Alrighty there. I was so pleased with the last contest that I held that I am holding another. And I can think of at least one more project in the near future that I might need some more assistance on... Anyway you all rock...
Here are the specifics:
Client:
This is a postmodern service near Mobile Alabama called Canvas. The church that sponsors it is a non-denomination Christian church. For those of you that do not know what postmodern usually signifies think younger college aged and newly graduated from college folks attending a contemporary Christian worship service that uses some older elements. Kind of a merging new technologies and thoughts with older practices. The services typically are candlelit with the lights down.
Name:
The name of the service is Canvas. It signifies that we each are blank canvases onto which God paints His masterpiece through our lives.
Uses:
The logo will be used in print and web. The Client wants to start advertising the service times and will probably be taking out ads in the local magazines (gloss full color). They also have a website that I am putting together for them at www.canvasministries.org The logo will also be used for fun things like a T-Shirt and business cards etc etc.
Color:
To begin with lets try some muted colors
Design Thoughts:
Customer thinks they would want something Gothic or something that merges modern and traditional together. But also feel free to throw out what you think of when brainstorming. The more submissions the better.
Deadline:
Dec 31 but we will extend if the holidays keeps some from getting ideas in.
Prize:
175$ US Dollars
Product:
Must be delivered in the usual Vector, psd, jpg and tif. Black and white and color for each
Additional Info:
Get creative on this one (I know I know really hard for this group ;-) they want something that is really going to grab peoples attention but also conveys what it is that they are about.

I quite like the way the font turned out for this: it's a very traditional serif font but aggresively kerned for some modernity. Let me know what you think!

I like the Just_G idea. Could you experiment with the Font some. Maybe go a little gothic with it.
mbleigh not really what I was looking for but I will show it to my client. Could you seperate the star/cross from the word Canvas. And try 1 or 2 different font choices if you would...
Thanks!
Anyone else?

This just in....
The client says that the logo does not necessarily have to have the cross in it.

Another idea, I did this because of the mention of full color, if I need to restrict I can rethink.

Michael,
Your design is good but it is too clean and bright for what we are looking for. Could you roughen it up a bit. Change the font for something a bit less clean and try using some muted colors.
Just_G,
I personally like the top selection the most from what you have submitted. Could you throw out some color choices as well.
:geek:
Just wanted to state it again that designs submitted for this contest do not have to have a cross in them. Think outside of the box. We want something edgy that will relate to 20somethings.
For a better idea of others that are currently working with this age group take a look at the following...

Thanks!

Here's a 'rougher' version with more muted colors.
I understand that you don't need the cross, it's really just a crutch for me...it's hard as a designer to have an icon with a blank canvas that doesn't look a little to empty :)
Hope you like the revisions.

Sorry to say guys but we need some more entries.... What more information can I provide to get some more ideas?
just_g,
The client said that he likes your first cross better and is still not sure about the fonts. And I think he would still benefit from a few color choices.

How bout something that uses a little comic of Jesus? Kind of an anime theme?
Or an actual painting canvas that has something on it....
I really like the www.onetruth.com logo Anyone have any ideas for something along that theme but not so close that we would be infringing on their design?
Or another ministry website similar to Canvas is www.frontline.to
or http://www.mosaic.org/
Or something using the symbol of the trinity.

Another site with the look and feel we are looking for. The colors especially stand out.
Carl,
Not really what we are looking for. But thanks for the submission. And it was definitely outside of the box which is what I was asking for...

Hi Marcus,
In this submission, I've tried to use the examples you've provided as a stylistic starting point. I hope the symbolism is fairly obvious (a swash of paint on a stylized canvas circle.) If you like the concept but would like to see any teaks or revision, please feel free to ask.
Thank you,

Dave how bout tweaking the logo a bit. The font is good for now. Go to www.mosaic.org and take a look at the logo in the top portion of their site. Think about how you could make something like that look like it was painted on a canvas. You may be on to something.... Make it look like brush strokes instead of broken up pieces (representing the mosaic tile theme that all Mosaic churches use). Can you add some depth to the canvas?

Hi Marcus,
Below, please find my interpretation of the revisions you requested. Please let me know if you think this version works better for you, or if you'd like to see any other changes.
Thank you,

Carl,
Your second idea is good. I like it. Could you make some minor tweaks. Shorten the arms of the cross but keep the canvases the same size so that the arms stop but the canvas still has space. Also the color selection and font are not working for me. But I see those items as minor. You may try throwing out something new with your revision though. I like the logo idea
Dave,
Can you make the canvas in your image a triangle and make the paint splotches such that they make an abstract cross? You are close to something though.
Moz,
Not really what we were thinking of but thanks for the submission. Got any other ideas you wanna throw into the mix?
Just_G,
I was still hoping to see some revisions... Are you still reading?
Thanks all!

Bill,
I like it. The colors are all starting to look the same. Disregard what others have done and what I have suggested for colors. I really really llike the font on your idea. Could you resubmit with a different color scheme and without the paintbrush. Perhaps putting the image of christ on a white background wiht shadow to make it look as if it is on a canvas....
All,
The color comment to Bill really goes to all. Don't get trapped into what it is that you think I want. Do what looks good. You all are the designers not me ;-) If I knew what I was talking about then I wouldn't be asking for your help...

Paula,
I think your oval idea has taken the lead with my client. One concern we have though is contrast when doing newsprint... What thoughts do you have? There is a chance that we would be doing some T-shirts as well and I am not sure how your logo would show up in screen printing. Your mosaic cross was a hit as well. Not sure what the client would want changed about it. It seems right on.
MyChicken,
I personally like your logo as well. Not sure what the client thinks.
To all the others.
Keep em coming. This is not a done deal just yet. I would encourage you all to keep up the good ideas/work.

Here is the logo showing how it would look in both a gradient and solid grayscale. Also shown in solid colors.
I'll be happy to provide you with any additional revisions you would like to see.
Thanks,Paula

Congrats Paula the client doesn't want to wait to see if any other entries come in. They like yours and want to see any others.
I would like to see just a few changes but nothing major, and I am assuming that you can provide the various file formats in both the gradient and the solid designs?
To everyone else.... Thanks again you all rock!

Thanks Again,Paula:)

Awesome Paula,
The only revisions would be to provide not only the taupe/brownish version and grayscale. But also to provide a couple of other colors as well. They really like and want the current version but just wanted to see how it would look in other colors. I know they mentioned Rust, olive green. But honestly I want your suggestions as you are the creator of the logo what colors do you think would render it. The reason why they are asking for at least two more color options is because they sometimes use a brownish /tan type of paper for their bulletins and the logo would get lost in the current color and grayscale would not look right either....

I thought I'd start out by posting the gradients of those colors, and if you like them I will show you the solid versions of them.
Thanks,Paula

Paula I like the green one. The red one is not quite there. Can you make it a bit of a darker red color? Or go more in the rust direction....
