I'm new to all this, so please bear with me. I just sent payment via paypal and have not received a confirmation, but, I guess that might take an hour or two.
I am looking for a bold/attention grabbing, yet elegant logo for my website. I'm in the designer fragrance/perfume industry. Please take a look at the website, although a completely different color scheme would be completely acceptable. I am not stuck on any one color, so, feel free to explore your artistic limits.
If there is any other information required, I woul encourage you to ask, because, as stated earlier, I don't quite know what information is needed from me.
Thanks,
Melissa Ares

By the way, guys and gals, if you feel that bolder and/or funnier is the way to go....moreso than elegant/sophisticated, I would love to see it, as I'm pretty well open to just about anything and the more ideas the better. A couple of points that I want to touch on. The slogan/tagline is completely up in the air. The four that I have considered are as follows, however, as with the design, I'm COMPLETELY OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS:
1) Where the finest in luxury always costs less
2) Where luxury costs less
3) Where luxury meets affordability
4) Where the nose knows (in case we went the funny route...even though it's not that funny, really)
You guys/gals are the ones with the creativity, so, if you think of anything and wish to throw it my way and include it in a logo concept, by all means.
I also wanted to indicate that, once the logo is complete, I will be using you guys/gals for the header to my website. On that note, I wanted to ask...does the header to the website, if you were to design it, include the navigation? In other words, the buttons...etc?
Let me know, everyone.

Hello Melissa,
Here's my idea - letters "U" and "P" in a shape of a perfume bottle. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,

Some early comments:
Bill: I like the initial concept, with the bright three-color motif. Would like to see some different thoughts, with regards to fonts, and the like, with some of the same ideas behind it. Would also love to see some other unique ideas from you, as I love your work, from what I've seen on here the week or so that I looked at all you guys before I jumped on board.
Samoyloff: I love your work as well. In fact, I'm going to find myself saying that alot, because, frankly, you guys are ALL amazing, and, some of the best ideas I've seen have come from these message boards. Having said that, I don't particularly love this idea for a couple of reasons. Not attention grabbing enough. And, while I love the thought of the "UP" in the perfume bottle, it really isn't very clear that this is a perfume bottle, and, it isn't very clear that there are the letters "UP" in the bottle. Again, I LOVE your work, just am not in love with this particular idea, but, would LOVE to see some other ideas from you.
Hope this helps, everyone, and, I hope to see alot more ideas from the rest of you.

Is there anyone else working on something, or planning to enter the contest? I love ALL you guys and the more ideas I see the better.
Also looking for someone to design either a template or a header for my website, once the logo work is completed.
Come on everyone...let me have it.

Melissa,
I love the UP idea myself, and I would really like to continue working in this direction, if you don't mind me asking - do you really like it? I can make the "up" and the bottle more obvious, more "pronounced", just request revisions and I'll do it, that's why I'm here. :D OK, here's further development of the UP idea. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Alexander.

Ok, finally got something to stick...
Also working with the "U" "P" (since I always seem to do that ;) ) but in a much more abstract way. :D
jcambert
07-28-2004, 07:14 AM
Alexander: I do really DO like the idea of the "U" and the "P", and, this revision I like much more than the first idea. I would still like to see a slightly clearer version of each letter, although I am not quite sure how we can do this. Let me know if I'm being too picky.
Jason: I'd like to see something a bit bolder, with a slightly more brandable graphic/logo, if at all possible.

Hi Melissa,
By "bolder" and "brandable" do you mean something more illustrative? I ask because anything is "brandable" so I'm not real sure of a direction.
Thanks :D

By "bolder" I mean something more attention grabbing, and, by "brandable" I mean something more graphic...yes, more "mine" so to speak. Hope this helps. Whenever I don't make myself clear, please say so, as I'm new to this and I know that sometimes I might not get through what I want, exactly.

Alexander, here's an idea. Don't know if it will work, but, it's worth a shot. How about a perfume bottle that looks like a "U" and, the outbranching of the atomizer forming the "P" In case you don't know what I mean, I'm talking about a perfume bottle that has a little string attached, looks something like the following picture.

Here's a thought for everyone. What if we were to go the less refined/elegant route and draw up some sort of character/caricature of a woman spraying perfume, or something along those lines?
Not necesarily a GREAT idea, but something to think about and throw out there.

Melissa,
Here's the logo. I think it's even more vague. And, I think it's not modern enough. Who uses those atomisers nowdays? I remember my grandpa did, but I haven't seen them for a LONG while. :)
Let me express my opinion.. I do appreciate your quick feedback and ideas, however I think with the character/caricature it will go in a completely wrong direction. If you sell luxury, you should stay in the luxury world. And don't be afraid to be a little vague with your logo, as too straightforward logos are good for hardware stores, but look at some logos from the luxury world, you'll see what I mean. My opinion is that your business needs a strong elegant icon, something sophisticated yet perfume-related.
Alexander.

Much more clearly defined U and P. Can we play with the fonts and color some? I'd like as many different options as possible.
How come nobody else is jumping in here? Should I have gone to $200? Although I will say that I can imagine that designing a logo for perfumes isn't nearly as much fun as some of the other companies on here. I got a real kick out of some of the logo concepts that were presented for Hosss's barbecue for example. That was great work.

jcambert
07-28-2004, 11:43 AM

Is the fact that I didn't set a deadline the reason that not too many of you have responded? I'm not in a terrible rush, because I want you to take your time if that's what it is going to take to get it done right, but, I do want this done as soon as possible, as my site is fully functional and receiving 300+unique visitors per day.

I just noticed that most of these deadlines are set at about two weeks from the start of the project. Is mine being set one week after start too soon, normally? What is the standard or usual time frame? Is one week too little time to get something good/high quality done?

Thanks for the work. I was starting to get worried a little.
first concept: Can we work on that font some? I like that it's very unique looking, but, it's a little tough to make out.
second concept: would also like to see some variations on the font and color schemes. Don't be afraid to go with multiple colors, ala Bill.
third: don't know if it's uniqueness is enough for me..
Also, the atomizer was really just an idea, but, not at all a requirement. Did you have any other ideas that didn't involve the atomizer?

hi everyone, here is my entry
Yannick
jcambert
07-29-2004, 05:06 AM
Paula:
#1: I like this, but, how well do you think this would translate to, say a business card?
#2: I had actually thought about suggesting that someone try putting the name inside a perfume bottle, and, I really like the idea. I would, however, like some modifications and simplifications to the interior of the bottle. Looks a bit too cluttered for me. I like the spray that is coming out of the top of the bottle. Could we possibly darken it very, very slightly? Don't want it to appear TOO prominently, but, a very, very, very slight darkening might be nice. I might also like to see a variation in font and color, as it looks a bit old fashioned/outdated, but, as I said, I like the idea.
#3: Love the two different fonts. Like the color scheme and shadow idea. Don't care too much for the actual perfume bottle. Can we work on that? Can we also try putting the letters "U" and "P" into the perfume bottle somehow, to appear to be part of the liquid? Even it it appears obscure.
Samoyloff: I really like your ideas. More on this later.
Yannick/Hypnosis: Gorgeous, elegant, however, it might be a bit too big (the actual graphic), for purposes of translating well to, say, a business card. Would also like to see a bit more attention grabbing color scheme. The font is nice...elegant, and, the circley motiff also adds to the elegance, so, maybe we can spruce up the color scheme a bit?
I love you all. You are more talented than any of what I have seen searching the web. I'm glad I decided to go with you guys. Please keep em coming.
Melissa.

I like this one better...alot better, actually. Is there any way that we can work on somehow getting a "UP" kind of swirl into the liquid of the perfume bottle? and, can you show me what this might look like on a business card? I don't know if it's too complex/big, to scale well to business card size.

Hypnosis. I like this last design the best of your submissions so far. Excellent work.
Paula: LIke the revisions, although I would still like to see what you come up with later as to the fonts. On the second design, I'm still not convinced. As stated earlier, I love the idea, but, for some reason, the little designs that are inside the actual bottle just look outdated/old fashioned to me. Again, I love the idea, but, can we play around with colors and with the design INSIDE the bottle? I like the bottle and the spray concept, but, the interior of the bottle (design and color), don't yet have me convinced.

Let me know if this helps. I sell high end designer fragrances, however, I have a very, very low price point. I have probably the best prices out there, period. I have competition, in terms of pricing, from two or three other online merchants, however, all in all, my prices are the lowest, so, there is a combination of high end luxury fragrance items, at the lowest prices possible.

Melissa,
I think I know why they like it the most. And, I've already said about that - in the luxury business most logos are quite vague and abstract, still unique and elegant. And that's why people imagine something like my #1, when they think of a luxury biz logo. The other logos I created are more straightforward than #1. However, it must be completely your decision what logo to use, I would not ask other people unless they are your potential customers.
Alexander.

Anybody else wanna contribute any original thoughts? The deadline on this one is rapidly approaching.
By the way, do all of you that have entered already also design templates? The reason that I ask is, as I mentioned earlier, once the logo is set, I will be starting a new contest for a one page website template. I may consider making it $500, so as to hopefully bring out the very best in you guys/gals.
I'd be curious to know which of you actually do that as well. The reason I ask is that I know the template contests do NOT get a very good turn out. And, if I can't get a good turnout, I may end up just not doing one and hiring out the work elsewhere.

Wow. You guys work very well, and very fast.
On the first ones (red ones and green ones), if you don't mind, you can remove the squigly lines coming out of the spray and leave the shadow that you had put in there before. Also, can you make the "UP" inside the bottle slightly clearer? Maybe I won't like it slightly clearer (as Samoyloff point out, vague is sometimes good), but, I would like to see how it looks. It doesn't have to be very, very clear, but, something SLIGHTLY cleaner/clearer.

Taldo, I like the simplicity of the original design...what I didn't like too much was the actual look of the perfume bottle. So, I would prefer that you revert to the other design's simplicity but kinda work on the shape of the bottle (doesn't really look too much like a perfume bottle).

Also forgot to mentino that I prefer the original though with the "." as opposed to the flower you used here.

Taldo, this bottle is MUCH better. Now, let's use this bottle, and revert the rest of the items, including color, font, and the little squigly line above the "." back to the SECOND overall idea that you submitted, on page three of this thread. Let me see how that looks.

By the way, do all of you that have entered already also design templates?
Some of the designers are active in both logo design and web design but for the most part we all have our own "specialties". We have an excellent group of web designers that will be ready to take part once you have your logo settled.

How come, though, the template contests are SO MUCH LESS active than these logo ones? You don't get anywhere NEAR the number of entires.

Paula, is there any way you can play with the fonts a bit? I like the last concept you provided (Red), but, maybe with the font that you used for the one directly above it. Also, can we see how it would look if the perfume bottle were used as the "dot" after "perfumes" and before "com"?
In other words:
UnlimitedPerfumes (bottle) com

Does anyone else intend to enter this contest? If the answer is "no" then there is no sense in wasting anyone's time, and, I will make my decision before Wednesday's deadline. If you intend to enter, please simply say so, so that I know to hold off. I know there are at least 10 of you out there who have not entered. I would love to see you enter, or, at the very least, let me know that you intend to enter but are not yet ready to. Please let me know one way or the other, so that, if nobody else intends to enter, I can make my decision earlier than the deadline.
Thank you all a ton.

That would be a question for the template designers but I'd guess that it's probably a time factor. Some of our logo designers can really crank out the logos pretty quickly while template design can be a rather time consuming process. If a template designer spends 4-6 hours (or more) on an entry and doesn't win, that's a pretty big chunk of time they are not being compensated for. And that would be for just one single template.
The web designers that enter 2 or 3 designs in a single project are often spending A LOT of time. And then if their design is chosen there is sometimes a lot more time involved in revisions, slicing and coding.
As I said, the template designers could probably shed a bit more light on the subject but that's the general impression that I've gleaned over the past year and half that I've been involved with DO.

Julie: First off, thanks for entering. I absolutely love the slogan idea you came up with in your second idea, as well as making the "UN" caps. Brilliant. I don't like either perfume bottle, though, too much. If I had to go with one of the two, though, it would be the first one. Any way you could work on the actual graphic a little bit?
Bogglins. Very neat idea as well. The UP are very unique. Any way you can add a mist of perfume coming out of the P as if it were a bottle? No need to make it look like a bottle of perfume, but, could you just add a shadow (like Paula in her design)? I'd like to see how that looks.

Sure--but you could help :) Could you mention a 3 or 4 adjectives that you would use to describe the feeling of the logo you want? An example of what I'm looking for is a word like "elegant" (if that's what you're looking for!)

I'm sorry, Julie. I'm new to all this, so, feel free to ask for specifics from now on, as you just did. I apologize.
Elegant is an excellent word. I want this to be elegant, yet attention grabbing. Does that help at all?
Julie
08-01-2004, 07:17 AM
Yup, it does...I had a feeling that's what you were going for with the responses you've made. I'm working on something right now. Another question: was it the colors on the first one you gravitated toward? The font? I know you weren't crazy about the graphic :) It's definitely not elegant!
Julie
Here's my entry Melissa. :) Sorry for not getting here sooner.

Julie: As for the colors, I don't know that I want to go with something so muted. I think that the colors and fonts are where we will get the "attention grabbing" portion of what I said. Does that help at all?
Mark: Simple and elegant. Did you have any ideas for a small graphic?

Mark, that's neat. I like it. Let me see how it looks with the squigly lines being a bit shorter...not as long. Out of curiosity, are the squigly lines supposed to be the "infiniti" symbol?

Hi Melissa,

Well, as hard a decision as this was, and as much as I appreciate ALL your efforts and much time spent on this, I have decided to go with:
Paula
I can't possibly express how grateful I am for your quick revisions and attentiveness (all of you), and, I can't possibly express how talented I feel you all are. If I could have, I would have picked each one of you for a different website for each idea.
Thanks again to everyone.
I have posted my $500 template contest and I would love to see you all enter that as well.
Paula, what is the next step for moving this to the revisions forum? I only need very minor tweeking. Should be finished today, if you are online at all. Shouldn't take too long at all.
Melissa.

Well, I guess we can go forward here until we are moved. As for the fonts in your last submissions, I like the second third and fourth ones that you submitted (in your last submission). What I need is for you to move the graphic down a little bit, so that it appears more like a dot, before dot com. I also would like it to appear that the spray mist coming out of it, kind of blends into the "com."

jcambert

Not really. The size on the other one was perfect, so there really was no need to make it smaller, just move the actual graphic DOWN slightly. Let me see how that looks.

Melissa
Paula23
08-02-2004, 12:49 PM
Here are some different fonts and a few color options for the slogan. I also moved down the bottle without reducing it's size. As far a s the Template contest goes .I've never actually designed a template. I think you have to know how to program the template, and that's not something I'm familiar with. I do know that they have dynamite designers in the template section, so I know you won't be dissappointed.
Thanks,Paula
jcambert
08-02-2004, 12:51 PM
I'd like the bottle moved down to where the very top of the bottle is about half way between the top and bottom of the letters. I'd like the spray to come out straight, as opposed to slanted, and, the slogan is a bit too big/prominent. Please make it smaller.
Paula23
08-02-2004, 01:15 PM
Let me know if I'm on the right track.:)
Thanks,Paula
jcambert
08-02-2004, 01:19 PM
Almost there. One more revision, maybe two. First off, we can eliminate the first two options. I'm going with the third one. Then, you did perfectly as far as moving it down, but, can we make it sligthly bigger? Not MUCH bigger, only slightly, and, can you make the spray shadow wider so that it goes from the top of the letter "c" to the bottom of it?
The size, color and font of the slogan is absolutely perfect.

One last thing and we are finished, and, it's not a revision, it's an opinion. Let me see how this would look without the "UP" inside the bottle, compared to how it is now, and, please give me YOUR opinion as to which way YOU would do it.
Melissa

I'm so used to looking at the Logo with the UP that it looks naked without it. I would keep it the way it is. That way if you ever wanted to use the image on it's own , you would have the UP on there to represent the company name. You'll be able to pull the image from the files I will be sending in case you find you should want to do that.
Thanks,Paula
jcambert
08-02-2004, 01:56 PM
Ok, then go ahead and keep it on there. And, if it's not too much trouble, can you send me a file with the image on there, and text right below it that says
"Image coming soon"
Keep the "UP" on there for that one also. You can use the same font you used for the slogan.
I am going to use that as my default image, in case I don't have one for a product.
I'm assuming you will be emailing me the files in different formats, right? Including vector files? Please email me at:
