Hi Everyone,
Have a magazine called Madafu - 'Making a difference' the word Madafu means coconut in Swahili and usually refers the the green stage....
Anyway the magazine is due to come out monthly in the UK. It already has a fairly large subscription database and we will be marketing it to get into shops etc.
Hence the need for a catchy logo, probably wont be used on the front page etc but will be for advertising and give a mood/theme to the magazine.
Madafu is a cross between a Lifestlye (Men and Women) Current Affairs and slightly 'alternative' science/health magazine. It has regular science features, Vedic Astrology, features from Africa and India on self help work and news, columns on Vastu (Ancient Indian type of Feng shui) and vegetarian receipes/ideas.
A lot of the readers will have connections with India although they may not be of that origin.
Would like a bright multicultural looking logo, proffesional but unusual....... and maybe subtle coconut.....
It is a British Magazine so will be marketing here.
Colors - not really sure up to you, other design idea could be to use some sanskrit (old Indian language)
Again it will be incorporating News and Science so should look serious.
Right now got nothing in mind that I can show you but will give feedback on any ideas......
let me know on any more info you need. First time on this forum.
First Logo , then biz card and Letterhead
Prize $200
Good Luck

Thanks for the quick response Bill. I like your choice of colors so far, Nice start but would really like it to be more subtle and possibly include some sanskrit, it is going to be about deep subjects on ethnic issues so want to portray that. The idea of coconut is because of the goodness it offers more than the tropical mood if that makes sense..
having problems finding examples cos everything is either toooo ethnic or too not.

Hi, Rajasana aand welcome to DO ;)
Just to clarify your request: is the Project for logo only or is it for logo, businesscard and letterhead?
If latter, would you agree if I edited the topic title to show that the project is for the three items?
Thanks :)

yeah thanks, but logo should be agreed first... sorry

Tonya,
Thanks I like the subtle part, not tooo sure about the font, will ask others involved but feel a less arty font would be better. I would like to feel more connection between the title and the artwork if that makes sense. (with out making it hard to read)
:) thanx for early responses.. if i am not giving good info plz let me know never done this b4!

Hi Deanna,
Thanks for your entry, going in the right direction, would like to see some variations of color and maybe the Madafu less strongly 'sanskrit' style and the font below taking more that style if that would work......
My problem has been so far getting a hint of Indian culture in without it being so obvious, I still feel this is a bit too much.
look forward to seeing more.
Another idea is to incorportate the coconut more into the font and use a sanskrit symbol as a design, or else am open to using a conch shell, next to the coconut or anywhere as this is another way apart from sanskrit to get a bit of Indian/Hindu culture in.
thanks a lot,

 Thanks everyone for your entries.
Just wanted to mention something that might give you an idea of my goal. The magazine is sponsered by an Indian/Hindu he would like others come in on the project however it is aimed at non hindus. THere are a lot of very 'Indian/Hindu' magazines but not any that kind of open the door to the western audiance (not of Hindu/Indian origin) so we are trying to give it a subtle look with the Indian theme to bring in sponsers and subtley portray the roots but overall it shouldn't be scary and unobtainable like people often find other culture magazines etc.
If sanskirt is too intense, conch shells, chakra symbol, vedic astrology symbol anything but just not really obvious apart from that like the coconut and a font that is easy to read and quite formal.
Hope that helps a bit.
Bill any more ideas? just curious thanks..
by the way Tonya are you workin on anythin else if so, really like the bright colors and I liked the way you did that coconut in such a simplistic way just maybe add some other symbol next to it in the same mood and formalize the font a bit..
Amanda - thanks for your entry, interesting like the way the pic is above the title just the font could change slightly more formal and add a bit of something to give the indian feel. like the way it goes on brown. Am kind of interested to have a brighter option too in the same style, just to compare.
Deanna, thanks for all your ideas a comment I had is it just looks a bit arabic which could be problematic, I like the direction you are going in and even like the M sanskrit but it kind of needs to tone down. I think the last one works best so far just if we were to use the sanskrit M i think it needs to be in a shape and smaller or less obvious.. am not really a designer so cant picture what could work just have been told it could put the western audiance off... really like the font you are using for the madafu and making a difference on the third one.
you guys are all great. thanks a lot... we are gettin there.

Hi Guys,
Taldo - was just gonna post an idea when your entry came on. I like it, nice font, nice and subtle. will get any feed back on improvements but it looks good so far.
Another idea I had was maybe make the coconut into a bit of a charactor then i could incorporate all the neccersary different aspects onto the charactor.
If anyone has an idea of making their coconut into a charactor that could be used even throughout the magazine I think that would be a nice angle, however let me know what you think because am also happy with the direction things are going, just wanted to throw that one out there....
wish I had your skills..

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the great entries, lot of different choices, I am feeling it hard to decide.
so far am really liking Tonya, Taldo and could go Deanna if it just got a little more subtle.
anyway some feedback and an overall opinion.
Bill - guess I lost you....
Tonya - Really like the improvements font is good and like the style a lot, not sure about colors now but that could be changed easily in the final stages if I go your design, also at that point am hoping the 'making a difference' could also get with the theme. was wondering if any of the sanskrit or conchy things could be kind of be added but at the same time am happy with what you have done, in its simplicity.
Deanna - I know you worked a lot on this, I liked where we got to, but would have liked a slightly more subtle start with the sanskrit M idea you had, up to you but if you have time to play around there am really torn between the ones i mentioned.
Nvoke - as I said before nice format idea but the font werent right, thanks nway, ness you come up with anything else.
Taldo - really like yours a lot, prob like to change the color or maybe make it 2 tone if I went with you but don't think that would be hard. Also hoping you could add the rest of the wording and make a slight variation on the theme for biz cards etc. but overall you got the mood real quickly so thanks a lot for that!
Paula - Thanks for your entry and the thought you put into the design. I have seen your other stuff on the forums and was really hoping you would enter my logo contest:D we like what you did however it is a bit arty intense for this particular logo. I like the conch design and peacock feather. The font should be straight and not keen on the brown. I don't know if you feel like playing around to make it a lot simpler or not but after seeing the others really simple approach I think I will stick with that style (n i hav got some to choose from), however am also going to need a few other bits in a future contest so hope you will be bak nxt time.
Kimber - thanks for entering, like the font on Madafu but the 2 tone and font underneath don't really do it for me, think you can see the style am looking for, if you have any more ideas would be very happy but again really want the straight font and subtle, simple arty piece next to it. However I do quite like the Mad - afu color change and like the colors in your first logo most of all, although am keen on other colors apart from green too......
 feel horrible saying I don't like parts cos I cant do nthing as gud as what you've all done, however hope am getting my points across and thanks for the work, and variety you have given so far..

Hi Everyone,
thanks for your all your entries, really great stuff to choose from, makes it hard.
Thanks Jason and Bogglins for your entries, they were great but I think am still going for the original favourites.
Paula and Deanna really like the revisions however the others are still leaning in the direction of Tonya and Taldo. Not 100% but going that way. Thanks so much anyway.
Tonya could you please give us an example of a different color combo, can still be green and yellow just that yellow is not feeling quite right (or go different as you think fits....) also can you let us see how you would include making it happen, thanks a lot.
Taldo can you give us a different color idea and also add the making it happen in some way, bearing in mind this is going to be for all our publicity stuff. thanx....
Really appreciate all the work everyone did, thanks for getting us this far.

Hi Tonya,
been a bit busy sorry. Thanks for the great logo, am really happy.
Basically I like the color scheme you have done so far, however would like to get biz card and letter head in that. then would like if poss. to get a b + w version. and also if poss...... using one color... sorry if that is a trouble, let me know.
because will get some biz cards done in the full color but then some using a total of two colors.
also made a mistake is should be making a difference underneath, (I have two projects on the go and put the wrong logo) if that is too long or doesnt look rite you can use 'make a change' wot prog did you do it in, cos I have illistrater, freehand and photoshop so if it is any of those maybe i could get the files unflattened and in the future adjust colors more.... cos i would like to see it with some red in as well somehow...
apart from that really look forward to seeing the biz card etc, do I need to give you info, how do you save those?
would like the biz card to be quite catchy with logo central.
thanks again and let me know what info if any you need.
if you got a lot of projects on the go don't feel you have prioritise me, anytime soon is good.

That's no trouble at all. I would normally provide a color version (4 colors were used in this case), plus a black & white version. Adding in a 2-color version (black + one other color) is no problem. I would think using the green for that would be the best choice. What do you think?

I'll change the tagline to "making a difference". I can adjust the size/spacing the text to make that fit.
I work in Adobe Illustrator, so I'll be giving you vector Illustrator files, in addition to some other formats. You'll be able to adjust the colors from the Illustrator file in the future if you want. I actually tried red when I was working on that last revision, but I didn't think it went well with the green and yellow, so I ended up using a blue. I'll play around with red again, though, and see if I can come up with an alternate color version that includes some red.

I already started on a BC design, so I'll continue on with that (didn't want to go too far with it until I knew if you wanted any changes to the logo) and work on the LH as well. I should have some designs to show to later tonight.
The only other thing I need from you is the information for the business card. Name, address, etc... whatever you'll want on it (letterhead too). If you don't want to post it here, just send it to me via PM.

I don't have the BC to show yet, but in in the meantime, here's a view of the logo is a few alternate colors. I've got the regular 4-color version that I'd done before, plus a 5-color that includes a bit of red, a B&W version and a 2-color with green and black.
These also have the corrected tagline ("making a difference"), which I changed the font on because I thought it was a little bit too faint before. Let me know what you think.
I'll have BC and LH samples up later today.

Can you give me all those logos in the files cos I really cant decided on the red or not and the others involved are not available till after the weekend.
Red included is really growing on me as i write this, if when designing the bc you think it would look really catching with 5 colors can you use all of them if you think it doesnt make that big a difference leave it as four just thought some red font mite bring out the color but quite honestly I cant picture stuff so i really leave it up to you.
Green is fine as the 2 color option as is the b and w.
I did like the way the tagline was faded but you are probably right so lets just go with everything how it is.
thanks a lot.

Sure, I'll include all 4 versions of the logo in the final package.
Still working on the letterhead, but here is a business card (I couldn't decide if I liked the green or the blue). Let me know what you think of this design. I was going for bold and colorful, with the logo playing a very prominent role on the card.

Okay, I'll get to work on the final file package and PM you with the download link as soon as it's ready. I'll include all 4 versions of the logo (4-color, 5-color, 2-color and B&W), the 3 business cards (I got your PM with the info for the other 2) and the letterhead.
I think I like the blue better too on the business cards and the letterhead because it goes better with the large pale grey coconut and it also makes the little green coconut in the logo stand out a bit more. But just in case you aren't sure, I'll include both the blue and green versions of the BCs and the LH.
