Company name:
Web Photos Pro
Company profile:
Web Photos Pro sells a desktop application (called Web Photos Pro) plus server software that makes it easier to organize and upload digital photos to the web. There will be a follow-on product called Easy Web Photos aimed at consumers, that provides much of the same functionality, but with a simpler more-intuitive interface.
Domain name:
www.webphotospro.com
$$:
We are offering $250 for two pages (coded as XHTML + CSS please), but will likely purchase additional pages after the design has been purchased.
What is the scope of this project?:
Redesign of existing site. The current site is built around a blog, and while I would like to keep some of the blog elements, I'm finding that while it's a great way to update the site, it's not a great way to present the information. I guess I'm looking for an in-between design, one that let's me use WordPress for the site updates, but that presents the data in a more logical manner (i.e. less crowded and fussy).
Who is the intended audience?:
Possible purchasers of Web Photos Pro application. Photo bloggers and other power users (e.g. photo pros, in house art departments, architecture firms, etc.) It should be easy for the user to answer "what does this product do?" and "how can I try it?" and "tell me more".
Who Is A Typical User?
Meet Joe. He works in the in-house art department at a small catalog company, art directing and implementing the yearly catalog. He dreads January when the Summer catalog springs into action. He has so many photos to manipulate that he has to spend weeks getting them all up in place, sized individually etc etc
Web Photos Pro will revolutionize his job, making his day easier, less of a hassle and saving hours/days of time. What was drudgery should now be fun.
The logo or web site should feel state-of-the-art, in a way that people can see and touch. We are dealing with the web but it's not just the virtual world, it's the world of images and photos - most of which are valuable and or personal in some way.
The logo should convey ease, speed, simplicity, (the beauty of great design being that it makes complicated things seem simple). Clean lines, simple, strong colors, but not garish or day glo.
This same sense of design and visual simplicity is critical to the web site as well. Here the emphasis should be on simplicity, an uncluttered look with the aspect of photo images being present somehow.
PS If a new name comes to mind we'd be open to that too.

Hi frankleahy
I have started on an entry for you but you say that you want the delivery in XHTML and CSS. I can make it in HTML and CSS but if you only accept XHTML I can't enter.

Hi Anne,
Yes, straight HTML and CSS is fine.
By the way, I'm about to put up a revision/enhancement to the design spec...please look for it in about an hour.
Thanks,
-- Frank
I code to standards (XHTML/CSS), and would like to enter. However, I would prefer to wait on the logo to be done first.
Will that contest be complete before this one?
Hi Frank.
Just wanted to show you what I've made so far.
Version 1 (http://www.newfacedesign.net/do/wpp/)
f you like the style I will redesign it to fit your new spec (or make a new one if you don't like it :)).
Looking forward to your feedback

Hi all,
Thanks for all the replies!
I just added a section to the original requirements called "Who Is A Typical User" which also has some info about the logo look and feel we're looking for. Please take a look at it and see if that helps you at all.
It's midnight here in London, we'll get back to you with specific comments tomorrow.
Thanks,

Hi,
Thanks for submitting a design idea for us.
We liked the use of real photos, (especially with classy dropped shadow not white edges). The colors were fine. But we'd like to pass on some suggestions for revisions if you're up for it.
Overall the page is too busy, too much type, too small a typeface, (I know you were trying to squeeze in everything that was already there on our home page but feel free to edit). Think "magazine ad" for the look, as opposed to "brochure." at least for the home page. Photos are often beautiful classy things, amazing to look at and especially interesting to the people who took them. We want this to be artistic as well as functional.
Showing one photo as opposed to several might be interesting. Just like designing a magazine ad we'd like to hook people in emotionally, and then guide them to the info they need step by step. Currently all the type info has similar prominence, so where does the reader look first? It would help to prioritize the info and therefore guide the reader what to read in what order. We suggest editing and simplifying the home page so that it creates an atmosphere of creativity as opposed to a standard web site.
One last thought, it might help to insert somewhere a photo on a computer screen for instant clarity of the product and what it does, (not the main visual but dropped in somewhere small).
Thanks for working with us on this.
Kind regards,
Web Photos Pro
Thank you for the greate feedback.
I agree, I think it is too busy as well :) I'll work on a revision for you.

Hi,
I've removed the "Website You Like" section from the original request because we think it reduces flexibility for the designer -- we don't want them to think that we want the templates to be derivative of any particular site, and certainly not the ones we had there.
With kind regards,
-- Frank Leahy
Hi Frank.
I've made a "new" design for you but kept some elements from the previous design. Hope this is more what you're looking for.
I've made two different layout, one that stretch 100% and one that don't.
100% width

Frank,
I need to let you know that I will have to postpone my entry until I better know what is going to happen with Hurricane Frances.
I live in South Florida, right where she is looking to land, so I don't want to put in an entry then something happen here with power or worse, and not be able to do my revisions in a timely manner.
So, I will work on my entry for you when the path is all clear :)

THANK YOU for all of the logos and website templates so far! None of them are quite what we had in mind. It is most likely that our directions have not been detailed enough to get you to where we want to be, so we're going to try again below. Please excuse this back and forth -- this is the first time we've used Design Outpost, and the process is quite different from the one-to-one/face-to-face conversations with designers that we are used to.
NEW DIRECTIONS FOR THE LOGO and WEBSITE:
LOGO:
We are looking for something more realistic, and less abstract or cartoony. Think real life photos. Also think real life colors, sun, sea, earth, sky, cornfields, woods, red wine, as opposed to computer colors.
For our professional photographer, corporate, and photo blogger targets, we want to create something beautiful and aspirational. Also, think of using a photo image/images or a slide/slides as the icon, as opposed to the camera that we originally suggested.
LOGO + WEBSITE:
We are having a little trouble thinking about the logo in isolation from the web site (which is why we'd hoped that someone might bid on both at the same time). One idea we have for the web site is one or more rows of very small photos in the top frame, or somewhere else on the page, with one of those small photos repeated much larger as the main photo on the web site. Perhaps we would have a rotating color pallette, ie one day a row of all sea and sky shots, in blue tones with the main photo picked from one of the mini photos. The next day there might be a corn/sunflower yellow theme, followed by a green trees and fields theme, then a red apples and red wine theme, etc. Our target audience will be drawn to the beauty and simplicity of the main photo on the web site, and then they will stay to read the detail. It should look more like a photographers portfolio website than shutterfly or ofoto. Think something between http://www.photoblogs.org/ and http://www.photoblogger.org/.
p.s The logo colors should be in the earth/sky/sea/grass palette, and should not change, but stay consistent regardless of what images are being shown on the web site. Please avoid using yellow or pale colors for the logo type. And if you use a photo or slide+photo icon, it could be realistic 4-color or stylistic 2-color, or even hyper-realistic such as the iMovie and iPhoto application icons.
p.p.s. If you want to use any of our images, please take a look at http://cornwall.backtalk.com/albums-static/cornwall/
Thank you for all your ideas and work so far, and for being patient with us.
-- Frank and Rachel

Hello Frank,
Here is my entry. I was going to wait until the logo contest was finished but I decided to go ahead without it. Here are three pages with different banner images which can be rotated.

Fantastic! You really read the brief, and got what we were trying to convey.
The colors are great, professional, subtle, non-fussy. Even the lack of a logo, with just the type treatment for "Web Photos Pro", looks great (unfortunately we haven't found anything that we're happy with in the logo contest...)
Questions/comments:
1. How would you deliver this? As XHTML and CSS? Something else?
2. The large photo across the top (clouds, apples, forest) looks a bit too much like a part of the web site as opposed to a photo. For example, the apple photo makes it look like a apple orchard web site, and the forest photo makes it look like a forestry web site. We love the photos, but would like to see them hilited on the page differently. Maybe a bit more like what they've done on http://www.photoblogs.org/ with the photo of the day?
3. We will want the home page to be slightly different from the inside pages. The inside pages will be in the format you've got, main copy on the left, and side bars on the right (though the actual side bar headings will likely be different -- we're learning a lot about the site as I've been finishing the documentation, etc.).
On the home page, we are thinking of using the right side bar area to highlight real people using the product, a weblogger, a photoblogger, an architect, etc. -- could you think about what those might look like? Not sure what the middle of the home page should look like, but it needs to be more inviting than what we've got now. I'm envisioning a quadrant (?) with graphics and text in each box that leads someone into the product -- what does this product do? what does it look like? how do i try it? great i want to buy it!
4. Love the little icons you've done next to "Recent Entries", "Categories", etc.
5. Not sure where we go from here...maybe you can respond and let us know how much revision you're happy doing here, vs how much you would do if we were to close the contest and work with you in the revision forum.
Thanks for a fabulous entry,
-- Frank

Anne,
First, let me apologize for not replying to your second entry right away...very sorry about that.
I love your second treatment, but it's not right for this particular product. We will have a follow-on product called "Easy Web Photos" that is geared to the consumer market, and this second design has the kind of "reach out and touch it" feel that we'd want for that product.
I don't know if you're interested in giving it a third try, but whether you are or not, thank you very much for your entries.
With kindest regards,
-- Frank Leahy
Thank you for the feedback.
I got the feeling from your previous post that my design wasn't what you was looking for. I might give it another try if I get the time.
Looking forward to the next competition and maybe I can enter that with the design I've already made.

Hi Frank,

Here is my entry:

Wow! Another really nice entry...and quite different from the previous one...you've got us scratching our heads wondering how to decide.
Very friendly, approachable, usable front door layout. I find my eye starting at the shot of the little girl, going to the headline on the left, then down the page, just as you would want it to. Really nice job with the top headline for power users, followed by the "free download" button, followed by another headline below that gives the maybe-not-quite-so-power-user a reason to keep reading and scrolling down.
A couple of questions:
1. The fonts are non-standard, are you assuming these would be gifs, or would you use a standard font (verdana, arial, etc.)? Can you talk a little about the font choices, and which ones are important to the design, etc.?
2. The picture of the girl is something that we would buy from stock? Would you see that staying constant or rotating to different pictures?
3. The very light gray for the section buttons (home, downloads, purchase, examples, etc.) -- is this so light to keep them out of the way temporarily? If so, what might they really look like? Rollovers, hilites?
Thanks!
-- Frank and Rachel
Frank,
Actually, the fonts are standard. The bolder navigation and headlines are GEORGIA and the rest of the text is Verdana ;) You should have no issues, and none of the text as you see it will have to be an image except the logo.
The photo is one that I purchased for your template, so you do not have to buy it :) - you can rotate by either having a new image placed in a div on click (I code full tableless XHTML/CSS) - as well you can change the entire scheme as you mentioned if you like as well by just clicking a link and applying a new stylesheet. Further, you can also change that photo ON LOAD as is done on my sons website at http://www.nikolaskai.com/ - just refresh the browser a few times and you can see what I mean... That is done with a javascript. You really have lots of options that you can explore for the functionality after the layout is decided, and if you choose this design for your site, we can discuss the creation of additional stylesheets and imagery further afterward.
The navigation at the top can be any color you like - I just chose the lighter gray so that your eyes were more drawn to the photo, headline and download button rather than the navigation - but we can darken it up a bit if you like. On hover they can change to any color you like, but I would say that the shade of blue that is used would fit nicest - and then as well as the color change, add maybe the arrow that you see there on hover too... OR if you would like those menus to do more than what you see, we can add a drop menu (again in all css) - again, limitless :)

Hello Frank,
Thank you for the feedback. I can deliver this page in HTML/CSS. I will try to work on the revisions today and have it up by tonight or tomorrow.
Ken
Frank,
Above, I stated that the font used for the nav and headlines was Georgia - when actually it is GeorgiaBold, and not the standard Georiga font. Here is the standard Georgia, just so you can see.
Let me know if you want to see any other font styles :)

Hi all,
Thank you all so much for your designs. The range and quality was absolutely fantastic, better than we'd imagined.
After doing a little mini-focus group with some of our beta users, we have decided to go with Lori at Zenful Creations. The design hit the right mix of professional and friendly that appealed to the majority of our users.
We would like to close this contest 48 hours early, and use Lori's templates, but on reading the contest rules they suggest a 24 hour notice if we do that. So please, if you're going to submit something in the next 24-48 hours, please let us know right away with a response so we don't close down too early for you.
On a related topic, we have been running a logo contest, and haven't found a logo that we like (I know, I know...we probably shouldn't have had both contests going simultaneously, but it seemed like the right thing at the time). If anyone would like to submit a logo, one that would work with Lori's templates, please do.
Thanks,
-- Frank Leahy

Congratulations Lori!
Hi Frank,
Checking in again to see if there will be any revisions to the design and/or logo in the template. Let me know :)
When that is decided, how would you like the page coded? Standards compliant XHTML/CSS, or HTML? If you choose the XHTML (which I always recommend) do you do your own site work and know how to maintain an all CSS site? Let me know on this...

Hi Lori,
(How do you get them to move it to the revisions area? Do you know?)
Thanks for the design -- it's great!
Sorry about the delay...busy with family things for the last couple of days.
A couple of things:
1. Yes, xhtml and css is great. I'm pretty good with css (not great, but not bad). If you look at the current www.webphotospro.com you can see the two style sheets it uses. The more you can use the same names for similar items, the easier it will be for me.
2. We liked the headline font you used in the first version better than the Georgia in the second -- it stood out in a way that made the headlines easier to read, and the eye to follow. I realize this means a gif in that spot, and that if I want to change it in the future I'll need to the font here to make that happen -- that's ok.
3. The menu area at the top right -- home, downloads, etc. -- we thought was better in the first version than the second (the colors detracted from the rest of the layout), but the first version was a little too invisible. Could you try another treatment for that area, starting with the first version? Make the font darker? Make individual tabs? Make a separate bar? Not sure how to direct this, but I'm sure you've got an idea.
4. Two pages worth. I'm not quite sure what that means, maybe you can tell me. I'm thinking the front door, and then a common inside page. Before you start, Rachel and I would like to craft the copy and right hand column on the front door, and I'd like to rethink exactly what's on the inside pages (it's going to be less webloggy, which means removal of "categories", "entries", etc.). Can we get back to you on Monday about this?
5. Once we've done the two pages, I'd like to talk about having you do some other pages if you have the time. Do we do that through Design Output, or can we talk offline about them?

Lori,
Not sure how it would work in the current design, but we'd like to consider some type of drop down menus as shown here http://www.axomic.com/index.html
We're working on copy right now...
Thanks,
-- Frank
Hi Frank,
I am coming back up for air after being drowned in "stuff' for the last few days and ready to roll this out for you.
For the navigation I am going to try a few things for you :) I personally think that just the darker font is the way to go --- I think that the tabs or bar may messy it up a little - drop downs are no issue, and easily included
B U T
The logo; I see that you still have not decided on the logo in the contest you held...
Do you just want to go with my logo (pic/globe & text)? I can change the font treatment as you see fit, but to be honest that is one of the reasons this is not coded already...
I you are going to choose someone elses logo other than the one I did for you on the template, then I would really like to have it to fit into the temlate prior to coding out... Please let me know what you would like to do, as again, I can make any changes you need to the logo I have presented to you on my template design.
The two pages; yes that is an outer and inner page, but of course after I deliver those two, I am more than willing to assist you with any others after :) You can contact me via email to lori[AT]zenfulcreations.com to chit chat about what you may need after the fact :)
Hope things have slowed a bit for you there...

Hi Lori,
Sorry for the delay...I'm heading in to London this afternoon and will finish the copy on the way.
In the meantime, after much back and forth, we have come to some decisions. Here they are:
1) Logo. We want to use the one you came up with. We realize now that we shouldn't have had both contests going on simultaneously, but what's done is done.
The font isn't my favorite, but it seems to work pretty. If you had some other suggestions we'd look at them, but we also trust your design sense on this, so you let us know what you think.
2) The Home page
Will stay pretty much the same, with slightly different copy, but the featured photoblog will move to the right column and become a "featured photo", the Site Categories area will disappear, and the Top Blogs will become Latest News. Plus we want to add a User Quotes area to the right side.
3) Inside page
We want to keep the two column layout, but most of the right column won't be there anymore -- no entries (except maybe on blog), no monthly archives, no categories. Not sure what to put there...do you have any suggestions? Do we keep what's on the front door, or make the inside different? How does having no photo (of the little girl) on the inside page unbalance the design, or does it matter?
3) There are at least two or three other pages we'll need, one for key features, and one for "take a tour", and maybe one for user quotes when we have more of them.
That's it for now. Off to London. More this afternoon.
Thanks!
-- Frank

Here are the comments and copy that I promised.
Please let me know what falls within the contest revision scope, and what falls outside of it.
1) Header bar menu
------------------------------
We would like to remove some items in the header bar, and if possible have drop-downs (roll-over causes drop-down) for three of the menus.
The primary menu items would be:
Home | Downloads | Purchase | Examples | Support
The Downloads, Examples and Support menus would be drop-downs, with items as follows:
Downloads: Mac OS X, Window XP/2000, Server Edition
Examples: Photo Galleries, Customize, Screen Shots, Take A Tour, Key Features
Support: Support Forum, Documentation, How Do I?, FAQs
It might be nice too to have some type of rollover on the items -- maybe a slight color change with an arrow (ok, I'll let you be the designer :-)
2) Footer
------------------------------
We would like the footer to have the following items:
Home | About | Contact Info | News | Site Map
and if possible have it extend all the way across the page (instead of either just the right or just the left columns as it is now).
3) Home Page
------------------------------
Basic design, fonts and colors stay as you currently have it.
LEFT HAND COLUMN (PRIMARY COLUMN):
==================================
1) Headline: The Fastest Way To Get Your Photos Onto The Web
Copy : Whether you have 10 photos or 10,000 photos, Web Photos Pro is the fastest way to get your photos onto the web.
Available for Mac OS X and Windows XP/2000, Web Photos Pro helps you organize, manage, customize and upload your photos.
(Link) Learn More About Web Photos Pro >>
2) Download Button: Free Download (for Mac and PC)
(Comment: It would be nice if in addition to the nice large button you've got there now, there were some way to indicate both Mac and PC downloads. A "download arrow" for each platform might be a nice touch. Here are two arrows I like one (top right of page) (http://www.macrabbit.com/cssedit/) and two (right of screen shot) (http://www.newsfirerss.com/).)
3) Headline: How Does Web Photos Pro Work? (with screen shot of the camera that you've got there now)
Copy: Turn any folder of photo into a web-based photo album in under 3 minutes. Web Photos Pro creates thumbnails, resizes and compresses photos, builds web pages, and uploads it all with a click on the "Upload" button.
And iPhoto users will be pleased to find that Web Photos Pro works seamlessly with iPhoto.
(Link) Take A 1 Minute Tour >>
4) Headline: Key Features (with screen shot on the right that also links to the Tell Me More >> link)
(Four bullet points)
- Organize: albums, galleries and photo workspaces make organization a snap.
- Manage: create multiple thumbnail sizes, resize and compress your photos (without touching your originals), and upload to the web with one click.
- Customize: making albums and galleries match your web site is a breeze with our web skins.
- Upload: Upload it all via FTP with a single click of the "Upload" button.
(Link) Tell Me More >>
5) Who Should Be Using Web Photos Pro? (is there an image that should go here? Maybe a head shot of a "typical" user?)
Anyone -- individual or organization -- who needs to get their photos onto the web in the fastest, easiest way possible.
Photobloggers and webloggers, professional and amateur photographers, eBay power sellers, ad agencies, modeling agencies, museums and art galleries.

"Have been enjoying reading “A Year In Cornwall” for quite a few months now and thought I’d check this Web Photos App that you’ve kept on going on about - wish I’d done it sooner - would have saved me endless hours trying to sort out various photo wp plugins - was impressed at how easy it was to setup and install - congratulations on a very good web photos solution."

3) Featured User
(much the same as you did with the photoblogger area at the bottom of the main column, but make this a featured Web Photos Pro user rather than a photoblogger)

4) Inside Pages
------------------------------
All of the inside pages should look the same, picking up the primary elements from the front-door -- header bar, menus and footer, 2 column, etc. Where it will differ is in how the middle column is laid out.
A couple of example pages that will be in this format include:

Frank,
I have been coding away here on this, and have gotten it to a presentable format. I have validated the XHTML and CSS - and it is perfecto! The site displays perfectly in IE, Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape (NOT 4) --- but OPERA is giving me a headache, so I am trying to work a way around that (Opera does not want to float the logo correctly, or display the menu inline).
However, as I said, it is presentable and you can have a look :)
