", "PM", or "Find All" buttons it leads to Markymoo!

The fix is somewhere in this thread, I believe you have to clear your cache and internet temp files :)

Thanks. Clearing the cache did the trick.

Just to add to the misery, im getting the same error i had when you first switched over.
If i click on the profile or pm, or email button of anyone under their posts, and I mean anyone, then I always get M Johanson come up as the person im trying to look at.
Only I get someone called 'blackbirdsingsloud'! Doesn't matter if I search the members area or click on persons name within the priviate client forum.
Tried closing out the browser and logging back in - didn't work. I guess I'll try again.

You need to close the browser for at least 10 minutes or restart the computer. It has something to do with the temporary cache of the browser storing the wrong information. You can also open a different browser (like Netscape) and use that if you're in a hurry.
The good news is that when testing vBulletin 3, this problem goes away. We hope to upgrade to that version of the forum software within a week depending on how busy Mike is.
Can't change password.
Error: Wrong Password. Try again.

I, along with others, have had problems accessing member's profiles (ie - keep getting sent to 'blackbirdsingsloud' profile). I have tried clearning out everything (history, cache, passwords, etc) in Firefox 0.9.3, shut down the computer for 10 minutes, rebooted, and still I get sent to the same profile every time.
I cleared out temp. internet files in Explorer and that did the trick for me. Anyone else using Firefox who is also having trouble rectifying this situation?
Please don't make me go back to IE..... :weep:

Do you shut down your computer every day?

No, I don't . Why do you ask?

Because I shut down my computer every night and the problem is fixed the next day. It stays fixed most of the time and only occasionally goes back to the bug. The next day the bug is gone when I start up the computer.

The good news is this should resolve itself when we switch to vBulletin 3, at least early indications during testing show that the bug will be gone.
I'm just waiting for Mike to have the time to work on upgrading the forum. He hopes to work on it this weekend.

Here is something strange I get - on both my computers.
While on DO, any page that loads, it tells me it is , "Done, but with errors on page."
What does that mean?

Its nothing to worry about, its just there are a few minor javascript errors within the HTML which causes this. Its nothing to worry about though.
