Lori at Zenful Creations said that the greatest designers in the world are on Design Outpost. Pretty bold I thought from such a talented person who is in the process of designing my new website. So, I’m left with no alternative than to submit my project for bid to the “most talented” of designers to design my logo. I understand you appreciate quick feedback and as much information as possible to help you capture the spirit of my design. Therefore, I will share what I had in mind (as if I really have a clue) for a logo. I’ll do my best.

PRIZE: $200.00
DEADLINE: ASAP and hopefully by September 25th

Background:

I’m a seminar speaker and peak performance trainer for the direct sales industry and corporate clients. My direct sales (MLM) clients hire me to talk about the books I’ve written to validate, educate and motivate their distributor sales force. There’s nothing like third party documentation to validate the industry and their specific opportunity. My corporate clients hire me to motivate, inspire and to teach about discovering the leader with so they can be more productive and happier in their work and life. My books have sold more than 3 million in 20 languages. I believe people fear what they don’t understand. My books and seminars are critical to understanding the power within to achieve their DREAMS in their own business or career. Limiting beliefs are the seeds to self-sabotage. Education is the first step to transformation. My seminars mobilize and empower people, to do more, have more and be more than they have become. My talks ignite the fire that lies dormant within. To learn more about my products go to www.burkehedges.com.

Descriptive words, phrases, animals and images I like (not married to):

The following (not in any order) might help in developing an image for a logo:

Words: momentum, priceless, possible/possibilities, determination, mobilize, belief, attitude, focus, courage, guru, leader/leadership, teacher, ignite, courage, relentless, pursuit, empowerment, limitless, success, conviction, wisdom, energy, education, leadership, advantage, edge, impact, confidence, accountability, reinvent, dream.

Sayings: never give up, no regrets, swing for the fences, be your best, dream big, no whining, it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you react to it. It’s not the size of the man in the fight, but the size of the fight in the man. All the negativity in the world can’t sink your boat as long as you keep it on the outside.

Animals: the rhino, bull, eagle and the lion.

Images: bridges, world, smile, light bulb, mountains

Slogan: if you can think of a slogan I use I will send you an autograph copy of any one of my books and a couple of additional surprise gifts. I have posted a slogan contest (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5373) in “miscellaneous” for $25.

As you can surmise I’m desperately need the right image and posturing to wow my clients to help me help them. I have to get back to work. Lori, asked that you feel free to contact her with any questions since she is designing my website.

Thank you in advance for your contribution. I really appreciate your help and your talents. :)

Hi all,

Burke will be here on and off to give fast feedback but if you have any questions on direction please ask. I need to get the logo so that I can go on with the site design, and I know you all can do something super duper.

Thanks team!

Hi Burke. We are not allowed to communicate privately during the contest. Your comments are meant to benefit all designers in the pursuit to give you the perfect logo.
To be fair, I will post your comments here.

Hi Jason, thanks for being the first to tackle this project. I was watching Oprah a couple of days ago and i like her logo with the O. Maybe we can do something with the B. Just some thoughts. Burke

Funny you mentioned that. I was playing around with the "B" and "H", but I will try just the "B". I will be back with something for you.

Burke,

Can you let the designers who have submitted know in a little more detail what it is that you do and do not see that works for you in the designs they have given you...

That helps them and future entrants with the direction to move in...

Thanks Burke!

Hi all,

Burke is a new at the forum thing so I am going to help him out a little bit here ;)

He is working on some more detailed feedback to help you all with the direction now... look for that later today.

Until then, I asked him to go through some sites that I gave him to help pinpoint styles he likes for logos. He sent them to me, we discussed, and I have compiled his favorites here for you.

I hope this helps you all some :)

Thank you for your entries. I like the designs of the logos Lori was so gracious to post for me. I’m new (and obviously pretty incompetent) when it comes to DO. Sorry. Perhaps these logo sample will provide you with more direction than I’ve provided in the past.

As for my feedback on the logos design you’ve submitted:

Bill: I like the thought of a picture, but I didn’t care for the one you used. It looked to comic bookish for me. Maybe if it were a little softer (maybe in an outline type way) to leave more to the imagination might work!

Ruairi: I love the colors, but the image you used of the light bulb did not work for me because it reminded me too much of a power company. For me the light bulb communicates awareness, energy, and intelligence. Perhaps if you used a different type of light bulb design in a different way it might work.

Jason: Sometimes simple is better. I like your first B. I would like to see what it looks like in a box or with boundaries of some sort. The circle is intriguing but it doesn’t communicate enough to me.

Jason, can you try a different box design in the same hand written design you drew the "B". Or may be you could incorporate the "B" in a design in as in the Rooster in the Farmhouse Logo I provided. I appreciate your efforts Jason.

Paula, I like your first one better than the second. Could you try using a few different colors? I was thinking – Blue, white, Gray, Orange Red, Black. Not all at once, just the colors i would like to see in the background. Also, I wonder what the BH might look like just a tad bit thinner. Just a bit! Thanks for your entry.

It would be great if someone would take a crack at a logo that incorprates a combination of DreamWorks and Jerry Bruckheimer above. Thanks.

Hi Burke :)

Burke
09-21-2004, 07:53 AM
Paula23: Thank you for the additional designs. I thought I would like the thinner BH in the box, but I don’t like it as much as the thicker B in the circle. After getting a few opinions at the office (everybody’s got one) the general consensus is we like the thicker “B” in the circle. We would like for you to work with the circle design, but could you show us a BH and use more color options. I like the “B” but, I just would like to see what the BH looks like. Thanks

Design General: Thanks for your entry. Can you try to use a different design for the H in the BH so it could be a little clearer. Thanks.

Taldo: Thanks for your design. I like your approach but I thought it was a little too festive. Perhaps you can tone it down a bit and make it a little more elegant. Thanks.

Eagle: “I’m sorry" "that does not appeal, can you try again?"

Paula23, I like the color combination of the bottom right and the purple/yellow. I like the design of the top left. Can you redo the logo in the B and the BH (like two previous top left). I like the idea of a moon, (maybe a star shining, clouds, depth like the DO web logo) because it makes you think of dreams. By the way does the H in the top right need to have some curves like the B or would it take away from the design?

Fabian: I like your logo, perhaps a variation with a B. What are your thoughts?

Design General: I’m sorry, but the designs are not working for me. Please feel free to try again. Thanks.

Ok. I guess, i`ve nothing to add more as shown below :)
As for the identity, it could be good looking , when you could cut the inner part of opening doors on business cards, foldres, etc. to visualize the logo concept...
With regards,

Burke

p_karetko: I love your approach to your design. It’s fresh, different and imaginative
Thank you. How would it look on a business card, post card, letterhead or teeshirt? Can you please provide an example? You mentioned colors, what more did you have in mind? Thank you.

Raja: Thank you for both designs. I see you were thinking out of the box with your first logo. I agree it doesn’t work. I like your 2nd attempt but it’s not what I was looking for. Can you try again please! Thank you Raja

Jason: thanks for your new logo. It’s elegant, simple and website workable. However, the “b” looks too much like a “6”. Can you work with it a bit? Thanks. By the way, I like the blue white and black look. Nice.

I very much appreciate all the work that you have put in to your designs. You are all very talented. I would like to let everyone know that currently I most like (in no order) jason (last submission), p_karetko and Mark. This does not mean that I am not open to more designs, so please feel free to submit any new ideas.

p_karetko: Can you try a couple of things for me please.
1. Make the B look more like a B by adding a couple of circles (windows) in the B to reduce some of the heavy Black. Let me see what it will look without the edges as well!
2. Open the door a little more and put a door knob on it(I don’t know if this will work, but it’s worth a try), and make the door blue. Thank you in advance for the new variations.

Raja: I went to view your portfolio, and came across your 'lion" there. I am wondering if you could try something for me. I very much like the way the MGM Hotel logo is done. (http://www.holidaycity.com/mgm-grand-darwin/logo.gif) Do you think you could try to do something like that? Thanks.

Mark: I like the logo you’ve submitted. Can you switch the head from the left to the right? Thank you. Nice job

Hello, I`m back, soo sorry for delay ... Had a crazy week :)

And here are a few of suggested options for the logo with some comments, as well as the old one, but in blue. If You feel like working on one of them, i`ll post the whole identity concept ...
yummie, that will be something ....

http://pkaretko.webpark.pl/burke_01.gif

the old one, but in blue. it looses lots of its wight by changing the main color. i still think it is the strongest one of all options here ... and universal one ...

http://pkaretko.webpark.pl/burke_02.gif
As a designer, i`d say : could be. Those two holes in B, make the "opening door/window effect" weaker. The logo becomes more complicated, which i think, is not good, in general.

http://pkaretko.webpark.pl/burke_03.gif
... and with the handle. I`ll say it straight: it is beginning to look a bit too "straight" in its meaning. Let the people say one day : aah, this is the door on this logo . Clever.

http://pkaretko.webpark.pl/burke_04.gif
...and with door open wider. What worries me most about this one is that the logo looses its nice looking proportions ...

NEW DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 3Oth

I can’t believe I’m smack in the path (Tampa Bay) of our 4th hurricane in 5 weeks. Anyways, Jeanne has sparked my thinking and I want to share my idea with you. But first, I want to thank everyone for your great logos.

I’m confident you will agree that my logo should embrace the spirit of my message and identity. The process which you have all put me through reminds me of the metamorphous of the caterpillar to a butterfly. Here is the Ah Ha – A Butterfly! My message is about transformation. I believe that, education is the first step to transformation, that is, personally and professionally. So, I thought what could be more fitting than a Butterfly for a logo. A butterfly embodies freedom and transformation.

Now the question is what type of butterfly and how to use it in a design. The slogan could be – “Transform your life.” Or, “Burke Hedges Seminars - A Transformational Experience!”, in other words, change and adversity is necessary for progress.

Attached is a butterfly I scanned from my local newspaper this morning which I thought was pretty neat but certainly not married to. I’ll leave the imagination to you. I’m open to colors, but it’s important that the logo or design embodies freedom and transformation. However, I’m a little concerned that a butterfly may remind people of the Silence of the Lambs, if you know what I mean.

Thank you everyone for your hard work and your patience. But, I truly believe this is the way to go. Mark, your Bull is awesome, but I’m afraid it may be too masculine for our industry which predominantly 75% women.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, for your patience and hard work. I look forward to seeing your new designs. Burke

First, to everyone who has taken a shot at designing my logo I want to send you a gift. Please provide me with your mailing address and I will send your gift out in the mail right away. It’s my way of saying thank you for your efforts.

Here is the bomb, I thought the butterfly would be the “ah ha” but, it’s not. Of the recent logos submitted, the one I like the most is Taldo’s butterfly. The others are very nice, but they are just not working for me because they’re mostly too feminine. I’m beside myself. I really wish you weren’t working on my logo, because I wouldn’t be so darn picky and we would have been done ages ago. It is what it is!

Anyway, I like the idea of an animal because it represents a feeling. But, is the bull to threatening or aggressive and the butterfly too feminine? I guess it would depend on who you ask, right? The rhino and the eagle are nice, but sooooo many people use them in the industry. Maybe a lion will work?

Another thought is a sunrise. I was walking earlier this morning and witnessed the most awesome sunrise in the horizon. The thin clouds in the background and the bright reddish orange sun was simply spectacular.

I know I haven’t been much help, but I thought I would at least bring you up to speed as to what I was thinking (obviously not much). Get me your addresses and I’ll have my assistant send out your gifts. Thanks . Burke

So, i strongly believe, it is a good logo ! I do.
I think it will work for you. We could work on the logotype in terms of color in order to make it lighter. What is also imporatant, i could develop the whole identity ( paper, bc ) basing on cutting the hole in the doors on each piece of identity, making it unique ...
so If You want to " fight" a bit longer with it , I am ready too :)
Cheers :)

p_karetko: I’ve always been intrigued by your logo. When I showed it to my colleagues most of them loved it, but some thought the black was too heavy and could be difficult to work with in other promotional materials such as, flyers, video, cd packaging covers etc. Personally, I think the black is what gives it the power, but I’m sensitive to the opinions of the professionals in my office. Where do we go from here? I suggest you take your best shot at showing me how to use the logo (or a variations of it) and run with it.

In other words I would like to see more of an “authoritative” lion and less of a cub.

I know I haven’t been the easiest of clients to accommodate, but I assure you the next project I post will go much more smoothly now that I have a little experience. My offer to send all those who entered into the contest a copy of my book “You, Inc. – Discover the CEO Within” still stands. Just email me your mailing address to burke@burkehedges.com and make sure you type – “D.O., You, Inc book” in the subject line so I can properly identify you. Thanks again to all and I look forward to posting more projects in the future.

Mark, I would like for you do a few revisions to the logo. I'll touch base with you soon. Great job!

Mark congratulations on wining the contest, nice work. I would like for you make a few changes for me. First, I would like for you to remove the lines on the top of the back and I would like for you to do something with the tail. I think maybe a bit longer might work. Play with it and see what you come up with. Second, I would like to see the logo in a red even though I love its current color. Next I would like for you to play around with size of the logo, perhaps, small, medium and large (the current size). Lastly I would like for you to play around with location of the logo, name (Burke Hedges Seminar) and slogan – Take Charge of Your Business!

How do we handle laying out the logo on a business card, letterhead and envelope? How much more is it? Is it included? (Doubt it) If not just let me know what you would charge me to lay it all out or should I post it on DO?

Thanks Mark and I’m looking forward to seeing your revisions.

Hi Burke, here's the changes you requested.

FYI, I charge $145 total for business card, letterhead and envelope. If you would like me to design your stationery, just send the money via paypal to support@logodesign.ca and I will get started as soon as you finalize the logo.

If you prefer to hold a contest at D.O. and set your own price, that's ok too. It's totally up to you.

:D

Thanks
mark

Mark, I was reviewing the logo last night and by pure accident I did something to the logo that I absolutely love. What I did was, I cropped the medium size rust color logo (Picture attached) and pasted it on to a word document. Then I placed my curser on the image on the word document and hit – ctrl- A (select all) and what I saw was the lion in blue in a black box with the letters reversed out in white. This is the logo I want and love. All you have to do is make sure it’s symmetrical. Can you do this for me? It’s awesome!

If you wish to explore further, then feel free to use your design talents to modify any additional images you think will make even better. Otherwise, complete the final logo as described above and we will call it a rap.

IMPORTANT: I’m new at this, so I’m not sure what’s included when completing the final version of the logo. However, if appropriate (and very much appreciated) would you please separate all the elements of the logo -- Burke Hedges Seminars and - take charge of your business (in black), and the lion (Blue and Black Version). Please put the lion in a black box by itself and without a box. Also can you please add – Take charge of your life! Thank you Mark, you’re the best!

These are my final revisions. I want you to know that I’m absolutely ecstatic with the way its finally going to turn out.

Let me know if you have any questions and I’m looking forward to the final logo.
:D

Let me know if this is what you had in mind, and I will send you the artwork in various formats.

Thank you Mark! Yes, this is what had I had in mind. But, I want you to give me an image of the lion (solo) with black on the inside of the body and the face like in the black box. Also, please make sure when you send the artwork to me that you send me the lion in the rust color as well and the letters (burke hedges seminars and take charge of your life) separately.

If you would do this for me then we can call it a rap. Good work.

Thank you Mark, but I'm unable to open the files. Any suggestions on how to open them! What program are the files in? I can probably find someone who could open them for me. Let me know how to proceed or please save them in a different program and resend them. I have page maker, quark express and Microsoft publishing. Thanks.

Also, please email me your address and I will send you a copy of my book. Take care and I'm looking forward to your response. Burke

Sorry about that. Please keep the logos you have on file for sending to service bureaus such as printers, sign makers, etc. They should be able to open them and are suited for high end printing jobs, particularly the .ai files which are vectorized and able to be enlarged to any size without losing clarity.

You can download these files which you should be able to bring into the programs that you mentioned.
