Please help me freshen up our corporate image with a new logo. Milton Steel, Inc. is a structural steel fabricator that has been in business since 1927. We fabricate I-beams and columns for commercial building construction and bridges. Think shopping malls, warehouses, 3 story office buildings. Looking for ideas that are strong and professional. We have been using a graphic similar to the one attached - it is a fattened-up I-beam. I like this and think the concept can be put to excellent use, but it is not a necessity. I do like blues and grays.

I also like the tag line: "Solutions since 1927". Don't know if this should be part of the logo or put it in the biz card/letterhead/envelope project (which is next). What do you think?

Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for the fast start, here is some feedback:

First 3 out of 4 are incorporating the M in the graphic. I do not need this and I would like you to change your thinking.

Jason: I don't like your graphic. The shape is not good for steel.
Bill: Again , proportions are not right for the I-beam you are using.
Moz: The liquid metal is interesing but too difficult to read, the top one gives me a clip art feel.
Eziey:Yours looks professional but trying too hard to use the M.

Any questions?

In no particular order:

Bill: reminds me of collapsed building like WTC. This is decidedly not good :( We supplied the ramp down into ground zero, btw.

Raja: text too boxy, try a modern sans serif and there is no e on the end of steel. I don't like the beam skewed, try putting it back on plane.

Eziey: change font so not so blocky-see note to Raja. I don't care for your middle set in the newest submission. The "Inc." is not necessary or could be less prominent.

keep 'em coming :)

Hello,
Here is a concept. I know it really doesn't look like anything "steel-ish" but I thought I would give it a shot.

MOZ is back. I was born & raised in PA, and as a kid I would watch the steel plant across the river pour the molten steel. That's where I got the idea for this logo submission. It's kinda of deco too.

Nice to see lots of activity! The more I see the more I realize I don't want to start over from scratch. I do not want to lose the corporate identity we already have. I want to keep the I-beam cross section like the example I posted.

Now, this does not mean it has to be identical but I do want a similar cross section shape. Maybe the top and bottom sections not quite so thick. I like eziey's, Eagle's and Christian's idea of pulling the cross section into a perspective view.

I think we can do more with font selection and placement. Most fonts have been too strong (I know I asked for it  ) Looking for more of a corporate look.

Hi all,

Lots of nice improvement. I am going to just fire off comments in the order of your appearance since my last feedback. Here goes:

Mark: I like this. Try giving everything a slight slant to the right // and not as much cross hatch in the graphic. Maybe diff fonts?
Samoyloff: Nice. I think the radiant lines make the graphic too busy. Also would like darker blue with maybe a diff shade for Steel to make it stand out. I like your font.
Tonya: Graphic proportions are not good. The horizontal shapes need to be thicker than the vertical. Whole concept maybe too basic.
Christian: You are doing great. I will need to think look closely at all of yours to give you some focus to narrow down. I don't like the first font, too "computer-geeky" How's that for a description :D The gray graphic is too light, try that blue with the circle gray. Also, the horizontal elements should be thicker (slightly) than the vertical.

Jason: I like this but the graphic needs to be darker, too hard to see. The shape looks good!
Raja: This is not doing anything for me
Fabian: First one to listen to my suggestion to try my graphic  I don't like the proportions of graphic to text, though.
Aaron: Too basic.
Samoyloff: Too basic.
Christian: I don't like this as much as the previous ones. I would like to see what you can do with the top & bottom flanges of the beam parallel to each other.
Samoyloff:I like the simple but clean font and the different emphasis. The graphic is interesting but not what I am looking for. Also, too monochromatic. Try a bit darker.

General comment: Don't be afraid to add a splash of color. While I don't want to get carried away, 2 colors would be ok. Keep up the good work :cool2:

Ok, back to work.
General comment: I am getting a feeling of icon and text in many designs. I would like to see them tied together better for the logo.
Adrian: #1 Nice, see above comment. #2 I don't care for. #3 Ok but see above comment again. Need a termination of perspective.
Fabian: See comment above. I don't like all one word.
Jason: I really like this but define the shape better. This is too abstract for me.
Aaron: Not what I am looking for. too blocky. Want more of a corporate look.
Samoyloff: I like the simple clean font selection! Like your previous icon better. Maybe caps?
Mark: Better but something about the proportions/font size. The "solutions..." seems like an afterthought, too. Drop it and work on fonts.
Christian: As I said before I think you have a great design. I want the top and bottom flanges of the I-beam to be thicker than the vertical web part. Try an Arial type font also. I like the beam and circle very much.
Tonya: This is good but see comment above about a disconnect with graphic and text. The vertical part of the I beam needs to be thinner than the horizontal part. Try red instead of orange. The orange = rust. Not good in this business
:) This the clean font that I like but condense the spacing a bit.

See below for a basic one I did on my own that I like :D

Jason: I like your latest design. This is a very good representation of a steel beam. See what else you can throw at me, keeping the graphic the same.

Design General: The split color beam is not doing it for me.

Mark: Proportions-too tall. Seems plain.

I'd love do revise this design for you but I'm not really sure what you mean. Did you mean new fonts and/or font placement? Or did you mean move the graphic to a different location within the design?
BTW, I'm glad you liked it :) .

Jason: I was referring to the text. I like the font but would like to see some changes-try making "Steel" a little larger. See if something jumps out.

Just J
11-19-2004, 02:43 PM
I moved "Steel" around a bit after making it larger and found that it "fits", simply, in-line with Milton.

Hi Jason:

Lets see the I beam with the top and bottom defined. I like it like it is but humor me :)

Try a different shade of blue. This looks almost monocrome. I don't know if we are getting much bang for the buck with the tiny amount of red. What do you think?

Thanks, Chris

Just J
11-23-2004, 06:53 PM
Hi Chris.
Definition is not really my strong point, in fact, me designing that kind of caught me off gaurd  .
If you are willing to to work with me a little, I would be more than willing to try and get it more defined as you want it.
By defined how do you mean? If I close off the top and bottom to make it solid, I'm afraid two things will happen.
1. It will completely loose it's charm of being semi-abstract.
2. It will just look like a solid I-Beam (read #1)
The color...
When you said monochome you are kind of on the right track. To keep your colors down to two (to keep printing costs down), I used a shade of the original blue to give you a "third" color. If you don't mind going three colors, I can easily come up with a third color to compliment the design.
Or...
To answer your question on the red. I can just use the blue and red throughout the design to really give it some punch.
But, by having the red only in the dot of the "i", it (in my opinion) is giving the eye something more to look at, rather than using only two solid, dark colors.
Let me know your thoughts. You are the boss and I will do as you ask to make you LOVE this design.
As soon as I hear back, I will get right to work :) .
Thanks again Chris.
Jason

Jason:

Ok, let's leave the graphic alone for now. Let's see what you can do with color. What I was alluding to in my other post was that the blue is very dark. (1) Try a slightly brighter shade. (2) One logo file will be used for clothing embroidery so the number of colors isn't an issue. Let me see what you can do for this.

Chris
