Hi everyone. I like the site so far, the designers here seem to do very nice work as well.
I am a 2nd year graphic design student, with some experience in 2d design, 3d design and web design.
I applied but I havent heard back yet (and that was like a week ago, so Im guessing maybe I wasnt accepted). Here is my online gallery (a work in progress -of course). Minds i Aesthetic Design Co. (http://www.delta.edu/jtchurch/)

-and because I am feeling the sting of rejection here  (and there werent a lot of logo design examples on my site so I can understand why) -I would like to propose an idea if I could:

Sometimes it is difficult for someone to get there foot in the door in the design world and build a portfolio without some motivation or focus. I think a site such as this would serve that purpose very well.
While on the other hand your aim is to serve the client as well, and you cant have a bunch of goombahs pushing second rate work either.

So how about this...
Create an temporary opening for those designers that may have skill, but not a lengthy portfolio. Somewhere in between a full gd member and a nobody. You give them a limited amount of time or number of trys to prove their worth, before either rejecting their application or accepting them as full gd members.

well...
what do you think? :brow:
please let me know.

Thanx

I think the words you're looking for are Apprentice Designers.... :P

First off, welcome to Design Outpost. Victoria is letting you know we have a program in place for designers that show promise but have yet to establish a sufficient portfolio for full membership.

After looking at your portfolio again, you might fit in that category. I'm really not seeing much in the line of logos. That's pretty much what I look for the most when a new application comes in.

You might want to check out Worth1000.com (http://www.worth1000.com) for some photoshop contests. You would do well with those. Warning: That site is very addicting. Prepare to spend several hours there. :D

Regarding how long it takes to get on the team. I send out invitations when the need arises. There isn't a specific time frame. Currently I think we have things pretty well covered. I will probably send some Apprentice invitations this weekend though.

Thanks for stopping by, good luck to you at school.

I would recommend spending your time developing "mock" design samples for your portfolio. It is easy enough to find subject matter, just pick up the local paper and find a logo that is really bad. This is NOT difficult to do, trust me.

I have been interviewing and hiring all levels of designers for over 10 years and I always appreciated students or recent grads who took the initiative to seek out problems to solve.

Give it a shot - just remember to do some homework to determine the target audience, competition and similar points of reference before doing any design work. In the end, these issues are mission critical to success.

Just a suggestion
