Hello,

We are looking for a logo for our business: ComponentExpress.Net, a software company. The price is $150, and the deadline is 3/7/2005.

The logo will be used on the Web and on business cards. It would be best if it looks good in both color and black and white. At the moment I do not have any color preferences. I'd like to leave it open, and we'll provide quick feedback.

We'd like a logo that’s leading edge, clean, comtemporary and professional, and not cartoony or whimsical. It should communicate quality and value and convey confidence. Our unique selling point is ease of use. Our tagline is "Controls proven to speed development". The word proven in italics. This does not need to be in the logo. We are not attached with this tagline, so if you want to come up with something else, feel free.

We have the domain (e.g. http://www.componentexpress.net) although it is not yet active.

ComponentExpress.Net is the definitive expert source for ASP.NET Web user interface controls. We are a trusted partner and advisor to the development community. Our products are easy-to-use, feature-rich and offer an exponential increase in productivity.

Our products (Custom Controls) are like building blocks for web sites. Custom controls can be thought of as "widgets" which provide specific functionality to the ASP.NET developer. For example, our products make it easy to add menus to a a site (pulldown, navigation, context). We will have a menu strip, tree control, color picker, date-time picker and a number of other components that developers can drag and drop into their project. We support integration into Microsoft Visual Studio for C# and VB.NET programmers.

Those developing ASP.NET web sites buy our software to save them time and effort in implementing the functionality they need. By purchasing our components, they focus on the functionality of their site, and not about re-inventing the wheel (or the tree control or the menu or date piccker).

I'll be checking daily, so feel free to ask questions, or ask for clarification. Let me know if there’s more information that you need.

Attached are logos for some competitors. These just provide an idea of others out there. We are looking for a logo that is unique and stands out.

If you are chosen, the final product must include the following:
- Full Color
- Black & White
- Grayscale
- 72 DPI version for the Web and 300 DPI version for print material.
-EPS, GIF and JPEG versions of the logo with all type converted to paths.

I have been blown away by the creativity I've seen on DesignOutpost. I look forward to seeing everybody's ideas on this logo, and I am very excited to see some awesome designs.

As a note, we'll be needing web site, package (image of product box), splash screens, along with some banner ads designed in the future. For the right designer, this could lead to other projects.

Thank YOu, and Good Luck!

All the best,

Paul Perry

Thank you QuirkDesign , Paula and Samoyloff for getting this off to a great start!

QuirkDesign: Nice idea. We like the high-tech look, and the picture suggests high-tech. Don't care much for the yellow. Maybe a red? Would probably prefer a navy blue or electric blue? Also, would like to see a version with .Net in the name.

Paula: Good to see you here! Like the idea in CE-2 of the two tone for the words of the company name. Also, like the blue of CE-1. Would prefer to have the .Net with a capital N. Prefer the logo of CE-1 over the one for CE-2 (although clever idea). I don't think the tagline works too well here. Maybe it's too long. Also, it's plural - "Controls...". I'd love to see a couple other logo ideas. Is there anyway to work this idea in of building blocks (components) for the visual part of the logo?

Samoyloff: Good to see you here! We like the "look and feel" of the font. The logo doesn't do much for us, sort of too generic. Definately like the use of the two-tone (is that the right term?) for the two words of the company name. Would like to see with a different logo. Possibly also a sample with ".Net" at the end.

Things are looking good. Thank you for your creativity, and please keep the ideas coming!

Hi Paul

I drafted this quickly, it can use some more thought and care. The idea here was to merge the letters 'c' and 'e' to re-instate the name in the icon...upon futher inspection, you might notice the wrench(tool) :D

Bye for now!

Wow, this is great, We're glad to see some great ideas here.

samoyloff: cx_02 is looking pretty good. In the graphic, the way the two pieces fit together is pretty cool - it hints at the way components fit together to form a whole. Could you try some different color combinations?

QuirkDesign: This red color seems too bright. I know I suggested the red. Could you try a couple of different reds, and maybe some other colors too?

Paula23: Thanks for all the ideas with the blocks. Probably the one in CE-5 strikes us the most. We like the shadow effect. Could you provide a couple of other take-offs using this idea?

Eziey: Great to see you here. We like this idea. The graphic element is an interesting twist. We'd love to see some additional ideas around this, maybe some different colors.

Mark: Thanks for posting. We like the text aspect, but the graphic element doesn't strike us too much. We'd like to see a design with red and dark blue, maybe with the graphic on the left side, maybe with a different graphic.

Raja: This is a good idea. We'd love to see any other ideas you have around this theme.

Fabian: Thanks for getting involved! In (fab1) we like the use of the two colors for the words. The graphic in (fab1) strikes us as a mis-formed pac-man (no offense). We'd love to see some additional ideas using similar words, with a different graphic element. We really like the graphic in (fab2). Could you try something with the graphic in (fab2) and the text from (fab1) ? That would be great.

This is really great to see so many different ideas. Thanks for thinking through these and spending your valuable time on them. Please keep them coming!

All The Best,
Paul

Hi Paul, thank you for the invite! :D

Here is a fairly simple strong mark. I chose the "cx" combo because it allowed for the use of an arrow in the negative space to signal direction and speed. (Big ups to any lions out there, ;) )

Hi Paul Perry,

Here's a concept using the "C" and "E" letterforms. I gave them a "3D" look with some pretty extreme perspective to play up the components aspect.

Let me know if you think this concept works for you. I'll be glad to make any changes you'd like to see.

Thank you,

-Dave :D

Hello All, Wow, this is just awesome to see the level of creativity exposed here at DesignOutpost!!! We are so happy with all the great ideas. Thanks for all the updates and new ideas.

Here are individual comments.

Fabian: Thanks for the updates. Out of (fab3) we like (a) and (c) the best. Could we see one with red and blue along with gray for the .net. Also, would it work to put it on two lines, with the graphic to the left?

QuirkDesign: We like the colors for Logo 1 - Version 3 the best so far. We'd be interested in seeing one possily on two lines, without the .net extension. Also the same but without the extension.

RadicalSEED: Good to see you here! Thanks for your idea. We actually hadn't thought of this, and we do really like the idea of CX. We had considered using CE and sort of rejected it. Any other ideas around this concept of using the CX? The X definately gives it a cutted edge flavor.

dbenton25: Thanks for your submission -- Wow, this is really interesting. I assume it can be made a little smaller?? The size is sort of big for a logo. Any ideas around using CX instead of CE? We do like the way this flows, although would probably prefer a red color instead of the orange.

eziey: Thanks for reworking these ideas. We probably like eziey 3 the best from of yours.

samoyloff: Like it alot. on the cx_03 image, we probably like the third one with the blue the best. Maybe cut off the .net so it is not that long.

NOTE: To several of you: I know, we requested the version with the .Net in the logo. Looks like maybe you folks were right to begin with and maybe it should not be in the logo. sorry about the extra work.

You are all very creative and it is fantastic to see all this creativity put into the design of our logo.

Thank you for your ideas, and keep them coming! We still love to see any new ideas you have.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Here's a revised "CX" version of my design. I used red instead of orange this time.

Let me know if this version works better for you and please don't hesitate to ask if you'd like to see any other changes.

Thank you,

Dave :D

Wow, this is awesome. Things are getting really exciting with all the good ideas that are flowing. Here are individual comments:

dbenton25: We like the most recent version, with the CX in red and blue. However, the black and white version is difficult at a quick glance to read. Could you add some shading to the white area, make the b&w version more recognizable?

raja: Prefer red and grey over blue and orange. Would like to see this in blue and grey color scheme, with .net added to the end of what's currently the grey and red, and then the 2nd line right justified with the end of .net

samoyloff: on cx_04 like the top one the best. Don't care as much for cx_05.

eziey: Thanks for some more ideas. As we have looked at this moe, we feel the look is too similar to the windows logo. Although, the color combination is very interesting. Also, don't care too much for the capitalized Net (black version) when the rest of the characters are lowercase.

Paula23: Like CE-8 the best here.

QuirkDesign: We like Version 7 the best of yours. The font is interesting, conveys High Tech. Have had some people that feel the graphic portion doesn't convey the idea of components. Have any other ideas on this, in-line with the concept of components or blocks or even a puzzle (pieces of the whole).

Mark: Thanks so much for your idea. We smiled with this. It is a little too cutesy for what we want to use. Would love to see any other concepts.

Fabian: We were thinking if splitting the words into two would help offset the graphic on the left. In (fab4) the color is more of an orange...we prefer more of a red.

We really appreciate all the thought and energy and work you all have put into this. There are some great ideas here. Still more time! Please keep your great ideas flowing!

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the feedback. I can't add "shading" to the black and white version since it has to be absolute solid black on white. I can create a grayscale version, but you'll need a solid black on white version for applications such as bank checks, Fax cover letters, etc.

I had the same concern you did. The "C" seemed to be getting lost. It's hard for me to judge the readability though, since I'm staring at it for so long. I hope this version is more readable for you. Let me know if you think it needs more work.

Thank you,

Dave :D

Looking Good.

QuirkDesign: Thanks for the new concept. We'll think more about this.

Eziey: We like this one better.

dbenton25: We like this. As far as the b&w version, is there any way to do a 20% fill on the CX (in addition to the bw& you have here)? We won't necesarily be using this on checks to begin with, and faxes lose resolution as well. This b&w is better, although would be interested in seeing it with grayscale.

One thing we noticed, on the color version that we didn't notice before is the shadowing on the type. The shadow under the big CX is below, but the shadow behind componentexpress is above and to the left of the type. We were thinking that it would look better to either remove the shadow from the type or make the shadow consistent with the CX and move it down and offset to the right instead. Maybe a version of both?

Fabian: Thanks for the new designs, we'll think about them more.

RadicalSEED: Thanks for the new colors. Again, we'll consider it more and provide any additional feedback.

As always, keep on sending the great ideas. We have not hit on 'the one', but I can tell that it's almost here.

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Attached is a version with the changes you requested.

1. Removed shadow from behind text (putting it underneath, like the "CX" symbol doesn't look good.)
2. Created a grayscale version of the logo with blended fills. I can also create a grayscale vesion with solid fills upon request.

I hope you like it. Let me know if you have any other revisions you'd like to see.

Thank you,

Dave :D

Hello All.

Thanks DesignGeneral and Raja for your new entries.

A BIG Thank You to everyone for your great creativity and fresh ideas. We were really blown away by the designs presented here and want to thank you all so much for working with us and presenting such great ideas.

It was a tough choice and very close, but in the end we have come to a conclusion.

We have (finally) chosen the logo…….and the design goes to the latest from dbenton25.

Congratulations! We are very excited with this logo.

We would like:
- two .psd (photoshop) color images of the logo in a size suitable for a business card (300ppi), one with words to the right and the other with words below.
- two .gif files of the color logo suitable for use in a web site with words to the right and below.

- two version of the grayscale version as a psd (sizable) one with words on right other with words below).
- the red and white as a psd (sizable, so we can make different sizes, as needed.) One with words on right other with words below
- the black and white version as a .psd, sizable, one with words on right and other on bottom.
