“Midas Computing” logo $120 prize
First off, I’d like to say how impressed I am by the sheer quality of all the designers here on DO. Watching you guys work is as addictive a ‘net pursuit as playing inklink!
This is the first competition of three I’ve got planned, I’ll be wanting business cards & stationery and a leaflet / flyer at some point soon, too.
I’d like this done in a week, but I think that’s a bit optimistic, so I’ll say a deadline of eleven days – that’s the 22nd of August.
Good luck everyone!
Jonathan
Here comes the brief:
“Midas Computing” Company Info :
We are a small start-up business targeting SOHO (Small Office Home Office) & domestic customers, providing them with everything from email and webhosting through to repairs and phone support.
Our products and services :
MidasCall - Onsite service & repairs
MidasCare - Monthly service plans
MidasWeb - Email, internet & web services
MidasNet - Small business, home & wireless networks
MidasConsult - Small Business IT advice
MidasMachines - Specialist computers
MidasRemote - Remote support & administration
Customer profile :
SOHO (Small Office, Home Office), teleworkers, small retail businesses, home users.
Variations :
I’d like the design to be flexible enough to be usable in a few different variations :
1 Just the logo/icon on it’s own.
2 With the text : Midas Computing
3 With the text : midascomputing (dot) com,
4 With the text : Midas Computing Ltd. (we plan to incorporate at a later point)
5 Any of the above 3 with the following tagline:
Service, support & solutions for home & small business
Usage :
B&W on invoices, faxes, etc. laser printed stuff.
Colour on business cards, compliments slips, letterhead, website, printed advertising, vinyl stickers on car (currently metallic grey), polo shirts (black) etc.
Format :
Must be supplied in several different file formats including un-flattened, as it will be used in many different ways. I will probably be more specific once I’ve found a printer. (UK suggestions welcome!) I’d like to be able to change the tagline, etc, in the future, without any hassle.
Fonts :
Please use free or very, very cheap fonts. (Sorry to any font designers!).
Mood :
I would like this logo to look very professional for our business clients, but without alienating home users or very small businesses by looking like we’re too expensive, corporate, or intimidating. We aren’t the cheapest, though, and we justify our prices by being certified, professional & customer orientated. It is important that the logo reflects this.
I like :
Logos that incorporate the initials of the company name,‘optical illusion’ style things like M. C. Escher, jigsaws, triangles……….
I want the logo/icon to be able to stand alone, without any supporting text, and still be memorable/relevant.
What I don’t like:
Swooshes………
I don’t really want people to go for the blatant “King Midas” “golden touch” thing.
But if you can think of something really subtle, or really clever, then go for it.
Any questions, just ask!
Again, good luck!!!!
:o)

I'd just like to add:
reading the above post back to myself, it sounds like I've got a specific style in my head, but I just can't verbalise it.
That's not really the case.
So please, if you have an idea that you think is good, but doesn't quite fit into what I've said above, please just go for it!!
I'd like nothing better than to go : "Woah, that's great, I never thought of *that!*"
Cheers!

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for being the first to dive in!
But I'm afraid that this design isn't doing it for me.
I don't like the scripty font, prefer something cleaner and more business like.
And the logo doesn't seem to gel right, and doesn't really feel very 'computery' either, if that makes sense.
Also, I just noticed that when I cut and pasted the brief, I missed this bit:
Colours :
Two colours + black preferred – must also work in B&W.
Solid colours only please. Other than that, open to suggestion.
Would be nice if colours worked on light or dark background…
Thanks again though, and please have another go!!
Cheers,
Jonathan

Hi,
Thanks for your entries! Here's some feedback, let me know if any further clarification is needed
Bogglins - I’m not so keen on this one, I’m afraid. The font is along the right lines, but is a little bit unremarkable. And the orbital ring part is a bit ‘swooshy’. Also I’m not keen on the colour combination. I’d rather see any other ideas you might have, rather than develop this one any further. :o)
Jason - This has the sort of feel I had in mind.
Nice font treatment, and it looks like with a few adjustments the ‘.com’ or ‘ltd’ will fit too.
Logo – I quite like the concept, but it’s not quite right. Looks a bit like a bunny wabbit, but I take it it’s King Midas?. I like that it’s clean and very subtle.
I like the colour too. Can you develop it a bit more, maybe show some variations?
Fabian - This wasn’t a style I had in mind, but I think it looks good. The layout works well, and you’ve got a strapline in (The original strapline is too long, isn’t it?)
Logo – again, nice concept, but I’m a bit concerned that it looks like an ‘n’ when you look at it in isolation. I quite like the fact that it looks a bit like two fingers pressing a big orange button! It would be good if they were doing something more computer related? I don't know if that's possible!?
Colour I like, but I’d like to see some others, and I'd like to see any other ideas you might have.
Anyone else out there thinking about having a go?
Jonathan

Yes the strapline is a tad to long, hope you don't mind me chopping it a bit:)
How about the two fingers on a mouse;)
Anyone else out there thinking about having a go?
Jonathan
I'll have a go. Are you opposed to the 'touch' and 'gold' concepts?
Midas
08-15-2004, 10:06 AM
Raja - I do have a slight aversion to the whole 'golden touch' thing, but it could be overcome if your idea is strong enough.

Fabian - Nice idea, I just don't think it's working quite right. Now you can see the serif at the top of the first stroke on the letter 'm', and it loses the slightly 3d 'finger' effect it had before. And the mouse just isn't sitting right either. If you go back to the first version, could you move the 'm' just a tiny bit to the right so you can *just* see the inside of the vertical stroke on the left. Then I was wondering about other ways to 'computerise' it up a bit - maybe some sort of pixellation effect in the top right corner?
Raja - I was just browsing your site, and loved the Norah Jones logo! I also really like the one below it with the clever use of negative space, and I think the 'EdgeLink' logo is genius!
I find these kind of clever effects really appealing, it's great when a logo works on a couple of different levels.
Everyone else - Come on!!! Dive in!!! Pleaaasseee!!! :D

I was actually trying to stay away from "King Midas" with that one. I guess it was just another happy accident. I have been trying to come up with variations for it but I haven't been able to come up with anything worth posting yet. However, I did come up with something new.

Here's my entry... :)
Midas
08-17-2004, 06:49 PM
The power has been off in our street for a while, so it's great to get back online and see some more designs! Here's my comments. They're addressed individually, but there's probably pointers for everyone in each of them....
Jason - Once again, I totally love your font treatment, I like that clean, solid, modern, sans serif look.
For that reason, I prefer your first logo. This 'scripty' logo would be great for a law firm, or other 'prestigious' sort of thing - but I need something more clean, solid, modern, etc. A bit 'techy', or 'computery'.
I really like your first logo, I would just like it if you could develop it into something a bit more relevant, or something a bit clevererer(?!?).
Also, I'm loving that colour!! It's my favourite so far, and looks great with black & white.
So to recap, stay with the fonts, layouts, and colour you've already presented, and work on that first logo. If you can't do anything with it, try something else in a similar sort of style - chunky & modern. Thanks!
Fabian - Thanks for being so prompt with your responses, it's really appreciated.
The pixellation thing - I mean sort of like that, and sort of like the images I've attached to the next post. (Please excuse my poor attempts at image manipulation!!).
I'm imagining as if the button was 'digitalising'(!) thanks to the midas touch of the fingers!! (I dont believe I just said that, I must be getting carried away with myself!)
I'm just trying to link it to computers on a really subtle level. The mouse was too obvious on your design - it needs to suggest hi-tech or computers on the same subtlety level as the finger concept. Does that make sense?
Colour-wise, I like the original orange the best.
Could you play with the 'fingers' - make them look a bit more 3d or distanced from the 'button'? But still look like an 'm'?
I think the 'm' at the start of midas should emulate the 'm' in the logo, not the other way round.
Oh, could you also post your examples a little bit larger, I'm on a 12.1" laptop..
Eagle - I was hoping you would show up! Thanks for your entry! Your logo really suprised me, which is a good thing! not sure about the nose/crease, though. Maybe simplify the head even more, make it more subtle? I can almost see the hair and the face turning into an 'm' & a 'c'...... Oh, and 'computerise' it a little bit too......
I like the fonts also, but I'm not keen on the gradient style fill. I prefer the way Jason's done it with one word in black, and the other word in a solid colour. Is that ok?
Juvanescence & Bogglins - I'd really appreciate it if you could find the time to have another shot!
Raja - I actually went 'right click>show picture' on your avatar before I saw it move - doh...got me.
Everyone else - There's still a few designers that haven't posted who I'd *love* to see from! Come on!!!
Thanks everyone!!

Hi everyone,
I'm a little concerned that things aren't really going the way I'd like here, probably because I've been too restrictive with my brief? I'm still waiting for something to make me go *wow*! I know you guys can do it!!! :)
So please, just go with your hearts, do whatever you like!! I hereby remove all restrictions - colours, fonts, style, anything at all, just go for it!!!
Also, I don't mind if any designers want to dig out old designs that are still un-used from previous contests.
I wish I could be more specific about what I wanted!! :ermm: Unfortunately, I can only really say - yes I like that, or no, I don't like that... I don't want to seem like a difficult customer!!
Jason - You're getting very close to something great, I just can't see the route to get there!! The top half of the little man could work, but not the 'legs'. My colleague wondered why he's not wearing any trousers! Maybe you could think of something computer related to fill the space at the bottom? I think I'm settling on the first font, but I still like the second one too. So if you think of something that only works with the second font, go for it.
RSI - Thanks for your entry. Unfortunately I think the different elements are a bit incongruous, and I can't see any connection to our line of business. What I do like though, is the font used for the 'm' in the circle. I'd be very grateful if you can think of anything else.
Design General - Thanks also for pitching in. I'm not keen on the first logo, but the second one I like more. It could be a contender with a bit more refinement. Font-wise, I like the 'computing' font, but the 'Midas' font is a little too blocky.
Everyone - It would be good if there was at least a hint of computery/hi-tech feel to the design
Finally, Thank you so much everyone for your efforts so far, it is definately very appreciated!!
Cheers! :drink:

Raja - I'm eagerly anticipating your entry!!

RSI - nice work! I think it will look great with a couple of modifications. Instead of the circuit board effect, could that part be solid? And also could you extend the 'm' down to the edge?
I've attached a version I modified myself this way, please forgive my lack of artistic ability!!
I really like the fonts, too.
Could you change the colours to black for the 'midas', the 'fingers' and the ring around the button, and orange for the button, the 'computing', and the dot above the 'i'?
Thanks!!!!

RSI - Love it! There's no need for any more revisions on this one, unless you think of something really good. I might want you to try a few different colours, and it might need 'massaged' a little to make room for a strapline, but we'll worry about that later, if this design is the winner.
Good job!!!

mbleigh - Thanks for your entry! I quite like where you're coming from with this, but I think the logo on it's own looks like a loudspeaker company. The art deco style font is nice too, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate.
DG - I do really like this design, but I feel it's lacking something I can't quite put my finger on.....sorry to be so vague! I like the way the 'c' is made up from the negative space, I think it's probably the 'm' that I'm not so keen on. Does this make any sense?

Fabian - Hi, I'm glad you posted again, thanks. This design is really quite nice. Very clean & simple, the mouse pointer is a little obvious, but that's ok. Although I'm not sure if the graphic would work on it's own, on say a polo shirt for example? I hope you can find a way to improve it a little - I don't think it needs much...

Deanna - Thanks for your entry! I like the concept, except for a couple of things. Could you perhaps make the laptop keyboard look less 'hand drawn', more geometric and a bit more abstract? Maybe you could incorporate a 'c' into it somehow, too? (I can almost see it already, by highlighting certain keys). And could you try a few san serif fonts, rather than the serif ones you've shown?
Thanks! I look forward to seeing your revisions!

Deanna - Woah, that was fast! Maybe you should be called 'Quickerdoodle Studios'! I hope you don't mind me messing with your work, but I thought it might be easier to describe my thoughts with an illustration. I was thinking of the 'c' going the other way, and being more of a match for the 'm'. Also, I tried to simplify it even further, and finally I tried to take the sharp corners off to give it a more solid, chunky, icon sort of feel. I hope you can see where I'm coming from! Can you take it a bit more in this direction?
Thanks again!

I hope you do, because your font treatment is definately one of my favourites so far - It really delivers the sort of image I'm going for. Deanna - That's great!! You seem to have really taken my comments on board. I love the grey outline, and you've really 'chunkified' it up.... Now the fonts feel quite flat in comparison - can you 'chunkify' the fonts a bit, too? For reference, I really like RSI's & Design Generals fonts - at the moment, your fonts are *almost* there, but to me they seem like title or heading fonts, rather than logo fonts, if you catch my drift.....more to be read than to be looked at....
::edit:: (also not keen on italics)
(Jeez...I can see that being a logo designer must be about 50% design skills, and 50% trying to work out what the hell the client is going on about....!)
Hope you can help me further :D

Note to all designers - Colourwise, a lot of you seem to be going for the orangey sort of thing. Maybe this is because of the midas 'golden touch' thing, maybe it's because I've expressed some satisfaction with designs done in this colour.
My attitude to this is that I've wanted to concentrate on the designs, thinking that once a design has won the contest, I can then try it in a variety of colours, and decide what works best.
Colour is something I figured I'd settle on once the design had been settled. So no design will be penalised because of colour choice.
So I'd be grateful if designers could use a few different colours, as I'm still open to suggestions in that area.
Like I said, the winner will be chosen on design merit only - I will be playing around with colours *after* a design has been chosen.
But I'm open to inspiration in this respect as much as any other.
Thanks,
Jonathan

DG - Mmmmmmmm..... Very nice! I like this a lot!! I looked at it and straight away I could see the potential for making it a bit more abstract by extending the strokes of the 'm' and the 'c' to the edge of the icon. I'll try and modify it myself to explain what I mean.
Raja - The more I see your logo, the more I love it - It has no obvious connection to our line of work that I can see (please enlighten me if I'm wrong here), but it is just *so* slick and professional looking, and somehow 'trustworthy'. It would definately inspire confidence in our customers. It would make us look 'bigger' than we actually are.... Hi Raja,
I’m sorry, I should have been more specific in my last request but I was finding it hard to verbalise my thoughts. So we decided it would be better to try a few colour combinations ourselves. I’ve been playing around with a coy of fireworks, and we’ve concluded thus:
• I’m not very good at this kind of thing :(
• The design works brilliantly regardless of colour combination. Nice one :)
• The green colour is perfect – works well on light or dark backgrounds. We found some other nice colours, but prefer the green. It also comes out a nice mid-grey when converted to mono / photocopied.
• The dark blue colour is perfect for white or light colour backgrounds. It also translates nicely to black when photocopied or printed in mono. But it is a little too dark to work on a black/dark grey background.
• On a dark background (ie polo shirts, black vehicles) it might be better to substitute the blue for something lighter & brighter eg. #0033CC. What do you think of this idea? Is it practical, in your experience?
• We prefer it without the outer ring / halo on the logo.
• We love the fonts used, both the original double decker version, and the long ‘on one line’ version. No changes needed there..
What is your native file format? We’d like to receive a few different variations including an unflattened vector format, Is this ok with you?
We’re nearly there, thanks for your input with all this, it is greatly appreciated.
Jonathan

Raja,
Nice going there with Fireworks
That's kind of you, but I don't think I'll be joining the design team any time soon, lol.
But hey, it's served it's purpose, cos I think we've got the colours nailed. Great!
Re: file formats, I know plenty of people with photoshop, so presumably if you give me it in that format, I can convert it to most other formats from there? Is this correct?
The only other thing is a strapline. I'm not sure how one might work. Any ideas? It's not essential, but we'd like to try the option, if possible.
Thanks,
Jonathan
Hi
Here I took the liberty to try and improve the mark
I also included your very short tag line

Hey, you're the designer, anything you can think of to improve the design, feel free to try!!
However in this case, I think I prefer the previous version.
If you want to play with it, one thing that might be nice would be a version with texture or shading or a bit of a 3d feel, for full colour use, etc :)

Yeah, I think we'll be ditching that tagline. For now just use 'Solutions for home & small business', and try and integrate it more tightly into the original 2 line logo. Once you've got something to fit, we'll brainstorm a new tagline of the right length.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Raja,
I haven't heard from you in a couple of days, presumably you've been busy. We've been looking at this ourselves, and we've settled on a few things:
See my next post for where we want to go with this. (A picture paints a thousand words, so they say)
Re: tagline - We're thinking of cutting it to : Service, Support, Solutions. What do you think? It'll certainly make it an easier fit.
Re: 'Midas Computing' text - we prefer the version that follows, with the extra 'bar' after 'computing'. We think a) it looks better and b) it gives us more flexibility to add dot com, etc.
Re: dark background / brighter green - We think this works, do you? As a professional designer, can you foresee any problems with this approach? I can't find a green that works equally well on a white or dark background. Can you?
Re: One line / all white text version - This works really well, and we'll go with this too, for applications that don't suit colour. The two fonts still stand out, with one of them being bold.
I hope this clarifies what we're after.
Nearly there!!
Thanks a lot!!
Jonathan
Hey, I'm getting good at this fireworks malarky - Not only can I change the colours of stuff, I can move stuff around, and type stuff, too!!

This is just an example to let you know what we're thinking - I'm sure you'll do better!

Oh, I just noticed a post of yours in another thread that says you're away until the 4th, so I'll stop talking to myself.....
I'm probably going to be away myself from the 4th til the evening of the 6th GMT, so I'll check back then.
If you've been on holiday/vacation, I hope you had a great time!:D
Jonathan
Hi
Sorry, about that, I really thought I had dropped a little note in this thread to let you know that I would be away for a few days, I must have forgotten.
Did you know one of the signs of genius is "talking to your self"...:)
The reason I had originally placed a horizon 'breaker' line was so that the icon could translate to black and white and still have the same effect of the M 'stepping over the hill concept'
Here are some variations and a look at it in B&W
RE: tagline, hmm... is it possible to go with "Midas, computing for your business"

I always thought it was a sign of madness, but they say there's a fine line between the two.... :woot: :wee:  :santa:

Yeah, I see what you mean. It would be handy to have a version like that. However, we think the previous version looks better in colour and in grayscale.

Unfortunately, no, because about 40% of our business is domestic clients.
So, just to recap:
Colours: We'll go with the original colours, except on black where we'll use the brighter blue.
Text: We'll use both the two line version and the one line version. Both in colour, and both in white when on a dark background. We'll also use both text variations with other second words, eg MidasCall, MidasMachines, etc
Icon: The icon is fine now, we prefer it with blue 'sky' and green 'hill', not the other way around. If we ever need to print in true B&W, we'll use your second version with the thin line.
Strapline: I think we're going to stick with 'Service, Support, Solutions'
So really, the only thing left to sort out is the arrangement of the icon, text block and strapline, and their relative sizes. The first one on your last post is almost there, how about trying it so the 'midas computing is the same height as the icon?
:)
Jonathan
sorry, I hadn't seen this post, appologies. What format do you require the final logo in?

Hi Raja,
Please excuse my lack of knowledge regarding graphics file formats and colours. I'm not really sure about the difference between RGB & CMYK. I noticed that fireworks was having difficulty differentiating similar colours, so I downloaded an evaluation version of Paint shop pro. which seems to understand the colours better.
1) File Format : I've just discovered PSP opens photoshop files, so .psd will do nicely. If I have problems, I know plenty of people with photoshop.
2) Colours : Please use the original colours, PSP says they are:
green-R43 G166 B45 I24
blue-R11 G56 B89 I7
3) Icon : Please use blue for the *top*, green for the bottom.
4) Strapline : Please use the all lower case version, with the dots instead of commas.
5) Black Background : Please also supply the version you posted on 08-29-2004, with the 'midascomputing' all on one line in white, and the brighter blue. (PSP - R0 G51 B204 I21)
6) B&W version with 'breaker' line : would be nice to get this too.
7) Fonts : Please supply the fonts, obviously.
8) Tidy up : The bottom half of the circle is one or two pixels to the right on the later versions. Can you line it up properly, please?
I think that's everything, so once you've gone through this list, send me the files, and we should be all done :)
Thanks for your time & patience.
Jonathan
